Evangelist Missionary Mother Ellen Fumbank and Times contributor, passes
Evangelist Missionary Mother Ellen Fumbanks, who also served as the Milwaukee Times birthday list contributor, passed away on December 9, 2019. She had suffered a stroke earlier this year; she was 77.

Mother Fumbanks was born on February 19, 1943 in Clarksdale, Mississippi to the union of Rosie Lee Banks and Charles Barner, Sr. Her mother instilled in her the word of God at an early age with the spirit of prayer by example. She was the second eldest of 15 children, and moved to Chicago with her family at a young age. She received her formal education and graduated from Wendell Phillips High School on Chicago’s South Side. Her schoolmate, David Cooke, who was the baby brother of late great singer Sam Cooke, had a crush on her as did many other young men because she was such a mature, sweet, and beautiful young woman. She went to live with her beloved aunt Carrie Mae Beverly, who was a teacher, and Uncle Leon Beverly, who was a labor organizer with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Their influence ignited her passion for excellence, and caused her to fall in love with teaching and political action.
As time progressed, Ellen returned to school and earned two associate degrees from MATC, and later obtained two bachelor’s degrees from UW-Milwaukee, graduating with honors. She then finally decided to return to school again to complete a master’s degree in education from Marquette University in 2004, also with honors. She received numerous academic achievement and community activism awards for her involvement in pushing Milwaukee’s progressive educational and social agendas.
Affectionately called ‘Honey’ by her family because of her sweet personality, she later met Sidney Fumbanks, Sr., and in 1960, decided to join hands in holy matrimony. They relocated to Milwaukee, WI in 1966 to avoid the gang violence and tumultuous atmosphere of Chica-
go, to give their children a safer environment in which to thrive. They were blessed with three children: Winnetka (Wanda), Sidney Jr, and Anthony. She is the grandmother of 8 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Being Frank It is the time of year where everyone seems to be upbeat. Yes, wonderful people, it is Christmas time. The month of December seems to bring out a positive vibe in everyone in the USA. The Secret Santa gifts or simply looking at decorated trees seems to bring out a sense of humanity in the US population. I say enjoy these 31 days with gusto. I know there are factions that say Christmas is a myth. Well so is the tale of the great Christopher Columbus. I would like to believe that there are no longer any children who believe in Santa Claus in 2019. Technology has eradicated any sense of wonder in many children and they can Google if Santa is real or not. Yet, this time of year still makes people warm

up to others and act civil. So myth or not, I say go Christmas. I am long past standing in front of a Christmas tree and singing The First Noel. I will admit that I may not see the value of this task while others seem to value trees and caroling. I am not a fool and understand that while people are singing carols at least they are not calling you vile names. Anything that can make people act cheerful and humane towards others is something the world needs more of. The only problem I have with Christmas is that it is only once a year. Many factions use several excuses to bash and bring Christmas down. Some people claim that Jesus wasn’t born on December 25th. This is probably true. I wonder if
Jesus was born at all the way the people who worship in His name act. My question is, “Who cares about the Jesus birthday part if the day brings cheer to people?” I’m not saying everything that makes people happy is okay, but Christmas is non-threatening and can be fun. The economic value has been lauded as the true reason Christmas even exists. Once again maybe some brilliant business people got together and decided to create
a holiday that would make retail boom. Good. Fine. You don’t have to spend a dime. I don’t. I will enjoy the fact that most people with a brain act considerably better during this time. Once again I am coming from what I see. Other people may have an entirely different viewpoint, but this column is called Being Frank and I’m him. To be honest Christmas likely began as a pagan holiday. The roots of the celebration may have ties with the Winter Solstice rituals of times past. If so then, who cares? They say a Cadillac Escalade is on a Chevy frame. Those who drop the 75 grand to buy an Escalade could care less. That should be the overwhelming opinion pertaining to Christmas. The opinion stating that the
results are all that matters. With these previous thoughts fomenting in your grey matter, I will bid you adieu. Get out of the house and go look at the Christmas decorations downtown and in the malls. Good people, enjoy these 31 days to the max because the other 334 may be hell. COMMUNITY COLUMN Newest UWM graduates show education’s life-changing power By Mark A. Mone Chancellor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee held its 121st graduation ceremony on Dec. 15, and more than 2,100 students earned the right to walk across the commencement stage at UWM Panther Arena. Over the course of 2019, more than 5,000 students graduated from UWM, which is the most diverse campus in the UW System. Even more remarkable than the number of graduates are their inspiring personal stories. I wish I could share them all. Today, I’ll share just a few of the many stories from our December graduating class. Nisreen Atta has been working up to 40 hours per week in the emergency department at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center while studying at UWM to become a nurse. Despite having no previous nursing experience,
Chancellor Mark Mone celebrates UWM’s new graduates. she’s excelled at work and in school. And all the while, Atta has been heavily involved in the community. Atta helped organize an event that provided more than 100,000 food packs and hundreds of clothing items for Syrian and Somali refugees. She’s been secretary of UWM’s Muslim Student Association, worked with the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Stein
Scholars program and serves on the steering committee of a new organization, the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance. She’s accepted a job as a nurse after graduation in the St. Luke’s emergency department. Joshua Starkey has had so many internships, he loses count: “Roughly six,” he said. And they’ve been with some of the leading compa-
nies in southeastern Wisconsin, including Northwestern Mutual, Aurora Health Care, Foxconn and a few local startups. These internships have given the new computer engineering graduate a chance to build his skills and his professional network. Plus, Starkey has had the chance to see the world, including two trips to Taiwan. It’s all led to him accepting a job with Foxconn even before graduation. After retiring from the military with full disability, Kimberly Stuart lost her sense of purpose. But her volunteer efforts with military nonprofits led her to UWM’s Nonprofit Management and Leadership master’s program, and that made all the difference. “It not only changed my life, it literally saved my life,” she said. Stuart is now chairman and CEO of Veterans for Diversity, a group that provides services to improve the mental, physical and emo-
tional health for LGBTQ+ veterans. It’s Wisconsin’s only organization focusing on LGBTQ+ veterans and service members. Nisreen, Joshua and Kimberly are just a few examples of the diverse and inspiring individuals who graduate from UWM and go on to positively impact others in our community and the wider world. Our December graduating class received 1,377 bachelor’s degrees, 591 master’s degrees, 120 doctoral degrees and 64 associate degrees. Our degree recipients ranged in age from as young as 20 to as old as 75. We are proud of every one of them and excited to see them embark on the next chapters of their lives. They are the faces of the future and inspire us all to see just how life-changing higher education can be.

Prediabetic? Here are 4 steps to turn your diagnosis around! A prediabetes diagnosis can be scary, especially if you don’t know much about the disease. However, getting diagnosed with prediabetes can actually be a benefit to you because it allows you to change your habits before this disease turns into type 2 diabetes. One of the best ways to do that is to improve your eating habits. Here are some tips to improve your diet and help you prevent future health complications. First, what exactly is prediabetes? Prediabetes is a health condition that occurs when someone has abnormally high blood sugar levels, but not so high as to be considered type 2 diabetes. This is usually because the body has become resistant to insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. Insulin resistance is usually brought on from carrying excess weight in the body. Although, you don’t have to be obese to be at risk for prediabetes. Dietary choices also play a huge role in your risk of developing diabetes. A healthy prediabetic diet isn’t much different from any other healthy diet. The key is to be more conscious about the things you eat in order to control your blood sugar levels. Here are some tips to help you make better dietary choices. 1. Start by adding things to your diet rather than taking things away.
Traditional African American diets are usually high in carbohydrates and low in fiber, which makes them more susceptible to developing insulin insensitivity. But instead of trying to completely cut out your favorite foods, work to incorporate healthier foods into your diet. A well-balanced diet is just that— well-balanced. This means you should be consuming an equal mix of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, healthy fats, and lean proteins. Every meal you eat should have something from at least four of these six groups. The more healthy foods you eat throughout the day, the less room you will have for foods that aren’t as healthy for you. 2. Avoid foods with a high glycemic index. Once you’ve gotten used to eating healthier foods, you can start actively avoiding foods that aren’t so good for you. While you’re working to
create a more balanced diet, try to steer away from foods that have a high glycemic index, which ranks carbohydrates according to the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels. Foods with high GI values, like refined carbs found in white bread, sugar, and pre-packaged foods create spikes in your blood sugar levels, which contributes to insulin insensitivity. These foods also promote weight gain in the body, which makes it more likely for your prediabetes to turn into type 2 diabetes in the future. Instead, look for foods that have lower GI scores, like whole-wheat options. Swapping high GI carbohydrates for low GI carbohydrates also makes it easier for you to manage your weight. Just a 5-7 percent reduction of body weight can significantly reduce your chances of developing diabetes. It’s important to remember that you don’t want to complete-
ly eliminate carbs from your diet, as this can lead to malnourishment and can actually make it more difficult for you to lose weight. If you’re unsure of what steps you need to take to change your diet, you can try signing up for a scientifically-proven weight loss program, like Weight Watchers, that can assist you in creating healthier eating habits to prevent future health complications. 3. Maintain a consistent eating schedule. A consistent eating schedule helps to regulate your body’s blood sugar levels. A skipped meal results in your body’s blood sugar dropping lower than normal, which in the short term makes you irritable and fatigued and in the long term can slow down your metabolism, and in turn hinders weight loss. Your blood sugar levels spike the next time that you do eat, which makes it more likely that you will become resistant to your body’s insulin. This is why it’s important for those who have prediabetes to stick to a consistent eating schedule by eating several small, healthy meals throughout the day. If you’re someone who has trouble finding consistency every day, try mentally planning your meals when you wake up in the morning. Have an idea for what you plan on eating for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and figure out when you’ll have time to eat. You can also set an alarm
on your phone to remind you. This habit will help keep food on your brain so that way you can remember to eat consistently. It also helps to carry snacks with you so that you can still eat even if you’re too busy to stop and get something or if you couldn’t make a meal ahead of time. Try for snacks that are both portable and high in protein to keep you full throughout the day. 4. Remember to exercise. Diet and exercise go hand in hand when working to prevent diabetes. Exercise helps reduce blood sugar levels and makes your body more sensitive to insulin. While exercise alone won’t prevent you from developing diabetes, it’s a very useful tool when paired with healthy diet practices. Work to incorporate at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day into your schedule. This activity can be as simple as taking a walk after lunch or deep cleaning your house. Enlist the help of your friends and family to do more physical activities with you or find a support group if you lack the motivation yourself. Remember, every healthy habit you form can be the difference between you getting rid of your prediabetes or developing type 2 diabetes. Following these tips, as well as the instructions provided to you by your doctor, can lead to a healthy, happy life.

Make Your Weight Loss Goals a Reality What is OEA?
