Rev. Jesse Jackson, 76, reveals he has Parkinson’s disease

Prominent civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, he announced Friday, November 17, 2017. “My family and I began to notice changes about three years ago,” Jackson said in a statement. “After a battery of tests, my physicians identified the issue as Parkinson's disease, a disease that bested my father.” A neurological disorder with no known cure, Parkinson’s is commonly associated with tremors, stiffness and difficulty with walking and balancing. Northwestern Medicine in Chicago said in a statement that Jackson was diagnosed with the disease in 2015 and has been treated as an outpatient in the years since. Congressman Danny Davis (D-IL) told NBC Chicago that those who have been close to Jackson recently "have noticed some of the

signs." Jackson also said that “recognition of the effects of this disease on me has been painful” and that he has “been slow to grasp the gravity of it.” Jackson, 76, was born in Greenville, South Carolina, and later became known for participating in civil rights demonstrations alongside Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. He later ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988. In 1999, Jackson was credited with successfully negotiating the release of three U.S. soldiers who were held in Yugoslavia, and was awarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for those efforts by President Bill Clinton in 2000. “I know Jesse Jackson will keep hope alive as he battles Parkinson’s disease and continues his tireless com-

Rev. Jesse Jackson mitment to justice and civil rights,” Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) said on Twitter. “Praying for him and his family.” In an Instagram video, Rev. Al Sharpton said he spent the last few days with Jackson and others in New York and reflected on his impact on American politics and the

civil rights movement. “As I watched him, I thought about the greatness of this man,” Sharpton, an MSNBC host, said in the video. “How he continued Martin Luther King’s movement for justice, how he cemented it in the North and made the King movement truly national … He changed the nation, he served in ways he never got credit. No one in our lifetime served longer and stronger. We pray for him, because he’s given his life for us.” Jackson described his Parkinson’s diagnosis as “a signal that I must make lifestyle changes and dedicate myself to physical therapy in hopes of slowing the disease's progression. “It is an opportunity for me to use my voice to help in finding a cure for a disease that afflicts 7 to 10 million worldwide,” he said in a statement. “Some 60,000

Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s every year.” Jackson’s plan to combat Parkinson’s is likely to help slow the progression of his symptoms, but won’t cure the disease, NBC News medical correspondent Dr. John Torres said. Jackson already has the two major risk factors for Parkinson’s disease, Torres said. “Basically he’s got an advanced age, and he’s got a family history of Parkinson’s, so that’s going to make his outlook worse,” Torres said. “What’s going to make it better is more physical activity, family and social support and appropriate medication to slow the symptoms. But eventually the disease going to catch up with him.” Parkinson’s patients typically live for six to 22 more years after their initial diagnosis.

Alderman Johnson shares GoFundMe page for crossing guard hit by reckless driver Statement of Alderman Cavalier Johnson November 14, 2017 "I wanted to express my gratitude for the outpouring of support for Andrew Tyler, the 71-year-old crossing guard struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run late last week. I received a number of inquiries from concerned citizens from across Milwaukee County seeking to help Mr.

Tyler and his family in their time of need. Tragically, Mr. Tyler remains in critical condition and yesterday experienced kidney failure, resulting in the amputation of his left leg. He was simply working to protect our children and keep them safe during their walk to school. "Since retiring from Delphi Automotive, Mr. Tyler has served as a school crossing guard through the Mil-

waukee Police Department for more than nine years. His four daughters and many grandchildren love him dearly, and genuinely appreciate the support of the community. If you are interested in assisting Mr. Andrew Tyler and his family, please consider offsetting their medical costs through their GoFundMe page. For details visit: www.gofundme.com/andy-the-crossing-guard.

"Additionally, the Milwaukee Police Department is still searching for the reckless driver responsible for Mr. Tyler’s accident. The police are looking for a burgundy, 4-door, 1997-2001 Buick Park Avenue or LeSabre. I urge anyone with information to call Milwaukee Police at 414-935-7360 and bring justice in this tragic situation."

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

God’s divine fruit basket (Conclusion) One who is a follower of Christ seeks to live a life that glorifies God and therefore endeavors to bear fruit. Jesus insisted that His disciples bear fruit (John 15:4-8). In this conclusion, this writer will briefly examine the remaining fruit: faithfulness, meekness and self-control, which require the greatest amount of submission and surrender. The fruit of faithfulness Responding to faith, the Holy Spirit produces this trait in every believer. To be faithful is to be trustworthy, dependable, and reliable. As with all the other fruit discussed thus far, faithfulness is rooted in the character and work of God Himself. He is always dependable in His relationship with us; He alone is the One we can be certain will never let us down or disappoint us. He promises us: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5). As this fruit grows within us, we become more trustworthy; and thus, more faithful to God in our service to Him and to our commitments made to others.

encourages them to practice self-control. Self-control is vital to spiritual maturity.

The fruit of meekness Along with the fruit of faithfulness and self-control, the believer who produces this fruit shows maturity when they can conquer the flesh and be filled with the Spirit of God within their lives. Unlike the wisecrack that states “meekness is weakness,” weakness means lack of strength while meekness means lack of flaunting strength or strength under control. God wants to develop the fruit of meekness in all our lives, which is strength under control. “Blessed are the meek: for they shall in-

herit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5) The fruit of self-control (temperance) Self-control means: “to grip” or to “take hold of.” This word describes a person who is willing to get a grip on their lives and take control of areas that will bring them success or failure. It is the power to keep oneself in check. It is the quality that gives victory over fleshly desires. In 1 Thessalonians 4:1, Paul encourages the Thessalonians to walk in a way which pleases God. He

This month we examined the nine “fruit” of the Spirit that Paul listed in Galatians 5. We saw how he carefully and skillfully took these characteristic traits and held them out as an example of the godly traits that must be seen in the life and conduct of the believer. It is God’s intention that Christ characteristically be seen in those that are His. If this fruit represents the character of Christ, then it becomes a privilege for every believer to bear fruit. We pray that you have appreciated this brief rendering on the dynamic fruit of the Holy Spirit. As we pause to celebrate Thanksgiving, let us continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ as we allow the Fruit of the Holy Spirit to grow and develop within us.

Looking back on my family’s holiday traditions, I’m filled with a nostalgic blend of happiness and hazy remembrance. I can’t always remember every detail, but the impression of holidays and family Christmas traditions glide past, all accompanied by starry lights, fragrant evergreen needles, and the constancy of cinnamon in the kitchen. While some family Christmas traditions remain the same year after year, it's never too late to start a new tradition with family and friends. This holiday season, make new memories and start a few fresh family traditions that you’ll look forward to year after year. FAMILY FEATURES

riendsgiving is the perfect opportunity to celebrate your second family with festive, fun recipes that stray a bit away from traditional fare. “Friendsgiving is often held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving,” said Chef Kevan Vetter of the McCormick Kitchens. “It’s more of a potluck party than a traditional Thanksgiving – everyone is usually assigned a dish. Instead of stuffing or a green bean casserole, bring a dish that’s a little more fun, like corn pudding with a dash of smoky heat from chipotle chili pepper.” These recipes for a caramelized Brie and a chocolatey red wine from the McCormick kitchens are also sure to please. If your party falls after the big day, put those turkey leftovers to good use with a cheesy turkey crescent ring perfect for feeding a group of friends. Find more recipes to share with friends this season at McCormick.com.

Leftover Turkey Taco Crescent Ring

Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Servings: 10 1 package McCormick Original Taco Seasoning Mix, divided 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup finely chopped onion 2 cups shredded, cooked turkey 1 can (15 1/4 ounces) whole-kernel corn, drained 1 can (10 ounces) diced tomatoes and chilies, drained 1 garlic clove, minced 1 container (8 ounces) whipped cream cheese 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided 2 packages (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent dinner rolls Heat oven to 375 F. Reserve 1 teaspoon taco seasoning mix in small bowl; set aside. In medium saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Add onion; cook and stir 3 minutes, or until tender. Add turkey, corn, tomatoes, garlic and remaining seasoning mix. Cook and stir 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in cream cheese and 1 cup shredded cheese. Unroll crescent roll dough on greased or parchment paper-lined baking pan. Separate into triangles. Arrange triangles to resemble sun with center open. Press dough where bottoms of triangles overlap. Spoon turkey mixture in ring where dough overlaps. Fold triangle points over filling, tucking into bottom layer to secure. Continue until entire ring is enclosed. Bake 15 minutes, or until golden brown. In bowl, stir remaining shredded cheese into reserved seasoning mix. Remove ring from oven. Sprinkle with cheese mixture. Bake 5 minutes longer, or until cheese is melted. Serve with desired toppings, such as shredded lettuce, sour cream or guacamole.
