Education is a partnership between home, school and community. The Men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, Kappa Phi Chapter recognize the need for positive role models in each and every community. As a result, they have dedicated their time and efforts to help the youth in our communities. Part of that includes hosting the "2nd Annual Kappa Phi Chapter Spelling Bee” on Friday, May 13, 2016. The event was held at Dr. Benjamin Carson Academy of Science and Learning, 4915 W. Capitol Drive. The event consisted of 20 participants, all of which were 3rd and 4th grade students. During the spelling bee the students were encouraged to challenge themselves and were given uplifting encouragement by the brothers. The judges of the event were Omega Men Major Cooper and Andre Powell. Other participants in the event were Omega brothers Arras V. Martin (Master of Ceremonies) and Richard Watkins. Event Chairman Marcel A. Clarke said, "The Spelling Bees are a long-running tradition that encourages young children to develop their vocabulary and spelling skills. I recall winning a spelling bee as a 7th grader in Chicago and the confidence gained from the experience lasted a lifetime. It is our belief that spelling bees foster a positive mindset, as well as help our students develop self-confidence and self-worth. Hopefully we can create that same spirit in these participants.

Black Business Expo will bring together small business owners Retona Wilson has been fascinated with business and working with other people to solve problems since she was a child. About a year ago, she started her second business venture: Naked Truth Body Essentials. On Sunday May 22, 2016 she is sponsoring a Black Business Expo for small business owners from 2-7 p.m. at the 3041 North Lounge. The event is sponsored by Mahogany Expressions, a jewelry and clothing store which is owned by Sheneta Hamilton. Mahogany Expressions is a title sponsor and Hamilton, the owner, has been a big help in organizing the Black Business Expo, Wilson said. All products made by Wilson are handmade and homemade, she said. She believes that the more pure and

simple the better. “What you put on your skin goes into your blood,” she explains. In addition to running her own business out of her home, Wilson is also a full-time student studying e-commerce at MATC and also has a full-time job as a Chef Case Associate at Whole Foods Market. Despite a wide social circle, Wilson said she found it frustrating trying to connect with other small minority business owners in Milwaukee. She said most of her customers come either by word of mouth or they find her Facebook page. A few months ago, Wilson came up with the idea of hosting a Black Business Expo for small business owners in Milwaukee. The purpose is to familiar-

Retona Wilson ize other minority business owners with each other and to publicize the technical, mechanical and production skills they can provide, she said. “I go to a lot of events and make a point of trying

to make connections and I’ve had good success with Facebook, but I am continually surprised by the breadth of talent that too often gets overlooked because bigger corporations have better name recognition.” Although not a Milwaukee native, she spent most of her life here, graduating from Pulaski High School in 2012. “I was born in the beautiful red clay and sunny country side of rural Georgia,” Wilson writes on her company website (www.nakedtruthbody.com). “Most of my days in communal living as a small child were spent learning and the rest was spent imagining the daylight away and playing with the other children of the community. I had no worries in the world.

“From there I was moved with my mother and younger brother from the slow country side to a faster, urban city in the Midwest called Milwaukee. It was a major game changer. I quickly grew into an adult where I retained my childhood ability to be creative. I loved to draw, read, and write. I felt that a career in soap making would suit me very well.” Thanks in part to her active Facebook publishing, Wilson said she already has 209 confirmed reservations and another 586 individuals who have expressed interest in attending. Wilson said she expects most guests to drop by for an hour or so. There will be an opportunity for an open mike discussion and games for children.

Rebuilding Our Community Maybe I missed something, didn’t get that email, didn't hear the special breaking news report or just did not quite understand what some people are saying about progress in urban America. I just don’t know what they've seen, heard, what they have come to believe or been drinking. I know about the new construction ventures, expanding businesses, mergers, innovations, new technologies and breakthroughs. And I get that and appreciate the forward movement and thinking. Somehow or in some way, what I am seeing and what others are seeing or omitting are two different things. But this is one thing I know for sure; urban America has a long way to go in order to make a comeback or to reinvent itself from those famous glory days during the

“golden era of industry and manufacturing.” This is not just occurring here in Milwaukee, but throughout every urban center in America that was built upon having a large labor force in mass manufacturing. With that era gone, urban America also loss livable wage jobs, businesses and educational training centers. And now those days

are but distant memories that have left so much of America in shambles with hollowed out cities and ghost towns. Those days are gone and shall never return, but the lingering long term effects and the transition from an industrial-based economy to technology-driven economy continues to leave an entire

If you don’t believe me about unfit parents ask any schoolteacher. Many people will agree with the previous statements. Well, Sherlock, those statements bring us to the cusp of the matter. Children are out of control.

Being Frank Children are a blessing from God. Children light up lives and bring joy. A child is born innocent and pure. The previous statements sound great and may have been true at one time. In 2016, society may have to reevaluate the status of children. In many cases a child’s status can easily be changed from blessing to curse. I know this sounds harsh but in order to get better, society has to see the truth. In today’s society many children are out of control. Whether it is in a classroom or neighborhood many children are running amok. I can hear the people screaming, “Children are innocent creatures incapable of bringing misery.” This may have been true in 1955, but in 2016 things have changed. The parenting in the USA doesn’t help matters. In many cases a child is born to a single parent with plenty of

Perspectives

Wednesday, May 25, 2016

To be fair, the 2016 child can’t be blamed for incompetent parents. But if the parents are incompetent, how can they raise competent children? This is not an economic situation either. Some of the worst behavior problems in society stem from children who have parents who earn decent livings. On the other hand there are examples of well-mannered children who live in the dredges of society.

I can hear the blind pundits claiming all children are good. No one is saying a child isn’t good, or of use. What is being said is, the root of many problems that plague society stem from out of control children of all races. Think of the problems out of control children create. Would there be street gangs menacing whole communities? Would schools be failure zones? Would there be a need for juvenile court? Exactly. Please stop blaming poverty. With housing or Section 8 laws, families receive adequate residences. In many cases low-income families move into new houses or better neighborhoods. Sadly this new lease on life doesn’t change child behavior. Usually the low-income children run rampant over the new community, or are tearing up the provided house. No one is saying this happens all of the time but the rate is high. The argument that too many grandmothers are raising children is obsolete also. There was a time the last person a child wanted to offend was grandmother. The child knew that grandmother would punish them along with Mama and Daddy. Only a fool would chance three punishments for one issue. I will concede that the type of grandmother is a part of the problem. The problem grandmother is one who is to busy wearing PINK clothing and yards of weave. Well,

you get the picture. “It takes a village to raise a child.” What a beautiful saying, but it's useless. If you were to redirect a child the parents would be angrily knocking on your door. Be honest, when you see some of these children you look away in disgust. The first thought that crosses your mind is, “Those kids are bad as Hades.” With this in mind can you see the point? Children have to be shaped. The hand that shapes a child has to be steady. Too many parents, of all economic backgrounds, have jittery hands. These parents are creating the very menace they move all over cities to avoid. Children are things of beauty and infinite possibility. There is a fine line between beauty and ugliness. Infinite possibility can lead to great successes or limitless anguish. As you look out your window at your child or grandchild what do you see? More importantly, is your vision true or a hallucination? A celebration of Motherhood (Part 3) “My son, keep your father’s commandments, and forsake not your mother’s teachings. Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you.” - Proverbs 6:20-22 All month this column has been sharing articles from mothers in response to: “What Have Been Your Greatest Joys of Motherhood?” As you read these amazing responses, this writer prays you are blessed and encouraged by the submissions this week: *** The greatest honor for me would be to extend my gratitude to my mother. I am the 10th child of 13. My mother, Dorothea C. Ralph, who will be 75 years old in August 2016, is a strong, proud mother of eight of all but three of my siblings. As a single parent, she juggled two jobs to provide throughout the years, teaching basic

of motherhood is whenever I'm having a bad day they always give me strength to be a better person than I was yesterday. Last but not least is that my children and I get to make everlasting memories each day. I have many other great joys but these are the ones that stood out the most. - Ashley Kerrens Mother of 3: Isaiah, 9, Zion, 4 and Genesis, 2 months old *** skills and training my elder siblings to care for those of us that were younger. Many times our meals were creative. However, I cannot remember ever needing or wanting anything. Her character has shaped, molded, and cultivated the men and women we've all become. She kept a very firm hand and delivered wisdom in every instance. Although her strength has diminished immensely, she has always been and still is, a force to be reckoned with, especially where her children are concerned. My mother continues to be God's beautiful blessing to her children, grandchildren,

great-grandchildren and me. The core values she has instilled in us all we can now carry on for generations to come. I, Dagmar Ralph, am an extension of my mother. I thank her and wish her "Happy Mother's Day!" *** I never thought I would get the chance to be a mother but I've been blessed three times with the most joyous gifts. My first joy of motherhood is that my children don't discriminate against me. They love me for me, not for what I have or what I look like. The second joy

Motherhood has tested my strength in all sorts of ways. My role as a mother requires me to be a nurturer, teacher, nurse, magician and sometimes a drill sergeant. However, it’s a journey that began 13 years ago and has allowed me to grow into a better person. This ride has given me a sense of purpose. As I look in my son’s eyes, I see my baby boy that came into this world 2 months early to meet me. I also see the hard work that I have put into raising such a handsome, mannerable, young man. He’s my favorite boy, my heartbeat, and my rock. I thank God for my

The Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Braves Historical Association inducted former Milwaukee Braves outfielder Bill Bruton into the Braves Honor Roll. An induction ceremony took place at Miller Park on Monday, May 16, 2016, at the site of the Braves Honor Roll, which is located on the Miller Park Field Level Concourse along the third base side. The lighting-quick center fielder spent eight of his 12 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Milwaukee Braves from 1953-1960. He batted .276 with 48 HR, 327 RBI and 143 stolen bases with the Braves. Bruton finished his career with the Detroit Tigers from 1961-64. He passed away on December 5, 1995. Pictured are three generations of Bill Bruton's family and close friends, who showed up to accept the honor on his behalf.

Family, friends and supporters of Za’layia Jenkins held a commemoration of the life of the nine-yearold girl who was shot in the face by a stray bullet on Thursday, May 5, 2016. Police found more than 40 shell casings near the intersection of North 15th and W. Meinecke street. On Monday May 16, hospital officials informed the family that the little girl no longer had any brain function and was clinically dead. She would have been 10 years old the following day which is when the family organized the commemoration of her short life. There are no suspects in custody or under investigation. The FBI and Hupy and Abraham S.C., a prominent law firm in Milwaukee, have offered a $35,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators. In a heartfelt plea to more than 200 supporters gathered at the outdoor memorial service, Za’layia’s mother, Destiny Boone, pleaded for anyone with information to come forward and assist in apprehending the murderer(s).

contribute to the fund that provides the scholarships that are awarded annually. The amount of the individual scholarships varies from $750 to $1,500, depending on the quality of the applicant’s essay, the extent of the applicant’s participation in service activities, including participation in the MLK All-A-Thon, and the applicant’s stated life goals. “The annual MLK Scholarship All-A-Thon, with a wide diversity of participants, is a powerful celebration of the value of education and the potential of youth,” stated Tuwania Anderson, co-chair of the MLK Scholarship Coalition Board. “It also is a strong sign of community togetherness,” she added. The MLK Scholarship program was inaugurated in 1976, resulting from an initiative of three clergy serving in Milwaukee at the time: The late Rev. Ernest Glenn, Christ Presbyterian Church; Rev. James Lyles, Metropolitan United Methodist minister; and Rev. Joseph Ellwanger, Cross Lutheran Church. The scholarship program, requiring each applicant to write an essay on some aspect of Dr. King’s writings or activities, was envisioned as a way of keeping Dr. King’s legacy alive in the hearts and minds of succeeding generations. For more information, contact Rev. Joseph Ellwanger, co-chair of the MLK Scholarship Coalition Board, 414-791-2480.

For the second straight year, a group of Milwaukee Public Schools students studying mobile app development is among the winners of a national app competition. North Division High School students Tatiana Loyd and Qiaira Matthews’ “Emoji Encouragement” app is one of just six national winners in the Lenovo Scholars Network competition, Lenovo and the National Academy of Finance (NAF) announced this week. The app is designed to support students battling cancer, sickle cell anemia and other diseases with words of encouragement. Students stayed after school, worked from home and even came in over spring break to work on the app and accompanying presentation, North Division lead computer science teacher Melissa Menge said. U.S. Health Report Card finds racial, ethnic disparities persist But infant death rates, numbers of uninsured are improving, government analysis reveals

A report card on Americans’ health finds that racial and ethnic disparities persist, with significant gaps in obesity, cesarean births and dental care. But advances have been made in some important areas, including infant death rates, women smokers and numbers of uninsured, according to a new report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “We have seen important improvements in some health measures for racial and ethnic minority populations since ... 1985,” said Dr. J. Nadine Gracia, deputy assistant secretary for minority health and director of the HHS Office of Minority Health. “While there has been significant progress in our jour-

ney toward health equity, disparities still exist and we must remain vigilant in our efforts to end health disparities in America,” Gracia added in an agency news release. The 39th annual report on the nation’s health was prepared by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. Highlights include: • Regarding infant mortality among five ethnic/racial groups analyzed, the difference between the highest (blacks) and lowest (Asian/ Pacific Islander) infant death rates narrowed from 9.41 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1999 to 7.21 in 2013. • Among women, the di-

vide between the highest (white) and lowest (Asian) rates of current cigarette smokers narrowed from 17.5 percent in 1999 to 13.2 percent in 2014. • The gap between the highest and lowest percentage of uninsured adults ages 18 to 64 decreased from 24.9 percent in 1999 (Hispanics versus whites) to 19.9 percent in the first six months of 2015

(Hispanics vs. Asians). • Looking at low-risk cesarean deliveries from 1999 to 2014, researchers found that black mothers had the highest percentage (29.9 percent in 2014) among the five racial and ethnic groups while American Indian or Alaska Native mothers had the lowest (21.5 percent in 2014). • Cuban mothers had the highest percentage of low-risk cesarean deliveries among the five Hispanic groups (41.4 percent in 2014) while Mexicans had the lowest (24.1 percent in 2014). • Childhood obesity rates varied widely, too. Hispanics ages 2 to 19 had the highest rate of obesity (21.9 percent) between 2011 and 2014 while Asians had the lowest rate (8.6 percent).

• Hispanic adults were most likely to go without needed dental care in 2014. Nearly 16 percent had not received needed dental care in the past 12 months because of cost. This was true for just over 6 percent of Asians. • Uninsured rates improved among adults between 2013 and 2014 -- falling 28 percent in states that expanded Medicaid programs to include low-income adults and 14 percent in states that did not expand Medicaid programs. • Prescription drug spending continued to climb, totaling $297.7 billion in 2014 -- up 12.2 percent from the previous year. Gotta minute? Get a good workout Study found 60 seconds of intense exercise as effective as 45 minutes of moderate exertion

Couch potatoes, there are no more excuses. New research from Canada contends that just one minute of high-intensity exercise can boost your health as much as 45 minutes of a moderate workout. That means you can’t claim that you don’t have enough time to get in shape. “Most people cite ‘lack of time’ as the main reason for not being active,” said study author Martin Gibala, a professor of kinesiology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. “Our study shows that an interval-based [intense] approach can be more efficient -- you can get health and fitness benefits comparable to the traditional approach, in less time.” The study included 27 inactive men who were randomly assigned to do either intense or moderate workouts three times a week for 12 weeks, or to a control group that did not exercise. The intense exercise was so-called sprint interval training, which involved three 20-second “all out”

sprints on exercise bikes. It also included a two-minute warmup, a three-minute cool-down, and two minutes of easy cycling for recovery between the intense sprints. Total time: 10 minutes per workout. The men in the moderate workout group did 45 minutes of continuous cycling at a moderate pace, plus the same warmup and cooldown as those in the sprint interval group. After 12 weeks, both exercise groups had similar measures of heart/lung fitness and insulin sensitivity, a measure of how the body regulates blood sugar. Interval-based training “is a very time-efficient workout strategy. Brief bursts of intense exercise are remarkably effective,” Gibala said in a university news release. “The basic principles apply to many forms of exercise. Climbing a few flights of stairs on your lunch hour can provide a quick and effective workout. The health benefits are significant,” he added.

Wealth Building

By Nathaniel Sillin Director of Visa’s financial education programs

Getting your finances ready for adoption The decision to start a family is a joyful event. However, parents considering adoption should consider advance planning for a range of financial issues unique to the process and the child they hope to bring into their home. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the costs of adopting (https://www. childwelfare.gov) may be a few hundred dollars or can easily exceed $40,000 based on the form of adoption you choose. So how do you get your finances ready for adoption? By doing your homework and making sure the price and processing work of adoption – all adoption resources, rules and requirements differ locally – won’t eclipse other essential financial goals like retirement, saving for your future child’s education and of course, the higher daily living expenses common to all new families. Start with these tips: 1. Evaluate your own finances first. It’s generally a good idea to work with qualified financial or tax experts

to evaluate whether you can manage adoption costs from savings or grants you don’t have to pay back. Starting a family is a major overall financial commitment no matter what path you take to build yours. 2. Know the tax benefits of adoption. The federal government offers tax breaks for adoption, but you need to study and follow the rules. According to the IRS, tax benefits for adoption include both a tax credit for qualified adoption expenses paid to adopt an eligible child and an exclusion from income for employer-provided adoption assistance. The credit is non-

refundable, meaning that it is limited to one’s tax liability for the year. Any credit in excess of tax liability may be carried for up to five years. Adoptions of special needs children may qualify for special treatment. Visit IRS.gov for more details. 3. Check your workplace benefits. A 2013 Aon Hewitt study said only 12 percent of U.S. employers offered a financial adoption benefit in 1990 rising to 52 percent. Check with your employer to see whether they offer adoption benefits, and factor those benefits into your overall financial plan.

4. Know your legal costs. Adoption is a legal process, and depending on the kind of adoption process you pursue, it is wise to work with an attorney to make sure your application is in order and your rights are being protected. 4. Think about insurance. Life and health insurance options need to be reviewed for cost and thoroughness of coverage before you begin the adoption process. Life insurance may come up as part of the estate-planning process, but health insurance in particular requires special consideration in case the child you plan to adopt has medical or developmental needs. 5. Evaluate available adoption grants. Various community groups, religious organizations and nonprofit organizations and foundations may be a resource of grant funding for the adop-

tion process. Work with trusted advisors to find out if these resources are reliable and could help you afford your adoption. 6. Network and learn. Many communities and organizations sponsor support and planning groups for parents of adopted kids and those planning to adopt. Depending on the adoption avenue you’re considering, make it a point to get to know parents who have already gone through the process to understand all sides of what their lives as adoptive parents are like – make your learning process about more than the money. Bottom line: Adoption is one of life’s most rewarding events. The amount of financial planning you can do to support your adoption process will help give your new family the best possible start.

Thursday, May 19: On this date the first edition of Colored American Magazine launched in Boston in 1900. It was one of the first monthly magazines catered to the African American reader. The magazine covered virtually every topic associated with being an African American. The editorial staff of the magazine sought to appeal to the newly emerging middle class, educated African Americans and those interested in the arts and sciences. Although the magazine only was published for nine years, it helped create a more positive impression of African Americans. The magazine portrayed blacks as dignified, educationally curious, diligent and prosperous just a few years after the abolition of slavery. Friday, May 20: Hoping that a quick campaign of violent terror would discourage freedom riders from challenging segregation in interstate travel, a white mob attacked a third Freedom Rider bus in less than a month. This one occurred in Montgomery, Alabama. The mob used chains and axe handles on this date in 1961. Because of the local officers’ ineffectiveness, federal marshals had to be eventually dispatched by Attorney General Robert Kennedy. The Ku Klux Klan hoped that this violent treatment would stop other young people from taking part in freedom rides. Instead of being cowed, the attacks energized the movement and over the next six months, more 1,000 people took part in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) freedom rides of 1961. Saturday, May 21: U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch was born on this date in 1959. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and American literature from Harvard College in 1981 and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1984. In 1999, she was nominated by President Bill Clinton to serve as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. On November 8, 2014, President Barack Obama nominated Lynch for the position of U.S. Attorney General, succeeding Eric Holder, who had previously announced his resignation pending confirmation of his replacement. She is the first African American woman; the second African American (after Holder) and the second woman, after Janet Reno, to hold this office. Sunday, May 22: African American television news journalist Bernard Shaw was born this date in 1940. He worked as a correspondent in the Washington Bureau of CBS News from 1971 to 1977. In 1977, he moved to ABC News as Latin American correspondent and bureau chief before becoming the Capitol Hill Senior Correspondent. He left ABC in 1980 to move to CNN as its Principal Anchor. In 2001, at the age of 60, Shaw decided to retire from CNN. He said he misses his colleagues, but not working. He now spends time with his wife, Linda, and two children. Monday, May 23: The birth of African American Pullman Porter and union activist Frank Boyd in 1881 is celebrated on this date. Born in Atchison, Kansas, his father was a former slave from Kentucky. Boyd spent his earlier years as the offspring of a struggling sharecropper. Shortly after his fourth birthday, his mother died leaving him and his siblings with his father and relatives. Boyd was forced to take on odd jobs in order to help the family finances. His luck seemed to turn in 1907 when he was hired as a Pullman Porter; a Pullman Porter was essentially a combination of a waiter and a butler for train passengers. The job was almost exclusively filled by African American men. The position carried status and paid better than many other jobs available to blacks, but compared to whites doing comparable work, it was only about one-third the amount. On August 25, 1925, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) labor union headed by A. Phillip Randolph and Ashley Totten was formed in Harlem, New York. This was the first union in the U.S. to be recognized by the employer as the bargaining agent for its union members. Frank Boyd immediately joined the union and began organizing the St. Paul Local #3. His effectiveness in recruiting new members soon earned him the enmity of the railroad and he was fired as a porter at the height of the Great Depression in the early 1930s. Later in his life he was elected as one of three African American delegates to the 1952 Democratic National Convention from Minnesota. Tuesday, May 24: On this date in 1854, fugitive slave Anthony Burns was returned to the South from Boston. Burns was 20 when he escaped to Boston. There, for a few short months, he lived and worked as a free man. But he was arrested and held without bail after his former owner claimed him. But Burns had powerful allies: thousands of abolitionists who saw him as a symbol of freedom imperiled; the Boston Vigilance Committee, a group of legal professionals sworn to use any means within their power to defend the rights of fugitive slaves; and Richard Dana, the patrician lawyer and author of “Two Years Before the Mast,” stepped forward to defend Anthony without charge. It cost the federal government $100,000 to return him. Convicted of being a fugitive slave on this date in 1854, an estimated 50,000 citizens lined the streets of Boston, watching Burns walk in shackles toward the waterfront and the waiting ship. A black church soon raised $1300 to purchase Burns’ freedom and in less than a year, Anthony Burns was back in Boston a free man. Wednesday, May 25: Writer and Howard University African American librarian Dorothy Burnett Porter Wesley was born. She was the oldest of four children and the daughter of a doctor. The family was raised in Montclair, N.J., where the children attended public schools. After high school, Dorothy enrolled at the Minor Normal School in Washington, D.C. In 1926, she transferred to Howard, then to Columbia University, intent on becoming a librarian. She became the first African American to receive a Master’s degree in library science in 1932. With the appointment to her first job in research, a new era began for the Jesse Moorland collection at Howard University. It continued when the Moorland Foundation was established as a research library. Over the next 43 years, Dorothy Burnett Porter devoted herself to developing a modern research library to serve the needs of the Howard University community, as well as an international community of scholars. She greatly augmented the collection’s holdings, and the opening of the Founder’s Library in 1939 made substantial expansion possible. Her work helped create the field of black studies by making research material accessible. Wesley retired from Howard in 1973. For her years of service, the university named the library reading room the “Dorothy B. Porter Reading Room.”
