Milwaukee celebrates 45th Juneteenth Day with parade and street festival Sunday, June 19, 2016 was not only Father's Day, it was also Juneteenth Day. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Milwaukee commemorated this event with a parade and an all-day street festival. The 45th Annual Juneteenth Celebration also launched the inaugural #BRONZEVILLESUMMER series, an entire season of events appealing to lovers of music, art, food, culture and fun. This year's theme for Juneteenth was "Celebrating the Journey of Fatherhood." Pictured at the Juneteenth event are (from left) Miss Juneteenth 2016; Miss Junior Juneteenth 2016; Northcott Neighborhood House president and CEO Mack Weddle; Garfield's 502 Club owner LaMarr Franklin, and both Miss Juneteenth 2016 runners up. 500 Fathers stand up against violence

On Friday June 17, 2016 Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton and Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, along with Mayor Tom Barrett and more than a hundred Milwaukee fathers attended a rally, to helping put a stop to violence in the community. The event was hosted in Moody Park, which is located in Alderman Rainey's district. The rally was held to call on Milwaukee fathers to help bring positive change to Milwaukee, by taking an oath to help put an end to violence on the streets of Milwaukee and help protect our communities. Mayor Barrett's Fatherhood Initiative partnered with a large number of Milwaukee agencies to call for a "First Annual Safe Summer Father's Day Weekend," due to the unusually high numbers of violent incidents that have already taken place in the city and the summer is just getting started. North Division graduate celebrates milestone achievement with all white graduation celebration Martinez Milton celebrated the life milestone of graduating from high school, on Friday, June 17, 2016 with an All White Graduation Celebration. The formal affair was held at the Radisson Hotel - West, 2303 N. Mayfair Road, and featured dinner, music and dancing for Martinez, his family and friends who all wore white. Martinez is a graduate of North Division High School, has GPA of 3.48, which was enough to earn him the number one rank out of his graduating class of 70. He has also served as president of the school newspaper and the school yearbook, has served on a number of volunteer committees, has received numerous awards and achievements, including a Letter of Great Achievement from the U.S. House of Representatives; and is a 2016 Milwaukee Times Baclk Excellence/ Louvenia Johnson Scholarship recipient. All impressive feats for any student but even more so, knowing that Martinez has lived with epilepsy/sSeizure disorder all his life. Milwaukee Bucks break ground on new arena, marks beginning of new era

It was a historic day for Milwaukee as the Bucks broke ground on a new arena. The team hosted a ceremony and block party on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the site of the new $500 million complex, with thousands of fans in attendance. Balancing old with the new is no easy task. But with the aging Bradley Center as a backdrop and construction equipment sitting idle, the Bucks are digging in and giving thanks. "Senator Herb Kohl stood up and heeded the call to keep the Bucks in this community and in this state," said Governor Scott Walker.
"He could have sold this team for hundreds of millions of dollars but instead he told the NBA this team is staying in Milwaukee," said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. "I wanted it to happen but so did many, many people. Without all of their support, we know it wouldn't have happened so it is all of our legacy," said Kohl. Support includes $250 million in public money from tax payers across the state. "Public or private, I think that it's a great partnership and I think it's reflective of what can be done when they have a mission and a vision,"
said Mary Baer, Bucks arena supporter. Modesty aside, fans say a new arena would not have been possible without the retired senator. "Put his foot in the ground and kept the Bucks here and we can definitely thank him for that. If it wasn't for him who knows what would have happened," said a Milwaukee Bucks fan. The Bucks owners say this groundbreaking is the halfway point from the time the Bucks arena project started. They hope to be open by the 2018 season.

The crucial need to expand the non-white teacher pipeline "If not for the teachers that I had at PS 276 in Canarsie and Mark Twain Junior High School in Coney Island, New York, I would not be alive today. Maybe I’d be in jail today. But those teachers, they chose to invest in me and to see hope and possibility. Folks could have said, ‘Here’s a young African American, Latino male student going to New York City Schools with a family in crisis. What chance does he have?’ They could’ve given up on me, but they didn’t. They chose to make school this place that was amazing and inspiring and engaging every day. This is what you can bring to students . . . That sense of possibility, that sense of hope, that opportunity to be a child, that opportunity to love and enjoy learning. That is the power that we have as educators, and I hope you will seize that moment. That you will see potential in each of your children." -Secretary of Education John B. King, Jr., speaking at the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® National Training The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) has just completed a week of national training for nearly 2,000 college students and recent graduates preparing to teach in CDF Freedom Schools
summer literacy programs across the country. Most come from the communities they serve and are role models for the children they serve. It is hard to dream of college and what you can be in the future if you don’t see it and we are so proud of the young, energetic, hardworking and committed servant leaders who spend very long hours preparing to serve more than 11,000 low–income children when they return home to 95 cities and communities in 27 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. I hope many or most of them will become public school teachers who love, respect, and set high expectations for every child in their care. Since 1995 more than 17,000 college– aged students, public school
teachers and juvenile detention personnel have come to CDF–Alex Haley Farm for training to teach in summer Freedom Schools. Many have gone on to become teachers, principals, administrators, college professors and more. They are filling a great need. Secretary of Education John B. King, Jr., was among the extraordinary leaders who spoke to and inspired them this year. As our first Puerto Rican-African American Secretary of Education he spoke movingly of losing his mother at 8 and his father at 12 and how caring teachers saved his life and put him on the path to success. He graduated from Harvard University, Columbia University’s Teachers College, and Yale Law School. He stressed the crucial importance of build-

ing a strong multiracial and multicultural teacher pipeline to inspire and guide all of our children — especially those who are poor and non–White. Students of color constitute a majority in our schools but teachers of color constitute only 18 percent of their faculties. Unless we are able to encourage many more talented students and teachers of color to enter and stay in the profession, this “mismatch” will only get worse. In a Washington Post Op–Ed Secretary King noted, “We have strong evidence that students of color benefit from having teachers who are positive role models, as well as from the changes in classroom dynamics that result. Teachers of color often have higher expectations for students of color, are more likely to use culturally relevant teaching practices, are more likely to confront racism in their lessons and, yes, also serve as advocates.” On May 6, 2016, Secretary King and the U.S. Department of Education held a National Summit on Teacher Diversity where education leaders, researchers, policymakers, teachers, and students spoke about the value of a diverse teaching force. Researchers noted that Black and Hispanic children in schools with high concentrations of Black and Hispanic teachers are less likely to be suspended, more likely to be recognized as better students and be placed in academically gifted classes, and more likely to graduate on time than those who attend schools with fewer diverse teachers. Teachers and students shared personal examples of how having shared experiences could bolster child self-esteem and performance. Jahana Hayes, the National Teacher of the Year from Waterbury, Connecticut, grew up in poverty and became the first in her family to finish college and graduate school. She said her challenges ensured she will never give up on a student: “People often give up at the point students need them the most.” Teachers of color are underrepresented compared to students of color in every state and a report released at the Summit by the Department of Education showed how the supply of teachers of color decreases at multiple points in the educator pipeline including enrollment in and completion of education programs, initial hiring,
and retention. Seventy-eight percent of new teachers are White compared to 8 percent Black and 10 percent Hispanic. Only 2 percent of teachers are Black males. A strong case and call was made for getting students of color into the teacher pipeline, moving them through, and keeping them once they are in a school. The report noted that closing the completion rate between White and Black education majors could add another 300 Black bachelor’s degree completions for every 1,000 Black aspiring teachers. Secretary King pointed out the “invisible tax” paid by teachers of color, especially males — often given extra tasks like planning cultural activities or mentoring or disciplining students of color. Adding these roles on top of standard responsibilities without extra support can lead to teacher burnout. Recent research by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) found more teachers of color are being hired than in the past but they are leaving more quickly than White teachers. Making the educator workforce much more diverse would help everyone. Secretary King emphasized a more diverse workforce would be good not just for students of color but for all students: “It’s also important for our White students to see teachers of color in leadership roles in their classrooms and communities. Breaking down negative stereotypes helps all students learn to live and work in a multiracial society. Ultimately, the work we can do together to create opportunity for all students will determine not only the kind of economy we have and the kind of people we will be, but also whether we will become the nation we ought to be.” I could not agree more. Celebration of Fatherhood (Part 3) “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.” - Psalm 103:13 All month this column has been sharing articles from fathers in response to: “What Have Been Your Greatest Joys of Fatherhood?” This week enjoy the wonderful piece submitted by Pastor Kevin A. Kearney, Sr. What have been my greatest joys of fatherhood? For me, the joys of fatherhood are many! Some may look at this privilege as a challenge, and I must honestly admit, in today’s society filled with its societal ills, it can be. But the book of Proverbs has provided me with insight and wisdom, as to how best communicate with my sons (Jaylen, 19, and Kevin Jr., 10), and step-daughters (Shaunique, 23, and Shaukeria, 19), therefore, I’ve taken great pleasure in my privilege of being a father. Proverbs 3:5-6 reads, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own un-
derstanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (ESV) And honestly, that’s a principle that I’ve applied to all areas of my life, including Fatherhood. And beyond my “Trust in the Lord,” there’s another principle that I’ve tried to teach my sons (Jaylen and Kevin Jr.) in particular; and it’s found in Proverbs 4:1-2 “Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching.” (ESV) These are foundational truths that every child, young men in par-
ticular, need to hear. Jaylen, who was my first born son, was always inquisitive. And me, being a Baptist minister, there were often times when I would try to sneak away to study, or to simply read over some material. And Jaylen, because he knew where my study was located, in my small frame house there in Kansas City, MO, would often come to the door, and just peak in to see what I was doing. And perhaps that’s a guy thing, because I discovered years later, Kevin Jr. would do, and still does, the same thing.
They just wanted to know where I was, see what I was doing, and to know that everything was oaky. And to me, that was encouraging, young men (boys literally) caring about their father to see if I needed anything, and then allowing me the time needed to complete my studies. But outside these very early experiences with fatherhood, there were those times when I would participate in school activities, or find time to go on a field trip, or serve on a parent council or board, or even show up on the field for football, baseball, even basketball games and practices (even though sports are not my thing), and none of them were ever embarrassed or ashamed that their father, “the preacher” was actively involved in what was going on in their lives. For me, nothing can replace the joy of seeing the great delight that my boys get, whenever I show up for anything that they are involved in; not that I’ve been absent, but because they understand that ministry keeps me busy. Beyond the wisdom gained from the
Book of Proverbs, Ephesians 6:4 “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (KJV), has been a guiding text, to what I consider to be my fatherhood success! - Rev. MPS Board President Mark Sain, Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver issue statement regarding OSPP The following is a statement from Milwaukee Board of School Directors President Mark Sain and Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver regarding the Opportunity Schools and Partnership Plan (OSPP): To Our Milwaukee Public Schools Community, We truly appreciate your dedication, time and support to promote and encourage the success of Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) students and want to provide you with this update on the Opportunity Schools and Partnership Program (OSPP). In June 2015, the state legislature passed a law creating the OSPP, which gives Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele the responsibility to appoint a commissioner who has the authority to transfer an MPS school or schools from the district to the OSPP. On April 21, 2016, Commissioner Demond Means presented a proposal to MPS with a June 23 deadline for response. We appreciate the desire of County Executive Abele and Commissioner Means to develop a partnership proposal that attempts to limit harm to MPS students. However, as we have examined the OSPP proposal over the past six weeks, we

MPS Board President Mark Sain have identified the following concerns: • The academic and curricular programming lacks detail and clarity • The school funding plan is unclear • The school qualitative reviews outlined in both state law and the OSPP proposal have not been conducted • The request for proposals seeking a school operator was not issued and steps have not been taken to select a school • The OSPP proposal contains elements which contradict the legislation, namely that staff at the OSPP schools will remain employees of the district with little guidance about how this would be compliant with state law Given these concerns, we recently requested a meeting with County Executive Abele
and Commissioner Means to discuss an alternative to the OSPP proposal. We know the fundamental needs of our families include greater access to high-quality early childhood education, sustained resources and support, stable school communities, rigorous curriculum led by strong instructional leaders and having a voice in the decisions that impact their children. With these critical factors in mind, and given that the qualitative analysis as outlined in the OSPP proposal was not completed, selecting a school would be unfair to school communities because they have not had an opportunity to participate in a qualitative review. We have developed an alternative option that will add value and align with the critical work already underway at MPS: • Create a high-quality early childhood education program, addressing a community need acknowledged by local leaders and the Speaker’s Task Force on Urban Education • Provide the choice for families to opt-in to OSPP • Locate the program inside the former 35th Street Elementary School, which is well suited to serve our youngest learners; it would share a separate and distinct

Muhammad Ali’s death raises more awareness about Parkinson’s disease By Frederick H. Lowe Originally published in the June 13, 2016 print edition of The Louisiana Weekly newspaper Muhammad Ali, the late great world heavyweight boxing champion, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, is being praised by some in the medical community for raising public awareness about the debilitating disorder. But there are still unanswered questions about how prevalent disease is in the Black community because a complete study that meets scientific research standards has yet to be done, according to an article published by the National Medical Association. Ali a champ for bringing awareness of Parkinson’s disease Ali, 74, who died June 3 from septic shock, suffered from Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, for 32 years. Physicians diagnosed the three-time champion with Parkinson’s disease in 1984, three years after he retired. “We are saddened by the loss of Muhammad Ali, who faced Parkinson’s disease with great courage and tenacity. In making his diagnosis public, he provided hope for millions of others and helped the cause immeasurably. We celebrate his ex-

In all areas of life, he truly was ‘the Champ’ and ‘the greatest',” said Robin Elliott, president of the Parkinson Disease Foundation, which is based in New York. In 1997, Ali and his wife cofounded the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center in Phoenix, AZ, to provide comprehensive care for those living with disease. “The Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute mourns the loss of Muhammad Ali, whose generosity, courage, fighting spirit and dedication to helping others are the pillars of the Center,” officials said.
Other celebrities who are suffering or have suffered from Parkinson’s disease are actor Michael J. Fox and actor/comedian Robin Williams. Williams, 63, had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease three months before he committed suicide on Aug. 11, 2014. A debilitating disease with no cure The disease affects a person’s ability to walk and to speak. Symptoms include the loss of balance, trembling hands and slurred speech. Approximately one million people in the United States suffer from the disease, according to the Parkinson Disease Foundation. Men are more likely to suffer from Parkinson’s disease than women. There is no cure for
the disease. The Journal of the National Medical Association, an African American physicians group, published a study about the disease in a 2004 article, titled “Prevalence of Parkinson’s Disease in Populations of African Ancestry: A Review.” Researchers reviewed 20 studies. They included two door-to-door studies that relied on questionnaires. Another reviewed outpatient records of a large health maintenance organization and diagnosis of death certificates. “In the aggregate, these studies suggest Parkinson’s disease may be less frequent among African Americans than among Caucasians, although the well-designed study showed only a statistically insignificant reduction in the prevalence of Parkinson’s disease among African Americans,” the National Medical Association reported. “Although an apparently lower disease frequency among people of African origin may have a basis in the pathobiology of the disease, nearly all of the studies were vulnerable to a variety of ascertainment biases, and many lacked stringent applications of diagnostic criteria applied by specialists trained in movement disorders.” The article concluded that more study is needed to de-
termine if reported ethnic differences in disease prevalence are real. Although there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, physicians can help patients cope with the symptoms, according to the National Institutes of Health. A mystery disease, possibly caused by the environment What causes Parkinson’s disease is a mystery despite decades of research. “Many experts think the disease is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, which may vary from person to person,” according to the Parkinson Disease Foundation. “In some people genetic factors may play a role; in others, illness, an environmental toxin or other events may contribute to Parkinson’s disease. Scientists have identified aging as an important risk factor; there is a two to four percent risk for Parkinson’s disease among people over 50 compared with one to two percent in the general population.” Some researchers suggest Parkinson’s disease may be caused by exposure to environmental toxins, such as pesticides and well water.

Building a financial emergency kit for your family What would a sudden financial emergency be in your life? It could be a storm causing massive property damage to your home. It could also be something more personal, like an accident that would cut off your ability to make a living. Whatever it is, if someone else had to step in to help you in an emergency situation, it's important to have a plan in place so they know what to do. A financial emergency kit is a crucial component in financial planning. In short, a financial emergency kit involves identifying and planning for potential financial emergencies that could affect you and your loved ones. Building a successful one goes beyond sorting paperwork – it involves looking at a variety of potential situations in your life and then asking, "What's the worst that could happen?" You will want to create a kit – a set of physical or digital documents and instructions – that can help you or someone else you trust manage in a crisis. Here are some items you'll likely want to include:
1. Estate documents. Estate planning is really the highest form of financial emergency planning, because it addresses the ultimate personal financial emergencies – medical incapacitation or death. Would your family have easy access to this material if something happened to you? In your family financial emergency kit, estate documents would include copies of current wills (for you and your spouse or partner), your advanced directives (which instruct doctors on end-of-life or other stages in medical care), health/ financial powers of attorney (which designate specific individuals to step in to manage your money or health-
care if you cannot do so) as well as other documents that provide additional guidance for operating businesses and managing and distributing other assets you have. Make sure these documents are always current and that contact information is included for all the qualified experts you used to prepare them – estate or business attorneys, tax professionals and financial planners. 2. Insurance policies. Being able to find home and auto policies in a natural disaster is a no-brainer, but it's important to think a little more broadly. File as much policy and contact detail as you can for any health, disability, business, life and ac-

cident coverage you have – and remember that it's particularly important to note or file documentation on this coverage at work, too. Sometimes we sign up rather blindly for work-based benefits only to realize how important they may be in a financial emergency. 3. Tax materials. If a family member dies or becomes incapacitated, tax matters still need to be attended to. If you work with a tax professional, make sure their contact information is in the digital or physical kit (see indexes, contacts and guides, below), but it's also important to keep past returns and relevant supporting data based on your individual tax situation. 4. Investment, savings and retirement documents. If you work with a qualified financial planner or tax expert, you may have access to a particular system that lists and track this information in an organized way that many of us don't have at home. However you plan and track your investments, it should be included in your kit. 5. Indexes, contact sheets and guides. Some people need a little guidance, others need a lot. A family financial emergency kit needs to be usable by all designated family members. Put yourself in the role of a friend or family member who's been called in to help you in a crisis. If you had to step in to settle an estate, healthcare or disaster emergency for a friend or family member and
they weren't around to advise you, what information would you need to get started? In any category of information you include in a financial emergency kit, include a separate file or digital instruction that details people to call, account numbers if necessary, relevant online and physical addresses and other key data to advise that person about what's in front of them and what they should do. If you work with qualified financial experts, make sure their contact information is included. 6. Easy access to essentials under lock and key. If you're away from home when damage occurs or if family members need to access vehicles or other spaces, make sure you have keys and access codes locked safely in your emergency kit. You will also want to ensure that your emergency contacts have the necessary access to your emergency kit in order to retrieve these materials. You or loved ones might also need access to funds, particularly cash in an emergency. If you don't have a bank account established strictly for emergencies that allows specific family members to write checks or make cash withdrawals, you should consider it. Bottom line: Building a financial emergency kit requires some thinking, but it can help you avoid major losses and speed up decision making in a crisis. Work with people you trust to make it accessible and useful to your family and trusted individuals.

Apple Tortellini Salad
Servings: 6 to 8 Dressing: 3 tablespoons Tree Top Frozen Concentrate Apple Juice, thawed 3 tablespoons light corn syrup 2 teaspoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar 2 teaspoons garlic salt Ground pepper to taste Salad: 9 ounces cheese-filled tortellini 2 cups sliced apples (approximately 2 medium apples) 2 cups shredded salad greens 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries 1/2 cup thinly sliced celery 1/2 cup sliced scallions 2 tablespoons toasted pine nuts (optional) To prepare dressing, combine apple juice concentrate, corn syrup, brown sugar, vinegar, garlic salt and pepper. Cover dressing and refrigerate. To prepare salad, cook tortellini, drain and cool by rinsing pasta under cold water. Shake gently to drain thoroughly. In a large bowl, combine tortellini, apples, salad greens, strawberries, celery and scallions. Toss salad gently with chilled dressing. Serve chilled. If desired, sprinkle with pine nuts.
Spiced Pork and Apple Burger with Maple Dijon
Servings: 6 3 tablespoons maple syrup 2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard 2 pounds ground pork 1/2 cup Tree Top Natural Apple Sauce 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 6 hamburger buns Baby Spinach leaves Stir maple syrup and mustard together in a small bowl. Set aside. Spray a large non-stick grill pan or griddle with cooking spray and place over medium to medium high heat. Mix pork, apple sauce, salt, chili powder, dry mustard, pepper and cinnamon together in a large mixing bowl. Form mixture into 6 patties. Place patties in pan and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, turn and cook additional 4 to 5 minutes or until done. To serve, spread bun bottoms with maple mustard mixture. Top each with a patty, spinach leaf and bun top. If desired, toast buns and top with cheddar cheese, grilled onions, pickles, tomatoes or other favorite toppings. Serve with crispy sweet potato fries and steamed beans for an easy but special meal.

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Ice Pops
1 cup Tree Top Apple Juice 1 pint strawberries, hulled, sliced and frozen 1 banana, sliced and frozen 1 apple, peeled, cored, sliced and frozen 6 ounces vanilla yogurt 1 teaspoon vanilla Put all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. Pour into ice pop forms or paper cups. Place ice pop sticks in center and freeze, inverted, for 3 hours or until solid. Keep frozen until ready to serve.

Servings: 16 2 1/2 cups sifted flour 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup shortening 1 egg Milk 2/3 cup crushed corn flakes 1/2 cup Tree Top or Seneca Apple Sauce 5 cups sliced, peeled apples 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon Glaze: 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 2 tablespoons lemon juice Sift together flour, sugar and salt. Cut shortening in with pastry blender or two knives. Put egg yolk into measuring cup and add milk to make 2/3 cup. Add to shortening mixture. Mix just enough until dough shapes into a ball. Roll out half the dough into 15 x 11-inch rectangle. Transfer to baking sheet. Cover with corn flakes. Mix apple sauce together with apple slices, and add mixture on top of corn flakes. Mix sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over apple mixture. Roll out other half of dough for top crust. Place over apples. Pinch edges together. Beat egg white until stiff and spread on top crust. Bake in hot 400°F oven for 40 minutes. Cut into 16 squares. Combine confectioners’ sugar and lemon juice to make glaze. While hot, drizzle glaze over top.

SCHOOL OF ROCK Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10 School of Rock will host a “Battle of the Bands” competition for hundreds of their best students from across the world.
