Hayat Pharmacy presents Dr. Carter's Back-To-School Drive
On Saturday, August 27, 2016, Hayat Pharmacy hosted Dr. Carter's Back-to-School Drive at COA Goldin Center, 2320 W. Burleigh Street. During the celebration, Dr. Lester L. Carter, Jr., helped give out snacks and school supplies for kids in grades K5-12th. As part of the celebration Dr. Carter received awards from city hall, the Common Council and the Milwaukee Urban League. Local AT&T pioneers donate over 650 new backpacks to Milwaukee elementary school students
On Thursday, August 25, 2016, over 650 Milwaukee elementary school students received new backpacks filled with school supplies for the new school year, thanks to a donation from the Milwaukee area AT&T Pioneers. The AT&T Pioneers visited seven Milwaukee schools to donate the new backpacks and school supplies as part of their annual "Tools for Learning Project." Each year, the Pioneers work to raise money, purchase supplies, and stuff backpacks to help needy students start the school year full supplied and ready to learn. The schools which received donations this year were Marvin E. Pratt Elementary School, Elm Creative Arts School, Brown Street Academy, Clarke Street School, St. Aemilian, and Siloah Lutheran School. The AT&T Pioneers are a local organization of employees and retirees who volunteer their time to various community causes.

St. Ann Center honors outstanding youth volunteers Twenty-eight Milwaukee youth ages 11-15 were honored for their service to the community at the 7th Annual Gwen T. Jackson Award Banquet on August 18 at the St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care-Bucyrus Campus. The youth worked with older adults and people with disabilities in Milwaukee area senior centers and adult day programs, contributing nearly 800 hours to activities designed to promote compassion, respect for diversity, and a peaceful community. Local youth who successfully completed the “Buddy Program” received certificates, stipends and back-to-school backpacks as tokens of appreciation for their service at the banquet which is named in honor Gwen T. Jackson, a lifelong Milwaukee volunteer and community leader. For 13 years, the St. Ann’s Buddy Program has provided Milwaukee youth with the skills and Photo by St. Ann Center experience necessary to work with others who are different from them. Trump’s offensive appeals to communities of color backfire
Donald Trump States Senate in Louisiana, Duke recently released a campaign advertisement urging whites to vote for himself and Trump. Equally telling, a video released by the Hillary Clinton campaign includes video of a robed man identified as the Imperial Wizard of the Rebel Brigade Knights of the Ku Klux Klan telling a reporter, “The reason a lot of Klan members like Donald Trump is because a lot of what he believes, we believe in.” Trump, who believes himself to be the ultimate showman/salesman, thinks he can wash away the stain of his past and supporters with what he is saying now. Unfortunately, the language he uses and the manner in which he speaks about minority groups underscores how woefully out of touch he is with black and brown community members whose votes he seeks. Last weekend, the cousin of former Marquette and NBA star Dwyane Wade was shot and killed in Chicago while pushing a stroller. Another innocent bystander gunned down in a violent summer. As the news broke, Trump tweeted the following – “Dwayne (sic) Wade’s cousin was just shot

In the latest bizarre shift of his campaign strategy, Donald Trump has recently sought to portray himself as a champion of African Americans and Latinos. Trump began his awkward appeals at a campaign rally in Wisconsin recently, where he asked “for the vote of every African American citizen struggling in our country today.” Trump made his appeal to voters in front of an overwhelmingly white audience, in an overwhelmingly white community. Washington County, where he held the rally, has a black population of just 1.2 percent. If Trump were serious about addressing the challenges facing communities of color, there is no logical explanation for why he did not visit Milwaukee’s North or South sides. The location of the speech puts the lie to what he is selling. These overt appeals to African Americans for votes are undercut by Trump’s own history, the company he keeps, and the language he uses to appeal to African Americans and Latinos. Just this week, the New York Times published an in depth piece of reporting detailing Trump’s practice of turning away black residents from housing owned by the Trump family. The discriminatory practices used by Trump’s company led to a suit by the Department of Justice in 1973. Since announcing his campaign for the presidency, Donald Trump has been vocally supported by prominent members of the KKK, including former Grand Wizard David Duke. Currently running for the United

African-Americans will VOTE TRUMP!” It was just the latest stunning offensive comment from Trump; though equating the violent death of an African American to a reason to vote for someone like himself is shameful, it does not surprise. After all, this is the same candidate who said of Mexican immigrants, “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” Trump also attacked a Midwestern-born judge over his heritage, arguing he was not fit to conduct a trial concerning shady business dealings by Trump simply by virtue of his last name – which even Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan called the “textbook definition of racism.” There is no place in government, much less in the Oval Office, for a candidate with a history of racial discrimination in his business dealings. There is no explaining away such vocal support from white supremacists. And there can be no forgiving repeated use of such divisive language which casts people of color in such a negative light. Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson and other Republicans who support. Trump would do well to distance themselves from the policies, practices, and rhetoric of any such man. Unfortunately, they have not done so yet, and continue to support Trump’s candidacy. In the final weeks of this year’s campaign, voters must remember that whatever Trump says next, there is no escaping either his past or his present when it comes to how he treats and speaks about communities of color.

The Counseling Corner

In life, there are only a few things that are as rich, meaningful and important as a good marriage. In fact, when asked what they value most in determining the quality of their life, according to a study by Judith Wallerstein, she discovered that Americans rank marriage number 1 – ahead of friends, power, and even money. Anything that has that much value for good has just as much potential for pain. While this study suggests that a large number of couples value marriage, a large number of marriages still continue to fail. Something’s wrong here. The statistics just don’t seem to add up to the fact that Americans value marriage. You do the numbers. According to a research roughly 40-50 percent of first marriages will end in divorce. The divorce rate is even higher for subsequent marriages. Add another unknown number of couples who have separated and never divorce or who endure terrible marriages silently behind closed doors committed to staying together, but living in despair, misery and grief.
Marital forgiveness (Week 1)
In other words, for every 10 couples who get married maybe 2 or 3 of them will live ‘happily ever after.’ This now puts us between 2/3 and 3/4 of the population will experience some type of significant failure during their marriage. While this writer believe couples are truthful when they say they value marriage, perhaps the problem is what they wanted and what they got or what they helped to create is quite different than what they had planned. Perhaps your marriage has gone from being something wonderful to something far less than that. Maybe your marriage is in trouble due
to loss of hope, betrayals or disappointments. When marriages are in trouble, it hurts. The only ultimate solution for these hurts is pure and simple – forgiveness. The greater the offense, the more obvious is the need for forgiveness. Unless couples are able to eventually forgive each other, the marriage will never be anything but a hint of what it ought to be. In response to reader requests, this month this column will look at marital forgiveness. This column will not be suggesting that one simply wave a white flag offer of forgiveness for all past offenses and pronounce ‘all is well.’ Forgiveness is far
more complicated than that. Neither will this writer suggest that your feelings of sorrow, grief and anger are improper. They are natural and justifiable in certain situations. What’s not natural is forgiveness, which is exactly why it is so crucial. Forgiving someone for a horrendous breach of trust or for an offense that is especially egregious is something you may never feel like doing, but you must – and you can. He later joined Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop Sedgwick Daniels. Kevin graduated from Custer High School in 1980. Kevin worked as a certified nursing assistant for many years. He later was employed at Milwaukee Area Technical College as a food service assistant and later as a building service worker. In Florida, Kevin worked as a food service assistant for many establishments and later he was trained as a manager of environmental services. Kevin had a passion for taking care of the elderly. He loved singing, cooking and eating. Kevin leaves to cherish his memory his loving mother, Dr. Bobbie J. Lathan; his brother Wilbert Williams, Jr.; his father, Wilbert Williams, Sr.; grandmother, Eugenia Hicks; four aunts; Dorothy Laurence (his favorite aunt), Joyce Zollicoffer, Mattie Haywood and Della Griffin, all of Milwaukee, WI; three uncles; James (Ann) Hicks, Jr., Larry Hicks of Los Angeles, CA and Ronnie (Rosalinda) Hicks of Las Vegas, NV; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, including his favorite cousin, Christine Zollicoffer. On Thursday, August 25, 2016 about two dozen-Milwaukee area youth and program leaders came together at the Sojourner Family Peace Center for a peace conference titled, “Together We Can Do More” presented by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., founder of The White Privilege Institute and founder/ program director of the White Privilege Conference. During the conference Dr. Moore defined white privilege as the presumption of innocence in the circumstances where people are judged without complete information about their character. “It is a system that existed before any of us were born and continues still,” he said. Dr. Moore shared with youth and community residents how to take action against hatred, bigotry, privilege and systematic oppression. He also gave them insight on how to challenge their own biases, behaviors, and systems.

On Wednesday, August 24, 2016 the YMCA of Milwaukee celebrated the 35th Anniversary of the YMCA Black Achievers, with a breakfast program at the Italian Conference Center, 631 East Chicago St. The YMCA Black Achievers is a cooperative venture that marshals the resources of home, school, corporate communities and the YMCA to help youth set and attain high education and career goals. The breakfast event honored some of the program participants who have met or exceeded their education goals this year; as well as honoring a number of African American professionals from the Milwaukee community who have served as mentors and role models over the years. Business leader Lamarr Franklin was honored for creating channels for community involvement in collaboration with business and industry. The seat belt usage rate in Milwaukee lags behind the rest of Wisconsin. That’s why Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Donald Driver, paid a recent visit to Gee’s Clippers in Milwaukee. Driver wanted to personally get the word out to customers at the barber shop that wearing seat belts saves lives and that you can get a ticket for not wearing one. Only a few of the customers that Driver surprised said they don’t wear their seat belts. But, after their encounter with Donald and having him buckle them in to the barber chair, chances are they do now! So, take it from a Driver who always wears his seat belt, every trip, every time; CLICK IT OR TICKET!

The top five back-to-school tips for college success The summer has just flown by, and school will be back in session before you know it. You may think that what you do in the beginning of the term isn’t that important, but nothing could be further from the truth! A lot of your future success this year will be determined by how you handle the first few weeks of school. Here are five ways to guarantee that this is the start of an A+ semester: 1. Choose your courses carefully. Some colleges have what’s known as a “shopping period,” in which students can add and drop courses to their hearts’ content. If you have this opportunity, being a smart shopper can set you up for success. In the first week of school, try sitting in on a number of classes that you’re interested in and qualified for. Getting a sense of the workload and the professor’s teaching style for each class will help you make an informed decision when it comes time to finalize your
schedule. By choosing the courses that are best for you, you’ll maximize your GPA at the end of the term. 2. Treasure your syllabi. When you get the syllabi for your classes, don’t just toss them into your backpack and never look at them again. Treat them as your guide to getting an A. As soon as you get them, make a master schedule with all the deadlines and assignments you’ll have for the rest of the term. You can do this by using a regular calendar or day planner, or a
more high-tech tool such as Google Calendar or iStudiez Pro—whatever you’re most comfortable with. See when your crunch times are and set alerts for when you have to start key projects. You should also reread your syllabi often, as they may contain the teachers’ expectations, guidelines for writing papers, clues about exams, and other tips that will come in handy throughout the semester. 3. Start studying as soon as possible. Lots of students view the
beginning of the semester as an opportunity for slacking off. There isn’t much homework yet, the first test seems far away, and they’re still in a post-summer haze. But this is actually the perfect time to get a leg up on your studies. Keep up with all your assignments and, if possible, read ahead. The more you get done now, the easier it’ll be to keep your head above water when the work starts pouring in. 4. Make connections from day one. The first day of class can be pretty nerve-wracking, but it’s also the best time to forge new relationships. Everyone is in the same boat, and students haven’t yet pigeonholed themselves into groups or cliques. It’s easy to make friends in the beginning of the year: just lean over and introduce yourself; the other person will probably be happy you’ve broken the ice. Having people you can depend on in class is important for a number of reasons.
When you’re absent, you can get class assignments and notes that you missed. You can study for tests together—explaining a concept to somebody else is one of the best ways to learn. And of course, having a friend in the seat next to you makes going to class much more enjoyable! 5. Establish healthy habits. This is the perfect time to develop smart strategies for sleep, diet, and exercise. If you forge these habits now, before you get distracted by tests and assignments, you’ll be more likely to stick with them in the long run. Try to get at least eight hours of sleep a night, and keep a regular bedtime even on the weekends. Set up a schedule for exercising at least three times a week. And get in the habit of eating well, not skipping meals, and packing healthy snacks to eat on campus. Remember: your brain can’t function at full capacity unless you treat your body right!
Nine back-to-school tips to help parents bridge the chasm between home and classroom
From emailing the teacher to volunteering in the classroom, experts at National Louis University offer ideas to help your child make a smooth transition. By Eric Schulzke Whether it's coming back after a long summer or starting kindergarten or preschool, children are often full of school-driven angst at the end of August. To help out, the education faculty at National Louis University (NLU), a nonprofit founded in 1886 with seven locations in Illinois, Florida and Wisconsin, put together nine suggestions for parents to minimize stress in the first weeks of school and the months that follow.

ings to get crazy. Don't let your child be the one who's late to school because he couldn't find his shoes. Instead, minimize chaos by having a place for each child to put his or her things, including the backpack. Get kids to sleep early enough so they have time in the morning to eat breakfast without rushing. "Younger children need 9 to 11 hours of sleep due to the increasing demands on their time from school, sports and extracurricular activities," says Ayn Keneman, associate professor of education at NLU. "It takes energy to remember what you learned." 3. Tackle not wanting to go Getting to the heart of the child's reluctance to go to school is key in hard cases, says Leslie Katch, assistant professor of education at NLU. Find out what the child is worried about, whether it be bullies, sitting alone at lunch, the academic work, or just not wanting summer to end. "Asking questions can reveal important intel into the feelings and emotions around going back to school," she says. "If you can pinpoint an issue, talking through the problem and acknowledging your child's concerns can help provide the confidence needed to enter the first day of school." (Continued on pg. 12)

Bridging the chasm (Continued from pg. 11) 4. Role play with younger children Role playing is especially key for young children, Katch says. Helping kids anticipate routines will help everything seem less scary. Start with the first day of school. "You will have your backpack, we will put it in your cubby, and then mommy will kiss you goodbye." Katch also suggests useful reassuring mantras: "Mommy always comes back after we eat lunch." 5. Take turns reading Routinely reading together makes literacy work at school feel less foreign, Imam says. Pick out a book and read a paragraph, then let your child read a paragraph, and take turns. Kids seeing parents reading and responding to books brought from school helps establish their importance, Imam says. Your child also gets the practice of encountering unfamiliar words and learning them, plus the bonus of doing something with you. 6. Reduce anxiety Anxiety is normal for a child starting school, says Jennifer Cooper, assistant professor in NLU's School Psychology program. Dialogue, coping techniques and realistic goals can all help. "Parents and other caregivers can teach their children simple strategies to help with anxiety, such as organizing materials and time, developing short scripts of what to do and say when anxiety increases, and learning coping strategies to relax under

stressful conditions," Cooper says. She also recommends parents and caregivers look for warning signs, including excessive worrying, health problems, irritability, difficulty concentrating, change in sleeping patterns and get qualified professional help if the problem persists or deepens. 7. Volunteer at your child's school Volunteering is a great way to bridge school and home, Imam says, helping your child sense your connection to his or her school. Having mom and dad be a part of the classroom reduces the strangeness of the new experience, Imam says. Even if parents work during the day, Imam says, there are valuable contributions they can make, such as preparing materials for bulletin boards or helping with evening or weekend events. Email your teacher to find out what you can do to help. 8. Reconnect with friends With summer activities and travel, children can lose touch with the friends that they made during the school year. Seeing a friend can make children more comfortable, so schedule a playdate with a few friends before school starts. "Going back to school is stressful for children of all ages, so reconnecting with friends is a great way to help reduce a child's anxiety for the upcoming school year, " says Keneman. 9. Talk with your children daily With both children and parents much busier than previous generations, Imam says it is critical to have structured time when the child can recount their day with the parent. After a long summer break, it's time for the kids to head back to school and focus on classes, sports and other after-school activities. But as you get adjusted to the first month of school, it's a good idea to take a couple of precautionary measures to set them up for a safe, healthy year. Here are the top five back-to-school health tips to consider. 1. Get vaccinated You, your partner and your children should all get vaccinated as early as possible in the school year. Many schools require certain vaccinations before children can enroll. Talk to your children's health care provider and your doctor to find out which ones are recommended, and consider getting the flu vaccine, too. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older. 2. Set bedtimes It's essential for kids (and adults!) to get a healthy amount of sleep each night to stay focused throughout the day. Although sleep requirements vary somewhat among individuals, most adults need about eight hours of sleep each night, and children and adolescents typically need more than eight hours. To get your kids ready to wake up earlier for school, consider making their bedtimes a little earlier each night for a week or two before school starts. Sticking to a routine is important too, so don’t let weekends become late-night free-for-alls.

Make it easier for yourself by stocking up on healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, wholegrain bread and lean protein like turkey. Take a few minutes during the weekend to cut up fruits and vegetables and prepare things like tuna salad or hard-boiled eggs for convenience in the mornings, and buy plenty of containers for nutritious dinner leftovers. Consider getting a small ice pack and an insulated lunch bag to allow more variety.
