Vel Phillips receives Lifetime Achievement Unity Award from Milwaukee Urban League

On Thursday, December 4, 2014, The Milwaukee Urban League and Time Warner Cable presented the Lifetime Achievement Unity Award to Milwaukee's own civil rights icon, Vel R. Phillips. The event took place in a ceremony at the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. During her outstanding career of public service, Vel achieved many "firsts." She was the first African American and the first woman elected to the City of Milwaukee Common Council, where she was a strong advocate for women and minority issues. She was the first woman and the first African American appointed as a judge in the state. In 1978, Vel made history again by being elected the first woman and first African American Secretary of State in Wisconsin. Pictured at the event (top left photo, from left) Milwaukee Urban League president and C.E.O Ralph Hollmon; and Vel Phillips; Time Warner Cable Sr. Community Investment Director Marci Pelzer; AT&T governmental affairs director Dextra Hadnot with other AT&T employees (bottom left photo); and Johnson Controls foundation affairs & global community relations vice president Mary Dowell (top photo right), with Johnson Controls associates.

Kohl's® delivers gifts and holiday cheer to Penfield's Children's Center

Photos by Kohl's

Fifteen Kohl’s associates delivered truckloads of nearly 1,000 wrapped holiday gifts for children enrolled at Penfield Children’s Center on Friday, December 5, 2014. The gifts, donated by Kohl’s associates, were handed out on Saturday during Penfield’s annual holiday party. More than 90 percent of the children served by Penfield Children’s Center live at or below the federal poverty level and these gifts may be the only gifts they receive this holiday season. For the past several years, Kohl’s associates have generously purchased holiday gifts for children at Penfield Children’s Center. In ad-

dition to the gifts, Kohl’s will donate $25,000 to support programming at Penfield. Since 2000, Kohl’s and Kohl’s Cares have committed more than $8 million to Penfield Children’s Center for their mission and to create, support and expand the Kohl’s Building Blocks Program, which helps young children with behavioral problems and children with significant disabilities by providing access to specialized educational and developmental services and equipment through Penfield.

A Musical Celebration of the Best Christmas Ever

Finding a way forward

A lot of people did not see this coming... a new and younger generation rising and picking up the cause of free speech and active protest in the wake of so many things going awry. Today more and more people are letting their voices be heard and marching for various causes. Some of the things that have people upset are the ongoing and endless debate about immigration, voter suppression tactics, minimum wage increases, equal pay for equal work, affordable housing and now community policing. The recent series of shootings by police, a choke hold and the use of deadly force that was caught on camera is sounding the alarm. And to make matters worse, no criminal indictments were issued. This new generation is not going to stand around and take this without people and a system being held accountable. They see a system that is broken; police militarization and a growing culture of indifference among those who are sworn to protect and serve

the communities of color. These recent events have exposed the underlying reality of what prejudice looks and feels like, especially towards Blacks and people of color in general; Black men and boys in particular. I know we have our own issues of Black on Black crime and that needs to be addressed as well. But the treatment by those in law enforcement and being paid to do so should be better and needs to improve. Many of us know that policing is a tough job and there are times in which things can get lost in the fog of situations, reactions and emotions. To be fair, our community needs effective policing, but there are limits to everything. Additionally, these recent events have uncovered that a number of rules of law and processes

have become outdated and additional training standards need to be put into place that reflect good bearing, discipline and multiculturalism. However, I see those issues as well as other issues connected to a number of failures in our society, and we need to work on them, too. There is a need to improve our community with better paying jobs, reduce homelessness, more affordable housing and reducing the high levels of poverty. And perhaps we will see a lesser need for expanded policing. What do you think? Dr. Andrew Calhoun, can be contacted at andrewiiicalhoun@ gmail.com, Twitter #AC53, Facebook, or call 414-571-5015. You can hear Dr. Calhoun each Sunday at Grace Fellowship Church, 3879 N. Port Washington Rd. Milwaukee 414-2655546.

What’s Happening?

Happy Birthday and congratulations on your 80th Birthday, Rev. McFarland! The congregation of True Heart Baptist Church, 4300 W. Villard Ave., had a surprised birthday celebration for their beloved pastor, Rev. Robert McFarland, who observed his 80th birthday on Sunday, November 30, 2014. Pastor McFarland has been preaching for 49 years and 40 of those years as pastor of True Heart. When asked to comment on the birthday celebration, Pastor McFarland said: “I was very surprised to see so many guests.” He went on to express his admiration and love for members of the congregation. Guest pastors present for the celebration included: Pastor Ellis Wilkins of Damascus Baptist Church, Pastor Donnie Sims of Jerusalem Baptist Church, Rev. Andrew Morgan of Rock Hill Baptist Church, and Pastor Kurt Boyd of The Way of the Cross Baptist Church, along with other ministers. Pastor McFarland (2nd from left) is pictured receiving a basket filled with congratulatory cards and well wishes. After the birthday celebration, Rev. McFarland, members of the congregation and invited guest retired to the fellowship hall and enjoyed a meal fit for royalty. Staff Photo

Bulletin Board Siefert "fires up" their feet

Siefert Elementary School received a "Walking Award" and grant this fall for participating in the fall "Fire Up Your Feet" challenge. "Fire Up Your Feet" is a national campaign designed to encourage students to be active. It "encourages families, students and schools to work together and create active lifestyles which inspire all children to be healthy and physically active." Students, staff and parents from Siefert School tracked their activity minutes for the entire month of October. Activities ranged from gym, outside recess, walking to school, afterschool sports and personal workouts. Schools across Wisconsin submitted their activity minutes to be eligible for awards of $200-$1,000 in a variety of MPS Photo categories. Siefert's program received a check for $300. Seifert has a daily walking club that encourages students to track their laps and miles on the playground during recess time. In the spring, the school will culminate the program with their 2nd Annual Walk-A-Thon.

Washington HS of IT nets 2nd grant to connect students to mobile app development One month after MPS’ Washington High School of Information Technology was named one of only 10 U.S. schools to be part of a new mobile application development program, the school has won a new $20,000 Verizon grant to further connect students to the growing world of mobile applications. Washington will use the Verizon Innovate Learning grant in partnership with Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG)-Milwaukee to give students the opportunity to participate in the “Next Big Thing,” a hands-on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning project. A team of students will develop a mobile application solution for an industry of its choice and then present its apps at a STEM career development conference, teaching them valuable entrepreneurship and marketing skills as well as IT skills. And as Computer Science Education Week begins December 8, it’s worth noting that the “Next Big Thing” experience includes learning code as well as visiting colleges, career coaching and employer visits to keep students engaged in STEM learning and exposed to STEM career options. “We are continuing to grow our IT and STEM of-

ferings at Washington as we work to ensure all students are college and career ready,” Washington Principal Tonya Adair said. The school offers a National Academy Foundation Information Technology Academy that includes seven IT courses, along with NAF academies in engineering and hospitality/tourism. In November, the school was selected as one of only 10 in the U.S. to be a part of the Lenovo Scholar Network, a mobile application development program aimed at empowering the next generation of developers and entrepreneurs. The Lenovo Scholar Network is a partnership that includes Lenovo, NAF and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). “I want to thank Verizon for its generous contribution to the STEM component of the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program. Verizon’s Innovative Learning grant will give MPS students a unique opportunity to apply these core competencies as they learn to develop and market mobile applications,” said Earl Buford, president and CEO of the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board, which administers JAG-Milwaukee. “This investment in our young people is an investment in the future.”

Organ donor says: “Third time's the charm”

Although Kelvin Martin (pictured right) was diagnosed three times with congestive heart failure, he didn’t believe the doctors because he was still a very active 25-year-old. How could he have a medical condition that he didn’t think African Americans, especially young African Americans, could have when he was still able to run and do all the things he was able to do before? But the seriousness of the condition became more clear to Martin, who is now 35, as he had three heart attacks after his diagnosis and lived for nearly three years on a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), before receiving a heart transplant in January. Martin said he lacked

knowledge about heart disease, and didn’t start learning about transplantation and organ donation until he was introduced to Gift of Hope, a nonprofit organ procurement organization that coordinates organ and tissue donation and provides donor family services and public education in Illinois and Northwest Indiana. “If someone explained to me you’re going to feel good right now but as you move

around more, you’re going to get to this point…I would have [understood] if it was explained to me in detail,” said Martin. The husband and father of a 5-year-old son now understands and educates others, including his fam-

ily members, about heart disease and the importance of organ donation. And he will help tell “The Never-Ending Story” of donation by joining 29 other people from across the country to ride on the Donate Life Rose Parade Float in the 2015 Tournament of Rose Parade, which will feature floral floats, marching bands and equestrian units, leading up to the Rose Bowl college football game, held in Pasadena, CA on New Year’s Day. Organ donation is very important “because you don’t know when you’ll be in that situation or a family member in that situation,” said Martin, who said he’s very grateful to even have been select-

ed to be on the Donate Life float in the Rose Parade. Like Martin was, a lot of African Americans are in need of organ donation and transplantation, but even fewer are giving. While African Americans make up 29 percent of the more than 100,000 patients on the national organ transplant waiting list, they account for 14 percent of all organ donors, according to data from Gift of Hope. Historically African Americans have had a mistrust of the medical community based on experience or reliable information, such as the “Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male,” where Black men were misled and never given adequate treatment for their illness during the study conducted between 1932 and 1972.

Robert Pyles, Owner/Operator of a McDonald’s Restaurant of Southeastern Wisconsin congratulates

STEPHEN JOHNSON, SUPERVISOR EXCEPTIONAL EMPLOYEE

In 1989, Stephen began his career at a Milwaukee McDonald’s. He started as a crew team member and by 1991 he was already working in management. Throughout his 20+ years with McDonald’s Restaurants of Southeastern Wisconsin, Stephen has climbed the ladder. From swing manager, salary manager and restaurant manager, all the way up to supervisor, he has demonstrated that hard work pays off. Stephen says that Milwaukee McDonald’s restaurants are a great place to work because, “they offer great career opportunities. You can become an operator, work on the marketing team, help with construction projects – there are so many different fields to grow into, any field that interests you.” Stephen says his favorite part about his job is working with people and watching them grow into leaders. As a person who has truly grown in the Pyles organization, Stephen likes to mentor younger generations and encourage them to set high goals for themselves. Outside of work, Stephen is an active member at his church, Abundant Faith Church of Integrity, and for the past 17 years he has refereed high school and college basketball. Stephen is a Milwaukee native. He graduated from Solomon Juneau High School in 1982 and served in the Army Reserves for nine years. Stephen is married with six children, and 12 grandchildren.

Holiday shopping guide 2014: Best books for Christmas gifts Every year, your gift list gets longer. Some of the newbies on your list are also new to the family. Some are friends to whom you’ve grown close. There’s that neighbor who’s so awesome, the new supervisor at work, an uncle who’s visiting this year, your child’s new teacher, and a Secret Santa program you’ve joined. And usually, you’re able to keep up with your list and know exactly what to give… but then there’s that one person who’s so hard to shop for. Why not give a book? Books never run out of batteries, they don’t have to be turned off before bedtime, and they’re totally caloriefree. Take a look at these suggestions… Fiction If historical fiction is of great interest to someone on your gift list, then look for “Desert God” by Wilbur Smith. This novel, set in ancient Egypt, includes a hero who is very close to the Pharaoh… almost too close. Magic, love, war – what else could your giftee want? The Neil Gaiman fan on your list is in luck this year: first, “The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains,” illustrated by Eddie Campbell is a novel with aspects of graphic novels and the flair that Gaiman fans relish. And your giftee will know that this years’ best gift came from you when you wrap it up with “The Art of Neil Gaiman” by Hayley Campbell, foreword by Audrey Niffenegger, a book filled with notes, artwork, poetry, reflections, and more from The Master. Western lovers will love reading “The Ploughmen” by Kim Zupan, a story of a green lawman and the older jailed killer he’s tasked with watching. Set in the Old West, this book is laced with a tautness that modern readers will love. Wrap it up with “Painted Horses” by Malcolm Brooks, a novel with a modern setting and a romantic spin. For the suspense fan who loves a little ghost story, too, how about “Haunted” by Randy Wayne White? This suspense novel features White’s newest character, Hannah Smith, who is tasked with saving a supposedly haunted house. But is the rumor of a ghost worse than the reality of a murderous flesh-andblood human? Wrap it up with “Remains of Innocence” by J.A. Jance, a suspenseful novel about a dying woman and her money, a dead man and a scandal, and the sheriff who

must solve both terrible cases. The thriller fan on your list will love “Mercy 6” by David Bajo, a novel about a mystery disease that’s killing people in a California hospital – or is it? Are the patients dying of illness or something else? Grab this one, and toss “Bones Never Lie” by Kathy Reichs, in the bag, too. It’s a novel of suspense featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. If you’ve got someone on your gift list who’s itching to start all over, preferably as someone else, then “How to Build a Girl” by Caitlin Moran could be the just-right gift. This sassy novel is about a teenager who tries to reinvent herself but, of course, things like that don’t always work so well… You may have a visitor to Mitford on your gift list this year, and there’s no doubt that she misses her favorite town and her favorite pastor – so “Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good” by Jan Karon is a sure-fire gift. In this book, Father Tim returns to Mitford with his wife and family after a five-year absence, only to find that some things change – and not just a little. For the reader who loves faction (fact + fiction), you’ll want to find “The True and Splendid History of the Harristown Sisters” by Michelle Lovric. Based on a real family of sisters who grew their hair long (LONG!!) and performed in public, this book imagines their relationships with one another, the jealousy, and the scandal. For the parent on your list – particularly for the parent of a picky toddler – wrap up “You Have to F**king Eat” by Adam Mansbach, illustrated by Owen Brozman. It’s the follow-up to the sleep book from a few years ago, the one that made parents hysterical with laughter. Be aware – I can’t stress this enough – that this book has profanity, so it’s NOT for kids but it IS for folks with a great sense of humor. GENERAL NON-FICTION There is absolutely no trivia fan in the world who could be without “1,339 Quite Interesting Facts to Make Your Jaw Drop” by John Lloyd, John Mitchinson, and James Harkin. This totally fun book is filled with I-didn’t-know-that facts that practically beg to be read aloud. It’s the kind of book you want to take on the ride to Grandma’s this

holiday, so you can share it on the road. If there’s someone on your gift list who likes to poke the bear and stir up trouble, then “Villains, Scoundrels, and Rogues” by Paul Martin may be the right thing to wrap. This book is filled with short chapters on all kinds of reallife troublemakers and shady citizens. How fun is that? Wrap it up with “Madam Belle: Sex, Money, and Influence in a Southern Brothel” by MaryJean Wall, for an even more rascally gift. The person on your list who lives by the motto “I (Heart) NY” will absolutely swoon over “A History of New York in 101 Objects” by Sam Roberts. This book is a love story to The Big Apple, complete with pictures, stories, and tiny little things that make NYC so FUN. Wrap it up with “Confessions of a New York Taxi Driver” by Eugene Salomon, a name-dropping, jaw-dropping collection of memories of fares, no-fairs, stars, scandalous behavior, and tourists. Who could miss that? Your card shark will find Lady Luck smiling when he (or she!) opens “Blood Aces: The Wild Ride of Benny Binion, The Texas Gangster Who Created Vegas Poker” by Doug J. Swanson. This is a book to prove that what happens in Vegas doesn’t necessarily stay in Vegas – and that’s a good thing. What makes a good love last? Someone on your gift list wonders that same thing, and in “Love Cycles” by Linda Carroll, she (or he!) will find the answer. Wrap it up with two tickets to anywhere, and wish the happy couple well. The gardener on your list is going to go wild for “A Garden of Marvels” by Ruth Kassinger. This is a book about the secret lives of plants: what they eat, how they mate, and how they grow. Wrap it up with a trowel and a few packages of seeds, for a nice promise-of-spring gift. For the person on your list who seems to be Google’s

biggest user, “Curious: The Desire to Know and Why Your Future Depends On It” by Ian Leslie could be just right to give. This book proves that curiosity isn’t at an all-time high, like you might think; in fact, it’s on the wane and that’s bad. For the musician or lover of classical music, “The Late Starters Orchestra” by Ari L. Goldman will be a nice surprise this holiday. It’s the story of a group of amateur musicians of all ages who get together once a week to do something that makes their hearts soar – and it’ll put a song in the heart of your giftee. The outdoorsman on your list doesn’t need another pair of hand warmers or wool socks – so wrap up “The Three-Minute Outdoorsman” by Robert M. Zink instead. This book is full of short, just-afew-pages essays on hunting,

fishing, and nature, and (believe it or not) science. He (or SHE!) is going to love this book. For the True Crime aficionado, “Death Dealer: How Cops and Cadaver Dogs Brought a killer to Justice” by Kate Clark Flora might be the most thrilling gift she opens this year. It’s the story of a missing woman, murder, and the cooperation between law enforcement departments in two countries. Your connoisseur of cocktails will love opening “Bourbon: A History of the American Spirit” by Dane Huckelbridge. This book takes a look at this drink that’s older than you think, and uniquely American. Pair it up with a couple of good glasses and “Moonshine Nation” by Mark Spivak. It’s a history of the spirit, and your giftee will absolutely love that it contains partyworthy recipes! (Continued next week)
