Reid's New Golden Gate Funeral Home hosts annual 'Celebration of Love'

Photos by George Bryant

Arthur and Mary Reid, founders and owners of Reid’s New Golden Gate Funeral Homes, held their Annual Christmas Dinner Celebration on Friday, December 12, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza located on South 13th Street. Family members, friends, pastors and church leaders from Chicago, Racine and Milwaukee were in attendance to salute and celebrate the prominent couple in grand style. The evening affair featured an eight course buffet dinner, and a uplifting gospel message by Rev. Dr. Demetrius K. Williams of Community Baptist Church, in Milwaukee, WI. The Reids acknowledged the business support they have received from the religious community. The Reids have three funeral home locations, two on Milwaukee's northwest side and a location in Racine. Pictured at the event are the staff of Reid's New Golden Gate Funeral Home (upper left photo); Mrs. Mary Smith-Reid, Ruby Jackson, and Josephine Hill (upper right photo); and president and C.E.O. Mr. Arthur Reid with guests.

Mentors and protégés enjoy night out The name Andre Lee Ellis is usually associated with theatrical productions. However, the gifted actor, playwright and producer also devotes considerable time to helping to produce young men with purpose and goals on their minds through his "We Got This" grassroots mentoring program for young African American males in the neighborhood where he lives, around North 9th Street and West Ring Avenue. On Saturday, December 13, 2014, 50 program participants along with their adult mentors donned tuxedoes and boutonnieres, put their best feet forward and enjoyed a night out on the town. They dined at Carson's Prime Steak and Famous Barbecue restaurant in downtown Milwaukee, shared some one-on-one time, and got a bit of coaching in etiquette. Ellis (pictured with raised hand) began "We Got This" in the spring as an informal neighborhood clean-up and gardening project. It has since attracted nearly 100 youth plus male mentors who donate both time and money to help the youth succeed. Photo by Robert Bell

Milwaukee Urban League Guild hosts 4th Annual Chili Taste Fundraiser The Milwaukee Urban League Guild hosted its 4th Annual Chili Taste Fundraiser on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Gene's Lanes. The event raised over $1,300! The funds will go toward helping the Urban League purchase laptop computers for deserving students. The event would have not been such a success if it was not for the hard work of committee chairman Ingrid Jackson, all of the chili chefs, the volunteers who participated, and all of the Guild members who sold tickets for the event and/or donated bottles of wine for the raffle. Also at the event are president LeVarn Clay, vice president Marie H. Britt-Sharpe, treasurer Bobbie Webber, and secretary ReDonna S. Rodgers.

Statement from Milwaukee Urban League president on deaths of unarmed Black men after encounters with police By Ralph Hollmon, President & C.E.O. The Milwaukee Urban League On Sunday, December 14, 2014, I attended a peaceful rally in Red Arrow Park to support a call for justice in the death of Dontre Hamilton and to show support for the Hamilton family. I also joined with others to urge District Attorney John Chisholm to make his decision regarding police officer Christopher Manney as soon as possible. It was stressed that we all want a thorough review of the facts in this case, but it has been seven months since Mr. Hamilton's

death and the longer the decision is delayed, it leads to speculation and more distrust of our criminal justice system. Sunday's rally in Red Arrow Park also coincided with a National Day of rallies in Washington, D.C., and other cities across the U.S. to show support for the families of other unarmed black males who have been killed in 2014 after encounters with police: Tamir Rice, Cleveland, OH; Akai Gurley, Brooklyn, NY; Ralph Hollmon Michael Brown, Ferguson, MO; and Eric Garner, Staten Island, NY. The tragic unac- cers must stop and we need ceptable deaths of unarmed to do everything possible to Black males by police offi- make that happen.

Currently, there are parts of our community that do not trust the police because they feel there is, and has been, a pattern of excessive force against Black males. It is crucial that we work to restore trust because we need each other. The community needs the police to protect and serve, and the police need the community to help prevent and solve crimes. However, trust can not be restored if we continue to have Black males killed under questionable circumstances by police officers. Trust can not be achieved without a change in the way Black males are perceived

and treated. Change starts with training and a number of things can and should be done in regards to training, especially as it relates to handling citizens with mental health issues. But, we need to begin by having all police officers show restraint and good judgment when dealing with our community. If we can get police officers to show restraint and good judgment in conjunction with their training, this will be a tremendous step towards stopping unnecessary deaths, rebuilding trust and improving police community relations.

Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute chorus presents free concert

The premiere community concert of the Amazing Grace Chorus was held Saturday, December 6, 2014. The Melodies and Memories program is an outreach effort of the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute, bringing together about 15 African American singers who either have Alzheimer’s disease or are caring for someone who does. The program is based on the CHORUS program begun at New York University, which showed that learning new songs and singing helps improve memory and mood. The Helen Bader Foundation funded the Milwaukee pilot, the first in the country outside of NYU. Guest conductors for the event included Vanta Jones, Joe Nathaniel, Micah Shaw, Arlene Skwierawski and K.C. Williams; the event was emceed by WITI-TV FOX 6's Cassandra McShepard.

Attorney Lena Taylor, PKSD and community partners to provide free holiday food baskets The group hopes to help hundreds

For most, the holidays are a time for family, cheer and a good meal. However, for many residents working hard to make ends meet, buying extra food can be stressful. Attorney Lena C. Taylor, her colleagues at PKSD Law Firm, WNOV radio, and several community allies have partnered to assist those feeling the strain. Providing nearly a thousand baskets this past Thanksgiving, the group is appreciative of the collaboration, financial support and ability to help once more.

“It is an amazing effort, with nearly 100 volunteers, that brings together business, non-profit, and faith-based groups to help our neighbors,” said Attorney Taylor. The food basket give away will be held on Monday, December 22, 2014 at St. Mark Quality of Life Center, 1616 W. Atkinson Avenue, Milwaukee. The event runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information or to volunteer, please call 414-4393999. State Senator Lena Taylor

Editorials

Being Frank Christmas and New Year Eve are the last two holidays of the year. Many people will exchange gifts on Christmas and spend time with family. On New Year’s Eve everyone will be watching the clock to count in the New Year. This is a special time of the year for every American. Let’s take it further by giving ourselves the perfect gift, inner peace. Everyone who has ever received a gift has something they don’t want. It could be an ugly tie or a useless kitchen utensil. The majority of people make New Year’s resolutions. A vast majority of these resolutions are to give something up or do something better. Why not mix the gift with the resolution? By doing this you could give yourself the gift of inner peace. In this country people tend to constantly dredge up the past. This drudgery isn’t to

The peaceful gift

learn lessons but to make the present miserable. If there were any learning from the past, many of the events of the last year wouldn’t have happened. One major resolution should be to let the past be just that, the past. Once something has taken place if there is no action you can take at the time, let it go. To constantly become angry over something you can do nothing about is foolish. Take time to look at your life situation and let others live theirs. This is another resolution that brings the gift of inner peace. Many people are so busy monitoring other’s lives they forget their own. Once this happens a person forgets that they are living is okay. The misery someone else may be dealing with becomes another’s prison. It is very easy to become emotionally entwined with events or situations that haven’t happened to you.

CHILD WATCH

Once this happens the shine leaves your life to be replaced with another’s misery that isn’t your own reality. Many people have an abundance of material things. But very few have inner peace. There is nothing wrong with material things but they can’t replace living. No amount of cars and designer pumps will replace the simplicity and beauty of a life full of inner peace. One reason is there

will always be a new model of your car. There will always be a different style of pump from the same designer. This is why there is no permanent satisfaction from material things. With the gift of inner peace, enjoyment of these things increases because you see them for what they are. Another resolution or gift can be acceptance. Accept what is around you and enjoy it for just that. You live in a country that was founded on racism. To constantly bemoan the fact is borderline insanity. The USA is what it is, point blank. You can complain about the few atrocities that take place. Or you can roll with the good things that outnumber the atrocities. Do bad things happen? Yes, but once again, to focus on something you can’t take action on is wasteful. Inner peace is easy yet hard to achieve. Many peo-

3

ple don’t want inner peace because they like confusion. There is nothing wrong with this because CNN and MSNBC will keep them satisfied. But for the few who have had enough and want to try something different, try some of the previously mentioned resolutions. The good part is, since they are mental they are free. Also they are gifts you give to yourself so you don’t have to drop hints to anyone to get them for you. By: Marian Wright Edelman President of the Children's Defense Fund

Progress for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers

On December 10th President Obama hosted a White House Summit on Early Education, bringing together a broad coalition of philanthropic, business, education, child advocacy, and elected leaders and other key stakeholders. It was a welcome chance to celebrate progress in expanding access to quality early childhood development and learning opportunities for children from birth through age 5. Although we haven’t yet seen the passage of needed comprehensive legislation to provide lowincome and other at-risk children a full continuum of quality supports from voluntary home visiting programs to Early Head Start and Head Start, child care, pre-kindergarten and — I hope — full-day kindergarten, progress has been made in increasing access to and expanding quality programs and building support for future investments. The bipartisan budget agreement reached at the beginning of the year placed a priority on new investments in early learning by providing $250 million in new funding for Preschool Development Grants to enhance and expand access to quality preschool programs and $500 million for Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership awards. The President announced at the summit that 18 states will receive Preschool Development Grants

and hundreds of communities across 49 states will benefit from Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership awards. He also announced more than $330 million in new philanthropic commitments for early childhood development and learning. This new funding will allow the country to keep moving forward for our young children. This isn’t the only good news. In November the President signed into law a bipartisan bill to improve the quality of federally subsidized child care provided by the Child Care and Development Block Grant. The bill sets stronger health and safety standards for subsidized care, makes it easier for parents to find and keep quality child care, and takes steps to improve the quality of child care so that children get quality early childhood development services. A national poll released by the First Five Years Fund earlier this year found 71 percent of voters, including 60 percent of Republicans, support greater federal investments in early childhood education. Bipartisan efforts like this one reflect what many Americans already believe is the right thing to do for children and working parents. Hopefully adequate new funding for these critical improvements will follow. Action must also be taken early in 2015 to continue the Maternal and Infant

Early Childhood Home Visiting Program, which over the last six years has invested $1.9 billion in evidence-based programs at this critical front end of the early childhood continuum for infants and young children. We’re seeing progress at state and local levels, too. For example, Alabama increased funding for its state prekindergarten program by $10 million for fiscal year 2015, following a $9.4 million increase for fiscal year 2014. California’s budget included about $264 million in additional funding for early childhood programs, including $70 million for 11,500 new full-day, full-year preschool spaces, $17 million to provide child care assistance to an additional 1,500 children, and $68 million to increase reimbursement rates to child care and early education providers. Michigan increased funding for its Great Start School Readiness program by $65 million for the second year in a row; this year’s increase will allow more than 10,000 additional 4-year-olds to participate. Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin signed a law requiring all school dis-

tricts to make part-day prekindergarten available to all 3- and 4-year-old children. New York’s budget included a $1.5 billion, fiveyear investment to expand the state's prekindergarten program, with the majority of funding allocated to New York City. New York City’s Mayor Bill de Blasio was elected on a platform that included preschool expansion to combat income inequality. As a result of his strong leadership, more than 51,000 New York City children are being served this school year, more than doubling the reach of the city’s preschool system. Seattle voters approved a ballot initiative in November that will pay preschool tuition for up to 2,000 low-income children through a four-year property tax hike. And in December the Indianapolis City-County Council voted to approve a $40 million public-private partnership between the city, business, and philanthropic leaders to give more than 1,000 poor Indianapolis children access to high-quality preschool, a plan championed by Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard. Other mayors are also stepping up to the plate for our youngest children. At their 2014 annual meeting, the U.S. Conference of Mayors adopted three resolutions affirming their commitment to early childhood development: increased funding for

high-quality programs to make them universally accessible, support of the President’s early childhood education agenda, and making a national commitment to building an Early Learning Nation over the next decade. We need to applaud all of this progress and keep moving forward. Although studies show investments in quality early education can produce a rate of return to society significantly higher than returns on most stock market investments or traditional economic development projects, tens of thousands of children across the country are still waiting for the chance to participate. Our nation can’t afford not to significantly increase investments in early childhood development and learning, or to keep leaving so many poor babies, toddlers, and other young children behind. Marian Wright Edelman is President of the Children's Defense Fund whose Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. Rebuilding Our Community

Northside Church of God Cordially invites your church family to

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special for the Milwaukee Times

Taking a stand It is remarkable to witness the emergence of numerous non-violence protests all across America. Some could say that these are throwback concepts or “old school” from the days and times of the civil rights moments of the 1960’s and beyond. Nevertheless, it is a welcome sight to see such things in real time through the use of various media outlets and through social media. In so many ways the ability to see things unfold in real time without being there is helping us to transform our families, schools, neighborhoods, nation and world. The rise in recent protests and more has ignited a passion in all of us that things have to change. There is no more room for the “status quo” or same as usual practice which allows for some sort of lethal response being used to a perceived criminal behavior or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This moment is growing and has become multicultural at its base and is spreading like wild fire throughout America.

A Musical Celebration of the Best Christmas Ever

In addition, this moment is gaining new levels of foot soldiers that cross all socioeconomic barriers, including professional and college sport teams. These new waves of advocates are letting their voices be heard through wearing t-shirts, donations, demonstrations and social media. What gives us considerable hope is that these new moments are helping us to review policies, practices and various laws in serious ways. It is also helping us to identify gaps and breakdowns in systems. Additionally, it is helping to ensure transparency, which will allow for significant changes to be made. In addition, it is creating a new level of commu-

nity engagement and bringing new partners to the table for open discussions in solving some of our community more complex problems of unemployment, affordable housing, homelessness, mental health care and poverty. In the end and I hope that we each take the opportunity to join in with some of these moments, for our great democracy and its core values of freedom, fairness and justice hang in the balance. Our nation can only rise up to its true potential when its citizens truly participate in making America a place where everyone has a voice. And taking a stand with the right values and a clear moral compass is what makes all the difference in the world. What do you think?

Instead of waiting until January 1st to start your New Year’s resolutions, why not start right now with some 2014 solutions? Your 2014 to-do list may have some dust on it, but it’s not too late to tackle your goals and set even more. We’ve rounded up our top 15 things you need to do before 2015 to really start the new year off right! 1. Give something away Clean out your closets, give away some books – now is perfect time to purge. You could be a blessing to someone. 2. Say ‘I’m sorry’ It doesn’t matter how many years have passed, make this the year to apologize and clear the air. 3. Forgive somebody Iyanla Vanzant launched an entire class on forgiveness this year. Let go of the anger and the hurt and forgive someone. Not for them, but

Top 15 things to do before 2015 for YOU. 4. Forgive yourself The person who may have hurt you the most may be yourself. Maybe you’ve let yourself down in the past, but to truly move forward you have to forgive yourself. 5. Take a social media fast Could you go a single day without Facebook, Twitter and Instagram? Enjoy some quiet time alone or with loved ones in ‘real life’. 6. Go without your phone for a day There was once a time when cell phones weren’t attached to our ears and hands. Let’s get back to that! 7. Eat something new Fried snails may not sound appetizing to you, but expand your tastes at least once before the year ends. Order something unfamiliar next time you go out, or cook a new dish at home. 8. Reveal a crush What do you have to lose?

Food safety tips for holiday road trips

Hitting the road for the holidays? As you fill up the gas tank and check the air in the tires, don’t forget to pack some snacks and light meals for your holiday travel. You will be glad you did, even for short trips, if heavy traffic or weather conditions slow you down. Keep your backseat treats safe by following these easy tips. Choose carefully Pack easy-to-transport, shelf-stable foods including cereal, trail mix, popcorn, single-serve containers of applesauce, cans of tuna, peanut butter sandwiches, fresh fruit, carrots and celery. Clean up Wash hands with soap and water during food preparation, especially between tasks. If you can’t get to a restroom to wash your hands, pack moist towelettes or a hand sanitizer to clean up before digging in. Know your foods’ limits

An NCON Publication

Don’t let food sit unrefrigerated for more than two hours. Pack food with plenty of ice or a frozen ice pack in an insulated lunch bag or cooler. Use a refrigerator thermometer to make sure the temperature stays below 40°F. Apply the same rules to fast food If you stop for carry out or fast food on the road, take the same food safety precautions. Wash your hands before eating and don’t eat food that sits out for more than two hours. Pack leftovers with care If you bring home leftovers on the return trip, keep them chilled with ice or ice packs in an insulated cooler. If it’s cold outside, consider transporting food in the trunk rather than the heated car. Remember to reheat leftovers to 165°F before you serve them for a second round. Follow us on

Holiday shopping guide 2014: Best books for Christmas gifts (part 2) The clock is ticking, and the final minutes until Christmas are upon us. If you are still looking for those last minute gifts, why not try a book? There is something for everyone on your list. African American authors For the beauty on your gift list, wrap up “Bill Duke’s Dark Girls,” photography by Barron Claiborne, interviews by Shelia P. Moses. This wonderful book showcases the beauty of women in many skin tones, and the feelings they have for their unique color. Hint: this book is not just for young women; grandma might like reading it, too! You may need to find a gift for the historian who has everything, so look for “Samuel Wilbert Tucker: The Story of a Civil Rights Trailblazer and the 1939 Alexandria Library SitIn” by Nancy Noyes Silcox. Except for the fact that it has an abundance of pictures and a great timeline, the title says it all. Little kids I seriously don’t think I know one little kid who doesn’t like a bedtime story. Heck, I like a bedtime story, and I liked “Day is Done: Prayers and Blessings for Bedtime” by Elena Pasquali, illustrated by Natascia Ugliano. This is one of those books that can be read quietly for a soothing night-night, both for adult and for child. Wrap it up with “Little Owl’s Day” by Divya Srinivasan, a cute story about a little guy whose inability to sleep gets him into a big adventure. Board books are always great gifts for the smallest person on your list, and “I Love Hockey” is just right for the future sticks fan. And

keep this one in mind: “Little Birthday,” a book of riddles. Yes, unlike most board books, these two have a good amount of narrative, so they’re also presents you can read aloud. The mini-farmer on your list will want to unwrap “I Love You Just Enough” by Robbyn Smith van Frankenhuyzen, illustrated by Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen. It’s the tale of a wild baby duck and the girl who raised him after he was separated from his mother. But ducks grow faster than do little girls, and it causes a bit of concern… Who has enough books? Not your giftee, and not the kids in “The Children Who Loved Books” by Peter Carnavas. It’s the tale of too many and too few, but having enough of the important things. Wrap it up with “If You Wish” by Kate Westerlund and Robert Ingpen, a beautifully illustrated story of a little girl who learns that books can take her to all kinds of places without even leaving her house. For the child who loves making friends, you can’t go wrong with “Jenny & Lorenzo” by Toni Steiner and Eve Tharlet. It’s the tale of a mouse and her very unusual friendship with someone who wants to have her for dinner. Middle graders The budding politician (or the 7-to-13-year-old current events fan) will love owning “The U.S. Congress for Kids” by Ronald A. Reis, foreword by Rep. Henry A. Waxman,

afterword by Rep. Kristi Noem. This book includes history, stats, facts, pictures, graphs, and activities that underscore what your child learns. This is a great gift for the kid who just returned from or is going to visit the Capital this year. If there’s a mystery lover on your list, then look for “Somebody on this Bus is Going to Be Famous” by J.B. Cheaney. A strangely empty bus stop. A bus full of kids, each with one clue. A bus driver who acts all weird. Can your whodunit fan solve the mystery before the kids on the bus do it? “The Original Folk & Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm” translated and edited by Jack Zipes, illustrated by Andrea Dezso may be a challenge for kids this age. You might have to help with some of the words or you may even want to read it aloud together. But if your 7-to-12-year-old enjoys fables and such, then you can’t go wrong with this heavy, elegant investment in their reading future. Young science fans will devour “Before the World Was Ready: Stories of Daring Ge-

nius is Science” by Claire Eamer, pictures by SA Boothroyd. It’s a book about scientific theories that were originally ridiculed (along with their creators) and how those unfortunate men were eventually vindicated. For the lover of espionage, “Top Secret Files: World War II” by Stephanie Bearce will be a great gift. This is a nonfiction book about undercover work during the War, including spies and secret missions, rat bombs, double agents, and more. Bonus: it might get the kids interested in history, too. Teen readers Teen readers who love futuristic novels (but can’t handle a whole lot of fantasy) will love “The Scavengers” by Michael Perry. It’s the story of a young woman who’s left behind by her family when they leave town, and the only way she can survive is by scavenging – alone. Excitement. Danger. What more could your teen want? Wrap it up with “The Girl From the Well” by Rin Chupeco for a gruesome gift duo. For the teen who enjoys history, or for a diary-keeper, “Yoko’s Diary,” edited by Paul Ham might make a great gift. This is the true story of a 13-year-old Japanese girl who lived near Hiroshima during World War II. It’s a powerful book, made even more so by the editor’s notes. I also liked “Colonial Comics:

New England, 1620-1750,” edited by Jason Rodriguez. It’s a graphic book (a sort of comic book, if you’re wondering) about the early years of America, written by various authors and illustrated by various artists. So your teen has loved The Wizard of Oz since toddlerhood? Then wrap up “Dorothy Must Die” by Danielle Paige. It’s the story of the anti-Dorothy – a girl named Amy, who’s been trained as a warrior. Dark? Yep, but great for your fave fantasy fan. Wrap it up with “Night Sky” by Suzanne Brockmann and Melanie Brockmann. It’s a thriller about a kidnapping and a different kind of hero that may – or may not – save the day. (And yes, by the way, that’s novelist Suzanne Brockmann, of course). Novel lovers will completely enjoy “Boys Like You” by Juliana Stone, the story of a girl with a guilty broken heart and a boy with a different sort of painful burden, and how they find each other to help mend the ache. And there you are! A whole lot of ideas for that hard-tobuy-for person on your gift list. Best of all, if these ideas don’t fill the bill, then you can always give a gift certificate, or you can throw yourself at the mercy of your friendly bookseller. Yes, he or she is absolutely brimming with ideas for everybody on your gift list, so what are you waiting for? Season’s Readings! 238582006

Holy Jolly Tips

Good relationships with family and friends are important. So, view the holidays as a time to reconnect with people. Additionally, accepting help and support from those who care about you can help alleviate stress. Even volunteering at a local charity with your kids is a good way to connect with others, assist someone in need and teach your kids about the value of helping others.
