Milwaukee youth and police talk tactics, truth at UWM 'Dream.Plan.Act' summit Ferguson. NYC. Cleveland. Milwaukee. Relations between law enforcement and young black men are making headlines nationwide in the wake of police shootings of unarmed black men and youth. This was the backdrop of a Wednesday, December 17, 2014, conversation that brought together four UWM University Police officers and a group of young black men attending a university-sponsored summit. The four UWM police officers, who had decades of combined experience in the Milwaukee Police and Milwaukee County Sheriff ’s departments and Wisconsin State Patrol, urged the Milwaukee-area high schoolers to avoid making their own stereotypes of law enforcement, understand their rights and report negative or possibly

stances leading to the interaction. “Don’t let pride dictate the outcome,” Officer Theron Rogers said. “Get out alive and get out safe, and afterwards if you feel you’ve been treated unfairly, contact a lawyer or go to court.” Some advocates attending the session criticized the police officers for not confronting issues underlying recent incidents, like the shooting of Dontre Hamilton in a downtown Milwaukee park. UWM Officer Craig Rafferty said it was more important in the one-hour session to give the young men advice that came from the officers’ experiences as both law enforcement and as black men. “You need to know that you are us,” Officer Lamar Griffin told the students. Seven Wisconsin nonprofits receive $175,000 from Walmart Foundation Grant funding to support hunger, medical, and dental services for people in need
The Walmart Foundation has awarded $175,000 to seven nonprofits throughout the state of Wisconsin dedicated to serving residents through its core areas of giving: hunger relief and healthy eating, sustainability, career opportunity and women’s economic empowerment. “We’re proud to support nonprofit organizations that make a dynamic impact across the state,” said Todd Peterson, Walmart regional general manager. “Each organization is in a position to uniquely address the needs of the communities they serve and we are excited to support their efforts to help Wisconsin residents live better.” The Walmart Foundation supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better, awarding grants that have a longlasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S. Twice a year, the Foundation’s Wisconsin State Giving Program looks for organizations that address the needs of the communities they serve and make a significant social impact. The following nonprofits received a fourth cycle State Giving grant to fund local programs that have proven to help those in Wisconsin live better. Nonprofit recipients in Wisconsin include: City Year Milwaukee received a $25,000 grant to continue connecting students with their 84 AmeriCorps members serving as mentors and tutors to ensure the children are on track to graduate. “We are excited to receive this support from the Walmart Foundation for our work in Milwaukee and for the students we serve,” said Jason M. Holton, executive director and Vice President of City Year Milwaukee. “This grant from the Walmart Foundation is meaningful to City Year Milwaukee’s success this year, as their generous support provides us with the opportunity to continue our critical work of getting more students back on track
and graduating.” Hope House of Milwaukee received a $25,000 grant to support their Food for Housing, Pantry, and Children’s Programs. Hope House helps feed the hungry in the Walker's Point neighborhood of Milwaukee. “We are incredibly fortunate to have such strong supporters as the Walmart Foundation,” said Wendy Weckler, executive director at Hope House. “They enable us to positively impact scores of families and individuals by providing nutritious food. Their involvement with Hope House and with this community is appreciated beyond belief!” Open Arms Free Clinic received a $25,000 grant to cover the cost of critical medicines and lab diagnostics for its patients. Open Arms Free Clinic serves the health and wellness needs of more than 800 patients in Walworth County that are uninsured or under-insured Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin received a $25,000 grant to fund their FoodShare Outreach program. The program will help underserved families submit applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and receive food and nutritional support from the government. “We are incredibly grateful to the Walmart Foundation for their gift,” said Dan Stein, President and CEO of Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin. “Their generosity will allow us to provide the dignity and hope that people who are facing hunger receive when their cupboards are full.” Sharing Center received a $25,000 grant to fund basic needs programs that serve
Kenosha County families. Primarily, the grant will focus on the Center’s Food Pantry, and multiple Children’s InSchool Nutrition Programs. “The Center has counted on the Walmart Foundation for many years to help enrich the lives of families in rural Kenosha County,” said Sharon Pomaville, executive director of the Sharing Center. “We are grateful for their continuing support, and their understanding of the necessity of providing for the critical needs of our most vulnerable citizens.” Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic (WCCDC) received a $25,000 grant to fund the Healthy Smiles for Tots and Teens Program. The program will provide dental care for 2,600 low-income children in Waukesha County who are uninsured or underinsured. “Thanks to the generosity of the Walmart Foundation, the WCCDC will be able to provide critical preventative care and screenings for even more children in 2015,” says Renee Ramirez, Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic’s executive director. Wisconsin Dental Association Foundation (WDA) received a $25,000 grant to rent dental equipment and instruments for the Mission of Mercy program. The Mission of Mercy program is a two-day dental clinic that provides free dental care to those who would otherwise not be able to receive it. “We are very grateful for the financial support that the Walmart Foundation has provided for the WDA Foundation Mission of Mercy,” said Lani Becker, program coordinator for Wisconsin Dental Association. “Their support over the years has made
it possible for thousands of people to be taken out of dental pain, and to get back their smile which in turn improves their self-esteem and confidence. The Walmart Foundation helps us make a difference in the communities we serve.” In 2013, in Wisconsin, the Walmart Foundation awarded $24.7 million in cash and in-kind contributions and a total giving of $26.3 million including customer donations. Donations of cash, food, refrigerated trucks, mobile pantries and other resources are changing lives across America. In 2010, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation launched "Fighting Hunger Together" – a $2 billion cash and in-kind com-
mitment through 2015 to fight hunger in America. This initiative leverages Walmart's size and resources to provide nutritious food and the Walmart Foundation's ability to grant funding to nonprofits that help elevate the issue. To be considered for support, prospective grantee organizations must submit applications through the Walmart Foundation State Giving Program’s online grant application. Applicants must have a current 501(c) (3) tax-exempt status in order to meet the program’s minimum eligibility criteria. How Advent can help us embrace the true Spirit of Christmas
By: Sharon E. Watkins
Boy, do I need Advent this year! I need a respite from the commercial “Christmas season”–where the sacred and the secular collide and are awkwardly entangled for weeks, where good will and generosity struggle with crass consumerism, and where the birth of love into the world is reduced to “Jingle Bells.” My soul seeks the quieter depths of Advent, the Church’s four-week season of preparation leading up to Christmas. I need it this year
more than most, because the world seems to be going a little out of control. Ebola, Afghanistan/ Iraq/Syria, outrage over the deaths of unarmed citizens in our own streets, the inability of our elected leaders to even talk reasonably about solutions–all of these things worry me; buying gifts and eating Christmas goodies don’t distract enough. Advent calls for the opposite of distraction. Scriptures
of the season speak openly of the world’s agony. They foresee even worse days ahead. They call us to look,
clear-eyed, at the world – to acknowledge the pain. They call us to wake up! And then with eyes open, in Advent, we begin to have reason to hope. “Comfort, oh, comfort my people,” reads the scripture. God does not intend the world to live in pain, but rather to find wholeness. We hear scripture’s call on us to be the hope. “The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me… he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners.” In the reflective space of Advent, my distraction finds focus beyond the headlines. I see young people demonstrating to improve our justice system, and I see churches providing safe spaces for them. I see that an Ebola vaccine is nearly ready for testing. I see the many people of God joining to address hunger and poverty. I remember sometimes our greatest social trials lead to our most significant social advances. I start to feel the rekindling of new possibilities, and a call to

be part of that movement–a challenge to become myself as evidence of God’s goodness and beauty and love at work to bring wholeness out of the chaos. During Advent we light candles. They are a small light in the darkness. But when the darkness is especially intense, a small light shines all the brighter. Advent focuses me on those bits of light. It prepares me for the sacred celebration of Christmas– the welcoming of God’s love born into the world as a child, a small vulnerable child who changes the world through us when we pick up his challenge of love. I need Advent to remind me to look for signs of that love. I need its call to join with others to be that sign. Boy, do I need Advent this year! Sharon E. Watkins is the General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. She was the first woman to lead a mainline denomination in the U.S., and has served on the Advisory Council of the White House’s Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Life long learning: Getting a good education is ageless LaVenia Griffin, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student who was a little older than the other students in her class, felt a little nervous about working with them on a group project. “I spoke to one of the instructors and she just helped me to realized that I did have a lot to offer. I had a lot of experience, which could translate into wisdom, and if I just looked at that as strength instead of a weakness, then I would be okay,” Griffin explains. The instructor was right. Griffin, who received her BBA (bachelor’s of business administration) degree with concentrations in finance and human resources management in December, completed her bachelor’s degree in less than four years, while working full-time. Another graduate, Yusef Salameh, who received his bachelor’s degree in education with a focus on early childhood education in December, found his own experiences as the son of immigrants gave him special strengths and insights into the needs of young students who also have immigrant parents. His mother is from Mexico; his father from Jor-
LaVenia Griffin dan. “Some of my kids are in the same boat I was in,” says Salameh, who is currently student teaching a diverse group of second and third graders at Horace Mann Elementary in West Allis. “My parents are wonderful people and they really, really cared about education,” says Salameh. But as a child, however, he felt like his parents couldn’t help him as much as he would have liked because his schoolwork was always in English. Griffin, who is originally from Chicago, came to UWM after doing some serious soul searching about her career and deciding to pre-
pare herself for the future. When the company she worked at underwent some major internal reorganizing, she started taking classes at Milwaukee Area Technical College. Then in her mid30s, she wanted to develop the skills she felt were necessary to become an employee valued for unique, standout skills. She moved on to UWM through the Panther Tracks program after having a discussion with her MATC advisor. “It just seemed like a good idea.” “My accomplishing this goal and earning my undergraduate degree was definitely a family effort,” says Griffin, a mother of two and
grandmother of one, who graduated with a 3.67 GPA. At UWM, she found an area she was passionate about, and is now focused on finding a job in the Chicago area as a recruiter or benefits specialist. Salameh also found his passion for the field of education at UWM. A part-time job tutoring youngsters in the SPARK reading program – a partnership involving UWM and the Boys and Girls Club – inspired him to enter the early childhood education program. “It was an amazing experience, watching the students I worked with make progress in learning to read.” This past year has been a particularly busy one for Salameh. His wife, Angie, is a UWM School of Architecture & Urban Planning graduate and a new mom to Zara, the couple’s first child. He didn’t mind breaking a few stereotypes along the way – he was the only male graduate this December in the early childhood education program. One of his goals is to become principal of a bilingual public school, helping students from similar backgrounds. Modest about his speaking capabilities, he’s
familiar with Arabic and is working on perfecting his Spanish. “It’s vital that teachers and principals are able to work with young children of different backgrounds, particularly in those early years,” says Salameh.

Successfully set and achieve your weight loss goals
A
FAMILY FEATURES
s the pumpkin pie, holiday cocktail and sugar cookie memories begin to fade, we’re reminded that the time has come to set or “re-set” our goals. Popular New Year’s resolutions — to lose weight and/or stay fit — resurface with a bang year after year. You’ve probably heard people say, “Those who lose weight eventually gain it back.” Don’t give up hope! Many people who successfully maintained a substantial weight loss for more than a year have done it on their own. Registered dietitian Tara Gidus, also known as the Diet Diva, knows it can be a struggle to set goals and stick to them. “Prime weight loss season is upon us, and the need for realistic, achievable and tasty ways to make healthy lifestyle changes is as important as ever,” said Gidus. “An exercise and healthy eating focus, along with a positive attitude and the right tools, can lead to a happier and healthier you — a new you.” Help yourself to successfully achieve your weight loss resolution with Gidus’ tips.
Think of You. Take “me” time to rest, relax, shop or exercise for stress relief. Stress hormones have been tied to weight gain.
Break It Down. Have an ultimate goal, and then break it into mini goals that are easily achievable. This makes the road to success seem easier and allows you to celebrate along the way.
Flavor It. Calorie moderation doesn’t have to mean boring. Use Hidden Valley Original Ranch Salad Dressing & Seasoning Mix to add a punch of flavor without compromising calories. It’s especially great to use in dips and other game day snacks.
Keep Track. People who keep track of what they eat can lose up to twice as much weight as people who don’t. Jotting down how much you ate and how you were feeling can also help you connect food to energy and mood.
Get Your Zzz. Snooze your way to weight loss. Getting enough sleep is critical to keep the hormones that control your appetite in check.
Flex Your Muscles. The more muscle mass you have the more calories you burn while you are sleeping. Stay fit by doing strength training twice a week.
Don’t Multitask. Turn off distractions like the TV and computer while eating or you could lose track of how much has gone in. Tune in to your body’s hunger and fullness cues to know when to eat and when to stop.

'Dream.Plan.Act' (Continued from pg. 1) All four officers talked candidly about their own experiences with racial profiling and growing up with negative attitudes toward the police. “Everything they have been through, we have been through. We need to be vulnerable and honest,” Griffin said. “I grew up in the inner city,” Rafferty added. “I didn’t care too much for the police.” Asked about their own experiences with police, the young men were quick to offer personal examples. One high-schooler talked about how he and his brother were taken to a police station because they happened to be in the vicinity when a crime was committed. Another said his dad had started to train in law enforcement, but quit after experiencing racism from other trainees. The officers didn’t downplay their concerns, but encouraged the students to keep an open mind. “Like any profession, 5 percent of officers give the rest of us a bad name,” said Rafferty. Know how to respond One key piece of advice, reiterated in a handout, was the importance of know-

ing how to respond when stopped by the police – unfairly or not, according to the officers. It’s okay to ask the reason for the stop, but avoid the temptation to argue, curse or run away. “[Police] have the guns,” Rafferty said. “They have the helicopters.” But young men do need to know their rights, the officers said. They suggested specific resources that can provide help and information, including the American Civil Liberties Union, or the Urban Underground. Make a report It is also important for young black men who feel they’ve been treated unprofessionally to make reports to supervising officers or the department, according to the UWM officers. While the rogue officer may not be stopped immediately, reporting the incident helps track and establish a pattern of misbehavior. If possible, get the officer’s badge and car number, they advised. Make systemic change – from the inside One key way to counteract racism and bad behavior is from within, Brown said. He outlined the ways students could become police officers, through police academies or technical colleges. “By going into law enforcement, you can change it and make it more positive,” added Griffin.
