Willodine H . Carter

Obituary

was born on March 3, 1943 in Jasper Alabama. She began her formal education at Walker County Training School before moving to Milwaukee with her parents at the age of 11. Willa, as she was affectionately known to family and friends, completed her elementary education at Lloyd Street School here in Milwaukee and graduated from Riverside High School. She attended and graduated from Spencerian Business College. Willa continued taking appropriate business courses to improve her skills throughout her working life by taking selected business courses at Milwaukee Institute of Technology, now Milwaukee Area Technical College. Born into a Christian home, Willa accepted the Lord at a young age. The family united with St. Matthew CME Church under the leadership of Rev. William McLin, Sr. Her service to the Lord began after attending mission meetings with her grandmother, Beulah Rush. She sang in the famed Chancel Choir under the direction of Mrs. Precious Baldwin while in high school and became active with the Phyllis H. Bedford Missionary ministry where she served as secretary. She was a member of the Ida Mae Black Missionary Society and a member of the Cynthia Rush Alexander Circle. Willa was instrumental in organizing the Balm of Gilead Health Initiative which continues to serve the church. She served on the Stewardess Board and was a committed Conference participant, for as long as she could be, attending as many as her health would allow. Lastly, Willa served as an advisor to the Phyllis H. Bedford Missionary Department until her transition to heaven. Because of her missionary’s heart Willa was chosen to represent St. Matthew in Church Women United (CWU), a world-wide mission organization. She was elected by and served as the President of the Milwaukee Unit of Church Women United for many years. She was awarded their prestigious “Valiant Woman Award”, with commendations, by the organization. Willa’s vocational calling was in the field of Healthcare Administration. She answered and began her career while in high school by working in the offices of Dr. John Terry. She worked with and for him until his retirement. She used those experiences as she moved onward and upward, working for health maintenance organizations (HMOs), managing temporary nursing businesses, and Unicare Health Corporation at Plymouth Manor Nursing Home in Milwaukee. Willa finally decided to go into business for herself. Her business, W.H. Carter, offered training to women looking to change their lives and circumstances. She offered training in the areas of hospital unit secretaries, medical transcription and other medically administrative tasks. Willa was able to secure contracts with private employment agencies, and the State of Wisconsin-Workforce. She taught and lectured at University of Wisconsin- Extension campuses and MATC until she was forced into retirement because of increased health challenges. She was still relied on for consultant services for some time after she closed her business. Willodine married Warren “Tiny” Carter in 1965, but he preceded her in death. Willa leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Mrs. Willie (Rev. Paul-deceased) Thomas; her daughter, Shameka Denise Carter; four granddaughters, Aniaya, Nariaya, Reagan and Riley; her godbrother Roderick (Kattie) Rush, God sisters Dr. Donna Kahl Wilkerson, Willette Bowie, Gwendolyn Honeysucker, goddaughter Ronnie Owens and a host of relatives and friends.
