A Casual Soirée Black & White PJ Party “Black-and-white PJs”: these were the words on the invitation for a ladies-only fund-raising event in support of the Milton District Hospital Foundation (MDHF) held on November 8, 2013. Tickets sold out well before the highly anticipated soirée. Black-and-White Pajama Party organizers Margaret Saliba and Tiffany Budler from the Teatro Conference and Event Centre are elated to announce that this year’s Blackand-White Pajama party was wildly successful. The Black-and-White Pajama Party was nothing short of a fabled evening: a delightful way for the women of Milton’s community to come together for a night of excitement in support of our local hospital. Throughout the evening, there were games, a silent auction, belly dancing, and a showstopping fashion show. A number of local vendors provided a variety of services such as massages, and products were also featured. Guests raved about the evening. Eleanor Hayward said, “The second annual Black-and-White PJ Party was a wonderful night. It was great hearing about the Milton District Hospital Foundation and where the fund-raising money would go to support the hospital.” Kyla Holt added, “Being part of the Black-and-White PJ Party was an amazing experience. Not only was I working with wonderful ladies in our community to help raise funds for our great hospital, but I also had a ton of fun while helping to plan this amazing event. It was truly an unforgettable night: from our first-ever fashion show to all of the fun I could see everyone was having. It’s a forever memory for me.”

The proceeds from this year’s event will be put towards the purchase of X-Care software for the CT scanner at the Milton District Hospital. With the installation of the X-Care software, patients undergoing CT examinations of the breast, chest and neck will have reduced exposure of the most dosesensitive organs such as the breasts, the thyroid and the eye lens. It is heartening to see the proceeds from the event going towards an item that will enhance health-care services for every member of the Milton community.

As event guest Angie Wagenaar said, “I had such an amazing evening at my second Black-and-White PJ Party. I am always amazed at how many talented and generous women live in our community.”

Approximately $11,400 was raised for the MDHF from the second annual Black-and-White Pajama Party, and donations are still rolling in. If you would like to make a donation to the MDHF, please visit mdhf.ca and click “Donate.”

Event co-organizer Marg Saliba declared, “What can I possibly say? I’m so filled with feelings of thankfulness—I don’t even know where to begin. This was a wonderful way to support the Milton District Hospital Foundation. I had a phenomenal partner in Tiffany (Budler) from Teatro as well as an amazing committee. Teatro was an absolutely wonderful venue and the meal was outstanding. Our great local vendors and practitioners came out in support as they always do. We had so much fun going on at our party—a fantastic fashion show, a plethora of gifts from our generous businesses, and the best gift of all—our beautiful guests all clad in black-andwhite PJs.” Co-organizer Budler added, “We (Teatro) loved working on this event with our great partner Marg Saliba and committee this year, without all of whom we couldn’t have pulled off the second annual Black-and-White PJ Party. MDHF is a great cause where the funds stay and help the local Milton community—what more can we ask for?”

Wine Tasting

M

ilton patrons out on the town at Casa Americano on November 7 enjoyed local red and white wines for a great cause.

All that was required to join in on the taste test and enter a raffle for a chance to win an iPad was to place a minimum $5 donation to United Way Milton into a giant wine glass. The event was hosted by RDC Networks, which provides tech support for small- and medium-sized businesses with a specialized focus on Windows systems. “It’s a fun community thing,” said RDC Networks vice president Carol Duvall. “These are all our friends, and we just kind of said, ‘Hey, come on out, there’s wine!’” United Way Milton CEO Kate Williamson said events raising money such as wine tastings will go a long way toward helping the charity reach its 2013 fund-raising target of $705,300. “We’re going to use this money to help our fund-raising drive this year,” she said. “Milton is such a great place to live, but there is still so much need. It’s wonderful to see everyone come together to help as best we can.”

Needs Financial Support 8 | Milton Villager

By Stuart Service Photos by Ann Kornuta he Craig Kielburger Spartans football program could fumble unless the Milton high school can raise enough money by end of the academic year.

T

Involved in the fund-raising effort is Dave Spragge, a Craig Kielburger Secondary School (CKSS) guidance counsellor who said the school must raise a minimum $45,000 to keep the junior team running and add a senior team in September 2014. Beyond saving the Spartans, CKSS’s funding wish list also includes a scoreboard, bleachers and practice equipment. The Spartans currently use a portable to store its shoulder pads and helmets, a situation that, if money permits, Spragge hopes to soon change by constructing a designated equipment building. The long-term goal of the fundraising is to build a dedicated facility that would include change rooms, a locker room, and also an indoor practice space that would also be used for the CKSS Wrestling Team. This goal could well run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. “We’ve got to make sure it survives,” Spragge said. The CKSS Spartans junior football team ended their triumphant inaugural season on November 19, losing 20–0 in the Halton Secondary School Athletic Association Tier 3 championship game in Burlington to Frank Hayden Secondary School. CKSS ended the season with a 6–2 record.

Moments before kickoff of their semi-final contest, the Craig Kielburger Spartans defence and special teams lined up to shield their opponents’ sightline as the offence practiced some plays.

“We started football here because we want to offer young boys an opportunity to get engaged and to be part of something at school,” Spragge said. “They’re all doing better in school as a result of participating in football.” The roster of about 40 ninth- and tenth-grade students included just three players with previous football experience. Rob Dewar, an enthusiastic parent volunteer, whose son, Tanner, played safety on the team, gives all the credit to the Spartans’ coaching staff for “turning these young boys into men.”

Parent volunteer Rob Dewar and Craig Kielburger Spartans junior team head coach Dave Forsyth

“The team just continued to progress week after week,”Dewar said, attributing that progress to extraordinary amounts of volunteer hours donated by teaching staff, including head coach Dave Forsyth. “Just a spectacular amount of work,” Dewar said. “Mission number one is these kids have to get back on the field next year.” Donations can be made to the CKSS football program by visiting www.ckssfootball.ca and clicking the “Donate Now” button.

Milton Film Festival Rolls Out the Red Carpet By

T

he Milton Film Festival committee held a press conference last month revealing the eight films that will be playing at Milton’s first-ever film festival the weekend of January 11 and 12 at the Milton Centre for the Arts. “It gives film lovers here and from the surrounding areas the opportunity to get the film festival experience right here in Milton,” said Jennifer Smith, festival director and committee chair. The eight films expected to be shown that weekend are Blancanieves, Safety Not Guaranteed, The Last White Knight, The Hunt, Frances Ha, Kumare, Laurence Anyways and English Vinglish. The films represent five different countries and are in four different languages, including one film that is silent. The film festival will also be showing short films from local and regional filmmakers. Weekend passes will be sold for $69, and tickets for individual movies will be available for purchase at $11 per ticket. For those who hold weekend passes or tickets to see The Hunt, a gala reception will be held before The Hunt is screened on Saturday night. Ron Base, former film critic for the Toronto Star and local author, will be the festival’s host and MC. “When I asked Ron to be our MC and host, he told me that after he quit the film critic biz, he swore he would never attend another film festival,” said Smith. “But for this, for us, he would make an exception.” The Milton Film Festival recently partnered up with TIFF’s Film Circuit Program with hope to remind the community how important films are.

“I suddenly realized how starved we are for good movies,” said Base. “If you want to see Iron Man 3 in Milton it’s not a problem, but if you want to see anything else you have to go to Toronto. Jennifer and her team are trying to change that.” Milton native Steve Belford, who has acted in Degrassi, Radio Free Roscoe and G-Spot, will be the festival’s special guest. Not only has Belford had success in his acting career, but he is looking forward to positive feedback on his short film A Star on Hollywood Boulevard, which will be screened at the film festival.

Sochi Is Fast Approaching,

Share the Dream!

“I’m really excited about this festival,” said Belford. “I think it’s going to have an amazing turnout; I urge you all to come.” It is expected that other unannounced guests will be in attendance at the Milton Film Festival.

With a limited number of weekend passes and the excitement around the first-ever film festival in Milton, it is expected that tickets will go fast. Tickets can be purchased at the Chudleigh box office inside the Milton Centre for the Arts. “Everyone I spoke to loved the idea of doing this here in Milton,” said Smith. Share The Dream Committee and friends at the Share The Dream Fundraiser By Samantha Dotson

S

hare the Dream held a fund-raiser for Olympic athlete Travis Gerrits on Saturday, November 16, that was not only a huge success but also yet another event that brought the community closer together for a common cause: supporting our hometown hero. The fund-raiser boasted a silent auction, games played for prizes, and even darts and mini golf. Tasty food and beverages were made available while members of the community perused the auction items and Travis’s memorabilia. All of the items that were auctioned off and won as prizes were generously donated by various members of the community. It took 12 committee members who met every week for two months, and twice the week of the fund-raiser, to get everything together. Their dedication ensured the success of the event. “This is something the community can get on board with,” said Kristi Vander Byl, Share the Dream committee member. “He’s going to the Olympics for Milton—he’s going to bring home the gold.” “They’re a wonderful family, they’re really good friends to us and Travis is like another son to me; that’s why I’m here.” After auctioning off a brand-new 2012 Vespa, those in attendance enjoyed Travis’s Skyping in from British Columbia where he has begun his training on snow. Travis expressed his gratitude towards everyone in his hometown and insisted that “it takes a village to raise an Olympian.” “This means a lot to the town of Milton,” said Angelo Posteraro, member of the Share the Dream committee. “The whole idea behind this is that we are sharing the dream that Travis brings home the gold on Family Day in Sochi, Russia.” The guests at the fund-raiser were not strictly Miltonians; supporters also came from London and Barrie, and even Travis’s uncle flew in from Alberta. The Gerrits family is grateful for continuing support from the community as Travis closes in on the end of the road to Sochi. “Thank you to our dear friends from the Share the Dream committee and those who made last night incredible. We are so blessed to be surrounded by such love.”

On December 8, the short films that will be screened at the festival will be announced. Jennifer and her team were pleased with the number of submissions that were sent in by talented local filmmakers.

Santa Claus Parade 2013 a Day to Remember 12 | Milton Villager

By Samantha Dotson

M

other Nature graced Milton with warmer weather on the day of the Santa Claus Parade last month, which guaranteed smiles on every face that lined Main Street as the magnificent floats drove past. From the gigantic Cookie Monster to the various costumes right up until Jolly Saint Nick himself, the parade was an absolute success. Every single float was a masterpiece, holiday classics filled the air and everyone was dancing. Candy floated more freely than on Halloween night. It was a day for the books, to say the least. The organizers had everything together perfectly: no delays and no malfunctions to speak of. The hordes of Miltonians who crowded Main Street from Bronte Street to the GO Station were extremely pleased. If you could not make this year’s Santa Claus Parade, make sure to mark it on your calendars for 2014!

Halton Women go Boudoir for a Cause By Laura Steiner | Photo by Jennifer Bedford

M

ultiple sclerosis (MS) was first identified by French neurologist Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot in 1868. The disease affects women and men from their teens to mid-forties; there is no cure or known cause. Canada has one of the highest incidences of MS, with three new cases being diagnosed daily. Canadians with MS have resources available through the MS Society of Canada, a group dedicated to “finding a cure, and enhancing the quality of life.” The MS Society offers information on research, treatments and how to find local resources. The Halton Chapter provides services and support to people with MS throughout Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills. On October 19, the Halton Chapter held its first annual MS Boudoir Gala at the Royal Ontario Golf Club. Women from across Halton pulled out their red-and-white nightwear and accessories and joined volunteers to raise money for local programs and crown MS Boudoir. Each table voted one person to model. Frances Seeley was voted into the contest for her table. She wore red-and-black pajamas accessorized with a feather boa and tiara. The models first had to parade around the banquet hall, and everyone applauded for the best-dressed. Then the competition was narrowed to six people, and Seeley had to learn a provocative dance to perform for the crowd. “The MS Boudoir contest was hilarious,” she described. Seeley has been diagnosed with

relapsing-remitting MS affecting her legs and spine. She ended up coming in third. The winner got a boudoir photo shoot complete with makeup. The gala included raffle tickets, a silent auction, and a vendor’s marketplace. It was a full evening of “wow,” as Seeley described it. The evening’s efforts made ten thousand dollars, all of it to stay in the community. The money will go towards local programs and client services, including home support and financial aid for mobility devices such as wheelchairs and walkers. The Halton Chapter has contributed over $1 million to research over the last 10 years. For more information on the MS Society’s Halton chapter, visit www.mssociety.ca.
