Glamorous hospital gala raises big bucks

T

he 2014 Gift of Health Gala was a great excuse to dress to the nines and to donate as much cash as possible to a great cause.

The Mahalo-themed event at Rattlesnake Golf Club on May 31, organized by the Milton District Hospital Foundation, raised more than $170,000 and surpassed last year’s annual fundraiser by about $20,000.

This could be partly attributed to being another sold-out, dinner-and-dance of about 300 people, or perhaps it was the bidding wars that broke out among the donations of 116 extravagant silent auction items, including trips to Aruba and Cancun, and tickets to see the Blue Jays, Toronto FC, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. “Galas like this can be very expensive — no doubt,” said Milton resident and gala emcee Scott Fox, a longtime host of Z103.5 FM’s morning-drive broadcast. “One of the great things they did this year is they introduced mid-level donations. So it’s $250 to buy a bear, and this bear gets you a 100 per cent charitable tax receipt — a write-off.” Those bears go back to the hospital to be given to kids that are underprivileged.

“It’s a very philanthropic gift and it’s a good way for people at a lower price point to support the cause because

it’s usually one extreme or the other: you’ve got to spend thousands or you won’t get to spend anything,” Fox said. He said he’s glad to keep coming back to host the annual MDHF gala year after year because of how important the cause is to his community.

“It’s a worthy cause because it’s local — which I love — and it’s a good opportunity to see the people in Milton who don’t get together nearly enough,” he said. “There’s a million-and-one events in Toronto where people get together, but we don’t do enough of them here in Milton.”

“This is a wonderful event,” said Anne Ondercin, Manager, Development at MDHF. “If you look around, you see all these different people coming together to celebrate what we are doing for the hospital.” Ondercin added that funds raised at the gala would go towards the purchase of “a really intricate piece of software that links everything together.” In other words, a state-ofthe-art patient tracking system that will play a major role in modernizing Milton’s hospital. The ICT Patient Tracking system will instantly capture information such as heart rates, temperature and blood pressure; information that will greatly assist healthcare professionals and aid in timely diagnosis and treatment. Prior to the live auction, Polynesian Fire Dancers, live dancing and music, Milton Mayor Gord Krantz expected a great time had by all and a loosening of the wallets. “Most of the people here I suspect are ready, able and willing to participate, and to get the plastic out if needed.”

ilton eBike is the town’s first electronic bike retailer to introduce the fastest, most cost-efficient mode of transportation that doesn’t involve a car, a driver’s license or monthly insurance payments. Starting at $899, Milton eBike offers a variety of electronic scooters that can travel up to 32 km/h for a distance of about 50 km on a single battery charge.

“They’re a fantastic way to reduce our carbon footprint. Not only that, they’re a fun, reliable way to get around town to and from school and work,” said Rick Di Lorenzo, owner of Milton eBike. “Once you’ve bought a bike, all you’ll need is a helmet and a power outlet. And it’ll only cost about 25 cents to fully charge the bike’s battery.” Milton eBike is the town’s first business to offer Daymak bikes.

“It’s a Canadian company with a history of developing eBikes going back over 10 years. They literally helped put eBikes on the map in Canada and remain the #1 seller of electric bikes and scooters in Ontario,” Di Lorenzo said.

“They have a distribution system of over 65 dealers across Canada, but didn’t have a Milton dealer yet,” he continued. “eBikes and electric scooters are cool. It would be great if

people in Milton could purchase an eBike locally and know that it’s backed by a reputable manufacturer’s warranty and support network.”

Milton eBike is located in a private showroom near Main Street and Thompson Road and open for Saturday appointments. Di Lorenzo plans to host a tent sale on Saturday, July 19 at 925 Main Street East from 1 to 5 pm where $50 from each eBike sale will be donated to either Milton United Way or Milton District Hospital Foundation at the purchasers’ choice.

Punk bands

interrupt Milton’s music scene to rock

M

ilton’s music scene was revived back to life this summer by Deren Bostanci’s and Kaeh Callahan’s desire to rock.

Bostanci has always been regular at live shows in Milton, but has recently started to feel like the town “has all but lost its music scene over the past few years.”

“Well I say we fire it up once again. This is the first show for the summer and its going to be damn good.”

Bostanci said he’s been disappointed lately by local live music being geared towards “I guess, an older crowd.” “No one has really made the initiative to start throwing concerts again. This year we’ve got a group of people interested in the cause and we all came together and discussed how and where this will happen.”

The show was set to take place at the Milton Skate Park, but Bostanci and Callahan called an audible at the line upon securing an even better location at a property on Tremaine Rd. What eventually went down throughout the afternoon and evening of June 14 was a diverse sound of musicians at their all-day mini- Coachella. The Backyard Bash was headlined by Bostanci’s punk band, Setback, and Georgetown punk rockers Mill Pond.

Opening for the punk acts was the three-piece poetic rock group Bien Agiter, fronted by the owner of Culture Rising on Main Street. The Bash opened with the acoustic act of Robb Young followed by metal groups Noisefeeder and My Dear Malice. by Stuart Service

Murder At The Inn Murder Mystery Dinner Theme Fundraiser in support of Milton District Hospital Foundation

O

n a refreshingly cool evening on June 13, 2014, a group of enthusiastic people entered the Mohawk Inn & Conference Centre, a venue epitomizing rustic charm. Given it was Friday the 13th; the theme could not have been more aptly chosen. An evening of mystery awaited the attendees for the “Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre” organized by Milton Business Connections – the event was a fundraiser in support of the Milton District Hospital Foundation. As guests milled about the room during the cocktail reception, they enjoyed drinks that were cleverly named and visually represented with bold blackberry and rich red colours, the theme: Murder At The Inn. After introductory speeches, the guests sat down and were entertained by Brightside Players, a theatre troupe. The actors got the mock-grisly festivities going by taking to the stage and dramatically playing out the death of Chase Ryan Young, lead singer of the band CRY.

By Stuart Service | Photos by Ann Kornuta By Elizabeth Kogan | Photos by Eva Mende-Gibson

The guests, assisted by the actors coming around to make chit-chat about the scandalous and untimely death of Young, furrowed their brows in consternation and furiously made mental notes to figure out the identity of the murderer. Tamara Lopez, who played Detective Shirley Knott during the murder mystery event, declared ecstatically: “I thought the theme for the fundraiser was ingenious. I was very happy that the acting troupe that I’m a part of; was selected to perform for this fundraiser supporting such a great cause, Milton’s hospital. This was our first-ever murder mystery and was a wonderful learning opportunity for us. The Mohawk hall was a superb location – the layout was perfect. Our acting group did a lot of pre-planning and it was truly a collaborative effort. I loved seeing how involved the guests got in the game and how they were using the clues that we were dropping to identify the culprit. I would definitely do it all again in a heartbeat.” The guests were treated to an exquisite feast at the Mohawk that evening and savoured savoury chicken and beef dishes, scrumptious salads, mouth-watering mashed potatoes, and a delightfully moist carrot cake. While guests and actors interacted, another event attraction was in full swing. A video booth was set up, whereby guests could go in and play silly, play serious, play whatever mood or character struck their fancy. Scenes of bubble blowing; streamer throwing; mock arrests; mock stabbings; kisses, and all-around hilarious entertainment ensued. You can see the video online at facebook.com/miltonvillager To finish off the murder mystery theme, the guests then cast their votes for the murder suspect and with melodramatic flourish, the culprit was revealed: Young’s adopted daughter, Ovation Spankie Young.

Lena White, a Milton Business Connections member and one of the event organizers exclaimed, “This is the most fun I’ve ever had planning a fundraising event. A fantastic night was had!” The evening did not end with the end of the theatre performance and in fact, DJ “Rockin’ Rob” Hewlett got the music going and the guests took to the dance floor to continue on with the festivities.

My heart says a huge thanks to Bridget and Shawn Saulnier from the Mohawk Inn & Convention Centre for everything they did to make this event unforgettable. The Mohawk staff worked very hard. n May 27th of this year, an open meeting was held at the Milton Centre for the Arts (MCA) to explore the viability of a Milton based community orchestra. Those who attended the meeting unanimously voiced a strong desire to pursue the formation of a new orchestra, feeling that the time was right for the Milton community.

After touring the MCA, Sabatino Vacca, Music Director of both the Cambridge Symphony and Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestras said he was thrilled to see such a beautiful performing arts centre in Milton. “It struck me that along with this new concert venue, it would be wonderful to have a Milton based Orchestra, and I was encouraged to explore this further after conversations with the MCA’s Manager, Rob Mackay,” Vacca stated.

After a subsequent meeting on June 18th, the idea has solidified, and the future orchestra was given a name; the Milton Philharmonic. Mr. Vacca and the initial founding group have begun the process of searching out local musicians who might be interested in auditioning. According to Vacca, “We will hold scheduled auditions during the week of August 18th, exact date to be determined, with a secondary date on September 8th to accommodate those absent during the summer.” Mr. Vacca is quick to reassure that the word ‘audition’ shouldn’t cause alarm; it is largely used as a tool for placement. “We’d like to create something special for the community, and build partnerships with other Arts organizations. There are a lot of possibilities if the desire is there.” Vacca also stated that he has a strong opera background and hopes to bring opera concerts and performances to the area as well, utilizing as much local talent as possible.

The introductory season for the Milton Philharmonic will run early September until May 2015, with rehearsals tentatively set for Monday evenings. Concert dates will be announced on the website. For its first season, there will be 3 primary concerts plus various community events. Details and news will be posted on the Milton Philharmonic website at www.miltonphilharmonic.com.

If you are interested in auditioning, contact Sabatino Vacca at sabatino@miltonphilharmonic.com. To inquire about the Board or volunteering, contact inquiries@miltonphilharmonic.com or go to www.miltonphilharmonic.com

Milton Strawberry Fair Fundraising Never Tasted So Good

T

he weather was warm and sunny on Saturday, June 21st, when locals gathered at the Milton Fairgrounds for the 34th Annual Strawberry Fair. This delicious event was presented by the Milton District Hospital Auxiliary and all proceeds went toward the Milton District Hospital. June Rushak, the convener and organizer of the event, said that this year the money will mostly go to the expansion of the hospital, although previously the money raised was used to purchase new equipment. The main attractions were the Strawberry Pancake Breakfast from 9-11 am and the various strawberry-themed foods sold, including strawberry shortcake, strawberries and ice cream and strawberry slushies, with strawberries generously donated by Andrews’ Scenic Acres. After the breakfast, the opening ceremonies were held. The fair provided plenty of entertainment for all ages, with a kids’ train that circled the fairgrounds, bouncy castles, limbo dancing, a Teddy Bear Hospital, a sandbox, a card game, Mountsberg Birds of Prey, a rummage sale, local car dealerships showcasing new cars and a vendors marketplace. Milton and District Horticultural Society also presented a judged Flower Show. Ensuring the event’s success were the hospital auxiliary volunteers, who hosted most of the

booths. There was a steady flow of dancers, singers and musicians on the main stage, including Bollywood Dancers, Rock This Way and dancers from The Dance Class. Lisa Burka-Daniels, who attended the event, said she enjoyed “how many things there are to do for kids. That’s a huge thing because [our son] is only two, so anything that gets us outside that has a lot of stuff for kids is great.” Another parent, Vinnie Recile, enjoyed the fact that “it’s not crowded and it’s got nice events for kids.” She also commented on the perfect weather. The Milton District Hospital Auxiliary was founded in 1959 and has over 250 adult and youth volunteers, according to the Halton Health Care website. The charity raises money with several events throughout the year. Rushak said the auxiliary aims to raise $20,000 each year with the fair, but with a $10,000 donation from Mohawk Racetrack this year they may be able to raise around $30,000. The fair ran later and longer than previous years because attendees had enjoyed the event so much that they wanted it to end later. For more info visit www.haltonhealthcare.ca

T

he first annual Milton Family Fun Run featured a 5 km run and a 1km Tot Trot designed to bring families together in support of the Children’s Aid Foundation of Halton. The foundation funds programs that give Canada’s most neglected, vulnerable kids the support they need to reinvent their lives. Organizer Lisa Roach said the run took just shy of a year to organize.

What does it take to organize an event like this? “Lots of sponsors and volunteers and a great community that goes behind supporting you,” she said, adding that she was first introduced to the Children’s Aid Foundation at the Stardust Gala a few years ago. “It just clicked with me. Having three children and, knowing that I can support them and knowing that other children don’t have that same support, I had to help.”

Children’s Aid Foundation of Halton president Chris Scott, a Milton resident for nine years, said before the start of the race that his new home is “a fantastic place to live” because of the large turnout for the Fun Run on June 1st at the Fairgrounds. “It’s events like this that allow us to raise the funds we need to support the children and youth care in Halton. Believe it or not there are more than there should be in Halton that need our help.” The beautiful sunny day at the track featured Zumba dancing, prizes, and many participants —all of whom received a medal and some good exercise.

he sweet sound of young voices filled the Milton Centre for the Arts during the evening of May 21, 2014, for the opening night of Willy Wonka Jr. presented by Milton Youth Theatre Productions (MYTP). The audience murmured coos of appreciation as the “Candy Man” song was sung to signal the introduction of the main character, Willy Wonka, the unconventional and elusive owner of a chocolate factory. The young actors took to the task of transforming into their respective roles. They masterfully manipulated their voices to mimic foreign accents, representative of the characters from countries around the world who are competing for a golden ticket for a chance to view Willy Wonka’s mythical candy palace. Director Brooke Belvedere, who also has experience in stage managing and choreography, explained that there were three different casts for the three separate performances held on May 21, May 22, and May 23.

The young group of actors, ranging in age from 3 years old to 13 years old came together in March 2014 and practiced once weekly to prepare for the show. “The best part of it all,” Belvedere shared, “was seeing the kids start from scratch and in such a short time, they were able to pull off a very impressive performance.” Kendra, one of the actors described the experience as “Awesome!” Another actor Laura declared, “It feels good to be here.”

The audience watched intently as the production elements of sound and lighting came together and brought to vibrant life by the enthusiasm of the young but mighty performers. The MTYP acting team enthralled, entertained, and most importantly, they inspired us.

Tim Hortons Provides an Extra “Jolt” for Electric Vehicle Drivers T

im Hortons has found a new way to charge up the morning for Electric Vehicle drivers. On June 19, the location at Louis St. Laurent (LSL) and Thompson Road (Rd) unveiled Sun Country Highway’s first charging station for Electric vehicles in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The charging station is located between two spots on the southern end of the parking lot allocated for electric cars. The spots feature a green square with a white car on them, and a plug circling it. The charging post itself looks like a gas pump with two plugs on either side providing 48 amps of power. The unit was installed when the store was built, and opened last fall. The technology appealed to Tim Hortons Owner Daniel Sdao, who also has personal experience with electric cars as a Tesla owner. “I love car culture, but it would be nice to do something that’s more energy efficient.” He did the math adding together the amount spent on electricity to charge it, along with the insurance and discovered it was more cost efficient in the long-term too. Sdao saw it as a chance to share his enthusiasm, and wanted to incorporate the restaurant as well. “You can walk into

By Laura Steiner | Photos by Ann Kornuta

Tim’s and see people from all walks of life, all different backgrounds. And they all get to the store in their own ways.” The variety of electric vehicles on display at the event was a testament to that. From the sporty two-door Tesla to the Chevrolet Volt, it’s becoming obvious that electric cars are here to stay. They have all the same features as a gas-powered car, and run so quietly you have to watch them move. On-hand at the demonstration was the world’s first solar-powered pickup truck from Via Motors. Solar panels are on the truck’s hard top; as it sits in the sun it charges the battery. Sun Country Regional Director Stephen Bieda emphasized the fact the technology keeps it local. “When you use energy to power your car, you’re using energy produced locally. When you buy electricity from your local utility (Milton Hydro), you’re supporting your local economy.” Gasoline and oil aren’t produced in Ontario. Sun Country has over 1400 charging station locations across the country. For more information visit: www.suncountryhighway.ca. For more information on the solar-powered truck visit: viamotors.com.
