Just like Milwaukee, we’re not what people usually expect. We’re more diverse. More impactful. More modern. From the stage to the streets, the things we do, we do to bring out the best in our region. Our work is representative of Milwaukee’s rich diversity as we aim to be a theater that is welcoming and inspirational to all.

Milwaukee Rep 2021/22 Season

A Note From

Artistic Director Mark Clements Good things sometimes just take a little more time to come to fruition. Antonio’s Song/I Was Dreaming of a Son may be the longest anticipated co-production in theater history – or – at least, Milwaukee Rep’s history. After premiering the show at the Contemporary American Theater Festival (CATF) in the summer of 2019, I was prepared to remount my production here in the Stiemke Studio in March 2020. Just as we were preparing to go into rehearsals, of course everything around the world, especially in the live arts, including our theater, shut down due to COVID. Despite the arduous and numerous calendar changes required to bring the second leg of this production to fruition, we knew we couldn’t let this play go, so here we finally and gratefully are. This story of the challenges of parenting, the importance of finding a welcoming community, along with the power of art to feed body and soul, seem to resonate more deeply for us today than it did nearly two years ago, and as we continue to grind through a global pandemic. Since first encountering this play, I have always been drawn to the piece’s honest and empathetic look at fatherhood, and the complex and often uncomfortable intersections of masculinity, violence, and ethnicity that sit at the core of this particular story. As the father of a young daughter myself, and being brought up for many years as a young boy/man with elements of societal violence and bullying surrounding myself on a daily basis, many aspects of Antonio’s story, albeit rooted in radically different cultural contexts and settings, deeply resonated with me – as they might for many others too all over the world. We don’t often talk honestly about the trials of parenting, the sins of the fathers (and the mothers, too, for that matter) that fashion our own personalities, and how they are often tied up with our Western culture’s limited and sometimes traditional perceptions of respectability and social norms. What happens to your identity when you become a parent? What does it mean to be a parent? What does it mean to be a good parent? Antonio’s Song doesn’t shy away from those tough questions but leans into the truth and human emotion at the center of them. And woven intricately into that is also the complex story of an artist coming into his artistry, despite the obstacles the world throws his way. The way the play explores art’s power to shepherd us through the most trying of times speaks to us all, whether an art-maker or an art-lover. The Artistic teams at both Milwaukee Rep and CATF were intrigued and drawn to the myriad challenges this play offers, and after only having read the script one time wanted to be involved more. I also had the good fortune and opportunity early on to see Antonio read his play in a simple setting and found him to be extremely charismatic, witty, and moving, with a very distinctive style of storytelling that compelled me to be more involved when I was invited by both Antonio and Dael to direct this piece. We had also previously produced two of Dael Orlandersmith’s pieces, Yellowman and Until the Flood, and respected her work immensely, so much so that we commissioned her to write her next creation, New Age, which we will be presenting the world premiere of just a little later this coming spring. Working with this team of talented and dedicated multi-hyphenate artists has also been an absolute pleasure, as we collectively attempt to bring another distinctive new play to life in the Stiemke Studio, a venue that always endeavors to bring new works, new voices and unique styles of storytelling to an audience that loves and demands to be challenged. We all come from somewhere – but excavating that history and coming to terms with it, as Antonio and Dael’s show attempts to do, isn’t always easy, but I hope you too will find as much resonance, hope and need for further conversation around the subject matter in this piece as we did. Thank you for supporting new works at Milwaukee Rep. Cheers,

Antonio’s Song
