6American Song -

I am grateful to Joanna Murray-Smith for her courage and dedication to the project, and for finding an eloquent way through.

A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

I first approached eminent playwright Joanna Murray-Smith about writing this play for us in 2012, not too long before America and the world was shocked to its core by the fatal shootings of 20 children between the ages of six and seven, along with six adult staff mem bers, at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.  That particular incident, more so than many other similar events before and after, was so shockingly awful that it nearly stopped us in our tracks there and then.

The idea to make a play that looked squarely into the eye of the uniquely American issue of frequent mass shootings—which have become sadly “normal” for our country to experience at least once weekly in recent years—presented a huge dramaturgical challenge.  From the outset, our desire was to create a sincere, balanced conversation in the form of a play that did not devolve into didacticism and alienate its audience, and that did not seek to solve with pat, unsatisfy ing answers the problems that we face regarding gun violence in our nation: mental health issues, high suicide rates, and the myriad challenges of helping our children transition into well-rounded adults in an exponentially complicated and demanding world, among many others.  We set out to find a unique way to tell one story of this unfortunately familiar American way of life, through the eyes of a different kind of tragic character, one with whom we hope that each audience member can in some way identify.

To Milwaukee Repertory Theater Board of Trustees and all of our donors, who support and encourage us in taking artistic risks.  To The Rep staff who consistently deliver vital support and world-class work on our three stages.

In the week since I received a reminder from our Marketing Department to compose this note, America has experienced the random fatal shooting of six people in Kalamazoo, Michigan, by a man with no history of mental illness or violence, in between picking up Uber clients in his car, and three separate high school shooting incidents, along with hun dreds of other acts of violence that attract less column inches.  Historically, live theatre has been an extremely effective medium in provoking and facilitating positive debate on challenging subjects, and it is our sincere hope that we can keep you all together—not only for this 85-minute production, but as part of the larger, essential conversation to fol low, where you as an audience member will become the vital “Act II” of this production.

To the brilliant James DeVita for being brave enough to take on this challenge.

And one that we hope could perhaps prompt audience members to ask themselves and their neighbors, “How do we most successfully come together to collectively and meaningfully discuss some of the largest and most unpalatable issues that we face as a nation?”

Thank you, as always, for coming and for giving us your support.
