However, running a small theater company in Wisconsin is not without challenges. From learning the ropes regarding IRS paperwork, to the constant battle with the non-profit world’s least favorite ‘F-word’ (funding), the struggles have been all too real for Outskirts. But speed bumps aside, Albrechtson now has the help of a dedicated staff that shares his passion for edgy theater.
“Outskirts actually started as an assignment for a class I was taking,” Ryan Albrechtson, Producing Artistic Director of Outskirts Theatre, stated when asked about how his young theater company came into being.

“I felt that the word ‘edgy’ came with a negative connotation, especially to donors,” Albrechtson explained. While researching other words that meant edgy, he came across the word ‘outskirts’. “Living on the edge, breaking boundaries, moving away from what’s already being done – it just made sense.”
Outskirts certainly reflected a boundarybreaking mentality with their first production, Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead by Bert V. Royal. The play is a dark, unauthorized parody of Charlie Brown and the Peanuts characters,

While majoring in Theatre Arts at Carroll University, Albrechtson was encouraged to minor in Carroll’s reimagined Fine Arts Administration program. One of the first assignments required students to create their own fictional arts organization, complete with a name, logo, mission, bylaws, season selection, and other “Aboutdetails.halfway through the semester I sat down with my professor and asked her, ‘Since I’m doing all this work, why not realize it? Edgy theater, which is at the core of what Outskirts Theatre is all about and has been since the beginning.
Outskirts Theatre Adds Youthful Vibrancy to Milwaukee Theatre Scene
At age 22, Albrechtson may be one of the youngest (if not the youngest) artistic directors spearheading a theatrical production team for one of Milwaukee’s newest theatre companies. But the trajectory of Outskirts theatre is bold and bright with its youthful leadership at the helm.
And audiences – both young and old – continue to “We’ve certainly got a following, a lot of the same people filling our seats,” Albrechtson mentioned, indicating that the audiences do tend to skew younger more and more. “I think a big piece of that is the work we are doing. It tends to lend itself to a younger audience, and engage them in a way that maybe theatre hasn’t done before.”
Show elements Outskirts’ diverse audiences (and the artists working with them) have responded positively to and “Thereappreciate.isn’t
The younger audiences may also be drawn to the low ticket prices, midnight performances, free preshow pizza, drinks in the theatre, and other tactics Outskirts is utilizing to make the theatre a welcoming – and affordable – place to spend the evening. It is an exciting time for Outskirts, what with their gradual audience growth, a new mailing address and brand-new office space in downtown Waukesha, and their third season kicking off in February, which will include a love story, a drama, and their first-ever solo-produced musical. But after this season? “Expect aerial fabrics, new works, bigger musicals, puppets…whatever it is, it’ll be on edge.” Albrechtson concluded, with a mischievous grin. Outskirts begins their third season in February, Love Letters. The remainder of their season will also include The Amish Project and Bare: . a big niche for the fresh-out-of-college artist and we are trying to fill it. Our season selection also focuses on…shows that can really push our artists to new levels,” Albrechtson continued. “When the curtain opens, I want everyone in the theatre to gain something. On stage. Back stage. In the booth. In the house.”

Those arts groups that have been on the receiving end of those funds bring a cultural diversity to the city, offering ballet, musical theater, new works, opera, symphony music, and theatre education opportunities for the city’s youth. The vibrant arts community makes Southeastern Wisconsin a tourist destination, and a valuable perk for companies trying to recruit and retain talented employees.
“UPAF is proud to be a pillar in the Greater Milwaukee area for 50 years and counting. The wealth of performing arts venues provides endless opportunities for neighbors to come togeth er and share in a magical experience,” said Deanna Tillisch, UPAF’s President and CEO.
UPAF Turns 50: Setting the Stage Since 1967
In 1967, a group of community leaders rallied together with one mission in mind: to support the growing performing arts scene of Milwaukee and beyond. Fast-forward 50 years later, the nownamed United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) has helped raise and allocate over $300 million to Milwaukee arts groups.
UPAF has helped raise over $300 million for Milwaukee area performing arts groups.

8 - The Glass Menagerie NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR SPECIAL THANKS
I was in my teens when I first read and saw The Glass Menagerie. Then, quite a few years later, I had the opportunity and great fortune to actually direct this seminal work by Tennessee Williams. It was a 1998 co-production with the Derby Playhouse in England and the Theatre Royal Bath which subsequently toured throughout the UK starring the highly celebrated British actress Gwen Taylor in the role of Amanda. At that time, I absolutely recognized myself in the character of Amanda’s son Tom in his painful search for adventure, identity, freedom, absolution from familial guilt, and his longing for a life as a respected artist. In him, I recognized the fears and dreams of every young man who ever ventured to be way more than they should probably expect to be but ideally wanted to become. The play addressed me in a very personal way. Working on it again, nineteen years later, with another insanely talented cast and team of creatives, I am the father of a young daughter, and, for me, it is not so much a play about Tom anymore, but more about Amanda, whom I no longer see as the slightly comical, over domineering and sometimes monstrously behaved mother. It actually surprises me how much I now recognize myself in her tormented love for her children and the obsessive desire for the world to be kind to them in a way that it could not be for her. My bond with the play is still as strong as it used to be, but now I just empathize with the four (actually five) protagonists in a very different way. Surely the true sign of a great classic work is one that can not only endure the test of time, but has the ability to speak in a deep and personal way to the heart of each generation that simultaneously experiences it. On the first day of rehearsal for this production, I did point out to the cast and staff of The Rep, albeit slightly tongue in cheek, but nevertheless, quite accurately in the case of this great work, that this is the rare kind of play that, if you get it wrong, then it is absolutely not in any way the fault of the playwright. I have so enjoyed bringing this beautiful, harrowing and fragile play to life and sincerely hope that Mr. Williams would have approved. We hope too, that you, our loyal audience, very much enjoy the fruits of our Thanklabors.you so much, as always, for coming and supporting Milwaukee Repertory Theater.

To my mind, The Glass Menagerie is, without question, one of the key reasons as to how some random British guy fell completely in love with the very best of the great American playwrights, opening the door of abject appreciation to the likes of Williams, Miller, Odets, O’Neill etc., and then somehow ending up as Artistic Director for seven seasons (thus far) at one of the country’s great theater companies.
