DIRECTORS NOTES

The Royale -
The Royale is a powerful and unique play about a man’s quest for freedom, both inside and outside the ring. The Royale is inspired by and draws heavily from the real-life experiences of Jack Johnson, the first African-American heavyweight world champion. Playwright Marcos Ramirez uses the boxing ring and the societal landscape of the early 1900’s to take us on a harrowing journey through the conscious and sub-conscious mind of a fictitious character - Jay Johnson. Set in 1905-1910, deep in the midst of Jim Crow, it explores Jay’s struggles in his quest of becoming a Champion. The allegorical and poetic structure of the play takes us inside the ring where not a single punch will be thrown, at least not with fists, but with stomps, rhythms and the industrial sounds from world in which Jay resides. The Royale unapologetically tackles the most pervasive and divisive topics in America…the topics of race and racism while speaking to the unwavering perseverance of the human spirit.
The sport of boxing is lean and immediately theatrical. Two opponents, one outcome. That IS drama. But, what kind of pressure does it put on a human when you ask them to be brutal, cunning, charming, selfish and carry the weight of their race on their shoulders one minute and quiet, thoughtful and subservient the next?
Working on this project with this exceptional cast and creative team has been a memorable experience. I trust the conversation on how we can be a better America, a better community, a better person will continue long after this play ends tonight. Many thanks to Mark, Chad and the entire Milwaukee Rep staff for this opportunity and I greatly support The Rep’s endeavors to build community engagement through the arts. I hope you enjoy .
