TH

ANNIVER S A R Y SEASON

AS I ENTER MY FOURTH SEASON AS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, I cannot help but feel proud of the work that

The Rep has presented over the last three seasons. We have consistently presented you—our audience—with brave, challenging, entertaining, stimulating, thought-provoking, and vital works in a distinctive aesthetic that you can recognize as our own unique artistic signature. In announcing our 2013/14 Season, we maintain that tradition by presenting a slate of personalities and award winning productions that is—in a word—epic! In the Quadracci Powerhouse, we will explore the tumultuous final days of the life of Judy Garland and the dynamic birth of Superman. We will get a glimpse into the early 20th century world of Harry Houdini, Henry Ford, and Booker T. Washington, amongst other historical figures, in a tremendously moving musical that will be the largest and most ambitious production ever undertaken by The Rep. We will spend a side-splitting evening with a group of actors struggling through a quite dreadful—but hilarious—farce, and applaud a single virtuoso artist as he leads us through a blazingly contemporary retelling of a prophetic poem by Homer. A sexy, comic thriller in a backstage audition setting and a Confederate soldier’s complex relationship with his family’s newly-freed slaves are this season’s emotionally-powerful theatrical offerings in the Stiemke Studio. Both of these productions should not be missed at any cost. In the Stackner Cabaret, where you can enjoy excellent food and wonderful cocktails, we will showcase the soundtracks of America’s rich and musical history. We’ll be crooning to the classics of Tony Bennett, singing along with the revolutionary folk music of Woody Guthrie, harmonizing with the Doo-Wop groups of the 1950’s, and getting joyously high on the sounds of Fats Waller. It is our mission to continue producing the high-quality and beautifully distinctive work that has made us essential theater in Milwaukee, the Midwest, and throughout the country. I hope that you will consider either renewing as a subscriber, or becoming a new member of The Rep family. We very much look forward to seeing you at the theater in 2013/14 during our 60th Anniversary Season!

SEPTEMBER 17 – OCTOBER 27 QUADRACCI POWERHOUSE

Voted by Time Magazine as among the Top 100 Best Novels of the last century, this sweeping musical portrait of early 20th century America tells the powerful tale of a white, upper-middle class family, an AfricanAmerican couple, and an Eastern European immigrant escaping to America with his daughter, as they all confront the timeless contradictions of wealth, poverty, freedom, prejudice, hope, and despair in pursuit of the American Dream. Unfolding through the fiery rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley, and the vibrant klezmer of the Lower East Side, this vivid and unforgettable Tony-winning score bursts onto the stage “on the wheels of a dream” in what will be the largest and most MARK’S epic production ever staged at The Rep. TAKE

“With my arrival, The Rep instituted a tradition of producing powerful, thought provoking musicals in the Quadracci Powerhouse. This season’s offering is an extremely moving and uplifting adaptation of E.L. Doctorow’s well-loved and epic novel, Ragtime. This musical is guaranteed to live in your memory forever.”

Pure comedic genius that will make you laugh until you beg it to stop!

NOVEMBER 19 – DECEMBER 22 QUADRACCI POWERHOUSE

An incredible journey with roof-raising spirit!

JANUARY 3 – MARCH 9 STACKNER CABARET

Devised by by Michael Frayn

“A spectacularly funny, peerless backstage farce. This dizzy, well-known romp is a festival of delirium.” THE NEW YORK TI MES

Called “the funniest farce ever written” by the New York Post, Michael Frayn’s uproarious play-within-a-play follows the on-and off-stage antics of the members of a mediocre touring company as they blunder from an ominously bad dress rehearsal to a spectacularly disastrous performance. The perfect show for the Holiday Season, Noises Off is a hysterical romp packed full of a side-splitting collection of forgotten cues, missed connections, and backstage hilarity!

MARK’S TAKE

“Patrons have requested a comedy in the Quadracci Powerhouse—not just a play with some laughs, but an outright hilarious evening in the theater. Noises Off is one of the best comedies ever written, a contemporary classic that has had people rolling in the aisles for three decades now, and I can’t wait to share it with our audiences!” 8

“A fast-paced, richly sung and expertly played glimpse into the life of Woody Guthrie.” C H IC AG O C R IT IC

The original folk hero, Woody Guthrie, and his energetic, moving, and infectious melodies defined an American era of political expression, and transformed the folk ballad into a vehicle of social commentary and unity. With more than 25 songs— including classics like “This Land is Your Land,” “Pastures of Plenty,” and “The Ballad of Tom Joad”—this joyous, toe-tapping, and moving theatrical concert event celebrates the colorful life and rich musical legacy of America’s greatest troubadour.

MARK’S TAKE

“After seeing this beautifully-crafted piece in Chicago, I knew that we had to bring it to Milwaukee. Even though Woody Guthrie wrote songs responding to the people and events of a particular period, like any other pieces of great art, his songs still rouse the heart, capture the imagination, and resonate just as strongly today as when they were first written—true classics!” 9

The hottest and sexiest date night in Milwaukee— Venus simply sizzles! by David Ives

“Seriously smart and very funny!” THE NEW YORK TI MES

SEPTEMBER 25 – NOVEMBER 3 STIEMKE STUDIO

Meet Thomas—a demanding playwright and director desperate for the perfect actress for his new stage adaptation of a classic erotic novel. Meet Vanda—an unusually talented young actress lusting after the leading role in the show. Through the comic genius of playwright David Ives, their late-night encounter in a deserted audition studio evolves from banal routine into a sizzling battle of the sexes blending love, libido, and literature that will keep you wondering to the very end just who, exactly, is on top.

MARK’S TAKE

“Sexy, thrilling, comic, mysterious, and a great vehicle for two extraordinary actors, Venus in Fur immediately captivated me on the page when I first read it—and then had me truly spellbound when I saw it on Broadway. I love that the play encourages audience members to use their imaginations a bit, and I think it will be an absolutely electric evening in the Stiemke!” 6

OCTOBER 25 – DECEMBER 29 STACKNER CABARET

On a stormy night in the 1960s, four eager singers known as “The Plaids”—Sparky, Jinx, Frankie, and Smudge—are killed in a car crash on the way to their first big gig. In 2013, they get one chance to return from the afterlife and bop-shoo-bop their way through classic hits like “Love is a Many Splendored Thing,” “Three Coins in the Fountain,” “Sixteen Tons,” and many more. You’ll delight in their zany, boyish squabbles and charmingly outlandish choreography as they pay an affectionate homage to the close-harmony male singing groups of the 1950s, and fulfill their dreams by performing the show that never was.

“Forever Plaid is a show that might as well have been written for the Stackner Cabaret—it’s the kind of thing that we do best in that wonderfully close space. It’s entertaining, it’s funny, it’s moving, and with its great songs in the style of the male harmony groups of the 1950s, it’s the perfect holiday season family outing to enjoy after dinner and over a cocktail!” 7

A gripping, award winning, post-Civil War drama.

“…Sensational in every sense of the word.” T H E N E W YO R K T I M ES

Explosive acting and classic songs bring down the house in this critically-acclaimed exploration of Judy Garland’s infamous 1968 London comeback. Named in Time Magazine’s “Top Ten” List and called “electrifying” by The New York Times, this savagely funny and emotionally-searing play finds the once-glittering starlet sparring with her new fiancé, her devoted accompanist, and her personal demons. Filled with Garland’s legendary tenacity, razor-sharp wit, and once-in-a-generation voice, this is a piece of theater truly befitting the late, great songstress who took us “over the rainbow.”

MARK’S TAKE

“A pre-eminent singer and movie star, Judy Garland is a seminal figure in American entertainment and a cultural icon, who still makes a huge impact across generations, even over forty years after her death. Rainbow—not a musical, but a play with some classic songs—offers the opportunity for a truly tour-de-force performance that explores the joy and the heartbreak that sum up Judy’s life so well.” 10

“Filled with fine characterization and unexpected moments of humor.” T HE N E W YOR K T I M E S

The Civil War has ended, but for some, the struggle has just begun. A Jewish Confederate soldier, wounded in war, has returned from the battlefield to find that his family has fled. The only remaining household members are two former slaves, who have been raised by his family as Jews. Over a celebratory feast, family history is uncovered and dark secrets are revealed, forcing the men to come to terms with the sordid legacies of slavery and war that threaten each of their future freedoms.

MARK’S TAKE

“My first experience with The Whipping Man was to be viscerally struck by the raw power of its theatricality. A harrowing story about the conclusion of the Civil War, it offers a uniquely dramatic and compelling take on the Jewish faith, the abolition of slavery, and a particularly important period in American history that still evokes passionate feelings today.”

I am excited to build, with my wonderful creative team, a remarkable staging of this amazing play that will equally appeal to theater-lovers and lovers of comic books and superheroes.” 14
