Under the leadership of Artistic Director Mark Clements and Executive Director Chad Bauman, Milwaukee Rep creates world-class theater experiences for our audiences and uses education and civic engagement to bring diverse people together for healthy and respectful dialogue around important issues facing us today. Just like Milwaukee, we’re not what people usually expect. We’re more diverse. More impactful. More modern. From the stage to the streets, the things we do, we do to bring out the best in our region. Our work is representative of Milwaukee’s rich diversity as we aim to be a theater that is welcoming and inspirational to all.

A Note From

Artistic Director Mark Clements Returning to live theater after almost two years away is a bittersweet and emotional experience – even more so as we bring back to the stage our full Pabst Theater production of A Christmas Carol. In 2020, we celebrated our 45th year of producing this show, making our production the secondlongest, continuously running professional production in the US. While in 2020, we were grateful to share art and comfort with you in your homes with our heartwarming production of Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, we’ve thoroughly missed gathering larger groups of artists and audiences together in person to bring this story to life. Now, we finally return to the Pabst Theater live, with this full ensemble adaptation and find this classic story of redemption and kindness resonating in new and powerful ways. Both on and off stage, community remains at the heart of A Christmas Carol. The story’s main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, has spent the majority of his life pushing people away, isolating himself, and keeping people at a (six-foot) distance. However, over the course of this beloved story, he comes to realize the joy, comfort, and security that comes with being part of something much larger than himself. The past two years of the pandemic have separated us all in myriad ways, removing us from our loved ones, some from our jobs (particularly in the entertainment industry), and the daily joys in which we share. One of those joys is live theater and for many that includes the long-standing family tradition of attending A Christmas Carol. Coming back together for this play is a radical and restorative occasion. Despite the challenges we have all faced over the past months, we find ourselves returning stronger than ever, with a renewed understanding of the story’s central message for us to be our most generous, thoughtful, and loving selves not just on holidays, but every day of the year. Another one of the great joys of returning to this story this year is the people who come along with it. We’re thrilled that Lee E. Ernst is returning to the role of Scrooge this season, and that we are welcoming back many much-missed folks, and introducing some new faces onto the stage too. And of course, we are delighted to welcome back YOU, our dear and loyal audience members, who fill the Pabst Theater each night, helping to spread the magic and joy of the story’s message long after you leave the theater. For some of you, this will be a return to a beloved tradition after years away. For others, it may be your first time seeing the show. For all of you, we hope that gathering once again with loved ones allows you to experience the rejuvenating power and collective joy of theater and community. As Dickens wrote so appositely (it would appear) in A Christmas Carol: “It is a fair, even-handed, noble adjustment of things, that while there is infection in disease and sorrow, there is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.” I wish you and yours a merry and joyful holiday season and health and prosperity for the new year.

After a year away, Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s artists and staff are thrilled to welcome you back for A Christmas Carol!

As we continue to rebound from the pandemic, we need your help to come back stronger than ever and ensure this holiday classic endures for generations to come. Please consider making a donation to Milwaukee Rep this holiday season!

The Comeback

Challenge The Four-Four Foundation, David & Camille Kundert, and Tom & Molly Duffey will match every new or increased gift dollar for dollar up to $200,000. But hurry! All gifts must be received by December 31, 2021 to count toward the challenge. When you give, you will double your impact on the artists and staff that make this production so memorable year after year.

Join 5,000 of your fellow theater-lovers and make your gift today!
