Milwaukee Rep 2021/22 Season

A Note From

Artistic Director Mark Clements Welcome Friends, Wisconsinites, Countrymen! If we took a poll of the audience right now, I would bet good money that everyone in the room has heard at least one Beatles song before, has encountered at least one Shakespeare play before, and probably in that order too, but perhaps, this is the first time you’re seeing and hearing them simultaneously? Music has always been an integral part of Shakespeare’s plays but how did this particular combination come about? After creating and directing a successful production of Love’s Labour’s Lost with jazz music for Canadian theatre company Bard on the Beach in 2015, director Daryl Cloran was encouraged to see if he could combine The Beatles music with As You Like It. Of the endeavor, Daryl says: “I listened to all of the Beatles albums and read all of their lyrics and studied As You Like It, and I quickly found all kinds of incredible connections. There are so many Beatles songs that feel like they were written specifically for the play. For instance, when Jaques tells the Duke, “A fool, a fool, I met a fool i’ th’ forest!” of course the next thing she does is sing “Fool on the Hill”! I wrote an outline showing where all the different songs would fit, and describing how we would set the play in the 1960s, and how we would have a fantastic wrestling pre-show. We programmed the show and it turned out to be the best-selling production in the 30-year history of Bard on the Beach. And since then it has played in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Chicago, and now here in Milwaukee!” So, how exactly did it come all the way from Canada to Milwaukee? Well, I’ve always had a passion to bring The Beatles music to the stage in some shape or form. Their music is such an enormous part of our cross-generational cultural consciousness, and is arguably the most seminal popular music catalogue of all time. A few years ago, I was briefly working on creating a new stage musical in Europe, which eventually did not come to fruition for me, but as my awareness at the time was heighted towards this music, I happened to stumble upon a production that Bard on the Beach were doing, and then subsequently discovered that our friends at Chicago Shakespeare Theater were going to do as a new production. I asked to see the script and was really taken by how Daryl had skillfully combined The Beatles songs with Shakespeare’s classic text without diluting the genius of either art form. Hence, our co-collaboration with Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Daryl and his creative team was born. As You Like It is the first iteration of our multi-year Classics Initiative, generously sponsored by The Lynde & Harry Bradley Foundation. We wanted to kick off the initiative with something familiar – Shakespeare – but a play maybe you haven’t seen before, presented in an innovative form that captures the joy and community of the story. Whenever we bring a classic to the stage, we want to make sure it resonates for a contemporary audience, and feels relevant and appropriate to our times, just in the way that Shakespeare originally wrote for his audiences, who yearned for engaging, populist storytelling. Whether you came today because you’re a Shakespeare buff or because you’re a Beatles diehard, there’s a little something for everyone in this piece. In this crazy and divisive world we’re living in, we hope you sit in the theater today and have a joyous fun time watching As You Like It – and remember, “All you need is love.” Cheers!
