by Rebecca Gilman JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 12 “A compelling and compassionate portrait of flawed people making impossible choices.” -- Chicago Reader www.r-t-w.com | 414.291.7800 Luna Gale Luna Gale

Our research for this play has been vast, as it speaks directly to the context of the reality in which we live. I’ve learned much about different religions, about the plight of Muslim Americans since 9/11, about the history of imperialism in third-world countries and how it affects all of us today, about how different sectors of the population respond to current events, and about leaders who seek to create divisions instead of embrace complexities.

power of theater can sometimes converge with real-life events in such a way that we might think we’re witnessing a documentary, a slice of life, but we’re not. Theater is not a documentary, and many plays are not bound by strict realism. A work of art does not have to take political sides, does not need to represent a whole culture, it is not just an exposition of facts. Theater’s roots lie in poetic language, choral and musical delivery, in pursuing epic exchanges of ideas in order to invite us to a common experience where we are provoked together and we can feel together. Contemporary plays look to provoke audiences much in the way the Greeks did.

8 - Disgraced NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Disgraced asks poignant questions about our contemporary world and the context in which we’re presenting the play has continued to shift from the moment I was asked to direct it. Major events have transpired, and the questions have become more vital and Theurgent.imaginative

All of this said, Disgraced, this imaginative work of art, is in direct conversation with current global dynamics, and that is of tremendous value. The play presents human beings who are themselves living in a confusing world, wrestling with their identities as Americans, with their ancestral roots and with a culture in which, sadly, surveillance and violence have become all too familiar. These characters are not heroes; they are complex people who often harbor conflicting points of view. In the same way, our world is not simple, not easy, and true understanding will only derive from our willingness to ask hard questions, embrace contradictions and empathize with those who differ from us.

17Disgracededucation, and professional training, dedicated to producing the great works of dramatic literature and to cultivating the next generation of theater artists. Under the leadership of Haj, the Guthrie produces a mix of classic and contemporary plays on three stages, and continues to set a national standard for excellence in theatrical production and performance. In 2006, the Guthrie opened its new home on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. Designed by Pritzker Prizewinning architect Jean Nouvel, the Guthrie Theater houses three state-of-the-art stages, production facilities, classrooms, full-service restaurants and dramatic public lobbies.

Tony Award-winning McCarter Theatre Center is one of America’s leading regional theaters and is the only organization in this country that is a professional producing theater and simultaneously a presenter of major performing artists. World premiere plays include Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (2013 Tony Award - Best Play), Miss Witherspoon; The Brother/Sister Plays; Me, Myself & I; Having Our Say; The Convert; and Crowns. Other plays include Broadway productions of Translations; Anna in the Tropics (Pulitzer Prize); and Electra. McCarter is a presenter of world renowned artists such as Lang Lang, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Wynton Marsalis, David Sedaris and many others. Their education/outreach efforts serve tens of thousands through student matinees, in-school residencies, adult education classes, and more. McCarter is supported by contributions from Princeton University, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, many corporations and foundations and from over 3,000 individuals.
