The groundbreaking pop-culture musical sensation is reimagined in a new production.
Myth and spectacle combine in a fresh reinvention of The Who’s exhilarating 1969 rock concept album, Tommy—including the unforgettable anthems
“I’m Free,” “See Me, Feel Me,” “Sensation” and “Pinball Wizard.” After witnessing his father shoot his rival, the young Tommy Walker is lost in the universe, endlessly and obsessively staring into the mirror. An innate knack for pinball catapults him from reticent adolescent to celebrity savior.

8 Milwaukee Rep 2022/23 Season
Artistic Director Mark Clements A Note From
My first experience with God of Carnage in 2008 was a little unexpected. I saw it on opening night of its London West-End premiere, and towards the end of the play the power went out in the theater. In a very “the show must go on” kind of moment, the cast continued and performed the rest of the piece. Needless to say, even in the working light of the Gielgud Theatre, the show was a hit; speaking directly to writer Yasmina Reza’s and translator Christopher Hampton’s incredible dramaturgical skills, not to mention a cast that involved some of my favorite actors, including Ralph Fiennes, Ken Stott and Janet McTeer. I’ve seen the show a couple more times since, including a very starry Broadway version with James Gandolfini and Jeff Daniels. I enjoyed them immensely, and always thought it would be a perfect play for Milwaukee Rep to produce at some point. In fact, it’s been on our “todo list” since 2010, when I first joined Milwaukee Rep as Artistic Director. Like many excellent plays that stand the test of time and multiple viewings/renditions, we as practitioners and audience members also evolve with those works and are able to view them from different perspectives fashioned by our life experience. This is true of myself with God of Carnage, as I now have a sixth-grade child of my own, boy, does this show hit home in an entirely different way!
There’s something deliciously fun about watching cultured, composed adults regress to their most childish selves over the course of a night, especially when someone other than themselves deemed to be slighting their own “perfect” offspring. But God of Carnage feels especially poignant to us in 2023 as many “enlightened” souls strive to be consciously sensitive and woke. But how much of that is performative? What will it take for true colors to come out? As we all strive to listen to our better angels, God of Carnage uncompromisingly captures the complexity, frailty and absurdity of human nature.
Underneath the masks these characters wear is also something deeply authentic. God of Carnage explores the way family bonds, and especially our love for our children, has the power to reduce us to our most primal selves. What parts of ourselves, what values, what rules of civility are we willing to compromise–maybe even give up entirely–in order to protect the ones we love?
It’s a delicate balance to answer the aforementioned questions of a piece like this; while at the same time extrapolate all the humor, rawness, and heart in a truthful, grounded way. Therefore, we’re excited to welcome back native Wisconsinite Ryan Quinn to helm our production, who was last at Milwaukee Rep directing another hilarious family drama, Dad’s Season Tickets, in the Stackner Cabaret. Our talented four-person cast is made up of halffamiliar faces to Milwaukee Rep and half newcomers, and we’re grateful to have all of them here bringing this now-regarded, contemporary classic to life.
Thanks for joining us for another dynamic year of performances in the Quadracci Powerhouse, and we look forward (please) to seeing you back here for the 2023/24 Season after a beautiful summer (also PLEASE!).
Cheers,
GOD OF CARNAGE 9
