Panel Discussions:

Which means that, in many of my plays, I’ve avoided the latest technology. Theater is theater because you’re in a room with a bunch of other people, collectively breathing, shifting in your seats, listening to a story unfold. So for me, putting screens onstage has always seemed near impossible to pull off. That vacant, internal look we all get when reading an email on our phones while trying to listen to a conversation? Or texting under the dinner table and pretending that the beating-hearted human in front of us is holding our attention? This is barely acceptable social behavior, and certainly not an entertaining play. Yet, we can’t ignore it. Like it or not (most times I don’t), technology touches every part of our lives. So how can a world that has become so internal and disconnected accomplish that simple act of connection for which we watch plays?

Community Conversations is part of The Rep’s Mpact program supported by: The Herzfeld Foundation, The Lubar Family Fund for Engagement and Education and Community Activities:

I’ve spent the better part of my life being suspicious of technology. Admittedly, I have no innate knack for it, so holding technological advances at arms length was never too difficult for me. Lack of understanding and a vague distrust of it has kept me in the dark about cutting edge societal advancements. To me, campfire tales have always made more sense than blog articles. I like physical books. I’m that guy.

George Brant solves this problem so elegantly. In a story where technology takes a front seat, determines the outcome of major moments, and even acts as a second character, he’s put a woman in front of us to tell a story. Her perspective is specific, and all but alien to us civilians (although sometimes frighteningly recognizable). But ultimately, this play lets us be that breathing, shifting, eagerly listening group of people here to experience someone’s story. We get to sit in a room together and listen to someone else tell their tale, which includes screens of all kinds but which is about something more universal. A campfire story with cutting-edge technology. I’ve been delighted to work on it.

LauraEnjoy, Braza Director We are thrilled to have so many partners working with us on Grounded. Please join us in thanking them for their amazing work and support to make this production and the surrounding events around the production possible.
