Directed by Jennifer Chang

Milwaukee Rep is the largest performing arts organization in Wisconsin, typically welcoming 300,000 people at 700 performances of 14 productions a season at the Associated Bank Theater Center featuring three unique performance venues – the Quadracci Powerhouse (720 seats), Stiemke Studio (205 seats) and Stackner Cabaret (186 seats). For over six decades, Milwaukee Rep has been a centerpiece of Milwaukee’s vibrant arts and cultural scene with productions ranging from Broadway musicals to Shakespeare to American Classics and New Works that are entertaining, inclusive and impactful.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Mark Clements and Executive Director Chad Bauman , Milwaukee Rep creates world-class theater experiences for our audiences and uses education and civic engagement to bring diverse people together for healthy and respectful dialogue around important issues facing us today.

Just like Milwaukee, we’re not what people usually expect. We’re more diverse. More impactful. More modern. From the stage to the streets, the things we do, we do to bring out the best in our region. Our work is representative of Milwaukee’s rich diversity as we aim to be a theater that is welcoming and inspirational to all.

A Note From

Artistic Director Mark Clements

It should come as no surprise that our team at Milwaukee Rep reads a LOT of plays throughout the year. But I will say that it’s fairly rare for our team to read a play in its very first draft and then know instantly that not only do we all love it, but we want to produce it as soon as possible! That’s exactly what happened with The Heart Sellers.

Back in 2017, we produced Lloyd Suh’s The Chinese Lady in the Stiemke Studio as a “second production” in our John (Jack) D. Lewis New Play Development Program, where Lloyd worked with us to refine the production from knowledge attained from its first. The show enthralled and really captivated our audiences, we immediately knew we wanted to continue working with this talented playwright. When we commissioned Lloyd and asked what ideas he had for his next play; he presented the outline of The Heart Sellers, an intimate two-hander set in the 70s during an American holiday, that explored friendship and the “American Dream.” Then the pandemic hit.

The COVID-19 pandemic in many ways helped birth the version of The Heart Sellers you will see today. The script was written and developed in several Zoom readings and workshops during the height of the crisis. And though the kernel of the play’s idea was formed before 2020, the themes of loneliness, community, generosity, and finding friendship during the most turbulent time of your life were deepened during these past few years. They continue to resonate in more immediate and personal ways today.

Just as The Chinese Lady introduced us to a fantastic new playwright, The Heart Sellers is allowing us to bring on some incredible new artists to the Milwaukee Rep fold. We’re especially delighted to have acclaimed, LA-based director Jennifer Chang directing this World Premiere amid a top-tier cast and creative team.

Our New Play Development Program amongst many imperatives strives to produce work that features unheard voices, that speak to the present moment; that delights, challenges, and broadens the horizons of its richly diverse audiences. The Heart Sellers checks all these boxes. As we continue to navigate the lasting effects of the pandemic, learn to coexist with its new “norms,” or try to define the “American Dream.” We hope that all of you find solace, redemption, and hope in this story of resilience and friendship.

Thank you for your continued support of new work and living playwrights!

#WeRepMilwaukee THE HEART SELLERS 23
24 Milwaukee Rep 2022/23 Season www.MilwaukeeRep.com | 414-290-5376 YOUR GIFT. THEIR VOICES. The Next Narrative™ Monologue Competition is a national program for high school students that celebrates the diversity of our city while uplifting the work of exceptional, contemporary Black playwrights. By studying and performing monologues, students learn to express themselves and build self-confidence through theater. When you donate to Milwaukee Rep, you bring together students from across the city and give them a chance to celebrate the power of theater—and their own voices.

The following list represents organizations and individuals who have made a cumulative contribution of $500 or more between November 5, 2021 and January 5, 2023. For a complete list of all our supporters, please visit www.MilwaukeeRep.com.
