The goal of this show has always been to respectfully honor this story that still fascinates and resonates with multiple generations 110 years-on: to reflect on the lives lost and to celebrate the survivors, who made it by literally clinging on to life in the icy Atlantic waters before being plucked out, while many around them perished. As it was so with 3rd-Class passenger, and survivor, David Vartanian, whose greatgranddaughter Melissa, is Milwaukee Rep’s current Managing Director. We’ve gone on a journey of epic proportions with this show and I feel extremely grateful to have the opportunity to be able to have this shared experience with such a wonderful company of actors and our audiences, who have stayed for the ride. Whether you’re seeing this show again or waiting to finally use those tickets from 2019, we thank you for your dedication to the work and welcome you to experience our production that we are so proud of.
Artistic Director Mark Clements A Note From
Thanks for coming and “Sail on Big Ship Titanic ”!
TITANIC THE MUSICAL 17
It’s rare that one gets a second chance at tackling a show like this, and I’m thrilled to dive back into the world of this musical with so many of the original terrific Milwaukee Rep cast and creative team members returning, who truly made this show what it became. But I’m equally excited and grateful for the new faces in the cast who have brought some extraordinary artistry and fresh perspective to this renewed production.
Our decision to bring this show back to kick-off our dynamic 2022/23 Season was a no-brainer. On top of it being a universally acclaimed Rep production that is still in high demand from audiences, the themes of resilience in the face of tragedy and rising out of the ashes could not be more resonant. We definitely had unfinished business with this production, and so we leapt at the opportunity when it arose to complete what we started–for both ourselves and our dedicated audiences.
Milwaukee Rep’s Titanic: The Musical has been a long time in the making. Since 2019, from production conception, in fact, we’ve been working tirelessly to bring this show to life, and after coming out the other side of a global pandemic that waylaid us for over eighteen months, we finally got to present Titanic on our Quadracci Powerhouse mainstage. We created a show everyone–from cast and staff to donors and audiences–were proud of and excited about. We were virtually sold out for the last two weeks of our run back in April of this year, when the pandemic struck again, and we were forced to close early. While heartbroken at the turn of events, we saw an opportunity to make sure that this important story and incredible production got its due.

Chad Bauman Executive Director
Now in his ninth season at Milwaukee Rep, under Chad’s guidance the theater has grown significantly from a $9M to $14M organization. He’s completed two capital campaigns, one to remodel and expand the Stackner Cabaret and the other to build the endowment, launch the John (Jack) D. Lewis New Play Development Program, create a new A Christmas Carol and deepen the theater’s community engagement programs. Through his efforts, the theater has been awarded UPAF’s Good Steward Award six times and became the only performing arts organization in Wisconsin with a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator. Previously he was the Associate Executive Director at Arena Stage in Washington, DC, where he was instrumental in opening the Mead Center for American Theater, a 200,000 square feet, performing arts complex dedicated to American voices and playwrights. While at Arena Stage, he worked on the Broadway transfers of Next to Normal (Pulitzer Prize; Tony Award), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Tony Award), Wishful Drinking starring Carrie Fisher, in addition to the world premieres of Marcus Gardley’s Every Tongue Confess starring Phylicia Rashad and Red Hot Patriot starring Kathleen Turner. He has been named to Milwaukee Business Journal’s Top 40 under 40 and a “Friend of the Hispanic Community” by the United Community Center. He currently serves as the President of the Milwaukee Arts Partners, Vice President of the Board of Pathways High School, Treasurer of Imagine MKE and Coordinator for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion for AFS Student Exchange Programs. Bauman is a graduate of Harvard Business School’s Strategic Perspectives in Non-Profit Management program with a Master of Fine Arts in producing from the CalArts. He and his husband Justin live in Whitefish Bay.

Johnny began his performing career in his native Miami, Florida honing his skills as a touring, studio and jazz musician. He has performed throughout the United States, Europe and South America. He is the leader of The Johnny Padilla Quartet, which can be heard on his latest recording, “Bright Morning.”
Johnny Padilla Reeds
Out-of-control puppets, Shakespearean comedy and some “very creative” imaginations threaten to transform this holy night into a Waiting for Guffman-esque fiasco.
