A Note From
Artistic Director Mark Clements This show almost didn’t happen. Toni Stone was part of our season announcement in the spring of 2020, and when the pandemic hit everything, including this play, fell into uncertainty. Time and countless conversations passed and through it all we held on to this play. We found the aspects of the story that we were drawn to two years ago—honoring our shared US history, uplifting diverse voices and bringing powerful and entertaining stories to the stage—resonated even more deeply with us now. Many pieces of art were fatalities to the pandemic; we vowed to not let Toni Stone be one of them. I suspect Marcenia “Toni” Stone might not be a household name to most of our audience members, though it should be. She was a true trailblazer for women and athletes of color, civil rights and anyone fighting for their passions and beliefs in the face of adversity. History, unfortunately, has forgotten many of the incredible Black athletes who were part of the Negro Leagues, some of whom went on to break the color line and play on desegregated MLB teams. In a present day fraught with divide, this play unearths a history not too long past, reminding us of how far we’ve come—and how far we have yet to go—in the pursuit of equity, inclusion and justice. In telling Toni’s story, we’re reminded that the past, while heavy and challenging, can also be incredibly beautiful. We’re equally excited for you to see the play’s depiction of the joy and theatricality of baseball. America’s favorite pastime is a sport that captures both the meditative tension of a chess game and the explosive physical poetry of the best choreographed dances. Few sports are as suited for the stage as baseball. As we continue to emphasize the importance of community at this time, we are also thrilled that we get to produce this play as a co-production with the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. The joy of collaboration during a time of isolation cannot be overstated. We’re grateful to build the momentum and power of this show in Milwaukee and then share it with audiences in Georgia. Producing Toni Stone has also allowed us to bring many new artists into our theater community—including director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden—who are dedicated to honoring Toni’s and the Negro Leagues’ stories. We have all faced an incredible amount of uncertainty and division in the past two years. Toni’s trailblazing spirit speaks to the importance of pushing forward towards progress, leading with passion and conviction, and never letting the pressures of society keep you from speaking your truth. If you came here not knowing Toni Stone’s name or about the Negro Leagues, I hope you will leave with a renewed appreciation for this important part of US history and your hearts thrilled by the intersection of athleticism and artistry onstage. Thank you for joining us, enjoy the show – and, bringing new theatrical meaning to the phrase, “play ball!” Cheers,
