A Note From

Artistic Director Mark Clements

One of the greatest passions and priorities of my tenure and of Milwaukee Rep’s mission is the inclusion, incubation, and production of new work –and Wife of a Salesman is the perfect example of this e ort.

A few years ago, I was at the Contemporary American Theater Festival in West Virginia, at the start of a process on Antonio’s Song. I saw a new play at the festival called The Niceties, by up-and-coming young playwright Eleanor Burgess. Immediately, I knew we needed to produce it and chased hard after it, nally securing it for our 2019/20 Season. It played to great acclaim. Before The Niceties even opened, I knew we wanted to continue working with Eleanor and be part of whatever project she developed next. In 2018, we asked Eleanor to pitch us several ideas, and the pitch for Wife of a Salesman rose to the top. When we found out that Writers Theatre in Glencoe, IL was also hoping to commission Eleanor and was excited about Wife of a Salesman, we embarked on our rst ever co-commission. The partnership has been incredibly fruitful, and we have spent the past couple of years developing this work together, giving Eleanor twice the resources and twice the opportunity to debut her play to the world.

As with many new plays, Wife of a Salesman has been several years in the making, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to nally premier it on our stages. Several major life changes have happened since the original idea was formed–including a global pandemic and the birth of Eleanor’s two children! These events have had an impact, both minor and profound, on the shape the play has taken today. We’re thrilled to nally have esteemed director Marti Lyons working with us, heading up a phenomenally talented cast and creative team who will bring this play to life in the intimate Stiemke Studio.

It takes a strong, passionate writer to tackle the theatrical canon and reshape it through a new lens for contemporary audiences. Eleanor’s play is a funny, thoughtful response to and reclamation of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. Her play explores themes of the American Dream, women’s roles in society then and now, and what agency, if any, we have to write and rewrite the stories of our own lives. The classics have been named so because they are celebrated for their craft and remembered for their continued impact on our current times. But it is also critical we continue to ask: Who has been left out of these stories? Why? And what can we do to change that? Wife of a Salesman is one way.

New plays are an opportunity to uplift unheard voices, unearth untold stories, and breathe fresh life into old tales. While some of you may be coming into this play as Miller a cionados, we hope you’ll be surprised and challenged by Wife of a Salesman’s “variation on a theme,” and come away looking at Miller–and perhaps your own world–through new eyes.

As always, thank you for your support of living writers and their stories. This work wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the continued passion of audience members like you.

Cheers,

WIFE OF A SALESMAN 11

Myths About

PLANNED

GiViNG

MYTH 1:

I can only make a planned gift through an estate plan or will.

MYTH 2:

Planned gifts are only for the wealthy.

MYTH 3:

Estate planning is only about distributing my assets.

You can select Milwaukee Rep as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy, retirement plan, or charitable gift annuity. This means that anyone can make a planned gift.

There is no minimum amount required for a planned gift. In fact, you may even be able to make a bigger impact than you thought possible when you make a planned gift.

Estate planning is an opportunity to reflect your values, secure your legacy, and ensure the things you are passionate about –like Milwaukee Rep – are sustained.

Individuals who make planned gifts to Milwaukee Rep are recognized as members of our Limelight Legacy Society.

If you have already selected Milwaukee Rep to receive a planned gift or would like to learn more, contact Director of Major and Planned Giving Alli Engelsma-Mosser at 414-290-5366
