NOVEMBER 9 – DECEMBER 5, 2021 | QUADRACCI POWERHOUSE

#WeRepMilwaukee Milwaukee Rep is the largest performing arts organization in Wisconsin, typically welcoming 300,000 people at 700 performances of 14 productions a season at the Patty & Jay Baker Theater Complex featuring three unique performance venues – the Quadracci Powerhouse (720 seats), Stiemke Studio (205 seats) and Stackner Cabaret (186 seats). For over six decades, Milwaukee Rep has been a centerpiece of Milwaukee’s vibrant arts and cultural scene with productions ranging from Broadway musicals to Shakespeare to American Classics and New Works that are entertaining, inclusive and impactful. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Mark Clements and Executive Director Chad Bauman, Milwaukee Rep creates world-class theater experiences for our audiences and uses education and civic engagement to bring diverse people together for healthy and respectful dialogue around important issues facing us today. Just like Milwaukee, we’re not what people usually expect. We’re more diverse. More impactful. More modern. From the stage to the streets, the things we do, we do to bring out the best in our region. Our work is representative of Milwaukee’s rich diversity as we aim to be a theater that is welcoming and inspirational to all.

A Note From

Artistic Director Mark Clements Needless to say, this 2021/22 Season feels momentous in many ways, most strongly in that we are returning to producing a full season after having our stages more or less dark for eighteen months. As we were considering what shows we wanted to welcome audiences back with, we were drawn to a title we’ve been considering for many years now: Steel Magnolias. Many of you may be familiar with Steel Magnolias from the beloved, star-studded movie adaptations of the same name. Or perhaps you just know it’s a story about a bunch of women in a beauty salon and have heard one of its most famous quotes – “I’d rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special.” While it perhaps feels like a subtler way to kick off our Quadracci Powerhouse season compared to some of our big musicals in the past (and don’t worry—that’s coming later this season), like the metaphor of the “steel magnolia,” this show tells a much more powerful story than perhaps it first appears on the surface. We were drawn to the story of Steel Magnolias by the women at the center of their moving, inspiring, intergenerational friendship. They are true “steel magnolias,” equal parts resilient, fierce, tender, and vulnerable. Their non-stop banter, support (and playful criticism) of each other’s choices, and zest for life is central to the heart of the story—and why it has in turn claimed the hearts of so many audiences in previous decades. Though the laughs come quick and easy in this play, like the motif in the title, the story also explores the fragility of life and the ways people face and reckon with that fragility. Over the past nearly two years of the pandemic our world has faced a similar reckoning on big and small scales. But what we—and the characters in the play—have found is that you can weather any storm with the right people by your side. The restorative powers of both community and communal storytelling help us not just to survive but thrive too, and speak to our excitement in the present moment as we welcome back staff, artists, and audiences alike safely to our theater. We’re thrilled to have Artistic Producer Laura Braza directing this piece and to be welcoming (back) faces new and old, both onstage and off, to bring this show to life. And, of course, theater would be nothing without its audiences, and the energy and support you all bring us every night. Thank you for that! Whether you’re coming here as a diehard Steel Magnolias fan or a complete newbie, we welcome you to Milwaukee Rep, and hope within this theater company you feel the safety and freedom to laugh, cry, let your hair down (literally or figuratively), and find community in sharing this space with fellow theater-goers after a very long time away. We look forward to bringing you this show and plenty more powerful, life-affirming and redemptive productions on all of our stages throughout our 2021/22 Season! Onwards and Upwards Friends!

CREATIVE TEAM Robert Harling Playwright Mr. Harling made his directorial debut with “The Evening Star” for Paramount, which he also wrote for the screen based on Larry McMurty’s novel. “The Evening Star” reunited Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson and co-stars Juliette Lewis, Bill Paxton, Scott Wolf, Miranda Richardson and Marion Ross. “The Evening Star” is the continuation of one of the most beloved and acclaimed movies of our time, “Terms of Endearment.” Before launching a successful stage and screenwriting career, Robert graduated from Tulane University School of Law, but instead of taking the bar exam, he opted to become an actor in New York. After years of productive work as an actor in voiceovers and commercials, Harling was inspired to write the highly acclaimed stage play Steel Magnolias, which was based on events from his personal life. Steel Magnolias continues to thrive in theatrical productions throughout the world. Immediately bridging a career from stage to screen, Harling adapted his original play into the popular film of the same title, which starred Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton and Daryl Hannah. Over the years, Mr. Harling has become a much soughtafter screenwriter: other credits, to name a few, include “Soapdish,” which was based on Harling’s acting experience and starred Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg and Robert Downey Jr., and “The First Wives Club” for Paramount, starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton. Our 2021/22 Season will be one of our largest and most ambitious seasons ever. We feel strongly that if we invest in our people, community and art on our stages, we will rebound quicker and serve as a catalyst for Milwaukee’s recovery from COVID-19. Now is your opportunity to help us stage our comeback by donating to Milwaukee Rep. Every dollar will help support the actors, designers and technicians who make our productions exceptional.

The Comeback

Challenge The Four-Four Foundation, David & Camille Kundert, and Tom & Molly Duffey will match every new or increased gift dollar for dollar up to $200,000, but only through December 31. Make your gift now and double your impact!

Reopening takes a tremendous amount of effort and resource. Join us and invest in the artists that make your Milwaukee Rep exceptional. To donate, visit www.MilwaukeeRep.com or call the Development Department at 414-290-5376. Gifts can also be made via stock, mandatory IRA distributions, or donor advised funds.
