Our work is representative of Milwaukee’s rich diversity as we aim to be a theater that is welcoming and inspirational to all.

A Note From
Artistic Director Mark Clements Welcome to this performance, and thank you for your generous support of Milwaukee Rep. Art has always been a medium through which we humans share stories, unpack history, negotiate deeply felt emotions, make sense of the world around us, and honor our collective experiences. That’s why we originally programmed Titanic The Musical in our 2020/21 Season, and despite the pandemic, we remained wholeheartedly committed to producing it in our 2021/22 Season. While some people may tentatively question our choice to produce an epic musical about an even more epic historic tragedy, just two full years after we have suffered and continue to endure the tragedy of a worldwide pandemic, we actually feel that this story is ironically more resonant, deeply moving, relevant, and redemptive now than ever before. Titanic is a story about how we live our lives unprepared for disasters and how we handle them when they arrive. A little over two years ago we began to hear the first rumblings of something called a “coronavirus,” but certainly few of us here in the U.S. fully realized what was coming our way until we were in the thick of it. Our collective stories of the pandemic and that of Titanic are vastly different, of course. But it’s also not too difficult to see much of our own recent experiences reflected in this narrative of the passengers and crew who at the start of that voyage had so much hope, love, excitement, aspirations, and visions of the ‘American Dream’ filling their hearts, only to have those dreams interrupted or halted in a single moment, their lives turned upside down and brought to a tragic conclusion in a matter of less than 3 hours. This is a story that still fascinates and has us mourning and shaking our heads in disbelief 109 years later. Incidentally, the 110th anniversary will fall during the run of this production on April 14. So, doing a show like Titanic now, while still navigating our own global tragedy, truly feels absolutely essential. It allows us to honor our past, appreciate our present, and better ourselves for our future. But amid the reckoning there is also joy—excitement for better days to come, a celebration for lives filled with art and innovation, plus admiration for the generosity and resilience of survival and humanity. And, of course, one of those joys is the people who are bringing this story to life. Just like the reallife Titanic, running this show’s ship takes a village of superbly talented folks on stage, backstage, and behind the scenes. I’m grateful and honored to be working on this musical alongside some long-time collaborators and to be welcoming many new folks to the Milwaukee Rep family too. Everyone in this stellar team has strived to honor the legacies of these real-life people whose stories we are telling, as well as the ship’s countless individuals who are not named but always present and deeply felt. Whether you came into this show expecting a musical version of the film (sorry, it’s not!) or as a huge Titanic history buff, we hope you find yourselves fully immersed in this sweepingly beautiful musical score, and for the journey too, where feeling the past speak to the present over the course of the story is compelling. Remember: like the survivors of the Titanic, we are battlescarred, but we are still here, we are alive, and we have more stories to tell. Here’s to survival and life! I dedicate my role in this production to the memory of Titanic 3rd class passenger, David Vartanian, an Armenian, who is the great-grandfather of Melissa Vartanian, Milwaukee Rep’s current Managing Director. Mr. David Vartanian survived the illfated voyage, made his life and family in America, and died in 1966 aged 76. 14

The Lynden Sculpture Garden works with artists, educators, students, and our community to create, support, and share experiences at the intersection of art, nature, and culture.
Lynden operates as a laboratory, offering hands-on programs that integrate our collection of more than 50 monumental sculptures and temporary installations, and our community of artists, with the natural ecology of 40 acres of park, pond, and woodland.
