WALKING BY MEDEA The spatial transmission of the ancient Greek myth of Medea at Cape Melangavi.

Walking By Medea Thesis project | Professor Helen Tatla - one year project West of lake Eshatiotis, dominates the cape Melangavi, where there is one of the largest lighthouses of the Korinthian Gulf. The cape hosts ,apart from the lighthouse, the sunctuary of ancient goddess Hera.

Aeetes, not wanting to be separated from the marvelous acquisition, dares Jason to certain feats in order to give him the Fleece. Medea falls inveighinly in love with Jason and secretly provides him help. So he manages to

his initial commitment to Jason, refuses to surrender the Golden Fleece. Jason swears eternal faith in Medea and with her help, he steals the Golden Fleece and sails away on his ship Argo.

The main inspiration for my thesis project, was the ancient Greek myth of goddess Medea, whose children where massacred by the Corinthians in the sanctuary located at the cape. The myth becomes a vehicle in an experiential journey of the visitor, who is capable to understand the genius loci of the cape while interacting with construction-scenes placed on a route. Through this study is explored the importance of movement and route and how these literally intervene in the visitor’s impression of the cape. The visitor is invited to understand the ethical and social questions arising from the timeless sense of myth and to comprehend himself through participation, wrestling and keeping up with the landscape,

After a long time trip, the couple ends up in the city of Corinth, but here also tragic, lethal events will occur. Jason falls in love with Glafki, daughter of King Creon of Corinth and wants to make marry her. Medea outraged by the betrayal, retaliates her rival by sending as royal gift a cloak impregnated with poison. Glafki and her father have been murdered. After the double crime, Corinthians, furious, are seeking for revenge. They murder Medea’s children in the sanctuary of Hera where Medea had hidden them to save them from the Corinthian’s anger.

consisting of construction-scenes, referred to key points of the myth. The route is formed by six stations on the track of the myth, named by key-names like the “oath of Jason”, the “Corinth”, the “murder”, the “oracle”,

Breaching, however, the sacred space, Corinthians commit hubris. Goddess Hera throws over them famine for not respecting the sacred place. To escape the calamity that fell upon them, they resort to the oracle of the goddess, seeking redemption. According to the prophecy, the

Existing Elements

The Lighthouse The lighthouse is a key component of the cape, built in 1887 and is a characteristical example of preindustrial architecture, aimed to facilitate the navigation of ships. western side of the square tower the lighting cage is developed. The lighthouse is stone - built by elaborate stone and cornerstones.

*Aspect of the lighthouse. One of the biggest of corinthian gulf, is the trademark of cape Melangavi.

The Sunctuary The Heraion archeological site, located at the end of the peninsula of Perachora was discovered in 1930 by British archaeologist Humphrey Peyne northwest of Loutraki. The sunctuary is believed to be one of the oldest temples of the ancient Greek goddess Hera and perhaps, one of the oldest temples of the goddess in Greece. The Heraion sunctuary, consists of two parts dedicated to Hera “Akraia” and Hera “Limenia”. In the southern part of the sanctuary-previously known as the temple of Hera Akraia-worship began in the Geometric period. Around 800pCh, was built found. During the 6th century BC, a new temple of Hera was built a little further. It was Doric, with a rectangular plan and dimensions 10,30 X31 m, accompanied by the altar in the east, which was elongated and decorated by triglyphs. In the 4th century BC,around the altar, eight Ionic columns were added, supporting a roof to protect the priests L-shaped two-storied portico with Doric columns on the ground

* Aspects of the Heraion archeological site. According to the ancient myth , goddess Medea hide her children in the temple of Hera to protect them from the furious Corinthians that slautered them commiting “Yvris”.

A building discovered in the west of the Doric temple, has been interpreted as a market with religious and commercial use. Within 200 meters the second part of the sanctuary was of Hera port. This view, expressed by Professor H. Payne, was based on the existence of a rectangular building in ancient times, considered as a temple of Hera In the sanctuary, Medea allegedly buried her murdered children, leaving Corinth, while the 1st century A.D. Strabo mentions the existence of the holy prophet.

“ Korinthos” In Corinth, Jason fails his promise given to Medea, as he leaves her for the daughter of corinthian king Creon, Glafki. Medea takes revenge for his betrayal by killing the Glafki and Creon. Emotions: Jealousy, Rage, Despair ing that begin with orthogonal forms, while gradually deform in all of its sizes. This deformation corresponds to the deformation of the soul Medea, after Jason’s betrayal, which leads her to a double murder. “Redemption - the lighthouse” Medea on her chariot drawn by dragons, rises in the Emotions: Exaltation, Redemption, Sense of peace. The meaning of the lighthouse as a symbol of eternal guidance, is spatially assigned to this very last structure and redemption, in the form of shallow tanks, is used as a material for forming a spot of peace and harmony. After the painful path in the tunnel, the visitor faces a composition of structures, that creates feelings of euphoria and spiritual uplift in simple lines and forms. Deli Shop The original internal division of space into three separate spaces, serves idealy the deli’s product categorization. Each of these three spaces, are transformed into an idealy “frame” for the product disposal, which are following the clean lines and forms of the cycladian architecture and surprising the customer with modern design details. The geometrical compositions consisting of shelves, combine style and function while highlighting the original shell of the building, Led bars and lamps are selected, adding a classy, modern touch to the interior. In the Deli shop, are promoted exclusively, local products of Sifnos island, plus some selected delicacies from the other Cyclades.

Pencil sketch | Motive created from a traditional pidgeon nest design in Sifnos

Inspiration motive, inspired from the traditional pidgeon houses that are built around the island, gives the tone of the decoration. Pidgeon houses are mostly found in the islands of the Aegean, They are made basically from shale, which is a natural material of the cycladian islands. The local craftsmen have the opportunity to build pidgeon houses, where the diversity and composition of decorative elements is truly remarkable. The pidgeon house forms are also the inspiration for the selection of lighting models and wall motives in this project. The custom materials selected, are mainly natural such as wood, copper, clay and forged cement.

The Cheese Shop

Project

Retail design of a traditional cheese shop in the city of Corinth, Greece.

34| 35

A family with rich tradition in cheese making process, counting 4 generations untill now, commissioned me this for a retail space that would combine their sense of tradition with a modern twist. The shop is located near the center of Corinthos, at a quiet neighborhood, where the relationship between the owner and the customer is extremely important and crucial for sales. The two main customer’s requirements were: a) Extended cashier area b) Promotion of less popular products from the time that enters in the shop, would have enough time to explore the products area before reaching the cashier. In addition, one of the fridges was transfered near the entrance to give a boost to the less popular products and at the same time more space for customer service at cashier’s area . The cashier’s area was transformed from a very limited workbench, to a luminous, easily accesible spot, that works also as a product stand for a last minute buy.

* 3d view of the interior space. Wood and an earthy colour palette were selected for a cosy-country atmosphere

Inspired of the typical english and french “Boulangeries” , with the beautiful wooden facades, my intension was to promote the cosy feeling of a family bussiness. The wooden cheese hangers, with all the hanged “myzithras”, are promoting beautifully one of the hit products of the shop, while being an interesting detail that catches the client’s eye. Behind the cashiers workbench, were placed traditional wooden “FETA” barrels and selves for “Myzithra”. Big blackboard panels are used as catalogs The minimal lighting, based on the idea of rounded cheese shape adds a contemporary touch, while creating a pleasant athmosphere for shopping and work. * Above: Aspect of the cashiers area

The butcher, with whom she has a formal conversation, is a reminder that in life, what matters is survival, one is the predator and someone the prey, there is no sentimentalism in harsh reality. Apart from an exception of human interaction with an employee, Niki is totally emotionally detached from everyone, searching, unsuccessfully, for meaningful human contact. Initial Concept The scenographical proposal was structured around the idea and atmosphere of a morgue. The morgue is a place where corpses are stored, same goes, symbolically, for lives and memories. At the same time, a morgue, is a place thet causes aversion, disgust and fear since it remindes the fear of death. In “Blind Spot” the protagonist, Niki has ceased to feel any contact with others around her.Everything is odorless, colorless, dead. She doesnt feel any sentimental attachment to the living people. Her dead husband is the most “living” thing in her life. The roller systems proposed here , driven by the development of the plot, are symbols for Niki’s march towards the tragic ending. In the boxes of the roller systems, there are levels - drawers just like those in the mortuary, which function as platforms for each scene’s performance.
