Zambales Rep.
(Mindanao Examiner)

We may never truly replace what is lost, but we can do something about those that are at risk environmentally,” said Commissioner Erwin Andaya, NYC chairman on Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. Andaya said citizens can turn off their lights or

and is celebrated across 151 countries, where individuals, businesses, governments, and communities are involved to take action to drumbeat environmentally sustainable undertakings. “Dito sa National Youth Commission, we’ll not just be turning off our lights, we shall also turn off our internet, and other utilities for one hour. We are also encouraging young Filipinos to go beyond the 60-minute switch-off by living more sustainably to minimize our ecological imprint,” Andaya said. For the past four years, the Philippines has had the most number of cities and towns joining the global movement. Earth Hour is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature.

Huge welcome for UNA senatorial bet JV Ejercito Estrada in Zambo
UNA senatorial bet JV Ejercito Estrada during his recent visit to Zamboanga City for the launching of the Ako YON at Western Mindanao State University (Mindanao Examiner Photo) UNA SENA T ORIAL CANDISENAT TE JV Ejercito Estrada visited DATE DA Zamboanga City, and was welcomed by huge crowd of supporters and fans, as part of his campaign sorties in the southern Philippines. Ejercito Estrada also met with students and faculty members of the state-owned Western Mindanao State University led by Dr. Milabel Ho during the launching of the Ako YON (Ako Youth of the Nation) movement. He told students and their leaders of his plans and programs for the youth and the forthcoming increase in government subsidy in stateowned schools by as much as 40%. The San Juan City lawmaker, who is the son of former
President Joseph Estrada, was overwhelmed by the warm welcome he received from students, who, in groups, spent time with Ejercito Estrada posing for photographs inside the university campus. While in Zamboanga City, Ejercito Estrada was also interviewed on TV 11’s No Limit by host Ronnie Lledo where he enumerated his platform of gover nment and plans for Mindanao if gets elected in the mind-term polls in May. He said among his priority program is to legislate proper resource allocation for Mindanao according to potential gains and development goals and to strengthen and augment legislation that encourage investors and indus-
trial growth, especially in sectors that are fitted to Filipino skills and aptitude. Ejercito Estrada expressed alarm over the worsening power situation in the South. “This is alarming, if the situation continues, the power crisis continues, this will definitely affect the economy of the whole of Mindanao. Definitely business will shy away and even some of the business establishments will probably close down and we will have a big problem there because we will lose jobs and we will lose potential jobs as well. We have to improve the power situation in Mindanao by rehabilitating our Agus-Pulangi (hydropower plants) facility,” he said. He said there was a P2 bil-
lion funding in 2010 for the rehabilitation of the hydropower plants, but this was not carried out for a still unknown reason. He said the Department of Energy and the National Power Corporation should look into the critical power situation in Mindanao. Ejercito Estrada also paid a courtesy call to Mayor Celso Lobregat and the local UNA party members led by Crisanto dela Cruz and lawyer and councilman Rommel Agan, and had a dinner at the Lantaka hotel with the delegation from the Junior Chamber International and press people. He motored around Zamboanga in a convoy of vehicles and was interrupted sev-
eral times on the road because of a large number of followers and supporters that blockaded his path to be able to shake hands and take pictures beside his pick-up truck. “I cannot express how happy I am with all these warm reception and show of support by the Zamboanguenos and everybody we met along the way. Zamboanga and Mindanao and Basilan, TawiTawi and Sulu will always be in my heart and we thank them all for their support to me, to us our family,” Ejercito Estrada told th regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner. Ejercito Estrada belongs to the political party of Vice President Jejomar Binay. (Mindanao Examiner)
(Mindanao Examiner)

Soldiers accused in killing of botanists face homicide charges

(Mindanao Examiner)

MANILA - The family of slain botanist Leonard Co and the human rights group Hustisya were disappointed over the Department of Justice resolution to file charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide instead of murder on the soldiers involved in the killing of botanist Leonard Co and two others. Hustisya Secretary General Cristina Guevarra said that the DOJ’s stand to downgrade the charges against the soldiers manifests a slipshod attempt to allegedly whitewash the incident and free the soldiers of their accountability. She said their group also condemned the flimsy
alibi of the soldiers that the killing was merely an “honest mistake.” “Amid their posturing to subscribe to due process, their attempts to mislead the public and cover up the dastardly act makes them all the more guilty of murder. The massacre of Leonard Co and company was not an accident, the soldiers were there to kill,” Guevarra said in a statement sent to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner. Glenda Co, wife of the slain botanist, said they were also not happy with the resolution. “We are not happy with the resolution. We do not agree that the killing of my husband Leonard, and his
companions Sofronio Cortez and Julius Borromeo, is a simple case of homicide,” she said in the same statement. Reiterating that the killing of Leonard, Cortez and Borromeo is murder, Co said the DOJ ignored the results of the independent fact-finding mission led by the “Justice for Leonard Co Movement” just 10 days after the incident. “We have waited this long only to suffer another injustice. By ignoring the need for justice, they have also ignored the life of service that Leonard and his companions had done to their last breath,” Co said. Results of the factfinding team in 2010 belied
claims by the Armed Forces of the Philippines that the three were killed in a crossfire with members of the New People’s Army on November 15 of the same year. The mission team, participated in by scientists and human rights advocates, led by Dr. Giovanni Tapang, revealed that there was no firefight; and that the continuing bursts of gunfire that felled Co and company was one-sided, originating only from where the soldiers of 16th Infantry Battalion were positioned. The Commission on Human Rights also issued its recommendations last year to file charges against the soldiers.

“To add insult to injury, PNP Davao Chief dela Rosa scolded Manlupig in public, saying, you're in a middle of a commotion, so don't expect special treatment," wika ng NUJP sa pahayag na ipinadala nito sa Mindanao Examiner. “Dagudog tried to get an interview with the police chief but he instead confronted her and asked, are you neutral? If you blush, you are not." “Such arrogance and disrespect by dela Rosa towards members of the press is condemnable. His attitude is reflective

There were accounts that police even fondled and stripped women protesters,” dagdag pa ng media watch dog. ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Bureau of Internal Revenue in Western Mindanao expressed optimism that it would be able to collect more revenues this year as it launched its Tax Campaign 2013. BIR regional chief lawyer Albert Alocilja said the campaign aims to
educate the public about the agency’s efforts in collecting revenues from business establishments and workers to add to the government’s coffers. Alocilja also reminded private workers and employees and those self-employed and companies to pay their income tax returns, whose
deadline is on April 15. Last year, the BIR regional office collected almost P4 billion in revenues and overshot its target. Alocilja said their tax campaign slogan for this year is “I Love The Philippines, I Pay Taxes Correctly.” (Mindanao Examiner. Gina Fernando)

Village official who led protest vs non-delivery of food aid is killed DAVAO CITY – Unidentified gunmen shot dead a village official who was among the leaders that led a protest in Davao City to condemn the non-delivery of humanitarian aid to victims of typhoon in Davao Oriental province in the southern Philippines, human rights groups told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner. Quoting reports from Hanimay Suazo, Secretary General of the Karapatan in southern Mindanao, Hustisya said Cristina Jose, of Binondo village in the town of Baganga in Davao Oriental, was killed while heading home. Hustisya strongly condemned the killing of Jose, who was one of the leaders that trooped to the office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Davao City. Jose was also a leader of Bayan Muna and a member of Barug Katawhan, the organization formed by typhoon victims that demanded not only food and relief, but accountability to government agencies such as the DSWD due to the nondelivery of much-needed aid. “We are filled with anger with the killing of Cristina Jose. We condemn those who felled her in as much as we have condemned the government who further aggravated the suffering of the typhoon victims,” Hustisya Secretary General Cristina
Guevarra said. Karapatan said prior to the killing, Jose and the others who joined the protest were allegedly harassed by other officials and soldiers who belong to the 67th Infantry Battalion. “They demanded food and justice, but they are harassed and even killed. We demand justice for Jose, and to the typhoon survivors who have been resilient against the government’s blatant negligence and ineptitude towards their plight,” Guevarra said. The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan also condemned the murder and said “blood is in the hands of President Benigno Aquino.” “We condemn in strongest terms this treachery by the fascist government. What
Kagawad Jose did was to simply expose cases of corruption and human rights violations enshrouding the relief operations in Baganga perpetrated by the 67th Infantry Battalion," said Bayan spokesperson Sheena Duazo. She said troops blockaded the humanitarian aid intended for the typhoon victims in the village of Binondo. “The Aquino government must be held accountable for allowing the number of human rights violations and the state of impunity to go unabated. We demand accountability from the current regime for the killing of Jose and all other victims of Oplan Bayanihan,” Duazo said, referring to the government’s anti-insurgency campaign.

TREASON! A Founded 2006

Filipino youth group called Anakbayan has condemned President Benigno Aquino's handling of the crisis in North Borneo where Malaysian security forces are hunting down members of the Sultanate of Sulu. More than two dozen people were killed in hostilities in the oil-rich island, just several nautical miles from Tawi-Tawi, since last month when about 200 followers of Sultan Jamalul Kiram landed in the town of Lahad Datu to exert their historical
rights over North Borneo. “Aquino has clearly committed treason when he did nothing as Malaysian forces attacked the Filipinos in Sabah,” Vencer Crisostomo, Anakbayan's national chairman, told the Mindanao Examiner. He said Aquino seems to be taking his cue from the Malaysian government and has, from the beginning, failed to take a “sane, patriotic stand” regarding the Sabah claim. “He essentially gave the green light to the Malaysian government to proceed and massacre the

Filipinos in Sabah. This is unforgivable, blood is on his hands,” he said. Crisostomo said Aquino must call strongly on the Malaysian government and the international community to stop the massacre of Filipinos, instead of coming up with “conspiracy theories.” Aquino has blamed the violence to Sultan Jamalul and his purported financiers. He also ordered authorities to unmask who are those financing Sultan Jamalul. “Instead of made up stories of ‘conspiracy,’ he should immediately call
for the halting of the allout attack on Filipinos. The real conspiracy here is between Aquino and the Malaysian government, conniving to dispossess the Philippines and the Sultanate of the rightful claim to Sabah,” Crisostomo said. He said the Sultanate of Sulu and the Philippines have a rightful claim to North Borneo, now called Sabah by Malaysia, which Aquino has continually ignored. Crisostomo brancded Aquino as “a puppet (of Malaysia) and traitor (to the Filipino people).”
President Aquino to Sultan Jamalul Kiram: ‘Reasonable dialogue can only begin when we exercise calm, restraint and have an open mind. PRESIDENT BENIGNO AQUINO reiterated his administration’s position that the only way to end the crisis IN North Borneo is for all parties concerned to sit down and dialogue towards attaining a peaceful and fruitful resolution that is fair to all. Aquino said all stakeholders should exercise calm, restraint, and come to the table together with open minds for reasonable dialogue to commence. He pointed out that he was aware that there were “forces” behind Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III’s actions of sending some 200 of his followers to Lahad Datu town in Northern Sabah to press their claim on the territory, saying these forces, who have put in danger some 800,000 Filipinos living and working in Sabah, would not prosper in their plans. “Mulat tayong may

He did not say who was behind or funding the Sultanate of Sulu, but he ordered authorities to investigate this. Aquino also called on all the 5 governors of the Muslim autonomous region – Dr. Sakur Tan, of Sulu; Esmael Mangudadatu, of Maguindanao; Jum Akbar, of Basilan; Mamintal Adiong, Jr. of Lanao, and Mujiv Hataman – to help in resolving the crisis. The five governors were in the Presidential Palace in Manila when Aquino renewed his appeal to the Sultanate of Sulu. For Filipino lawmaker JV Ejercito Estrada, he said :"Now that we are facing a crisis in Sabah, there should be no opposition or administration at this point, this is an external crisis. As a Filipino, I would want the President and his men to be given enough space to resolve the crisis peacefully and exhaust all means diplomatically. But I would just like to remind them to also take into consideration the welfare and lives of our Filipino Muslim brothers. Whatever they are called or referred to, they are still Filipinos."
