Elderly praise ‘Congresswoman’ Beng

Another woman said: “Nalipay, nalipay kami basin gagmay. Ako 64, makadawat ko P500 lipay na kaayo kay yawat na para sa amua pan-tambal na lang. Madam Beng

salamat kaayo sa incentive.”

And one Muslim woman also thanked Climaco and said: “Masayang-masaya kami ngayon at nabigyan kami. Hindi namin ma-describe ang aming saya. Tignan mo na lang at ang dami-dami namin dito ngayon.”

Senior citizens whose ages are 60 to 69 received P500; P700 for ages 70 to 79; P800 for ages 80 to 90; P1,500 for 91 to 94 years old; and P2,000 for ages 95 to 99.

The assistance given to senior citizens could have been more had not the opposition councilors who are allies of Rep. Mannix Dalipe and former lawmaker Celso Lobregat “killed” the Largo Vida program of Climaco which was the assistance intended for senior citizens and the disadvantaged sectors of the community.

Climaco identified the opposition councilors as Monsi dela Cruz (now deceased); John Dalipe, BG Guingona, Mike Alavar, Litlit Macrohon, Khymer Olaso, Lilibeth Nuño, Cary John Pioc, VP Elago, Gerky Valesco and Jerry Perez.

Dela Cruz and the younger Dalipe ran under Climaco’s political party, but eventually broke off ties with the mayor after

winning the 2019 polls and aligned themselves with Lobregat’s Team Colorao only to split with the group. Climaco defeated Lobregat in the last election after winning a landslide victory over the veteran politician.

But despite the demise of the Largo Vida program, senior citizens and their families continue to praise Climaco for her unwavering support to the welfare of the elderly, and those who received the aid said “Beng is a blessing to us.”

Last September, a 100-year old woman from Barangay Cabatangan received a total of P50,000 from Climaco as counterpart of the local government’s incentives to senior citizens under Republic (Centenarians of 2016) Act 10868 which honor and grant additional benefits and privileges to centenarians.

Climaco personally went to the house of Angelina Santos and handed her P30,000 covering the last payment of the incentive. The mayor was accompanied by Councilor Pinpin Pareja and social workers.

Santos’ family thanked Climaco for the incentive, saying the money will greatly help them, especially at this time of

Aside from the birthday cash gifts, Climaco continues to distribute cash incentives to octogenarians and nonagenarians. The granting of incentives is pursuant to a local ordinance and one of the numerous benefit packages for senior citizens unveiled only during the Climaco administration.

Climaco said the cash incentives is just one of the numerous benefit packages her administration has for senior citizens.

She said the cash incentive will ensure that senior citizens will have funds to buy basic necessities such as medicines. She also assured her administration’s support and various benevolent programs for the elderly sector.

Nonagenarians or

those whose ages are from 90-99 years are to receive P20,000 each, and P10,000 each to octogenarians who are 80-89 years old.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office and the City Treasurer’s Office facilitate the distribution of the incentives to beneficiaries of the program in coordination with the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs and the Federation of Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines.

Climaco said the actions of the opposition affected some 17,000 senior citizens and all 400 “Vida lifeliners,” including women and those who are out-of-school and mostly breadwinners of their families, who were tapped to tirelessly deliver health assistance door-to-door to every elderly beneficiaries of the Largo Vida.

“Those (opposition

councilors) members who voted to remove funding for such vital programs must face the people of Zamboanga City and must be held responsible and accountable for such irrepressible action,” she said. “It is not just cash that is needed, we need a more comprehensive program that will genuinely and sustainably empower our people through medicines, access to critical social services and livelihood to make our people resilient and survive the day to day challenges while we are under a pandemic. It is only during the time of Climaco that such programs and social services benefitted thousands of senior citizens and the vulnerable sector.

aid to ambulant vendors and other vulnerable groups at the KCC Mall de Zamboanga.

Tens of thousands of Zamboangueños who received financial aid from the local government praised and thanked Climaco for always prioritizing the poor and the needy, including the vulnerable sectors in the community.

Many of those who thanked the mayor said they have started campaigning for her to ensure that Climaco’s pro-poor programs continue even after she wins the polls.

They are now addressing Climaco as “Congresswoman Beng.”

Climaco vowed to continue her various propoor programs which she started even before she became mayor, and she pledged to aggressively pursue them if she becomes congresswoman.

“This is our commitment to the poor. El Curada, Comida y Busca la Vida este tiempo de pandemia remains our thrust in our COVID-19 response efforts,” she said.

are taken, was approved late by members of the City Council. The LSAP roll out for Covid-19 survivors started in August last year.

The distribution of cash aid is being facilitated by the City Social Welfare and Development Office with paymasters from the City Treasurer’s Office.

According to the PDAU, it membership now has in increased to 6,000 due to the strong advocacy of Mayor Beng Climaco who prioritizes the vulnerable sectors of the community, especially the PWDs and the elderly, among others.

The establishment of the PDAU, which was initiated by Climaco, takes charge of the issuance of PWD ID cards to legitimate members and providing immediate assistance in crisis situations, including the provision of assistive devices and assisting and monitoring complaints.

It also organizes federation and community and barangay association for PWDs and regularly conducts advocacy training and seminars and assists in the grant of financial incentives, PhilHealth membership, among others.

Under Republic Act No. 10754 or the Act Expanding the Benefits and Privileges of Persons with Disability, PWDs are given

PDAU staffs. (Henry Salac) 20% discounts; exemption to value-added tax; 5% discount on basic necessities and prime commodities; and free use of express lanes in commercial and government transactions.

PWD refers to persons with the following types of disabilities: Psychosocial disability, including bipolar disorder, depression, ADHD or Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, epilepsy, and other long-term and recurring mental or behavioral issues; disability resulting from a chronic illness and this includes orthopedic disability due to cancer, blindness due to diabetes, and other

disabilities due to chronic disease; and learning disability such as processing problems that hinder learning math, reading, writing, and other basic skills.

Other kinds of disabilities covered by the law are visual disability, but simple poor eyesight does not automatically qualify a person as a PWD unless the visual impairment cannot be corrected; orthopaedic (Musculoskeletal) disability or people with dwarfism and amputated hands or feet; individuals with scoliosis, mental/intellectual disability; hearing disability; speech impairment; and multiple disabilities.

Covid cases going down

The spike in the Covid-19 cases is largely blamed to the more contagious Omicron variant which is now the dominant variant in the country after the Delta variant.

Mayor Beng Climaco, head of the local Covid-19 inter-agency task force, urged residents to strictly observe the public health protocols and get vaccinated as the City Health Office continues to put up walk-in and drive through vaccination sites in different areas.

“We should not be complacent here. The spike in Covid-19 cases were largely due to complacency by residents and further aggravated by the Omicron (variant). Residents should always wear their face masks and observe physical distancing

in public areas or places where people converge.

Always wash or sanitize hands and avoid holding the face and mouth with dirty hands,” Climaco said.

The Department of Health also appealed to the public to follow health protocols to prevent the spread of the virus in the community, especially in homes, offices and enclosed places.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said Covid-19 can easily spread through the air, noting that proper ventilation can be achieved by always keeping windows or doors open for fresh air to flow or putting an electric fan in front of a window for good air circulation.

“Kinakailangan nating sumunod sa minimum public health standards

Vergeire also noted the importance of vaccines as protection from Covid-19.

Both Climaco and Vergeire also urged parents to have their children aged 5-11 vaccinated against Covid-19, saying children are also susceptible to the virus and it is imperative that younger populations have access to the safe and effective vaccines.

Pulmonya: Impeksyon Sa Baga Ni Dr. Willie T. Ong

ng pulmonya ay isang matinding impeksyon sa baga dulot ng bacteria, virus o fungus. Mas malaki ang panganib kung ang pasyente ay edad 65 pataas, may matagalang karamdaman o mahina ang immune system.

Ang iba pang risk factors sa pagkakaroon ng pulmonya ay ang paninigarilyo, may emphysema (isang sakit sa baga), at exposure sa polusyon sa hangin.

Paano nakukuha ang pulmonya?

Kadalasan ay nag-uumpisa ang pulmonya bilang isang trangkaso o ubo. At kung mahina ang ating katawan, puwedeng lumipat ang impeksyon sa ating baga at maging pulmonya.

Ang sintomas ng pulmonya at ang lagnat, ubo, hirap sa paghinga at panghihina ng katawan.

Ngunit hindi lahat ng tao ay magkakaroon nitong sintomas.

Dahil dito, mas mabuti na magpa-Chest X-ray ang pasyente. Ang Chest X-ray ang tiyakang magsasabi kung ika’y

may pulmonya o wala.

Ipinasusuri din ng doktor ang plema (sputum test) para matukoy ang mikrobyo ng pulmonya.

Makikita sa blood test (CBC test) ang epekto ng impeksyon sa katawan.

Ano ang komplikasyon?

May 2 klase ng pulmonya. Ang isa ay nakukuha sa komunidad, ang Community Acquired Pneumonia.

Ang isa naman ay galing sa ospital, ang Hospital Acquired Pneumonia. Mas seryoso ang mikrobyo na galing sa ospital.

Ang komplikasyon ng pulmonya ay mas nakikita sa mga may edad, naninigarilyo at may dating sakit sa baga. Posibleng lumipat ang mikrobyo mula sa baga at kumalat ito sa dugo. Sepsis ang tawag dito. Puwede ding magkaroon ng nana (abscess) o tubig sa baga.

Gamutan sa pulmonya: 1. Pag-inom ng antibiotics. Kapag hindi malala ang pulmonya, puwede pa ito makuha sa pag-inom ng antibiotics, tulad ng Co-Amoxiclav 375 mg tablets. Ngunit kung may edad na ang pasyente o matindi ang impeksyon

na tumama, kailangang ipasok sa ospital ang pasyente para mabigyan ng antibiotic sa swero.

2. Pag-inom ng gamot sa ubo at lagnat, tulad ng carbocisteine capsule at paracetamol tablets.

3. Magpahinga at huwag muna pumasok sa trabaho.

4. Uminom ng 8-10 basong tubig para lumabnaw ang plema at bumaba ang lagnat.

5. Magpatingin at sundin ang lahat ng payo ng doktor.

Paano iiwas sa pulmonya?

1.

Magpabakuna laban sa pulmonya at trangkaso. Ang pneumonia vaccine ay binibigay bawat 5 taon, at ang flu vaccine ay binibigay kada taon. Ang mga taong edad 60 pataas ang kadalasang binibigyan nito.

2. Huwag manghawa ng iba. Maghugas ng kamay palagi. Idura ang plema sa tissue o lababo at hugasan ito. Huwag gaano makipag-usap sa ibang tao. At siyempre, itigil na ang paninigarilyo.

Sunday Reflection

by Mayor Beng Climaco ‘In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.’

TODAY’s Psalm is a realization of what transpired in office. We were distributing vitamins to all the offices of the City Government, then came the Engineer’s Office and a literal “Angel” came and whispered God’s seal of consolation.

Sir Angel seems very formal and serious in appearance at first glance, but is the sweet, encouraging colleague who is generous with words of support. We took photos for documentation with Kenneth and Pia. Then he gave me a thumbs-up of encouragement, addressing the critics who took offence at my joyful welcome to VP Leni Robredo.

He says about me - “Right kel suyo of SELF-EXPRESSION!” GRACIAS A DIOS, for the wisdom of Sir Angel Basco, who chooses to see the goodness in others rather than infecting a Covid pandemic world with the virus of hate!

“Because of your kindness and your truth; for you have made great above all things your name and your promise. When I called, you answered me; you built up strength within me.”

Right to Self-Expression! We forget about this. As our true selves is an evolution of our identity in the stages of life. What made me dance was the feeling that I missed the Street Dance and festivity we had prior to the pandemic. And the energy of the dancers and drummers was a form of Praise to God as we honour those who bring the

gift of dance, music, and celebration.

I dance, to thank God for this gift, which began when Mrs. Dolores Cruz told me to dance in Grade 6, when I was so shy. This is God’s gift that I share. I join my Zumba sisters and brothers with advocacy on breast cancer prevention and stress reliever.

The senior citizens, the women, the urban poor, the youth, the beneficiaries of the Covid pandemic smile when we express joy amid the pain, para dale esperanza que el Dios dale canaton buen futuro y prosperidad! Jeremiah 29:11 my call to be Mayor.

As I narrow down to the last four months of my term as Mayor, I live each day giving my BEST to God and Zamboanga City down to my very last day on June 30, 2022. So many people we need to reach out and share the services of the Government with the help of our co-workers.

MAYOR BENG Climaco congratulated the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) for topping the 2021 Crime Solution Efficiency (CSE) and Crime Clearance Efficiency (CCE) in the country.

The ZCPO was adjudged as Number One based on the Philippine National Police’s Unit Crime Periodic Efficiency Report (UCPER) for the period January to December 2021. The ZCPO achieved a rating of 98.84% for index crimes solution and 99.39% for non-index crimes solution and bested all other police offices nationwide.

With ZCPO having the highest CSE means that almost all crimes committed last year were solved with suspects arrested and cases filed in court. The ZCPO also
