EDITOR’S LETTER
BEAUTY... …is a very personal matter indeed. I’m sure most of us believe it’s what’s within that counts (holding my hand up!), but we’re only human. Who doesn’t like a neat red lip in Dior’s scarlet shade of the season, or a nice blow-out that makes your hair – and, in turn, you – all kinds of fabulous?
PH OTO B Y N ATO W ELTON
Done well, beauty that enhances you on the outside has the ability to open doors. It’s a confidence-boosting, feel-good machine – and, if you embrace it with just a pinch of seriousness, you’ll knock ’em out. It can work wonders for the soul, too. I was inspired by beauty expert Alessandra Steinherr’s take on it in our Obsessed with the Best feature (p46). Beauty, she points out, is far more democratic than fashion, allowing us to focus on our attributes rather than the ideals of the catwalk. It’s blissfully independent of weight, race or religion. Obsessed with the Best also interviews other experts whose talents allow us to explore the kind of happiness that beauty offers. From perfumer Alberto Morillas’ exquisite fragrances to Zoë Taylor’s makeup tricks, it’s all within reach – and fun. Something about beauty products excites us all – from the packaging (my heart skips a beat even at Jess Punter’s pick of men’s grooming products, p74), to the feeling it creates. That could be its ability to transform (see our cover shoot, p54, and beauty shoot, p38, for inspiration) or how we feel when we apply a beautiful scent. (We bring you the best on p106.) I’ve questioned myself about my attraction to the beauty and fashion industries. The Catholic in me even went as far as seeking a sign-off from a priest before my first job, at Vogue. Shouldn’t I be out saving lives? As one of my contributors put it, ‘Let’s face it: what we’re doing is PR, not ER!’ But my spiritual mentor gave a surprising answer: ‘It’s not what you do – but who you are when you do it.’ I realised my version of beautiful is making a difference within my vocation. But I still love a red lip. ASTRID JOSS,

BR AND NEW BEAUT Y
MINE LOVES… ...the latest addition to Dolce & Gabbana’s Velvet collection, Velvet Incense – inspired by spirals of burning incense from the palaces of Sicily in centuries past. Top notes include incense, black pepper, elemi and benzoin. The mid notes are incense, citrus; the base notes, patchouli and amber wood. Expect a deep, fragrant smokey blend with cinnamon and vanilla sweetness. Velvet Incenso eau de parfum, £200 for 50ml, £325 for 150ml, Dolce & Gabbana at harrods.com
G LOW G E T ’ E M Lancôme’s new Californian Glow, £42, combines a bronzing powder and highlighter. Its blend of sunny pigments creates a reflective, golden pearliness. The maxi size means the brush illuminates your face and neckline in a single sweep – genius! Finish with the creamy, long-wear Teint Idole Ultra Stick Blusher, £27, for a healthy and natural shine. lancome.co.uk
TH E S PR I N G TR EN DS Modern makeup, said Wendy Rowe, artistic consultant to Burberry, is all about ‘looking and feeling undetectable’, so this season’s Burberry catwalk girls had a paradoxically perfect minimal makeup look. Ralph Lauren opted for more homely Americana, with mere hints of a defined eye, cheekbone and lip, and hair swept off the face and untouched. At Chloé, Isabel Marant and Altuzarra, hair had a classic done-but-undone look: natural, glossy waves.

FORGE T
ME NOT Nature inspires a dazzling new range from the legendary house of Harry Winston
THE LEGEND THAT IS HARRY WINSTON continues to charm and dazzle us with a new ForgetMe-Not collection. This spring, the famed jewellery house adds to its white diamonds portfolio with a colourful selection that introduces the prettiest of pink and the most beautiful of blue sapphires. The sophisticated yet oh-so delicate floral suite includes seven designs, on necklaces, pendants, earrings, bracelets, rings and complementary charms. The graceful daytime jewels feature brilliant pearshaped and marquise-cut stones that come together in perfect harmonya. The revelatory result: a celebration of nature’s greatest gift to us, the flower. And how could we ever forget the great man himself, Mr Winston? The jewellery legend who dressed the great and the good, and declared that jewels were his ‘insatiable obsession’? When he wasn’t
obsessing over precious gemstones, his attention was focused on the glitzy, glamorous people who came in and out of his life and for whom he designed, such as Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie Kennedy. Can’t get much better that that! These muses, combined with his extraordinary talent, inspired him to create some of the most incredible pieces of jewellery ever seen, setting standards sky-high within the industry. But away from the Hollywood spotlights, there was another muse in his life: nature. From lively sunflowers to budding lilies and delicate tulips, he took inspiration from the most exquisite of natural beauties, the flower. The new Forget-Me-Not range ensures this legacy lives on. harrywinston.com

KILL ’EM WITH COLOUR
Dr Sebagh’s De-Puff Eye Treatment (£52, drsebagh.com) reduces puffiness and dark circles, for a perfect preparty lift. Apply Ellis Faas’ E303 Bronze (£26, net-a-porter.com) to your lids. Highlight your eyes and get artistic with it!
Rainbow-hued eyes covered the catwalks. Pat McGrath at Prada set the trend with smokey eyes in purple and magenta, adorned with studded crystals. At Anna Sui, McGrath went for a dreamy look. And at Ferragamo and Dior, paintbox colours lined the lids.
DIOR

There’s much more to this than meets the eye. Blow-dry straight or curly, and use Oribe’s Rock Hard Gel (£36, net-a-porter. com) at the roots. Then make your fingers do the talking: either just wet the roots or style all the way to the ends.
SURF’S UP
A pulled-through wet-hair look was a go-to for many designers this season. Roberto Cavalli lifted roots with products, kept it messy and volumised through the ends. Prada and Emilia Wickstead settled on a ‘just stepped in from the rain’ vibe. It’s the look that says, ‘I look fabulous even with wet hair!’

“My agent called to see if I was free to fly to New York to shoot Miu Miu’s campaign. I felt very proud to be a part of it”
eclining on the floor engulfed in a ruby red Ralph & Russo gown, or draped over a chair in a lilac Amanda Wakeley dress, Millie Brady is the picture of elegance. But a grave fashion error nearly jeopardised this MINE shoot entirely. “You’re not allowed into The Ritz wearing jeans,” explains the actress, 23, referring to the iconic hotel which is the location of our shoot. “I was warned, but in the morning I forgot and absentmindedly threw on a pair of jeans. They wouldn’t let me in!” Fortunately, after much “wrangling”, Millie was granted hotel access and now describes the shoot as one of her favourites – “so relaxed, fun and informal”. And she should know. Millie is no stranger to the camera. Her impressive career has seen her grace the cover of Tatler and numerous billboards as the face of Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer ’16 campaign – not to mention her current prime-time TV role in BBC2’s The Last Kingdom. “I never planned to model, but the opportunity came about after my first film, Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, was released, and I felt I couldn’t turn it down. I’d been to a Miu Miu show at London Fashion Week and a few weeks later my agent called to see if I was free to fly to New York to shoot their campaign. The brand is gorgeous, obviously, but I was also happy that over their lifetime, they’ve nurtured young actresses. Lupita Nyong’o, Elle Fanning… these are actresses I admire and look up to. [Miu Miu] knew I wasn’t a model, but they wanted me to be myself. I felt very proud to be a part of it.” Fashion aside, Millie’s acting career has gone from strength to strength in just a few years. It started when she was six and her parents sent her to an after-school drama club. “I didn’t know then that I wanted to be an actress,” she says, “but I was very shy as a child – I still am, to an extent – so they thought that would improve my confidence, which it did.” Millie then attended boarding school from the age of 11 to 18 in Berkshire, where her talent was nurtured further. “We had an amazing drama department. A few friends and I wrote a children’s play when we were 18, which our teachers encouraged us to take to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Being immersed in that creative environment [of the festival], performing on stage and surrounded by writers and actors, made me realise this was where I wanted to be.” An agent spotted and signed Millie, and she was quickly offered a role as Violette Selfridge, the daughter of protagonist Harry, in ITV’s Mr Selfridge. “I had applied to university, but was like, ‘Do I carry on applying or do I go with this?’ Because it’s hard to get that first break, so I went with it and started working. It all happened very quickly.” A part as a young Joan Collins followed a year later, for the Kray brothers big-screen biopic, Legend, starring Tom Hardy, before her breakout role as Mary Bennet in

MA K EU P A RT IST She’s assisted Charlotte Tilbury, shot covers for Vogue, worked with Bella Hadid, and become a Chanel ambassador. Samantha Freedman meets the makeup artist of the moment, Zoë Taylor
I
defy anyone to not fall in love with the work of Zoë Taylor. Glossy, glowing skin is her forte and most requested look. It’s perhaps the reason that Rihanna, Bella Hadid, Adwoa Aboah and Kiera Knightley call on her for Vogue and Harper’s, and why she’s painted faces for colossal campaigns by Burberry, Aquascutum and Amanda Wakeley. Her appointment as a Chanel ambassador sees her expand into art-directing editorial shoots and hosting press and public masterclasses. But how did the London-born Taylor break into beauty? ‘When I walked into art school, I realised the medium I could paint could be a face, not necessarily a canvas. So I trained as a beauty therapist, which catapulted my love for skincare, makeup, products and ingredients.’ She went on to London’s Glauca Rossi School of Makeup, whose alumni includes makeup legend Charlotte Tilbury. Taylor assisted

Tilbury after her studies: ‘A lucky experience,’ she concedes, ‘that perhaps wouldn’t be possible now.’ As Taylor’s career skyrocketed, she was enlisted for campaigns around the world. ‘Flying to Brazil to shoot the utterly beautiful Rihanna for Vogue, with the amazing photographer Mariano Vivanco, was by far my biggest career highlight,’ she reminisces. ‘I feel very honoured to have been part of such a wonderful team.’ Taylor’s humbleness is part of her charm. Her amazing knowledge of skincare, makeup and how to use products is why she works with the world’s greatest, but she has plenty of tips for the rest of us. ‘There’s little things that every woman can do. First, apply your mascara in upward strokes; this encourages the lashes to lift, and really opens the eye. Next, remember to brush your brows up; this will give you an immediate brow lift. When it comes to filling sparse areas, use two different brow pencils. I love Chanel’s Crayon Sourcils (£21, chanel.com) to imitate natural hair colours. And always invest in a good waterproof pencil for lining the waterline. Topshop’s Waterproof Eyeliner in Ebony (£5, topshop.com) is my favourite.’ Great skin is her most requested look, so how are her iconic succulent cheeks achieved? ‘No foundation will perform well unless your skin is prepped properly,’ she explains. ‘I always start with a cleanse. Simple’s Micellar Cleansing Water (£4, ocado.com) is the best as it’s not perfumed and is suitable for even sensitive skins. Then I apply moisturiser with a drop of oil to hydrate and add radiance. My favourites are Weleda’s Rose Night Cream (£22.95, weleda.com) and Chanel’s Jasmin Oil (£97, chanel.com). ‘My favourite foundation, that doesn’t mask the skin, is Chanel Sublimage Le Teint (£100, chanel.com). I dab By Terry Touche Veloutée (£38, spacenk.com) over areas that need brightening and concealing, and blend it all together with a Beautyblender (£17, cultbeauty.co.uk). Sometimes I’ll dot faux freckles over the nose and cheeks to make skin look more youthful, using lip pencils from Charlotte Tilbury (The Classic in Audrey, £16, charlottetilbury.com/uk) and Chanel (Le Crayon Levres in Rouge Noir, £20, chanel.com).’ Taylor showcases her work on Instagram. ‘I can’t remember what life was like before it,’ she admits. ‘Instagram’s an amazing platform, providing talented people with new opportunities they would only have dreamed of before.’ She also takes cues from nature and the effects of light and water on colour and form. ‘I can spend hours,’ she says, ‘looking at the light through the rain.’ And what advice would Zoë aspiring makeup artists? ‘Believe in yourself and the universe, be who you want to be, do your thing, and surround yourself with talented and inspiring people.’ Amen!
MOVERS & SHAKERS use Ultralift (ultrasound) with a little Botox to lift and freshen the eye area. For restoring volume, we would use my volumising and contouring technique, Dream Sculpture. The key to these treatments is that there’s relatively little downtime. For ageing skin, we use radio frequency treatments such as Explore or Scarlet with microneedling. These tighten the skin dermis and restore elasticity by stimulating the production of collagen. What about those who aren’t brave enough for treatment? It isn’t a question of being brave. Technology means many treatments are non-invasive, with little downtime, and treatments can be combined with great results. Botox and Ultralift, for example, can be combined to ensure a lifted brow, a more open eye area and a defined jaw line. Radio frequency and PRP (platelet rich plasma) can be combined for plumper, glowing skin, and lasers can be combined to remove dark spots. But you need to start early, to prevent premature ageing and damage. What new treatments are available at your clinic? Ultralift has amazing results. It’s gentle: ultrasound waves reach deep into the muscle layer, so the skin lifts and tightens. We’ve had this for years for the face and the body – and, this spring, launched the Ultralift Eye treatment. The bespoke head for our machine targets the delicate eye area, reducing puffiness, wrinkles and crow’s feet. We also have the Explore radio frequency with microneedling, which works on the superficial layers of the skin. It encourages the production of collagen, which leads to firmer skin with reduced pores and wrinkles. The Silhouette Soft thread lift is one of our most popular treatments. Absorbable threads reposition the fat pads, lifting the skin and restoring the natural volume of the face and neck.
THE
DO C TO R
Do you have any tips for getting beach-ready? Plan early, as some treatments require several visits and can bruise. We’ve had excellent results with knee and bum lifts; using threads to lift and firm the rear and give you the knees of a twenty-five-year-old! We have fat-reducing machines such as the Fat Blaster, with ultrasound to break down the fat in the layers under the skin and Sculpt Freeze that freezes fat cells, which die and are flushed out by the body.
One of the premier cosmetic doctors, Dr Jean-Louis Sebagh has clinics in London and Paris. He coined the phrase ‘ageingmaintenance’ to describe his preserving of youth and vibrancy and is renowned for his precision and natural-looking results
Why did you launch a product range? Well-maintained skin responds better to cosmetic treatments, and the procedures last longer. I look at skin all day and develop products as a result. I was seeing pigmentation and premature ageing in the ‘selfie generation’: the blue light from phones was causing damage to the skin, so I developed Supreme Day Cream with a melanin filter to protect it. I’m very lucky to have my own laboratories – so, as soon as I have an idea, I start formulating. Also, like my treatments, the products can be combined for bespoke skincare. The Dr Sebagh Serum Bar shows you how to combine serums to suit your needs, which are always changing.
What made you become a doctor in this field? I started in reconstructive surgery, with a focus on the head and neck. I followed that with aesthetic surgery. I’ve always had a natural inclination towards beauty – the aesthetic and design. My vision was to explore ways of avoiding surgery – ageing gracefully and maintaining a subtle evolution, without drastic transformations.
What’s your favourite product? My latest, Self-Tanning Drops. The sun isn’t good for premature ageing of the skin. My drops contain an HEV complex that protects against blue light and gives a natural glow – just add a couple to your serum or day cream. And Dr Sebagh Pure Vitamin C Powder Cream can be combined with all the products, to lighten and brighten skin.
Where would you like to see the industry heading? Technologies such as ultrasound, radio frequency and new types of filler continue to evolve and enable us to create better and more natural results. The facelift of old will soon be forgotten altogether. You’re known for looking at a person’s face and seeing things it ‘needs’ that other doctors don’t… I’ve been doing this for a long time. A good cosmetic doctor will see a patient and identify the way that their face will age – hollowing here, sagging there – and correct it. There are two key things: the ageing of the face and the ageing of the skin. These aren’t the same. As skin ages, it becomes thinner and is altered by sun, diet, pollution and smoking, resulting in lines, pigmentation and loss of elasticity. The ageing face is defined by sagging muscles and fat slipping downwards to give a gaunt look. For a drooping eye, we
For those considering visiting you, what’s your advice? Don’t wait too long. But my approach can make a difference at every age. Don’t have too much sugar, drink plenty of water and no ‘yo-yo’ dieting: it isn’t good for the skin. Pick a healthy weight and stick to it. And what, in your opinion, makes a face beautiful? Each woman has unique beauty. My approach has always been about helping a woman to look and feel her attractive best, at every age. t age nine, I knew hair was all I wanted to do,’ Errol Douglas recalls. ‘My dad’s best friend owned Chelsea Girl (now River Island, and I was like an adopted son, travelling with him everywhere – meetings, shoots, you name it. I became hooked on the fashion industry.’ ‘Hooked’ is a good word for Errol. He’s an addictive character to be around, oozing charisma and oodles of humour. For him, it’s all about the banter; he just happens to be exceedingly good with hair and scissors. And by his own admission, he has an addictive personality, which filters into a craft that he lives, breathes, eats and dreams. Proof of his drive is that, by ten, he had a job at an Islington hair salon. ‘It was the chat that pulled me in,’ he admits. ‘I was so young, I was given the most basic jobs. I laugh when I think those were the days when both the client and the stylist would be smoking. Imagine that! So I used to clean up the cigarette ash but would stand around listening to the conversations. I was so impressed at how diverse the discussions were, and how clients held their hairdresser in such high esteem – like a kind of guru, trusting them with everything from their overall look to their most private doings.’ Training under the famed stylist Paul Edmonds in central London, he was introduced to the fashion producer Jane Galpin, who soon had him working backstage on TV. ‘I loved styling, cutting and revamping – being able to change a model’s look within five minutes,’ he says. ‘It was fascinating. Then of course there were the incredible people you meet in the industry: big characters full of energy and ambition.’ Suitably inspired, Errol had, by twenty-seven,
established his own salon in Knightsbridge. He’s full of confidence, which is reassuring; you wouldn’t trust a shy stylist any more than you’d trust a skinny cook. But, refreshingly, he’s not interested in the acclaim. Errol’s vibe, which he emits in person and to his 25,000-strong Instagram following, is very much one of peace, love and thanks. He credits the salon’s multiple awards to his talented team, and says, ‘Having your own salon, for me, isn’t ego-based. It’s about producing the next big hairdresser. We’re proud to have produced Jamie Stevens and Junior Green – both now big TV and session stylists. ‘My belief is, in anything you do, you mentor the future and that is your reward. Of course, we’re known for technical excellence and pride ourselves on second-to-none service. Our clients are used to The Ritz and Claridge’s. They have expectations!’ And with a melting pot of society girls and celebrities (among them, Emelia Fox and Lewis Hamilton), and clients flying in from New York, Hong Kong and Jamaica to go under his blades, he’s clearly doing something right. ‘Put it this way,’ he jokes, ‘I have a lot of secrets!’ But why see Errol when there are new stylists and salons popping up every day? The answer: experience and knowledge. Errol is the same eager beaver he was at ten, except now he calls the shots. ‘I’m still head-over-heels in love with the industry for its vibrancy,’ he declares. ‘I could be on a plane to a shoot, in a conference with James Dyson to be one of his ambassadors, or with a client in the salon – but I’m constantly learning and updating myself and my skills, which I feed back to the team and ultimately the client. I love to advise and help people, but I’m not a dictator. It’s great to talk, but it’s even better to listen.’ Go see him – you’ll soon find out why he’s the one.

THE
E D I T OR Vogue Beauty Director Jessica Diner dishes the inside scoop on the ultimate fashion magazine
When did your passion for beauty begin? I worked on the reception desk of a spa during summers at university, and loved trying the product samples. I went through a phase of wanting to be a beauty therapist, but when I interned in Tatler’s beauty department, I knew this side of the industry was better suited to me. I was hooked from that day. How did you progress in the industry? I looked for other internships at Condé Nast. I worked for magazines at Vogue House – GQ, Vanity Fair, Vogue Japan, Vogue China – until I got a placement in the beauty department of British Vogue. That turned into a full-time role – and I’ve never looked back. What do you love about working on magazines? The whole process. From the ideas brainstorm, to seeing the pages in print, every step is a thrill. So much time and care goes into each page. Then, every month, we wipe the slate clean, the pages are refreshed and we start again. The creativity is limitless. And now, with digital becoming more a part of our job, I love being able to write reactive, daily content that adds a different dimension to the role. What has Vogue given you that nothing else could? Access. Working somewhere like Vogue, you hear about things first – but, also, you don’t follow trends, you define them.
Tom Ford’s Soleil Blanc, which is the scent of the summer (selfridges. com); Guerlain Terracotta bronzer – there’s nothing better (guerlain. com); a bright nail varnish for toes – Chanel and Dior are my go-tos; and Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir, to refresh your complexion on flights or on sunbeds (uk.caudalie.com). What three habits should we all adopt? The benefits of a skincare routine are no secret. Find out what works for you and stick to it. If you invest in one thing, let it be your serum. I’d even be so bold as to say skip the moisturiser and load up your skin with a cocktail of your favourite serums. The concentrated ingredients mean they’re better value for money, too. And look after your brows – good brows will always make you look well put together.
What’s trending in beauty now? So much! Sheet masks, Japanese skincare brands, multitasking makeup, direct-to-consumer brands like Glossier and Pat McGrath, influencer brands like Charlotte Tilbury, Huda Beauty, Hair by Sam McKnight… There’s so much going on in the industry right now. What do you think will be big in 2019? Big brands giving niche offerings. Whether it’s fashion, lifestyle or beauty, everyone wants to feel they’re being spoken to directly by brands, or that brands are listening to them and their needs. Personalisation is a big trend, and it’s only going to get more bespoke. What five products do you swear by? Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair (esteelauder.co.uk), Sarah Chapman’s Ultimate Cleanse (sarahchapman.net), Benefit’s Roller Lash mascara (benefitcosmetics.com), Nars’ Creamy Concealer (narscosmetics.co.uk) and Lanolips’ 101 Ointment (lanolips.com).
What area of beauty is your favourite? Skincare, for sure. I’m a bit of a geek at heart, so I love learning about new ingredients and formulas, and how they interact with the skin. Who influences your style? I’m influenced by brands more than people. I just love floral-print dresses – my wardrobe’s bursting with them. If it’s floral-print and midi-length – the most flattering length of all – I probably own it. What is your wardrobe obsession? I invest more in clothes than accessories. They bring me more joy!
And your favourites for the summer? Clarins’ suncare, which is the industry gold standard (clarins.co.uk);
If you could be anyone else for a day, who would it be? The Queen – there’s no one more fabulous.

INFLUE NTIA L B EAUTY EXP ERT Telling the truth is the fierce passion of Alessandra Steinherr, the beauty blogger with an enviable 167,000 Instagram followers. But what makes the creator of the Sunday Facial tick?
What attracted you to a career in beauty? Beauty is more democratic than fashion, which focuses on the ideal body shape and weight. Growing up, I never related to girls in fashion magazines, but the faces I saw were different. Beauty is more personal.
People get confused and make their own concoctions, which they’re not trained to do. The secret to great skin is being gentle. With that in mind, what products do you live and die by? Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair (esteelauder.co.uk) is my holy grail. I’m a bronzer girl, and Chanel’s Les Beighes Healthy Glow Luminous Colour (chanel.com) comes in different shades. I love a lip balm, such as Armani’s ecstasy balm (armanibeauty.co.uk), and mist, like Sarah Chapman’s Liquid Facial Resurfacer (sarahchapman.net). And Givenchy’s Noir Couture mascara (debenhams.com) is out of control.
What did working on magazines teach you? My grandmother was a haute couturier in Vienna, so I was surrounded by magazines. All I ever wanted was to be a beauty editor. I really loved mentoring my team and exchanging ideas. What you can achieve on a magazine is so diverse: from writing to styling and directing. However, it’s one-way: it’s me presenting something to the reader. What I do now with readers is two-way. I love the feedback and interaction. It wasn’t possible when I started, as Instagram didn’t exist. This is so immediate.
What are the secrets to your flawless skin? I look after it. Coco Chanel said, ‘At twenty, you have the face you were born with – and, as you get older, it’s the face you deserve.’ You have to educate yourself: just because you Google it, or your best friend uses it, doesn’t mean it’s true. The conflicting advice is overwhelming. My advice is more conservative and my Sunday Facial empowers people to make their own choices. It’s about giving but also explaining options.
What is your key message for readers? I had weight issues when I was younger, so I know what it’s like to feel unhappy. Looking after your skin and body and makeup isn’t frivolous; it’s the same as eating well and exercising. It’s your happiness and health. We all know how debilitating it is to have acne or breakouts. It cripples your confidence, no matter what other brilliant things are going on in your life. You can’t project and perform to your best. We are in a society where we have more skin issues because of stress and environmental pollution. I can reach out and help. I get back to people and feel honoured – and, if I don’t have the answer, I put my hands up. What I do, I deeply care about, as I used to be that person who suffered a lack of confidence and felt my hair wasn’t this, my body wasn’t that.
What kind of diet do you believe in? Weight issues are often emotional issues, not food issues. I used to have them, but now I’m in sync with my body. Everyone wants a quick fix and there isn’t one. Like skin, what’s right for me isn’t for everyone else. It’s a very sensitive subject and I haven’t figured out, as yet, what the most effective and responsible way to communicate this is. If you could be anyone else for a day, who would it be? Melania Trump, so I could find out what the truth is! But I admire her. Considering what she’s been through, she’s looking fantastic.
What parts of your job excite you most? I’m passionate about making a difference and so grateful for what this industry allows me to do. The way the industry evolves is exciting and dynamic. I love doing events and meeting my readers. We do so much online that I love being offline and meeting them in person.
We love your sense of style - how would you describe it? It’s quite pared-back, a bit tomboyish and, I hope, a bit chic. I wear jeans and trousers as I love to be comfortable. I love silk shirts and cashmere jumpers. I prefer to conceal, not show. I love YSL, Balenciaga, Isabel Marant, ankle boots and David Gandy M&S t-shirts!
What do you predict will be big in 2019? A move away from heavy products. Skincare is more important than makeup. Makeup is great, but it isn’t there to remedy skin issues – it’s an accessory. My philosophy is skincare first, then makeup to enhance. I struggle with poor advice being given to people to use tons of products. There is a push to active products, which can be damaging.
Are you bolder in beauty or fashion? Neither! I want to look effortless; from glowing skin, to my hair looking full of life, to the way I dress. I don’t want to look contrived.

P E RFU ME R
With bestselling fragrances, a luxury perfume house and a wonderfully distinctive style, Alberto Morillas charms us
A
s the sonnet by Elizabeth Barrett Browning opens, ‘How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…’ I ponder this when I think of esteemed Spanish perfumer Alberto Morillas. Fragrance touches us all in different ways, for different reasons – and, when it moves us like nothing else, we treasure and hang on to it for dear life. Alberto’s work is this to me. He is, in my eyes, a creative genius. The simple truth is that he is, globally, one of the most revered perfumers – so much so that his creations have probably reached you without you even knowing. He is the nose behind more than six hundred scents, including several of the biggest fragrance blockbusters of all time, such as CK One, Kenzo’s Flower, Armani’s Acqua di Gio and Code Ice, Estée Lauder’s Pleasures, Bvlgari’s Man Extreme and Bvlgari Pour Homme, Essence Narcisco Rodriguez and, more recently, Gucci’s Bloom. Then, of course, there is his fragrance house, Mizensir Genève. Morillas, like all great perfumers who go one step further to create their own line, has established a place to shine and fly without the commercial restrictions of the powerhouse brands. ‘Mizensir is my passion,’ he declares. ‘A place where I can run free and put all my emotion and energy into.’ A place, some might say, that brings out the best in him, because it’s the pure, untouched version of his talent. His fragrances – exquisite and divine like nothing I’ve ever known – make me feel, think and drift off into wonderful places. With Mizensir, I get stopped on the street and asked what I’m wearing. They, and he, are inspiring. Commercial success is wonderful but creative excellence is far more special. In this case, it originates with Morillas himself: the switch who turns on the light. These are designs conjured from
52
raw passion, not a robot in a lab. As he says, ‘You have to dream the story and the name of a fragrance through emotion.’ This is a man who goes to great lengths to ensure the people he employs are happy, believing that by caring for their wellbeing, you in turn care for the spirit of the brand. Accordingly, he has built a school for the children of his factory staff. Visually he’s as slick and suave as they come. When I meet him in London, he is in Gucci head to toe, but in a self-fashioned way that only a man of true style could pull off. He is humble yet confident, serious yet witty, and elegant yet elaborate. The flair is completed by an acquired, and wonderful, Swiss-French accent. Everybody is charmed by him. Perhaps this is because he is a family man: his company is family-run, his daughter Véronique often travels with him, and he has named a fragrance after his beloved granddaughter, Bianca. Happily married, he clearly understands women – the holy grail for any man – and jokes, ‘Women are so hard to please when creating for them. They want something to be sweet but not too sweet, floral but not too floral, fresh but not too fresh… They want it all!’ But as a huge fanbase will attest, his formulas are winning. On inspiration, he cites his heritage, growing up amid the nature of Seville. Musk is his signature note, featured throughout his collection because he believes it gives a scent volume, helping it hold a fragrance for longer. But he is quick to acknowledge the importance of technique. He has three perfumers working in Geneva, two in Paris and one in New York, to ensure the quality of his creations. I’d never asked for anyone’s autograph until meeting Morillas. I’d never wanted anyone’s autograph until I discovered Mizensir and met him. He was, as expected, positively charming, signing off with ‘avec passion!’. As he declared, ‘Fragrance is the medication of the soul. It makes one feel better. All I’m trying to do is make people feel not only good, but better.’

cting was the only time I felt true, pure happiness,’ declares Wallis Day. ‘I just want to be happy, so I chased it.’ Towering in heeled boots, dressed head to toe in black, there is nothing willowy about the British actress. But the sartorial edginess is tempered by a platinum blonde pixie cut and an easygoing vibe.
Day attended the Stagecoach Performing Arts centre in Oxford at the age of five, proceeding to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, then Arts Educational in London. After recurring TV roles in Hollyoaks and Jekyll & Hyde, her first big-screen gig was the 2016 romcom Between Two Worlds. Since then, it’s been nothing but up for this rock star. She joined Joan Collins and Elizabeth Hurley in The Royals and now plays Nyssa-Vex – junior magistrate and evolving badass – in the Syfy channel’s Superman-inspired series, Krypton. ‘I love the show,’ Day enthuses, ‘and Nyssa is such a wonder to play.’ Reports suggest that the martial-arts-trained star insists on doing her own stunts – little surprise, as physical fitness is no stranger to her. She was trained and ready to swim at the 2012 Summer Olympics, but traded the competition for acting. ‘I try and keep physically fit generally,’ the twenty-three-year-old notes. ‘But I make sure my trainer and I stop sparring a few months before filming to avoid serious injuries. It’s in our contracts that we can’t do certain things while filming, which can be frustrating. However, if I know I’ve got a choreographed fight scene coming up, I will go through it at half the speed in the days leading up to it, just to make sure it’s ingrained – so, on the day, I can focus on my facial expressions and my lines, rather than the movement.’ It’s all about preparation. ‘I switch my phone off, hide from the world, forget Wallis Day and start living the life my character would,” she says. “Whether that’s sneaking into movie theatres, going to the gym twice in one day, sitting in a library, jumping trains or eating things I hate. I like to do it and put myself in these positions to know how they feel and what drives them to be this way.’ Day splits her time between London and LA, making for a lot of long-haul flights. She had just landed the day before the MINE shoot, yet looked the picture of perfection, with flawless skin and style. What’s her secret? ‘I drink lots and lots of water, keep hydrated on flights and always do sheet masks when I get off,’ she reveals. ‘I also wear SPF on my face every single day, without fail. The sun is definitely the worst thing for your skin.’ With ‘love, health and happiness’ as her priorities, you can expect that whatever she does has her heart and soul in it.

hat was your vision for 1508 London? 1508 was set up in 2008 as high-end design studio. The idea was a collaborative, ambitious team of architects and interior designers, who could create and deliver exceptional projects. Our ultimate aim is, of course, to create beautiful spaces. But we also understand the importance of people and strive to have a positive impact on their wellbeing with our spaces. We think of ourselves as storytellers: interpreting each client’s personality and the character, history and location of the property; and weaving these strands together to produce a unique and perfectly tailored design. Each project is an opportunity to create something new – and we encourage clients to take part in the journey with us, so they help shape the end result. What special skills does your team have? We have a talented team of sixty, including architects, interior designers and FF&E (furniture, fixtures and equipment) specialists. This enables us to build teams according to specific project requirements, so we can take on almost any design, large or small, from concept to completion, including architectural and interior projects. We also have experienced architectural technicians who assist with the more technically complex projects.
Do you have ways to help clients visualise the end result? 1508 London has always sought innovative ways to realize our clients’ visions. One way of achieving this is with virtual reality. Our clients’ fast-paced lifestyles, tight schedules and frequent business travel
83

mean they don’t always have the time to attend viewings during the design process. So virtual reality allows them to enjoy the viewing experience in their own time, in the comfort of their own homes, or while travelling. We often find CGI is the most productive way to present our concepts and obtain accurate feedback, to move forward with the design process. How do you approach a residential project compared to your hospitality projects? At the beginning of the process, we spend as much time as possible understanding the site context and getting to know our client and project. Every client has different aspirations and requirements, so they always give us fresh inspiration. We also research the architecture, and the immediate and wider locality, as we believe every project should have a sense of place. This pyramid of elements forms the foundation for every project, then we go on a journey to create something innovative that responds to the brief. What do you look to achieve when working on such fantastic projects as The Lanesborough Club and Spa? Our projects are very diverse, but our spa and private members’ club for the Lanesborough hotel was particularly interesting. The challenge was to create a club that echoed the Regency period of the hotel while introducing modern, experimental elements, to create a very original space. Equally, we have wonderful private clients who are also really fun to work with. We love it when clients come to us with interesting ideas and challenges. How do you negotiate the listed properties and dos and don’ts of working in London? Navigating the planning process can be a challenge but it’s one we relish. We write new chapters for spaces, adding new twists with design updates and references to period details. You can wander through each room of a project for reminders of how powerful it is to marry the past and present in interior design. Is it easier to work from a blank canvas or with a client who has a clear vision? You’re always learning so many things; be it about people – clients or other designers; about business; and obviously about design. The biggest lesson is to be collaborative with your client and within your studio. You can’t be too dictatorial. What are your next residential and hospitality projects? Among our high-end projects soon to complete are the first phase of Chelsea Barracks, and the redevelopment of a Lowndes Square property previously owned by Roman Abramovich. How do you see interiors moving forward? We take real pride in our work and are passionate about design, ignoring any supposed trends. Each project is an opportunity to create something new. 1508london.com

Fairm ont M a ldives , Shaviyani Atoll
The problem with the Maldives – if ‘problem’ is the word – is that it’s hard to stand out from the crowd. A new island may well boast the same soft white sand, clear turquoise waters and almost unimaginably ideal landscape as the others. However, fortune favours the brave – so we applaud Fairmont for breaking new ground, literally, on the freshly constructed Sirru Fen Fushi in the Shaviyani Atoll. Amid one of the Maldives’ largest lagoons, this resort is the very definition of barefoot chic: local produce, traditional spa treatments and glamorous beach-inspired décor. Think Miami with a touch of Ibiza – thick white paint, huge teal Aztec-style doors and pretty lanterns bound with rope. Yet there’s all-out luxury where it matters: the food, the service and the villas’ vast proportions; each boasts a private pool and unobscured view. There is also an underwater sculpture museum – a first for the Maldives – created by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor; a luxury tented villa in a lush, starlit grove, for those who can bear to leave the water villa for a night; and an art studio for those who wish to capture the view. A standout arrival indeed. fairmont.com/Maldives
Villa L a Coste, Provence Art, as Picasso once so wisely noted, ‘washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.’ It exercises a profoundly beneficial effect on human happiness and wellness, awakens the mind and invigorates the spirit. And so to Villa La Coste, an achingly cool boutique hotel, bursting with art, architecture and sculpture by some of the biggest names. You’ll find etchings by Tracey Emin and paintings by Damien Hirst in the suites; a hotel bar designed by rising star André Fu; and an art centre conceived by Tadao Ando that serves as a welcoming point. Nestled deep in the heart of rolling hills, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards dating back to 1682, Villa La Coste is a true escape from life. This year, until November, its spa hosts retreats that include Bodhimaya, yoga and craniosacral therapy. All are led by world-class experts with more than 20,000 hours of experience in their fields. Aimed at those seeking a ‘stronger energetic foundation’, these retreats promise to ground and rebalance those in need of a sense of peace. That’s all of us, then… villalacoste.com

Six Senses Kaplankaya , Milas If the Turkish Riviera isn’t on your radar, it should be. This beautiful area of southwest Turkey – often dubbed the Turquoise Coast – has quietly amassed a collection of seriously luxe hotels. All take advantage of white sand beaches, the warm and astonishingly bright Aegean Sea, and stunning mountain scenery. The Six Senses Kaplankaya, just a short hop from the ultrachic port city Bodrum, opens in May. Surrounded by hills clad in evergreens, rugged rocks, wild olive trees and cypresses, secluded golden beaches and azure waters, the resort promises the most revitalizing respite. Within the Six Senses are some of the most extensive and advanced spa and wellness offerings imaginable: there are steam, ice and crystal rooms; hydrotherapy pools; a private Watsu pool; and, naturally, a traditional Turkish hamman that will banish any city toxins you’re harbouring. If you can bear to leave, you’ll find within easy reach many cultural heritage sites, including two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, in Bodrum, and the Temple of Artemis, in Selçuk. Chewton Glen, Hampshire
An impeccable wooded drive – pure English nostalgia – is a perfect introduction to what awaits at Chewton Glen. With a lengthy list of awards to its name, this hotel is a lesson in quintessential countryside glamour: traditional, yet fun and unstuffy. The décor is relaxed and comfy – think open log fires, velvet sofas, bathrooms filled with Molton Brown and tubs big enough to sink in. Alternatively you can stay in glamorous treehouses, with underfloor heating, log burners and panoramic views over New Forest National Park. You can even bring the dog. There are heated pools indoors and out, Europe’s largest hydrotherapy pool and a spa with cold drench showers, aromatherapy saunas and crystal steam rooms. You may find the days simply melting away as you submerge yourself in the various experiences. Otherwise, borrow wellies (Hunter, naturally) and go for a stomp around the glorious rolling hills of the New Forest, or simply kick back in the spa – which is obviously what you wanted to do anyway. At dinner, clients are politely asked to wear dinner jackets, adding a sense of occasion to one of the best dining experiences outside London. Cleverly presented dishes are largely sourced from the hotel’s gardens. Heaven. chewtonglen.com

In a tiny but vibrant fishing village on Bahia’s coast in Brazil, this eco-chic retreat is straight out of the pages of Elle Decor or Vogue Living. Owned by Wilbert Das, the former creative director of Diesel, its attention to detail is breathtaking, and each room is carefully edited to showcase a rare sense of colour and style. With an ethos of sustainability at its core, UXUA places its guests among local families in the heart of the centuries-old Trancoso village. There are ten casas, ranging from a lovingly restored fisherman’s cottage to an opulent treehouse, complete with a swing, hammock and hot tub. An organic spa is on site, while the rustic beach lounge – built from local wood and clay, and specialising in pineapple and ginger caipirinhas – will make you fantasise about quitting your job and living off coconut water and fresh badejo fish for the rest of your days. uxua.com

Think you know all there is to know about the sun, sea and sand of Spain? Think again. By Elle Blakeman
ME Sitges Terramar
I
Clockwise from above: swimming, drinking, relaxing and dining at ME Sitges Terramar
sn’t it fabulous when something comes along to disrupt your long held beliefs, opening your eyes to a new way of thinking? If you ask most British people about Spain, they’ll say they know the drill: Barcelona for the culture, Majorca for the white-sand beaches, Ibiza for those nights best not remembered and Benidorm if you’ve had a lobotomy. But of course that’s nonsense. Spain is bursting with hidden gems: the empty beaches of Viveiro, the castles and cathedrals of Trujillo, and the positively Roman views of Segovia. And so to Sitges, a vibrant coastal town in Spain’s Catalonia region – just sixteen minutes drive from Barcelona – that has somehow remained largely under the radar. Backed by the mountainous Parc Natural del Garraf – a pleasingly Mediterranean landscape of wild olive and fig trees and margalló, and boasting pristine beaches where the elegant seafront promenade is lined with grand mansions, it should be added to your Iberian travel list. The old town houses a bustling collection of shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, which give it a fun, buzzy vibe without turning it into a ‘spring break’-style destination. And it’s here that the Meliá group has opened a first property on the Catalan coast, building on the success of its hotels in Ibiza and Majorca. Taking a prime position on the beachfront, the hotel has plumped for rustic, barefoot-chic décor – think a thatched roof, four-poster cabana beds and bleached wood. The Beso Beach Club – a new incarnation of famed haunts in Formentera and Tulum – is where you want to be: eat delicious Basque food and sip cocktails as DJs weave a laidback ambience before sunset and slowly ramp up for late-night dancing. There’s also a great sea-view restaurant serving traditional local cuisine – including paella to die for – and a swanky yet still beachy oyster bar serving shellfish and Champagne for those in need. To switch off, the spa at ME Sitges, nestled by a large outdoor pool, provides signature massages, relaxation therapy and daily yoga classes for the more energetic. It makes you wonder what other treasures Spain is hiding… melia.com
