planning and hosting to the emotion evoked when receiving a beautiful invitation. As event planners and stylists, we are privileged to be part of all these elements – whether it's a wedding, a press launch or a private dinner, we know what it takes to create a memorable occasion. Turn to page 34 to see how we would create the dream wedding – from flowers to floral cloths; plus see cakemaker MAKI'S towering creation. Behold, fairy-tales do come true! And if you're going to throw the ultimate party, you must dress for the occasion: turn to page 62 to see SOPHIE GOODWIN'S stunning Night Fever fashion story (because sexy is the new naked), as well as AN NA BROMILOW'S ode to the silhouettes du jour (The Shape Of Things To Come, page 50). Life is full of endless decisions… where to go, who to marry and whose party to crash – the original party-girl turned good wife TAMARA BECKWITH answers these questions, and more, in her fantasy 24 hours on page 78. And for the boys… how to look cool without looking overdressed? Find out how the impeccable LEO FENWICK does it, and what Hogan's SIMON HOLLOWAY is coveting now. And finally, while Fashion Week and our busy itinerary keep us Londonlocked, we're living vicariously through Instagram darling ALICE BIBBEY – who travels the world in style, even with a baby on board. Proof that one should never compromise on fabulous. Enjoy the issue.

Luxury jeweller Harry Winston has this ability to make any gemstone in demand, and wildly fashionable again. The new Secrets collection (which reworks the brand’s best archive stuff, and includes everything from drop earrings to pendants, bracelets and rings), brings aquamarine boldly to our attention. A glorious looking sparkler, all the heavyweights have fallen for its charm: Tiffany & Co, Boodles, Fabergé, Chaumet, Bulgari... it will offset any colour eyes and emphasise virtually every skintone – it’s modern and traditional all in one. But, most importantly, it says, ‘I know exactly what I’m doing.’ Diamonds? Move over. There’s a new kid in town…

Now is NOT the time for a serious clutch bag. Harness your silliest self and go for slogans, bright colours, stripes, chevrons, glitz, jazz and sparkle. For once, we don’t want black, elegant and understated – these bags are all-singing, all-dancing and unapologetically screaming for our attention. Anya Hindmarch, Charlotte Olympia, Kotur and Edie Parker are leaders of the pack, so show off your sense of humour and think witty and wonderful. It’s also an easy way to bring a classic outfit bang up to date and is an excellent topic of conversation at a cocktail party.

HOGAN'S RUN

As Creative Director at Hogan, Simon Holloway knows a thing or two about sporty cool. But at home he switches up monochrome rigour with classic details, and a touch of playful sparkle. He talks to Charlotte-Anne Fidler about the shoes in his life and his beautiful workspace

What would you say were your favourite menswear and womenswear shoes of all time? I’m an unapologetic classicist. For men: a beautiful, shiny black brogue. Very British. Very masculine. y family ’s pretty creative, but I have no formal background in design. In fact, I didn’t know a thing about furniture when I started this business. Obviously, I’ve learnt a lot, but I still just go for what I like and what I think the industry needs. I can identify a great product a mile away, and I never compromise on quality. And I do love pretty things! You name it, I’ve done it… I’ve been in catering, hotels, restaurants, conference and events planning, wedding planning, so Great Hire was really a natural evolution. I saw a gap in the market when I first came to London [from Canada]. I was certain I wasn’t the only person who wanted good, design-led, top-quality furniture to hire. And I was right! I simply provided what people wanted. I star ted with just 300 chairs. I bought a consignment of Philippe Starck Ghost chairs (pictured) one day, went home and told my husband that I’d started a business. His first question was, where was I going to put them? I hadn’t even thought about that yet. If I’d given the logistics of this business

private life. It’s all mixed up, I just don’t go overboard on any of it. My husband and I work together, friends and family are always around… It’s all jumbled up into one big pot of life. For me, there’s nothing like sitting on a beach, or skiing down a mountain, or having dinner in a fabulous city, while thinking about the next chair or colour or fabric. It’s all part of who I am. I’d go crazy on holiday if I had no emails to check or new product ideas to mull over! You hear so many horror stories about starting a business, but on the whole I’ve only had good experiences. British people are so polite, everyone was happy about what I was doing. I got an order for chairs on the first day I told the industry they were available. I didn’t even have business cards yet. It doesn’t get much easier than that. And we’ve grown every year since we started and had no major setbacks yet – fingers crossed! I don’t pretend to know it all. Yes, I am hands-on in both our offices [in London and Miami], but I’m a great delegator, too. I give my team freedom to make decisions. I really think by challenging people and letting them think for themselves, you get the best out of them. I have the best people in the business, no doubt about that. Being creative isn’t enough. All the elements of your business have to work. I have to take care of the practicalities – there’s no point having all this beautiful furniture if we can’t afford to deliver and maintain it.

...Fairy-tale W

hen it comes to beautiful weddings, By Appointment Only Design know a little something or two. Most clients don't come with a vision, but they all come with one thing… be it a dream, or a feeling that they want to evoke. From this, Anthony Marklew and Javier Salvador of By Appointment Only Design listen, question, demonstrate, sketch and then, when it counts, deliver. Tony and Javier, and their small but dedicated team, succeed in transforming a space from drab to fab. Where brides-tobe take inspiration from a colour, Tony and Javier look at the venue – the rooms, the architecture, the light that floods through the windows, and how this changes during the day – and then come up with something truly magical. "In the process to piece together all the different ideas a client has, we ask them to write a list of words," says Javier. "Not wedding-related words, necessarily – we want childhood memories, anecdotes from

Shot at the unique and awe-inspiring Aynhoe Park in Oxfordshire, the venue captured the boys' imaginations from the moment they arrived. It was evident that owner James Perkins had a passion for the place; his love for art, heritage, and modern glamour is clear from the furniture, the objects, even the service. "The inspiration behind the shoot itself was to create that dream we all crave," says Tony. And it shows. Imagine immersing yourself in a world where the daily stress is left behind. From the sun filtering through the sash windows onto the abundance of florals to acres of cascading tulle‌ every detail, every moment and every thought has been considered. At every By Appointment Only Design event, no thought is untouched; every moment, every minute, every thought, the boys will have already considered for the client, before she has even considered it herself. So what is the lynchpin to these stunning events? "Hard work and passion are the building blocks to creating a memorable day," says Javier. "That, and dreamy florals to complement the look. Show-stopping displays of blooms will fill the room and bring the party to life."

This Architecture Cake by Maki (makiscakes.com) is a feat of sugar work and skill. The structure emulates that of the venue, while the freshflower embellishment from By Appointment Only Design emphasises the fairy-tale aesthetic of the day

es, we all want to smell nice. But sometimes a quick spritz of parfum doesn’t quite cut it. Insides of the wrists, rub; nape of the neck, dab – it has become so ingrained… we crush the stories of those fragrancemakers between our wrists (oh, the shame!), and those scents, their labours of love, fade as quickly as an old memory. Now more than

NATO WE LTO N

ever, it takes something rather

BYE BYE

unusual, something quite clever, for us to stop and take stock of our scent. These are those 'somethings'…

S P R I T Z... 74

ON A ROLL

We’re talking roller-balls. Specifically, Byredo’s L'Huile Parfum, £47, which are just about the smartest little vials we’ve come across: slim, clear glass with that thrillingly simple font stamped on the front. These babies go with you anywhere, any time, in any bag, and they’re a dream to apply. Try them. At the traffic lights, under the table, with your eyes closed. The best bit? No one even knows you’re doing it. There’s no billowing cloud of scent to give the game away, no hefty glass stopper to uncork. They’re delightfully discreet. Diptyque’s Solid Perfume, £28, which is a waxy formula in a pleasingly weighty compact, is also worth a whirl.

SU D ’S L AW

Applying our scent should be fun. Probably the most ingenious (and, coincidentally, most childish), way of scenting that’s ever landed in our laps has to be Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Les Bulles D’Agathe, £15: dinky bottles, filled to the brim with soapy, sudsy ‘scent’ – like cut grass, or violet. Simply blow through the accompanying wand (on your skin, on the dog, anywhere!). They’re out of stock in the UK, but luckily you can pick them up in the States.

PAP E R P E R F ECTI ON

No one wants to spend time en avion rummaging around their hand luggage looking for the mini-sized, less-than-

100ml sample of scent that they picked up in duty free. Not when they could be pressing all those buttons on the whizzy chair and ordering numerous spicy tomato juices. No, what you want are the Hermès Refreshing Tissues, £19. Like wet wipes, but far more chic, they smell of citrus and green leaves – so they’re excellent for deflecting nausea, too. And, when you arrive at your destination, quickly find a place to stow your Hermès Cheval Origami, £52 for four. A miniature origami horse, which travels in a neat envelope, it scents your suitcase, takes the edge of the stale smell of air conditioning… basically makes everything smell better. 75

BEAUTY

MAT E R I AL GIR LS

Perfumer Azzi Glasser swears by scenting her scarves (wool and cashmere hold on to a scent beautifully). You could go to town with your EDT, and spritz all the clothes in your wardrobe – a word of advice: NEVER attempt to spray silk, your dry-cleaner will not thank you – or you could be a bit cleverer. You could bury a block of rubber incense, try Frederic Malle's Rubber Incense, £70 (far left, top) in with your drawers. Or perhaps try washing your clothes in your preferred fragrance. We love Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Laundry Detergent Aqua Universalis, £32 (left). (Well, it blows boring old Ecover out of the water.) And for those who simply have neither the time or the inclination to do their own washing, buy your accessories prescented. At Guerlain Maison you will find inspired accoutrements (far left), such as silk scarves and wonderfully soft leather gloves, all impregnated with scent (POA).

C HILD'S P L AY

With your clothes sorted, how about your children? Bonpoint got in on the act years ago, when it asked Annick Goutal to come up with its house fragrance, Eau de Bonpoint, £61 for 100ml. In the range is a specially formulated EDT for babies, sans alcohol (£59 for 100ml). But why stop there? Look closer in stores, and you’ll spy skincare, from £29 (for grown-ups as well as smalls), which has that same orange blossom scent – think powdery, delicate, baby’s-bottom-clean. So now your face can match your wrists. And for the rest of your body, Jo Malone now does its best-selling scents (Lime, Basil & Mandarin; Blackberry & Bay; Peony & Blush Suede) in a Shower Oil, £32 (right) – happy days. Or why not play with Byredo’s Parfum Pour Cheveux, £37 (far right). It’s been formulated specifically for hair, so it won’t strip it, soak it, leave it sticky or gluey or alarmingly flammable. It mists on, it leaves a trail of people quite infatuated in your wake, and, surprisingly, it lasts. All night. Which is the point, ultimately, isn’t it? 76

s a scion of the Fenwick family (yes, of the überstylish department store fame), it’s no surprise

that Leo Fenwick is a snappy dresser. What is something of a surprise, though, is quite how good-looking he is – like a cartoon version of 'tall, dark and handsome' brought to life. As Fenwick’s Head of Brand Communications, Leo is in charge of reinvigorating the 133-yearold brand and communicating their story to overseas customers, which means lots of meetings and lots of different outfits. Luckily, he’s never had to look far for clothing inspiration. "I am surrounded by people with style and I’ve always loved clothes," says Leo. A DAY AT THE RACES In the autumn, I would wear a tweed suit or a sports jacket and flannels with brown shoes. In summer, it’s nice to wear a lightweight suit. But for Ascot, I always wear a grey morning coat and top hat. A FIRST DATE A first date is all about feeling confident, so you have to feel good in what you’re wearing. I would go for a low-key but fun place on a first date – often that means jeans and a T-shirt or a denim shirt by RRL. A COCKTAIL PARTY I recently had an olive-green suit made by Terry Haste, which I like to wear in the summer. A dark suit with an open shirt in pale blue or white is always a safe option, and I’d add a Drake's tie at Fenwick if it’s a more formal affair. WIMBLEDON Incotex chinos, an Emma Willis shirt and a Boglioli jacket, both at Fenwick (but I would wear a suit if it’s a corporate day or the final). And sunglasses – I love Francis Klein glasses from Paris. A WEDDING A dark grey morning suit by Terry Haste in a medium weight, so I can wear it all year round. I think grey is very elegant. If it’s black tie in the evening, then a midnight-blue dinner jacket. A NIGHT OUT IN IBIZA I wear a variation of the same thing each summer: this year, I wore sky-blue Common Projects sliders, Barena trousers and a James Perse T-shirt at Fenwick

Is there anything that Becky Fatemi can’t do? The superwoman of the property world made Foxtons a whopping £15million over the eleven years that she worked there (and went down in history as their best sales person ever); she’s organised epic parties for the likes of Naomi Campbell, Rihanna and Jay Z; she speaks four languages – French, Spanish, Persian and English – and she launched her very own agency, Rokstone , four years ago, selling £50million properties to Central London’s most elite buyers. As the founder and creative director of fashion’s favourite caterer, Cellar Society, Bertie de Rougemont has used his impeccable taste to help create some of the most talked-about events in the industry. With

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT Cellar Society's notoriously attractive waiting staff; dinner served on unmade beds at the Saatchi Gallery; Bertie de Rougemont

a client list from Prada to Chanel, Cellar Society even did the food at Kate Moss’s wedding, which included a tower of 500 champagne flutes – “It's one of our closely guarded secrets, but it always looks spectacular” – and one alarmingly good-looking waiter to every five guests. Bertie has also organised parties for Rihanna, Beyoncé and Bill Clinton. But the weirdest occasion he’s ever catered for involved serving dinner out of unmade beds – Tracey Emin style – at the Saatchi Gallery. There were no waiting staff to be seen and it took guests a while to pluck up the courage to help themselves to the Champagne and oysters on display. “In the end, they devoured plates of langoustine, poached salmon and entire honey-roasted hams using their hands. It was wild!” For an event at the Monaco Grand Prix, Cellar Society served a 196kg tuna caught two days earlier. It was three metres long, and two top sashimi chefs were flown in from Tokyo to turn the fish into a five-course menu in front of guests. “All that was left at the end of evening was the skeleton, with eyes the size of teacups. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed.” And for Alexander McQueen’s Frieze dinner, Bertie hosted a candlelit Georgian feast at Christ Church in Spitalfields. 150 VIP guests sat at two 18th-century mahogany tables dressed with antique silverware, as 50 male models – clad in McQueen clan tartan – served dinner. The menu featured fresh lobster, langoustines, mussels and clams from Brancaster in Norfolk, as well as Colchester native oysters, roast mallard with blackberries, whole saddles of venison, ribs of Angus beef and roast penny buns (ceps) from the New Forest. Amazingly this entire set-up started at home in Bertie’s spare room 15 years ago. He’d had enough

decided to branch out. Now they have a full-time staff of 30, which includes Bertie's wife, Andie, business partner, Adam, and head chef, Carole, who is Bertie’s mother-in-law. They haven’t created this client list without hard work and high standards. Linen has to look like it’s been sprayed on, tableware must be symmetrical (there are rumours that staff measure out place settings with tape measures), and everything on the table is hand polished. “OCD is a plus at Cellar Society. It’s all in the detail. We have three golden rules: you are here to serve, never assume anything and always put yourself in the shoes of the guest.” When the waiters are all so beautiful, the first rule could be a sticking point. But Bertie insists ability, manners and charm are all as important as looks, and there is a very specific programme to make sure all staff are up to scratch. “Our boys do get chatted up by clients, and have, in the past, found phone numbers in their pockets at the end of service! But while they are encouraged not

T H E M A N F R O M AY N H O E Aynhoe Park is one of the UK's most-coveted venues, with its bonkers interiors – not to mention the taxidermy! MINE meets owner James Perkins

ith a background in the music industry, James Perkins has experience with parties and events. He is also an award-winning restorer of historic properties. And at Aynhoe Park, his home in Oxfordshire, these skills come together perfectly. Perkins has transformed the interiors of the Georgian stately home, which features original rooms designed by Sir John Soane. With his collection of eccentric curiosities – a dandy selection of taxidermy, sculpture and art – Perkins’ prized plaster works are a clear homage to Soane and one of the most significant collections in private hands. His favourite room? “My library. With the full-size unicorn, amazing red judge’s chair and Aston Martin DBR1 suspended behind the desk.” The works unfold room by room, creating astonishing contrasts – like the taxidermy giraffe suspended by helium balloons in The Orangery, which is illuminated by the reflections of oversized mirror balls. Realising that this extraordinary environment should be shared, Perkins has made Aynhoe Park available to hire on an exclusive basis; it sleeps up to 40. “People rent out the whole house for an entire weekend for weddings or big parties. The wackiest event we’ve ever hosted was an Alice In Wonderland-themed party. There was a burning effigy of a giant rabbit in the garden, which was 30ft high. The house is completely theatrical – a fantasy, whether you like it or not.” For more information, visit aynhoepark.co.uk 117

CHALET GIRL

Interior designer Brigitta Spinocchia Freund's modern, sophisticated take on 'ski chalet' is anything but freestyle I NTER VIE W BY CHARLO T T E - ANNE F IDL E R 119

s Creative Director for developers Candy & Candy, Brigitta Spinocchia Freund designed superyachts, private jets and some of the most luxurious homes in the world. Now that she’s launched her own practice, she’s taking a more personalised approach, but the focus is still on elegance and unique design. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think this [pictured] was the home of a very glamorous Bond villain! What kind of people live here? Ha! Ha! They’re far from villains! They’re young and fun – they have real joie de vivre. And they have a lot of children. They wanted a chalet that felt homely and comfortable. But they also wanted very cool spaces to entertain in. How does that affect the interior design and layout? We created spaces for wine tasting, large dinner parties and a space for après ski with a pool, Jacuzzi and steam room all lined in Nero Marquina marble slabs. And the bar has a recessed section on the top that can be filled with snow – and room for 20 shot glasses – so the vodka is always cold! We hung a 5m chandelier above it, dripping with thousands of selenite [mineral] icicles.

Bespoke features include floor-to-ceiling, temperaturecontrolled wine stores

What would you call the overall colour palette used in this house? I think the description 'earthy' is good! We always look at the environment a project sits in. With this chalet, we drew on the colours of the surrounding 121

forest and mountain-scape. The rust reds and bronze add warmth. What happens in the huge main room? The entire ground floor is open-plan, with amazing views and a double-height ceiling over the seating areas. It’s another entertaining space, so we had to plan it carefully – thinking about how many people would use it, and where they could all sit. In the end, we created two ‘conversation’ areas, centred around the fireplace – and there’s a family kitchen, which they use for informal breakfasts or lunches. Tell us about the epic fireplace. It looks like a Birch tree rising up through the centre of the house… That was the idea! We used lots of natural inspiration in the chalet. It’s made from textured plaster and inlaid bronze. And it’s the focal point of the room – a place for people to gather, as well as keep warm. They can sit on the hearth all the way around, which keeps things informal. Those L-shaped sofas really invite settling in after a long day skiing… We take comfort very seriously! We prototyped them twice and actually measured the client (who is pretty tall) to make sure it was comfortable. There are two types of cushions – a memory foam for the seat cushion and softer duck down for the back cushions. It’s upholstered in a nubuck buffalo skin which is amazing to the touch and really robust. A floor-to-ceiling wine store and tasting table? These people are, obviously, serious oenophiles… The owner is a huge wine collector, so a wine cellar was a must. This one stores over 400 bottles, with each bottle electronically coded so that the client can keep tabs on their evergrowing (or decreasing!) collection. The wine-tasting bench was our suggestion. It’s made from a blackened half cedar log, which we hand-selected for the property. The stools are inspired by French 20th-century designer Paul Dupré-Lafon, and upholstered in old vintage hides.

With a wraparound view like this in the dining room, you’re never going to be short on conversation. We found that the square table works better than a round table in this space. It expands, but it’s sized so that you can still have conversations across the table. Interestingly, the show-stopping chandelier is as much of a conversation piece as the view… True, that icicle chandelier is fabulously eccentric… tell us where you found it. That is actually my favourite feature of this project. We had so much fun creating it. We sourced the selenite ‘icicle’ crystals from Morocco’s Atlas

"R OOMS CAN

ITE MS AD D A B IT OF F UN !"

Mountains and hung them from cast bronze branches. Its pair hangs over the seating area in the main room. Even the powder room is an event. Are those leather walls? And what’s the fabulous stone of the sink? The walls are clad in wrapped nubuck panels stitched together with leather laces. The vanity unit is made from solid amber onyx, lit from within to give a gorgeous glow. Your rooms are so elegant and meticulously finished, but there’s often an ornate piece – like the chandeliers and gold coffee table. Why do you like to bring them into the mix? With this chalet, we didn’t want anything to compete with the winter 122

wonderland outside the windows, so we kept things quite simple yet beautifully detailed. Even so, rooms can look a little sterile if they are too pared back, so a decorative item, like the chandeliers, add personality and a bit of fun to a space. Despite the glamour of the living areas, the bedrooms are surprisingly cosy. How did you create this effect? We used very soft, cosy fabrics on the bedding and throws from our Italianmade SF range [Spinocchia Freund's new linen range]. Even the curtains are made with cashmere and wool blends. And we used a lot of natural materials, like wood and leather. And the colours – earthy browns and reds – add warmth and softness. How do you make a bed look inviting? Well, we only use the top thread counts. It’s all made-to-order, so each bedroom’s linen had customised borders to tie in the other fabrics in the room. We add toppers and two flat sheets and feather and down duvets to make things supercosy. And I always put six pillows at the back, ranging from hard, through medium to soft. The hard ones are for watching TV; the soft ones are for sleeping. The bunk-bed room is so cosy. Do guests fight over who’s sleeping here? This room is for the kids – though we’re creating more in other chalets for adults! – and was such fun to design. We had small storage holes created for each bunk, where the guests can charge their phone or plug in their iPads. So, what’s the one word you’d use to describe your signature style? I don’t think I can use one word! So, I’d say, elegant, chic, eclectic. Eclectic because I like to mix old and new – antique pieces with the bespoke pieces we produce. And I’d say personal, too. We spend a lot of time getting to know how our clients like to live, so we really understand what their needs are. We think of ourselves as design dream weavers! BEST POOL PARTY If you fancy a pool party, whatever the time of year, the most fabulous place to have it has to be The Haymarket Hotel, London. Guests are allowed to use the pool but if you fancy hiring it as a venue, that is also an option. The sleek 18-metre swimming pool is edged in stone and surrounded by stylish grey oak, so you can float in serenity gazing up at hundreds of fibre-optic lights in the ceiling. To get the party started, there is a pewter bar serving some of the best cocktails in town as well as a super-cool and ever-changing light installation by Martin Richman. And why not check into one of the hotel's 50 bedrooms and suites? Or better yet, The Townhouse. With a private entrance and VIP amenities, it's easy to understand why it’s the accommodation of choice for Hollywood stars. B O O K I T: f i r m d a l e . c o m

BEST INSANE SUITE PARTY The Ritz London is one of the few hotels in the world that instantly evokes a sense of awe. Quintessentially British, from the moment you arrive you will be treated like the royalty you are following in the footsteps of. Smartly attired doormen whisk away your luggage while you ascend the glamorous steps to one of the city's most famous hotels, thanks to its enviable history. Pavlova the Russian ballerina danced here; Churchill, De Gaulle and Eisenhower met in the Marie Antoinette Suite during WWII, and the hotel was the first (and only, to date) to receive a Royal Warrant from his Royal Highness The Prince of Wales in 2002. Inside, it is like an exquisite jewellery box – rich colours and tasteful gold surrounds you, as does the distant chink of porcelain cups being set in their saucers. However, the real magic is the suites. This is where history with all its twinkling chandeliers and antique furniture meets modernity – and every need is preempted. If you stay in one of the three Signature Suites you will also have access to a full-time Ritz butler. But quite frankly, butler or not, you will never want to leave – this is the ultimate place to party in decadent style, and privacy! B O O K I T: t h e r i t z l o n d o n . c o m 128

TRAVEL BEST FOODIE PARTY Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at The Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park London is on pretty much every foodie’s wish-list. Blumenthal and his executive chef, Ashley Palmer-Watts, spent years pouring over books in The British Library and consulting food historians to come up with a truly inspired gastronomic concept. They have created an innovative menu with intriguing nods to Britain’s culinary history – and the result is sensational. But if you want something extra special, book the Chef ’s Table (below). Overlooking the kitchen, the table is carved from a single piece of 200-year-old oak and will seat six of your best-loved friends. Surrounding you is a Bayeux Tapestry-inspired artwork illustrating the historical influences on the restaurant’s menu – look out for Heston and Ashley making cameo appearances in it! The menu here changes seasonally but one staple you simply must request is the Meat Fruit; a ball of chicken liver parfait encased in mandarin jelly and made to look and smell exactly like a mandarin, appropriate really given the setting! TRAVEL BEST CINEMA PARTY Cinemas don’t get much more magical than the Winter Cinema at The Berkeley roof garden. Three chalet-style cabins nestle in among fir trees, while Moncler blankets are to hand, to ensure you stay toasty. High above the London skyline, guests will be transported to a Christmas wonderland with hot chocolate and mince pies. Or upgrade to The Luxury Winter Cinema Package for Champagne and canapés. Whether you go with friends, or as a couple, this is certainly a very special cinema. B O O K I T: C a l l 0 2 0 7 2 0 1 1 6 9 9

Planning your dream day? Knowing when to splash out and when to save is key to achieving the look you want. Wedding planner Lisa Baker reveals how to get the best from your budget

T

here are sunny days ahead for the UK economy – at least if the wedding sector is anything to go by. "People are spending money again," explains Lisa Baker, founder of Just Bespoke, a luxury wedding concierge service based in the South East. "We always look to the US for the next big trends, and wedding budgets are definitely getting bigger over there." That’s not to say weddings themselves are getting bolder and brasher – it's just that the DIY vibe of the homegrown wedding, with a fish and chip supper for guests and G&Ts in jam jars, is giving way to something more sophisticated. "Right now it’s very much about personalisation," Lisa explains. "And if you

INT E RVIE W BY T E S S A CL AY T O N PO RT RAIT BY NAT O WE LT O N

140

want a truly personalised day, you have to spend a little bit more. People are looking for something that’s a little bit more "put-together'." Lisa should know. Since establishing Just Bespoke in 2009, she has orchestrated a host of high-end weddings, and counts footballers, athletes, models and other celebrities among her clients. Her USP is bringing a young, fresh vibe to the proceedings – she’s the same age as the majority of her clientele – and her access to some of the best names in floristry, music, lighting, and everything else it takes to throw an amazing party. "I like to work with real professionals, who are at the top of their game," she explains. "Having a brilliant team around you for a wedding is what makes it work." And it really does work, as the beautiful images on these pages show. After a decade of austerity, we’d all agree a little luxury is no bad thing. But when expectations are high, how do you provide a unique, memorable experience for your guests, while keeping your spending from spinning way out of control? "The key is to establishing what’s important to you," counsels Lisa. "If you’re a foodie, then you’ll want to spend more on catering, to make sure it’s totally spot-on and you’re not going to have any regrets about the day." So, it’s less about slashing your budget, and more about apportioning it wisely? "Exactly. It’s a matter of priorities. If the result is a do that says ‘you’, you wouldn’t begrudge a penny."

Gilded glamour "This was a winter wedding, and the flowers were very much a focal point," says Lisa. "It was all about creating atmosphere – the candlelight, the chandeliers, the touches of silver and gold... The look is opulent but was achievable within the budget as the couple chose to have an intimate celebration, with just 30 guests."

141

It’s showtime! "There was a real sense of theatre to this wedding, thanks largely to the spectacular lighting," says Lisa. "Hiring a wellknown band, and all the production costs involved, was another huge expense, but the bride and groom were prepared to spend big to provide their guests with a great evening of entertainment with real ‘wow’ factor."

A cool, chic scheme "Holding their wedding at home – in a bespoke marquee – was a low-cost option, which meant this couple could afford to go all-out on the styling," says Lisa. "They opted for a chic and sophisticated all-white theme. We used London suppliers, even though the wedding took place in Cambridge – but using local businesses would be a way to cut costs further." 142

LISA’S TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL WEDDING PLANNING Get organised No matter how small your event, planning a wedding can be overwhelming. Create a to-do list of tasks and decide when you want each item to be completed; ticking things off will reassure you that you’re making progress. If it all gets too much, hire a planner, who will be able to pull all the aspects of your celebration together smoothly and seamlessly.

Consider your guests Spend time working through the timings of your celebration and thinking about how your guests will experience the day. It’s easy to see your wedding as one long ‘to do’ list but the atmosphere and flow of the wedding are crucial to its success.

Hire a top team Pay for the best professionals you can afford and secure them quickly. Your wedding 143

day is likely to be the single biggest celebration you have ever hosted, so make sure you have the right suppliers on board to help bring your vision to life.

Source inspiration Create a vision board – it will be a vital reference point for your suppliers, as well as a great source of inspiration when considering flowers, lighting, tablescapes and the overall styling of your celebration. Pinterest and blogs are very useful tools.

Talk it through Discuss your wedding vision openly with your partner to ensure that you are both on the same page and working towards the same celebration. Family and friends are likely to provide some input but ultimately it is your wedding as a couple, so your ideas should be kept front of mind. For more information, visit just-bespoke.com
