Selected Design Work
Los Yoses House San Jose, Costa Rica
Designed for the Global Architecture Retreat hosted by the University of Toronto in Costa Rica. This urban getaway house was designed for a client who has an empty lot in the dense suburban neighborhood of Los Yoses in San Jose, Costa Rica. Integrating vernacular design languages, local culture, and modernism which influenced the city since the 1950s. The unique and challenging aspect of the site is the substantial grade drop between the sidewalk and the lot. The grade change is maintained by a 5 meter tall retaining wall (measured from the lowest point of the lot to the top of the wall). Another challenge is the density of the neighborhood, with houses on adjacent lots less than 1 meter to the client’s lot. The solution was to re-purpose the existing retain walls that are bounding the site and build up. Since the footprint of the site is very small, the entire sunken ground level is dedicated to an entrance garden, parking, and storage. So the entire house is elevated 2-3 meters above the surround sidewalk. A full two story high concrete lot partition wall is built on the West side of the lot (this is common in dense neighborhoods in Costa Rica) for privacy and rain control. Taking advantage of the climate, most part of the house can be opened to become semi outdoor spaces. A dense sheet of chain-link wraps around the entire elevated portion of the building to ensure privacy but still allow airflow and outdoor connections. The chain-link also serve as a sun screening device in addition to the shading providing by the offsetting of the architectural form. To enter the house, one would ascend through a dramatic entrance foyer that is narrow and tall. The space opens up at the main living level, with a protected outdoor hallway that wraps around the perimeter of the level, cradling the living and kitchen area . The master bedroom is on the upper level with smaller window openings for sunlight and rain control. The upper level also features a study with built-in murphy bed which can doubles as a guest bedroom when needed.

The design uses locally available materials that are proven to be suitable for the rainy and hot climate of San Jose. The primary structural material is a type of elongated CMU that are produced in San Jose. They are of sleeker proportions and are versatile in its use. Steel columns, corrugated metal roofing, and reinforced concrete are also used throughout the design.

The Bridle Path Estate Toronto, Canada
A massive spread-out estate designed for the various lifestyles of a multi-generation household, situated in the private and serene Bridle Path. The house design pays homage to the Neoclassical style, one of many styles that forms the hidden suburban fabric of the Bridle Path neighbourhood. The main level of the house features all of the luxuries of modern living and dining for large gatherings, as well as the main suite of the matriarch and guest suites. The upper level is designed for the daughter’s family, featuring a family room, a secondary main suite, and children’s bedrooms. The basement houses the lavish entertainment area and the underground garage.

Park Lane Circle Estate Toronto, Canada
One of two massive estates designed to be side by side. An aesthetically simple Art Deco inspired modern home designed to be nestled into the sloping terrain of the Bridle Path neighbourhood. The design attempts to minimize its scale facing the street, while capitalizes on the sloping grade in the back to maximize the “above ground” spaces. On the ground level, 2 one-level wings extend forward, one of them being the above ground carport, the other being the event space. The 2 wings meet the main 2-storey mass of the building to create a formal, grand entry courtyard. Towards the back of the building as the grade descends, the below grade program becomes exposed, culminating to a grand pool room that looks out on to the rear grounds.

Terraces on the Hill Sonoma County, California, USA
The client requested the design of a modern and minimalist house in the densely vegetated hillside of Sonoma, California. The design proposal combines the modern practicality with the charm of mid-century modernism. The site is naturally oriented towards the breath taking valley views to the North and North West. Hideaway sliding doors and expansive glazing are used to capitalize on the vista and surrounding nature. All main functions of the house must have view access to the valley. Flexible kitchen, dining, and living space allows for a various types of gatherings and patio living. An integrated infinity pool is located on the lower terrace just outside of the game room, offering privacy from the more public upper terrace which is designed for larger gatherings.

Toronto City Museum Toronto, Canada
Designed for Comprehensive Studio at the University of Toronto Master of Architecture program. This architecture project was a proposed solution that was the result of a long series of urban studies that identified some potential urban issues caused by the city’s Rail Deck Park proposal. One of the main issues identified was the height change of more than 2 storeys between the street and the park which will disconnect the two streets flanking the rail corridor. This project attempts to reinvigorate the neighbourhood while also acts to reconnect some important urban points of interest that was previously buried in the Cityplace condo developments. The site occupies a large lot marked as a future development zone on the North side of the proposed Rail Deck Park. The roof gardens of the new proposed museum matches the height of the park level of the Rail Deck Park and provides a seamless descent from the park level to the street level. Unlike conventional language of institutional architecture, this design deliberately hides the main entrance of the museum and encourages visitors to explore and journey around the outdoor sculptural gardens under the museum and on the roof of the museum via large ceremonial stairs. When visitors eventually enter the museum, they are rewarded with the grand view of the museum’s massive robotic archival hub, made out of steel and glass at the centre of the complex. The archival structure is also the main structural anchor of the surrounding wooden diagrids that make up all of the gallery spaces.
In collaboration with Brandon Bergem Role: architectural design, interior design, 3D modeling, visualizer Status: conceptual design
Public Interface The site interfaces with the public realm on multiple fronts and elevations, demanding an urbanistically minded architectural disposition for programming that is typically hermetic and introverted.
Lateral Cut Programming is displaced above and below grade to create a large protected plaza and extra continuity of Rail Deck Park as a rooftop green-space.
Plaza Rooms A distributed set of glazed rooms provide sites of structural support to the elevated building, as well as create areas of museum access, public programming and views into large object galleries, restoration spaces, etc.
Archival Object The back-of-house archival space is repositioned as an civic object central to the site, and spatially condensed using automated retrieval storage systems shifting from an expansive warehouse, to an efficient stack system, which connects the programming above and below grade.
Historic Engagement Massing is shifted such that the museum engages the heritage designated buildings as a horizontally slender gallery volume, exposing the interior structure to provide a chronological counterpoint to the contemporary spaces. At Front Street, the pulled back program contains the auditorium, now given a vantage point to the venue as a thematic backdrop.
The Pinch The two territories of public space, above and below, are architecturally pinched together creating outdoor access to and from Rail Deck Park and across the site, folding with it, its parks pace character, and distorting the elevated museum roof lines. Between the heritage building a terraced garden provides access to a new rooftop restaurant. The pinch also reveals the historic viscera of the archive to the sidewalk vantage point.

Peggy Island Cottage and Boathouse Seguin, Canada
A 4-bedroom cottage situated on a private island. The cottage is divided into 2 wings, the 2-storey bedroom wing, and a 1-storey plus basement living/kitchen wing. The subdued aesthetic of the design is a courteous addition to the lake front cottage country fabric, in it’s material choice and spread-out and low profile. The transparent nature of the fully glazed living room allows for 360-degree view of the surrounding Lake Joseph scenery.

Texas Modern Farmhouse Texas, USA
A modern ranch style house that serves as a full time home for a retired couple. The house is situated on a 30 acre treed lot. The program of the 2 bedroom main house is planned linearly, with the public functions in the centre, while more proivate rooms such as the office, guest and master bedrooms are situated on both ends. The main living space is a large open design that includes the kitchen, dining, and an informal den area. Exposed timber structure and the stone fireplace establish a warm and cozy feeling despite the spaciousness. To maximize the vast views of surrounding farms and trees, the design ustilizes large floor to ceiling glazing, and effortless indoor and outdoor flow living. Large glass doors pivot open on a modern and simple backyard patio and pool area, with outdoor cooking and lounging. To the west of the backyard, two stand-alone houses, each with 2 bedrooms and bathrooms, serve as guest houses for the client’s sons and their families. The two guesthouses also feature floor to ceiling glass doors that open up directly to the backyard living area. The project is undergoing minor updates and will soon be moving into construction documentation phase.
