tlas Copco Zambia has successfully evolved from being solely an equipment provider to become a more rounded solutions provider in response to the mining industry moving away from conventional mining towards increased mechanisation. For more than 60 years, Atlas Copco Zambia has been supplying compressors, heavy mining equipment for both surface and underground work, power tools and assembly systems to predominantly the mining industry, as well as construction and oil and gas. Refocusing to become a total solutions provider a little under a decade ago required the strengthening of the company’s service department and logistics network for the supply of spare parts and technical services as and when required. “There’s only a handful of mines in Zambia, but an abundance of suppliers,” said General Manager, Daniel Banister. “What differentiates us from our competitors is the value added we bring to a client’s organisation.” Innovative solutions Providing this value added means having to think outside the box on a daily basis, requiring a workforce 3

that’s not only technically proficient, but creatively minded. This has posed a significant challenge in the past, especially in respect to the Democratic Republic of Congo where Atlas Copco Zambia has been overseeing operations since 2006. “Increased mechanisation creates a much higher need for service technicians due to the complexity of the equipment, leading to strong competition in terms of recruitment,” Banister said. “We’ve addressed this through internal mobility within the Group, bringing in ex-pats to train those prospective locals who demonstrate the necessary

competency and talent through the interview process.” Staff development is a cornerstone of Atlas Copco’s ongoing activities, with its workforce recognised as being the organisations most important asset. Each employee receives an average of 45 hours of training, 70 percent being on the job as that’s where the skills needed are truly gained, and the remainder delivered through classroom sessions. “We have even evolved into e-learning, providing an opportunity for staff to access different modules and resources from anywhere at any time,” added Banister.

Unique ethos The culture across the Atlas Copco Group is one of a global organisation operating locally, ensuring the business is grown in a sustainable manner within regional markets. The Zambian operation has seen solid growth throughout its history, something the General Manager sees as stemming from clients’ confidence and support in its products and services. “It’s imperative that we listen to our clients’ needs and understand what their key criteria is to make decisions, be that total cost of ownership, long-term sustainability and so on,” he said. “We position
ourselves, as well as our spare parts, as close to our customers as possible, often resulting in an onsite presence.” The Zambian business activities are overseen from the Chingola headquarters and supported by offices in Kitwe and Lusaka. The DRC contingent comprises a main office in Lubumbashi, an office in Kolwezi and a new customer centre in the Katanga Province. “We want our customers to see us as ‘First in Mind, First in Choice’, our vision within the Group. We want to provide sustainable solutions whether through new technology or services; solutions which address 5

Community Sustainability doesn’t just apply to clients however, with Atlas Copco Zambia investing significant time and resources to better the lives of the surrounding populace. Corporate Social Responsibility isn’t seen as simply a requirement, with the company’s workforce involved in a number of worthwhile initiatives such as supporting the Kapisha School in Chingola over the past decade. “We’ve recently rehabilitated one of the school’s old classrooms, fitted it out with computers and transformed it into an IT suite,” Banister said. “It means pupils are exposed to computers from an early age, with an opportunity to 7

Banister is confident however, that with Zambia’s quality of copper deposits, investment in the country’s mining sector will be healthy and growth will occur. “Atlas Copco needs to ensure we are investing locally, both in terms of resources and infrastructure to capitalise on any growth,” he said. “We will expand in both
