andvik can trace its history back to the 19th century and one of the fundamental reasons for its success is its deeprooted sense of core business values. In particular, the company’s business unit, Sandvik Mining, has forged close working relationships with its customers, which comprise many of the leading mining companies in South Africa, and it takes the issues of health, safety and the environment very seriously. Lewis said: “Globally, the company makes a significant investment in research and development and that is something it maintains even during tough economic climates. If you can automate, you can remove a person from an area that has certain dangers and put him in a much safer working environment.” “There is often productivity enhancement with automated or remote controlled types of operation and ultimately that leads to an overall cost advantage, making operations safer, more productive and ultimately more sustainable.”
