November 2014
Exclusive interview with Rio Tinto’ chief executive Andrew Harding on how the company is progressing with its Mine of the Future™ program, including the introduction of automated rail systems Writ ten by: Robe rt Spe n c e

Op e r at i o n s Rio Tinto’s Mine of the Future™ is no ordinary mine strategy. In fact, it’s like nothing the mining world has ever seen. Unveiled in 2008, the futuristic program aims to change the face of mining through the use of autonomous equipment and technology only witnessed in science-fiction films. The Mine of the Future™, however, is no sci-fi fantasy film. Rio Tinto is putting the finishing touches on a group-wide initiative that involves next-generation technology and big-data utilization which will ultimately alter mining operations forever. Mining 2.0 The goal behind the Mine of the Future™ isn’t necessarily to build one autonomous mine but rather a holistic approach to find new ways to mine and extract minerals more efficiently, while also reducing environmental impact and improving safety. “Focusing on two key themes – achieving efficiency in surface mining through autonomy and improving recovery practices – the Mine of the Future™ program is aimed at mining safer, better and faster,” says Andrew Harding, chief executive 10

Rio Tinto utilizes Komatsu for its driverless trucks of Rio Tinto’s iron ore division. The Mine of the Future™ program develops step-change technologies, which include: a centralized operations center for remotely managing operations, autonomous truck haulage, autonomous train operations (AutoHaul™) and autonomous drilling. The company, which first unleashed its autonomous vehicles in 2008, currently has 54 autonomous trucks operating across three Rio Tinto mine sites in Western Australia.
Rio Tinto: Mine of the Future
Andrew Harding, CEO of Rio Tinto’s iron ore division “We commenced trials in December 2008 at West Angeles and in June 2011, five autonomous haulage trucks were moved from West Angeles operations to Yandicoogina mining operations and combined with five new trucks,” says Harding. “In July 2012 the autonomous fleet reached a milestone of hauling high grade iron ore at the Yandicoogina mine.” Rio Tinto launched its operation center in 2009, quickly progressing
to autonomous drilling and its revolutionary rail system trials in 2012. Rio Tinto’s AutoHaul™ system is expected to be up and running in 2015. The future leads to technology The key behind Rio Tinto’s Mine of the Future™ isn’t just the approach but the technology behind it. The company has compiled some of the brightest and forward-thinking minds in the industry to develop new ideas for the company’s mission. 11

Rio’s Technology & Innovation (T&I) group has been vital to the autonomous project, partnering with leading institutions such as the University of Sydney and Imperial College London to innovate new ideas and improve the program’s environmental performance. “Innovation is the key to improving recovery rates of minerals from rock, mining difficult resource bodies, finding new resource bodies, reducing energy use and restoring landscapes when mining is finished,” says Harding. The company’s Research and Development is another vital chapter of the program. In addition to innovating new ideas, the R&D team thrives on continuous improvements and finding new ways of making operations more efficient. “We have a centralized team of specialists focused on step change improvements in current technologies and operations, but it is not a solo effort: the Mine of the Future™ program is built on strong R&D partnerships,” says Harding. The biggest advantage to creating the Mine of the Future™ is data. The company’s global operations generate vast amounts of data and
Rio Tinto is working to harness the value of that data to increase productivity and become more efficient across all operations. What’s next? Rio Tinto is currently engaged in its AutoHaul™ program, the world’s first fully-autonomous heavy haul, long distance railway system – a key initiative in the Mine of the Future™ program. According to Harding, AutoHaul™ is a critical enabler of Rio Tinto’s strategy to become the world’s best iron ore producer, allowing the

and high-risk work factors.” Along with increasing productivity and safety, the Mine of the Future™ has the ability to assist the mining economy. “As we invest in innovation in the mining industry, there are substantial flow-on benefits for the broader economy. Innovative suppliers to the mining extractive industries have the opportunity to grow, create new jobs, and build smart exports through collaborative technological innovation,” said Harding. “We remain focused on optimizing productivity through autonomous technology. These technologies are a key part of the Mine of the Future™ program, which is designed to find
new ways to mine and extract minerals more efficiently while reducing environmental impacts and most importantly, further improving safety.” Overall, the program is making breakthroughs in advanced mineral recovery, extracting a higher purity mineral from smaller amounts of ore and reducing waste. State-of-the-art automation is transforming productivity and safety for Rio Tinto, making mining better for the entire industry. “Our Mine of the Future™ program has shown positive outcomes in the Pilbara region and showcases the potential of the technology across other operations and commodities,” says Harding.

AngloGold Ashanti Limited and how the re beyond just the life of its mining operations 17
M ac h i n e r y Mining companies live and die by mine site infrastructure. It’s the backbone to any successful operation and has the ability to either enhance productivity or harm it. It also has the ability to impact surrounding communities. To achieve maximum mining production, companies must effectively design and implement infrastructure that meets the needs for (underground or surface) mines including processing plants, miner facilities, and rail and port structures. One of the best in the business in achieving maximum results is AngloGold Ashanti Limited. The South-African mining company has mastered the art of incorporating its ‘big picture’ into designs, executing them to near perfection and getting the most out of its mines from beginning to end. The basics of mine site infrastructure The success of mining infrastructure is hidden in three facets: planning, designing and execution. Infrastructure needs are classified into two categories: infrastructure required to develop and operate the 18 November 2014
Above ground infrastructure of the G mine and infrastructure needed to evacuate the mineral bearing ore to the processing site or port. Infrastructure required at most mining sites includes: • Bulk materials handling • Fuel facilities • Tunnel engineering • Control Systems – including automation and remote control of mining equipment • Rail and port infrastructure • Water infrastructure planning and resource management

Underground at Great Noligwa camps, utilities • Borefields and dewatering AngloGold implements an array of options when it comes to mine site infrastructure. The company has been known to utilize its own contractors as well as outsource duties to highly recognized and skilled contractors. AngloGold also utilizes sophisticated software to explore, design and develop mine site infrastructure, plants and mills, and mine equipment. 19
M ac h i n e r y The big picture Headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, AngloGold Ashanti has over 20 gold mining operations in 10 countries. The majority of the company’s mining operations consist in developing countries where existing infrastructure is little to none. A lack of access to power, clean water and transport infrastructure is a significant barrier to economic
development for these countries. When engineering operations, AngloGold incorporates the ‘big picture’ for mine site infrastructure. The company not only integrates infrastructure for the mining and processing aspect of operations but also for the mine reclamation. AngloGold works to implement infrastructure that will benefit communities in which it operations Above ground infrastructure of the Geita open pit

long after its mines have closed. For example, AngloGold Ashanti Limited has obtained partnerships with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo to upgrade the 53 miles of road between the district capital, Bunia, and the company’s mine site in Mongbwalu. In the past, the road took three days to travel. Now it only takes three hours, giving the UN and local communities the ability to move freely around the area. Because AngloGold understand mining operations will eventually cease, the company is dedicated to integrating mine site closure in the designing and implementation of its mine site infrastructure. “Through improved integration of closure considerations throughout disciplines and with daily operations, we can strive for effective and efficient closure in accordance with our company values, and deliver on our commitment to stakeholders and communities to establish a sustainable future,” the company’s website states. In addition, social infrastructure plays a significant importance in mine site planning and design. According to AngloGold Ashanti,

there is no gainsaying the importance of social infrastructure. “Irrespective of whether the mines are large or small, equipment in use is high-tech or not, social infrastructure in the mode of housing facilities for the workers, schools in the nearby locality for the children of the workers and other types of social infrastructure which will play a crucial role in meaningfully contributing to the socioeconomic lifestyle of the working section in the mines is very important.” The future According to Accenture research, metals and mining expenditures for capital projects is expected to reach $1.5 trillion from 2011 to 2025. “The potential savings and returns through effective management and delivery of a capital project investment AngloGold Ashanti working together as one community
can be huge,” said Jose J. Suarez, managing director for Accenture’s North American Mining industry group and the research lead. “Keeping on budget and within planned timelines across a portfolio of multiyear projects can save millions for a company – in today’s environment strong project management can be an important competitive advantage.” To maintain its high standardization of mine site infrastructure, AngloGold has implemented various engineering programs and schooling through its operations in Ghana, Guinea, Mali and other countries. Earlier this year, the company held a graduation ceremony for 73 apprentices at its Engineering Training Center at its Obusai Mine. The students were trained in various application such as electrical, mechanical, instrumental, mobile equipment, welding and fabrication. Kwaku Awuku, Senior Manager, Human Resources of the Obuasi Mine said: “Training and development is a priority for AGA to ensure that we have the right people with the right skills and knowledge for the right roles to execute work safely, responsibly and effectively.” 23

How to Invest in Mining Stocks Beginners guide to investing in mining stocks including how to get started, the risks and rewards, and tips for analyzing stocks through market data and metal prices W r i t t e n b y: R o b e r t S p e n c e

Finance The mining industry is chalked full of opportunities. The billion dollar sector, which consists of rising and declining commodity prices in everything from gold and silver to iron ore and potash, is a highly volatile market. Fortunately for those who invest in mining stocks, it creates prosperous buying opportunities for those who understand what volatility offers. We break down the best ways to get started in mining stocks and how beginners can analyze stocks through market data and metal prices to better understand how they can earn a return. How to get started Investing in the mining sector is similar to playing fantasy football. You draft the best players available for their price and you bet every weekend they’re going to do well. During the season it’s up to you whether or not you to drop or trade them. Investing in mining stocks consists of two groups: majors and juniors. Companies like Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton, corporations with decades of history, worldspanning operations and a slow 32 November 2014

Quantify the volume of recoverable assests in any mining operation will provide a reliable forecast for future returns on your investment and steady cash flow, represent majors. Juniors are essentially the exact opposite; little capital and little to none business history. According to Investopedia.com, the first step to investing in mining stocks is valuing your options. “Although majors and juniors are very different, they are united by the one fact that makes all mining stocks unique: their business model
is based on using up all the assets they have in the ground. The catch is that mining companies don’t know exactly how much is in a given deposit until it is all dug up. Therefore, the value of mining stock roughly follows the market value of its reserves, with a premium paid to companies with a long history of successfully bringing those reserves to market. To value a mining stock, investors 33
Finance should consider a company’s reserves. These are typically evaluated through feasibility studies, which verify the worth of a mining deposit. A feasibility study generally takes the estimated size and grade of the deposit and balances it against the costs and difficulties of extracting it all. If the deposit will earn more money on the market than it costs to dig up, then it is feasible. The next question to consider is what kind of person are you? Are you willing to take a risk and throw money
at a chance to make a lot of money or would you prefer a more certain option? These questions will help you answer what types of investments and stocks you should invest in. Risks Like most things in life, investing in mining stocks includes a certain amount of risk. If a mining major has a lot of deposits being staked and mined, the contents of any single deposit aren’t likely to alter the stock value too much. For a junior, however,

How to Invest in Mining Stocks
the company lives or dies on the results of its feasibility studies. If the feasibility is positive, then the value of the company may shoot up. Often times a junior miner won’t mine a feasible deposit to the end, rather selling the deposit to a larger miner and move on to its next big thing. In this sense, junior mining stocks form an exploration pipeline that feeds the major miners in the end. With this being said, the big risks and rewards typically reside at the junior mining level. To keep risks down, it’s best not to be exposed to only one type of asset. Instead of putting all your money in one small company, it is better to be diversified across several different sectors, commodities and companies. Being invested more broadly lessens the risk of losing all your money at any one time. Tips As a beginner investor you should first decide whether you want to invest in junior mining stocks or major mining stocks. Juniors have the potential to offer a lot of appreciation in the right market, which makes them ideal for risky players. If you’re
looking for lower-risk stocks with the potential for dividends and some decent appreciation, then major mining stocks are right for you. Investing in a broad market, especially one that gives some international exposure is a smart move for first time investors. A portfolio consisting of plenty of diversification provides the steadier performance of large companies along with a bit of international companies and small caps. According to Jim Mueller, a selftaught investor and financial writer for Nasdaq, before you start investing it is best to spend some time thinking about what you want to accomplish and how to do that while staying within your risk tolerance levels. “Doing this before committing those first dollars will go a long way toward protecting you from the emotional rollercoaster of investing first one way, then another, never really knowing why you are changing your mind. Careful thought before and during your investing career will do more to help your results than trying to chase the latest hot stock. After all, it’s your money - you should know what you are doing with it and why.” 35

Rachovides is positive that Europe can become a partner of choice within the mining industry. “The important thing through what we do is to point out where mining fits in the value chain and to get away from those old stereotypes,” he said. “We need a balanced, responsible approach to keep the value chains in the EU because it won’t contribute to our renaissance or our future if part of the value chain is being sourced outside when we have the ability to do it here. “We should be doing exploration and mining and processing and supplying to the people that need those raw materials. “That’s what we want to achieve; to set the standard that’s higher than everyone else.” Present virtues Manufacturing in Europe currently accounts for 75 percent of the EU’s exports and many of these manufactured products depend on raw materials. It is figures like these which the Association aims to make clearer to the business world moving forward.

“Europe is surprisingly underexplored and underinvested for exploration, but in terms of technology, we’re very advanced, so we are increasingly developing the ability to mine more complex deposits and have more automated machinery,” Rachovides said. “We ultimately look to a future of stateof-the-art modern mining in Europe.” The Association is therefore striving, through affiliations with organisations and

conferences at high profile events, to start getting that positive industry message across. This can only come with a collaborative and integrated drive among its members too though, and Rachovides is adamant that all are responsible in that push and none are burying their heads in the sand. “Most of our members need and do talk more about our good stewardship and the added value that we bring across the spectrum of our activities,” he added. “A lot of the criticisms are the sins of our past and we need to talk more about the virtues of our present and our future. “Our performance today in Europe speaks for itself. We have excellent health and safety records, very low numbers of fatalities and rank very highly in terms of productivity. We invent a lot of technologies used worldwide because we are constructive, responsible, intelligent people.” Globally competitive Structured through a series of committees, comprising a decision-making steering committee, a think-tank policy committee, and some more specialised sector committees – environment, health and safety, emission training standards, communication, gold mining and magnesia production – Euromines is set up to be the recognised representative for mining in Europe; a voice and point of reference in relation to the European institutions, and a sounding board for members regarding

In such a niche market, building a reputation is paramount, but Compass Minerals UK, formerly known as Salt Union, has certainly been around long enough to boast such acclaim. Director of Compass Minerals UK’s Salt Business, Ian Gordon explained: “We have just recently changed our name from Salt Union Limited to Compass Minerals UK Ltd. Unifying ourselves as one Compass Minerals allows us to build on our long history of which Salt Union has helped build. “We have been owned by Compass Minerals since 2001 and Compass Minerals floated on the New York Stock Exchange in 2003. We are able to leverage the expertise that they have in the US and Canada in areas of salt and agricultural specialty fertiliser products, while carrying on the same good work we’ve always done as Salt Union under various ownerships.” In the UK, the company now consists of the one salt mine in Winsford, Cheshire where it has the capability to mine 1.5 million tonnes a year to a customer base comprising local authorities as well as the highways agency to ensure the safety of UK roads.

Operations in Winsford Mine
Setting up now for long-term sustainability is a hallmark of Compass Minerals’ success in the UK, and the benefits of the continuous miners has not gone unnoticed, with the parent company replicating the investments and operations in Canada to strive for the same results. Dunn continued: “Over a five-year period, Compass Minerals has invested more in the 60

UK than it had done in the previous 15 years. “We’ve put in the new continuous miner and a new hoisting system, we’re installing the new heavy duty drift conveyor that is a mile long and can pull 1,800 tonnes per hour for a mile, and we’ve also invested heavily into crushing and screening. “Compass Minerals is investing heavily into the sustainability of the overall facility here in the UK.” DeepStore Safeguarding the future of the company even further, one of Compass Minerals’ key areas of growth in recent years has been the initiation and development of its vast storage space with its DeepStore business. Established in 1998 at its Winsford site before acquiring two further locations in London in 2007, the concept behind DeepStore is to fill the void left behind after mining has occurred to store archives, documents and possessions 150 metres underground in what has been a highly complex and successful initiative. Gordon explained: “We effectively create rooms in the space left behind when the salt has been taken out of the mine, and we store documents for some very well-known customers.” These customers include financial institutions, police departments, universities and hospitals making the operation not only highly significant but also massive in its stature; the area equivalent to that of 700 football pitches.

C ompa s s M i n e r al s U K Lt d The idea behind DeepStore was to create a storage facility naturally free from the dangers of ultraviolet light, vermin or flooding, and as the mining operation expands, so too will the areas of space left behind to develop the business further. “It’s a very green re-use of mined areas of the mine, so essentially a great way of getting further value out of it,” Dunn said. “We currently have around two million boxes stored underground, with customers such as The National Archives, capitalising on the ideal temperature and humidity, which is an ideal environment for long term archives and especially paper records.” Having been awarded ISO9001 and ISO14001 certifications already as a result of its fourpronged security, technology, quality and sustainability model, Compass Minerals is keen to push forward DeepStore even further in the future as a much more consistent and stable source of value to support its salt operations. It’s either at one extreme or the other which requires a very flexible business model. “We therefore run a steady state model where we produce a fixed amount each month, and let the stocks on the surface float depending on the demand to ensure we can supply our customers.” This strategy is not only dependent on the weather at the end of the yearly cycle, but is also dependent on close collaboration with the company’s key customers and them setting their own demand levels correctly. undin Mining is bolstering its presence across Europe and beyond with a number of promising expansions, along with exploration and mine construction projects which will see the company head towards its 500,000ton production target in the next two to three years. Such ambition is amply demonstrated by the drive to more than double zinc output at Lundin’s Neves-Corvo mine in Portugal, while a $715 million investment into a new nickel-copper mine in Michigan, USA, is now operational. The American acquisition from Rio Tinto extends the company’s reach beyond its European heartland, where mines in Portugal, Sweden and Spain are also performing well and have life ahead of them. Away from wholly-owned operations, Lundin Mining also holds a 24 percent stake in joint ventures with Freeport in a high quality coppercobalt operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and in a cobalt refinery in Finland, granting vertical integration into the world of cobalt mining. While current performance and growth has been steady, CEO Paul Conibear is aware that the business needs to keep exploring for the next high-grade copper discoveries and bring more assets on board. “Our metal production is around 300,000 tons this year and I would like to get us up to 500,000 tons in the next two to three years which means

an additional one or two more mines,” he said. “This will lift Lundin Mining to the sort of scale we want to be at, operating five or six strong mines.” Neves-Corvo Approximately 220 kilometres southeast of Lisbon in the Alentejo district of southern Portugal lies Neves-Corvo, Lundin Mining’s most significant European asset run by its native subsidiary Somincor, and one which could have up to 30 more years of life ahead of it. Already producing 50-60,000 tons of copper and 60-65,000 tons of zinc annually from five separate ore deposits, the company is conducting a feasibility study which could see it more than double zinc output by 2017. “The study is not complete yet but we are optimistic,” Conibear added. “The global resource is more than 100 million tons of better than six percent zinc and only 1.2 million tons a year is being processed.
europe
“There is huge potential if we can get the capital investment right. Worldwide there are very few western companies who have an asset base like this, so it is a unique opportunity for us to look at something which has been underexplored over the past decade.” The study should be completed by the end of Q1 2015, with Lundin keen to get construction underway which would involve deep bottlenecking, improving shaft capacity and doubling the zinc plant above ground. The company is also looking to expand tailings management storage and advanced water treatment facilities. Despite the upcoming focus on boosting zinc production, copper will continue to provide 50 percent or more of revenues from this asset, home to 2,000 of Lundin’s 3,000 global workforce. Into the Americas Lundin Mining’s newest Michigan asset fits perfectly into Conibear’s plan to find new deposits of the highest quality. Having acquired the nickel-copper site from Rio Tinto in July 2013 for $315 million, a further $400 million has brought the project to operational status ahead of schedule with a view to it becoming the company’s eventual biggest earner. Conibear said: “This is an extremely high-grade deposit, and nickel has taken a big step forward recently as a highly valuable commodity so we are hitting the cycle at an ideal time.

“Currently the life is eight years and there is a satellite deposit we are drilling now to see if we can expand the life beyond this. There are not many new mines being built these days so we are very pleased with how this has developed.” The CEO said that Lundin should be able to produce at around $2 per pound of nickel, and with prices currently sitting at roughly $8, the margins are extremely encouraging, especially given annual production is expected to reach respective amounts of 23,000 and 20,000 tons of nickel and copper. The 300 metre long, 85 metre wide and 340 metre deep high grade deposit will also produce some cobalt, platinum, palladium and gold byproducts. Just recently announced is Lundin Mining’s acquisition from Freeport of an 80 percent stake in the renowned Candelaria copper/gold mine in Chile. This $1.8 billion acquisition vaults Lundin up into the top 20 copper producers, more than doubling 2015 copper production. Lundin is pursuing upside opportunities at Candelaria with an aggressive exploration programme to extend the life of the large open pit and three existing underground mines that make up the Candelaria Mine Complex.

2013: “In addition to the provision of traditional community investment programs in the areas of health, education and community infrastructure, the Lundin Foundation provides seed grants, technical assistance and risk capital to highpotential small and medium-sized businesses and social enterprises with a view to generating wealth and employment needed to alleviate poverty on a sustained basis.” Such ongoing work will only continue to strengthen the company’s reputation as a sustainable miner, something which the CEO is determined to preserve and enhance moving forward. Looking forward As well as helping to improve the lives of others, Lundin Mining also invests heavily into developing its own base of employees and prospective workers. This often involves offering work to locally-based people, providing an instant economic boost to the areas operated in. Equally as important as adopting the latest proven mining techniques and training existing workers is nurturing the mining engineers and directors of tomorrow, something which the company’s successful graduate scheme is actively pursuing. “We hire a lot of young people; last summer we had 58 students and when they come on board we cycle them through our mines to gain on the job training,” Conibear said. “It has been

rande Côte Operations has begun production in one of the world’s largest dredging operations as it aims to achieve economic prosperity, not only throughout its 15 year-plus lifecycle of the mine, but also far beyond that to Senegal and the local population. Stretched four kilometres wide and 100 kilometres long, the Grande Côte site has been a long time in the planning under the guidance of owners, TiZir Limited, and the Senegalese Government who owns the remaining 10 percent; both of which have played an integral role in supporting all stages of the operation’s development. The origins of what is now a globally significant mine, goes back to 2006 when

Mineral Deposits Limited gained the tenure, followed quickly by a similar successful tender for a gold project, also in Senegal. While the gold mine took off immediately, Grande Côte was slowly developed in the background in regards to logistical planning, locating resourcing and carrying out feasibility studies; all of which culminated in the key ownership agreement which has funded the project to where it is today. Chief Executive Officer, Simon Finnis explained: “Mineral Deposits Ltd (MDL) signed an agreement with ERAMET, a large industrial company with an ilmenite smelter in Norway, as a joint venture partner. “MDL then merged the Grande Côte project

into this joint venture, forming the company, TiZir Limited which now owns the smelter in Norway and 90 percent of the project here in Senegal. “Now that the construction effort is over we can look towards producing what some people have reported as six percent of the world’s mineral sands products from this Grande Côte mine.” Ramping up production Located 50 kilometres north of Dakar, Grande Côte runs parallel with the ocean for the entire 100 km length of the mining concession, making it a globally significant mineral sands deposit. The mine itself was constructed over a two year period, at a cost of $650 million, finishing
af r i c a
in March 2014 and will mine relatively low grade 1.7 percent heavy mineral sands. Now in the “ramping-up”, commissioning phase of the project, Finnis is eager to start seeing the fruits of the organisation’s labour. “The project itself is fully integrated and starts off with us mining a large sand dune with our dredge.” he said. “We then process that sand through a mineral concentrator - a floating wet concentrator – which separates the sand from the heavy minerals using gravity techniques, creating a heavy mineral concentrate. “This concentrate is pumped to a storage area, and we place the clean sand, using pumps, pipelines and stackers, behind us. “What you end up with is a big pond where we take from the front and put it in the back, so the whole pond continues to move along the mine path following the ore body.” The mining operation will, at full production, mine and process at a staggering production rate of 55 million tonnes per annum. Over a projected lifecycle of at least 15 years, this equates to more than a billion tonnes of resources, with nearly 800 million in reserve. The heavy mineral concentrate is then trucked to the operation’s mineral separation plant where it is put through further stages of processing, all of which culminates in approximate annualised production of 575,000 tonnes of ilmenite (two grades), 80,000t of Zircon (two grades) and smaller amounts of Rutile and Leucoxene.
Grande Côte Operations With construction complete and mining underway, the Grande Côte Mineral Sands Project is one of only a few major new projects globally that is set to take advantage of the supply-constrained mineral sands sector. Grande Côte is located in Senegal, west Africa. Having gained independence in 1960, Senegal enjoys a stable and investor friendly political and social environment. The government of the Republic of Senegal is a valued partner and holds a 10% free carried interest in the project.

In regards to the large amounts of steel, pipework, cables and dredges being purchased, availability simply isn’t there in Senegal, so a lot of the essential components were imported. However, the operation’s dedicated local focus was accounted for in terms of labour via nearby contracting companies.

Earlier this month, the company entered into an agreement with the Government of the Province of San Juan for the implementation of the green metallurgical technologies in Argentina. “Signing the MoU to implement the technology in Argentina is a great sign for the mining industry,” says Lemieux. “If you have the minister of mines

agreeing with the technology then the industry should really open up and listen. It will help force the mining sector to focus on sustainability.” Construction of plants The partnership with Argentina is expected to bring great thing for Dundee. The company has been awarded $5.7 million in grants by the Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada for its demonstration plant at the Thetford Mines in Quebec. “The big thing here is two governments have stepped in and helped us initiative green technologies within the mining industry,” says Lemieux. “That really gives our green technology a stamp of approval.” The facility, which began in 2010 as a pilot plant, is currently being constructed to establish the optimal operating conditions for minerals to be treated. The $25 million demonstration plant, which will operate on a continual basis, will be used for testing materials from potential partners who are considering the application of Dundee Sustainable Technologies. “We’re using the facility to demonstrate new ideas,” says Lemieux. “It will be a place to empower industry partners to test new technologies.” When the plant becomes operational in 2015, the company will take up to 15 tons of gold concentrate per day from the mine operator over a 12-month period and over 300 tons of ore per day.

Imerys Talc is the world’s leading producer of talc. The company operates on five continents (nine deposits) and supplies roughly 15 percent of the global talc demand. As the company continues to grow, its North American division is leading the way. Location, location, location The group is currently enjoying success at its Penhorwood Mine and concentrator along with the Timmins Micronizing Facility in Canada, increasing talc production at record paces. Canada, which is renowned for exceptionally high 128

quality talc, has become a jackpot for company. “The talc in Canada is different than talc found in other regions around the world,” says Jeff Errett, operations manager at Imery’s Canadian division. “Talc from Canada does something radically different then other places. A lot of the deposits around the world are very pure, here in Canada the deposits are less Pure but the concentrator enables the operation to create a unique quality unmatched in the industry. The mineral possesses a unique combination of properties

that improve performance in a wide range of industrial applications including paper, paints, plastics, rubber, ceramics, agriculture, food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. “Our Canadian Operations are consistently producing world -class products,” says Errett. “The talc that comes from Canadian deposits provides a lot of strength characteristics that other talc can’t match.” “We’re pushing the limits now, doing around 350 tons a day of Concentrate while feeding over 1000 tons a day of Ore,” says Errett. Through drilling and proven and probable recordings, the Penhorwood Mine is expected to produce for approximately 50 years.
“Our company is focused on continuous improvements. In everything we do, we’re always looking to improve,” says Errett. “Our employees see the value in it and its lead to some pretty amazing developments” – Jeff Errett, Canadian Operations Manager

Health and safety According to Errett, another major component to Imerys’ success at its Canadian Operations is health and safety. “We have a bunch of safety programs in place not because we have to, but because we believe in them.” The company has leveraged its open line of communication among employees to report accident that normally wouldn’t be reported. “Because most employees don’t like reporting incidents, we have a 130

program in place that promotes it,” says Errett. “Our view is if we can get those incidents in, report them and analyze them, it will better assist us in increasing safety.” He adds, “The employees have really bought into the reporting process and it’s helping us make things safer.” Empowering employees to speak up and provide insight on day-today operations has only made things safer at Imerys Talc.

“Our employees have a contagious attitude towards safety. We’ll have contractors come here and employees will actually talk to them and encourage them to use safety precautions in every aspect of the job,” says Errett. The company recognizes employees are at risk for stresses and strains associated with mining and has implemented a pre-shift stretching program. “We started to get people to stretch before each shift with different employees leading the stretching. I’ve seen it go from something so formal and rigid to now where everyone participates. We care about the health of our employees,” says Errett. Company culture Although success for the Canadian Operations has been largely attributed to its location, the mine, Mill and Micronizing plant is a shining example of how company culture (when implemented effectively) can impact mining operations for the better. “Our company is focused on continuous improvements. In everything we do, we’re always looking to improve,” says Errett. “Our employees see the value in it and its lead to some pretty amazing developments.” The company strives to employ great people, continuously working with recruiters and human resources to integrate a strong staff.

“Our hiring process is great,” says Errett. “We’re very careful who we hire because they have to have the right attitude and passion. One of the reasons are turnover rate is so low is our internal feedback process.” Imerys allows employees to provide feedback on the hiring process as well as day-to-day operations. “It allows us to hear what they think and the problems associated,” says Errett. “It allows us to obtain feedback and get better.” Thanks to the company’s safety record and safety programs, Imerys Talc has become a workplace of choice. “One of the big things we’re known for is our safety record. 10 years without a loss time accident. That’s very attractive for employees,” says Errett. With the right people in place, the company has been able to build a strong and reliable company culture that promotes open communication. “Our teams have to rely on each other and communicate,” says Errett. “Their actions impact everyone else.”

Mega Precious Metals: Creating value through innovation
CEO Glen Kuntz discusses the company unique partnerships and approach to innovation to create value for its Monument Bay Project Written by: Robert Spence

Headquartered in Ontario, Canada, Mega Precious Metals is an exploration company with a pipeline of high quality gold and copper project throughout Canada. The company has a record of delivering rapid resource growth through their focused and low cost approach to exploration and resource development. The company’s flagship Monument Bay Gold Tungsten Project has been a great example of how the company operates. By focusing on environmental and socio-economic programs with local communities, and finding 136

new and innovative ways to do things, the company is moving forward successfully, no matter the circumstances. Monument Bay Project Located northeast of Winnipeg near Manitoba, the Monument Bay Project. The 100 percent-owned property, which was picked up in 2010, consists of high grade gold and tungsten. “We kick-started the project with the help of the University of Manitoba including professors and students,” says Glen Kuntz, CEO of Mega Precious Metals.

“We brought in a bunch of heavy equipment and determined there was large deposit. From there we started processing and found we had a million ounces in reserve. At first, no one knew about tungsten but the combination of gold and tungsten on average has increased the grade equivalent by 30 percent.” Earlier this month, the company announced an updated mineral resource estimate for the project with a significant increase in grade and resources. The increases in grade at surface appear to be amenable to open-pit mining, assuming the viability of the project is established by a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) study. Upcoming PEA analysis will further assess the potential to establish economically viable mineral resources of both gold and tungsten can

It should be ready in the next few years.” Partnerships The success of the Monument Bay Project can be contributed to the company’s ability to build strong partnerships. “We started the project by engaging with Red Sucker First Nation community,” says Kuntz. “Having a partnership with First Nation is a huge component to the success of the project.”
canada
One of the reasons for the project’s success is utilizing local people. “Sixty percent of our workforce is First Nation. Most of our employees are from Manitoba so it’s a local, home-grown team,” says Kuntz. “They want to see this project move and do well. They’re much more willing to work together which helps create a team environment that is united.” He adds, “We hire people that want to work here and be here. It’s their attitude and willingness to work here that makes us successful. Another major advantage for Mega Precious Metals is their relationships with contractors. The company strives to maintain close working relationships with all their contractors, keeping vision and communication transparent. “Partnerships are like a marriage, it takes a lot of work and a lot of communication,” Kuntz explains. “The goal is to find a company that aligns with the same core values of your business.” The company’s willingness to build solid partnerships and relationships has helped Mega
Precious Metals to continue moving forward with the project. Innovation Mega Precious prides itself on creating value through innovation. It’s been instrumental in de-risking projects and lowering costs and the company is continuously looking to find new ways of doing things. Helping Precious Metals continue to move forward is its motivation to prove itself. By having the right people in the right places, the company’s problem-solving ability has been crucial to continuing the project even when many people doubted its talent. “I’m surrounded around smart people,” says Kuntz. “We’ve partnered with the right people and companies that have helped us facilitate the success of this project.” He adds, “A lot of gold mining companies stopped doing work because the gold prices became quite restrictive. We’ve adapted to the market and we’re making it work for us. We have a unique deposit and it gives us a chance to push on even though gold prices are low. is something Mega Precious Metals excels at. The company maintains an optimistic attitude and is continuously looking to find constructive and innovative solutions to problems, no matter the situation. According to Davis, the company is the first in Manitoba to get a permit for fuel bladders. “By utilizing fuel bladders we were able to cut our diesel costs significantly. We also wanted to 140

reduce and improve our greenhouse footprint and because fuel drums are very environmentally unstable, we removed 95 percent of them at our work site.” Kuntz adds, “By doing all this work, it gives us a chance to showcase our creativeness. The various innovations we use have paid for themselves in how we do our business. We’ve dropped our operating costs so it’s paying off big time.”

Along with partnerships and innovation, the success of the company is based on having the right approach. Thanks to the company’s board of directors, Mega Precious Metals has been able to use creative solutions to problems, implementing new and innovative ideas to get the job done. “I’ve got a really creative board around me that helps gives us direction,” says Kuntz. “Our board members are engaged in the project at different times and I’m very humble and blessed that we have a board willing to have faith in us. The mine is linked by a companyowned rail to the Port-Cartier industrial complex. Located roughly 55 kilometers from Mont-Wright is the Fire Lake mine. Because of the high demand for iron ore, the mine has become an additional deposit for the ArcelorMittal to operate at. In 2011, the company undertook one of the largest expansion projects in Quebec. The project, which was completed last year, entailed expanding infrastructure at the Mont-Wright mine to increase production from 16 to 24 million tons of iron ore by end of 2013. “We hit the run rate of 24 million late last year in November and things look good to make 24 million again this year,” says Steve Wood, president of ArcelorMittal Mining

It’s an exciting time in terms of expansion and maximizing benefit of our investment.” Part of the latest expansion involved the commissioning of new spiral lines and a concentrating plant with additional upgrades to the railway and port in Port-Cartier. Wood believes with a few minor improvements ArcelorMittal can reach an even higher production rate. “We can see a day where with a few minor tweaks we can go above name plate capacity,” says Wood. Overall, the expansion project included: • Commission of new spirals line at concentrator • New trucks and maintenance shop operational • Additional rail sidings completed • New concentrator completed

Both our parts and support business will continue to grow”
“The location will be a total rebuild centre for all of our major components for our mining operations in Australia and New Zealand,” said Pichanick. “All of the spare parts and components from the machinery will be sent back to Adelaide for remanufacture and then go back into the distribution outlets around Australia. “As far as the standard equipment is concerned, we also produce giant jaw crushers. These are used after the mining companies complete their blasting. They bring their blast material to giant dumpers, and the dumpers feed directly into our giant crushers. On average, the blast material is approximately 1 - 1.5 metres in size. Our giant crushers process the materials down to approximately eight inches in size,” explains Kalra. The Company also produces the highly impressive CITIC-HIC AJ (Auto Jaw) Range of single toggle jaw crushers. These incorporate the use of a hybrid cylinder (patent pending) toggle system. The new design of toggle system has made the operation and maintenance

of the jaw crusher is simpler and safer than other jaw crushers currently available in the market. The traditional tension rod system has been eliminated and replaced by a hybrid cylinder, the toggle arrangement not only allows for the equipment to be easily adjusted. This design also provides tramp relief for the equipment which adds another level of protection to the machine and minimises potential damage to the crusher when tramp material enters the crushing chamber. An added advantage of this system, the crusher is able to be adjusted while the machine is running reducing which improves the availability and productivity of the crusher. The toggle system has also been designed with maintenance in mind, the toggle system pivots outward to create easy access to the toggle area for maintenance purposes. Once operating, the project will mine about 140 million metric tons each year and the processing plant will handle approximately 80 million tons of material. This material goes through in-pit crushers before being transported to the concentrator. The crushed ore then enters giant grinding mills, the most powerful in the world. There will be six grinding mill lines, each using an autogenous (AG) mill 12.2 m (40 ft) diameter Ă— 11 m (36 ft) long with a 28 MW gearless 260

motor followed by a 7.9 m (26 ft) diameter Ă— 13.6 m (44.6 ft) long ball mill, each with two 7800 kW motors (44 MW in each of six lines) and standing more than 17 meters high. The final product from these large regrind ball mills using small grinding media will be approximately 28 microns. The mills will produce a fine ore stream which enters magnetic separators to become a concentrate. The concentrate will be thickened and
