elcome to the Ordway and the kick-off to 2025 with Minnesota Opera.

At MN Opera, we’re committed to fostering opera’s future. This commitment has made us a leader in the field, with 50 world premieres to date and six more new planned in the coming years through our New The Snowy Day, based on a children’s book that was published nearly 60 years ago, we’re delighted to introduce it to you anew—in this operatic format. This opera premiered at Houston Grand Opera in 2021. Today, we’re thrilled to be able to premiere a newly commissioned orchestration by Joel Thompson that brings not only new richness and complexity to the music, but also demonstrates our commitment to expanding the American operatic canon.

You’ll see the playful pages of Ezra Jack Keats’ illustrations in supersize form, pulling Peter’s snow-covered world off the page and onto the stage. You’ll hear a fresh musical soundscape building upon Keats’ story—a story that centers black joy, family, and friendship. That opera still has more to add to this beloved tale is a testament to the artform and those that make it.

Expanding upon more nascent stories in the American canon, creating new work, and reinvigorating the classics is only possible with the generous support of donors and subscribers like you. Together, we’re ensuring opera continues to inspire and evolve for generations to come. Thank you for being central to that endeavor.

Peter wakes up, full of excitement, to the first snow of winter, as his parents have promised to let him adventure out alone in the snow. His eagerness to bound outside makes dressing and feeding him an almost impossible task for Mama and Daddy, who lovingly bundle him up (complete with a protective layer of Vaseline.) Mama warns him to be careful and watches him nervously as he ventures out into the snow by himself.

Peter “whisper walks” through the snow and wishes that the snow would last forever. Three older boys start a snowball fight Peter tries clumsily to join in the fun, but they tease Peter and his inexperience and leave him behind, dejected. He cheers up when he encounters Amy and they play and sled in the snow. The older boys return and bully both, but one of the boys, Tim, helps Peter and Amy stop the bullying by ignoring them. The three share a beautiful moment until Amy’s and Peter’s fathers call them home. Peter quietly tucks a snowball into his pocket to bring home and keep forever.

At home, Mama helps Peter get ready for bed while Daddy leaves to work his night shift. Right before bed, Peter goes

to get his snowball out of his jacket pocket only to discover that it has melted. He dreams that his new friends and their snowy day all melt as well, until he awakens to another layer of snow and the promise of another day with his friends. Snow and childhood won’t last forever, but Peter, Amy, and Tim will enjoy both for as long as they can together.

At its heart, The Snowy Day celebrates life's simple joys—the crunch of snow beneath our feet, a snowball carefully tucked into a pocket, and the wonder of seeing the world through a child's eyes.

For over 60 years, Ezra Jack Keats' beloved children's book has captivated readers with Peter's journey of discovery on a snowy day. Inspired by the book The Snowy Day, the opera retells this timeless story through composer Joel Thompson's vibrant music and Andrea Davis Pinkney's expressive libretto. This opera not only amplifies Peter’s adventures with depth beyond his first encounter with snow, but also adds a rich inclusion of the Spanish language and Dominican Bachatamusic. This infusion of culture not only celebrates our world’s rich diversity but also offers a cultural bridge that connects audiences across generations and backgrounds.

This one-act opera explores the bonds of family, the strength found in community, and the courage to face life's challenges. Whether it's tender moments with his parents, the highs of friendship, or the struggle to confront bullies, Peter's journey mirrors pieces of our own lives. The closing scene, "New Day Rising," reminds us of the promise of renewal, hope, and new beginnings.

In a time so often filled with distractions, I'm thrilled to make my opera directorial debut with The Snowy Day at Minnesota Opera. This story invites us to slow down, reconnect with the world around us, and rediscover what it feels like to be a child again, open-hearted and full of joy. For those familiar with the book and those experiencing the story here for the first time, I hope that The Snowy Day reminds us that even life's simplest moments can hold extraordinary magic—if we choose to see it.

May Peter's story inspire you to embrace life's fleeting wonders and find beauty in every snowy day.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR + EZRA JACK KEATS FOUNDATION

ABOUT EZRA JACK KEATS

THE EZRA JACK KEATS FOUNDATION

Ezra Jack Keats (1916-1983) was a pioneering children’s author and illustrator, renowned for creating children’s books that featured multicultural children and families—something not prevalent during the 1950s and 60s. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Keats began drawing as a child and, despite financial challenges, pursued his passion through art classes and, later, as an illustrator for magazines. After serving in World War II, Keats began illustrating children’s books, with his first notable work being The Snowy Day (1962). This groundbreaking book introduced the world to Peter, an African American boy, who has an adventure in the snow following its first fall. It is now a beloved classic. Keats unique collage art style, combining colorful paper and paint, became his trademark and won him the prestigious Caldecott Medal in 1963. Keats went on to write and illustrate over 20 children’s books, including Whistle for Willie (1964) and A Letter to Amy (1968), and, in several books, Peter makes a special appearance in the story.

Founded to honor Keats’ legacy, the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation continues his mission to “do good” by fostering children’s love of reading and creative expression. Through programs like the EJK Bookmaking Competition, the Mini-Grant Program, and the EJK Book Award, the foundation supports emerging writers, illustrators, and publicschool arts and literacy initiatives. These efforts, funded in part by Keats’ royalties, aim to inspire young readers and future creators, advancing Keats’ vision of a more inclusive and imaginative future.

Fred Sewell

(May 17, 1932 – October 30, 2024)

The Minnesota Opera board and staff members mourn the passing of our long-time friend, Fred Sewell. An accomplished and passionate musician, Fred was an integral member of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra for over 30 years, serving as our Concertmaster. He led the orchestra rather quietly with his beautiful playing rather than with his words.

Notably, he played in the inaugural performances of Center Opera in 1963, Venus and Adonis and The Masque of Angels. During his tenure as Concertmaster, he enjoyed playing for newly commissioned works.

The photo above was taken on the eve of the world premiere of The Grapes of Wrath, which he and his wife, Gloria, attended on their 50th wedding anniversary. The Sewells were avid attendees and supporters of Minnesota Opera. After retiring as Concertmaster, Fred served for a number of years on the Board of Directors. We will all miss his warmth and smile.
