Dear Friends, I wish to take an opportunity to welcome our students and all of you back on campus. When the on-campus student and staff orientations began in August, we knew that we were ready for an extraordinary year ahead. My colleagues and I were looking forward to seeing students in classes and offices and socializing with faculty and staff around our campus. This fall we offered classes in a variety of delivery methods, including online, hybrid, FlexSync, and in-person. We had been through difficult months last year and were ready for a new beginning when the Fall semester started. Yet, the pandemic is not over, and challenges remain. Some of our international students are unable to join us in the classroom due to travel restrictions, and some local students take classes remotely out of precaution. Several of our long-planned events did not materialize due to COVID-19 danger, and others had reduced capacity. Regardless of the present challenges, we have continued with our goal of delivering effective teaching and advising to the students in the accounting program. As we learn from our peers nationwide, the pandemic is not the only challenge that accounting undergraduate programs have been facing. In recent years, there has been a significant decline in accounting students’ enrollment across the state of Minnesota and the country, reaching as high as 20 percent for some programs. This is due to both shifting demographics but also as a result of changing workplace expectations of the accounting profession. While our undergraduate accounting enrollment numbers have not been affected as badly, we may still experience the aftermath of the combination of these factors in future years. We need to develop an action plan that would allow us to stand out among our peers and would keep attracting student talent from in- and out of state. On the positive side, our Master of Accounting (MAcc) enrollments have been growing. We continue supporting several student organizations on campus, including the Accounting Club, Beta Alpha Psi, and National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). The department would like to thank our regional partners for participating in these organizations’ events and for sponsoring their activities. My colleagues in accounting and business law wish you great holidays and Merry Christmas! Best wishes, Oksana Kim, Ph.D., FCCA Chair, Department of Accounting & Business Law The Allen Lenzmeier Accounting Professor of Leadership & Diversity Leadership Team, Midwest section of the American Accounting Association
MESSAGE FROM FROM THE MACC DIRECTOR AND LENZMEIER PROFESSOR OF EXTERNAL PARTNERSHIPS Dr. Byron Pike Hello Accounting Alumni and Friends of the Program, I have had the pleasure and honor to serve as the Master of Accounting Program (MAcc) Director over the past three years and the Lenzmeier Professor of External Partnerships over the past couple of years. It is so rewarding to positively impact the lives of others, while also serving the firms/companies that recruit our students and the profession. I strongly believe that we have a profound and meaningful impact on our students that will last their lifetimes. The MAcc program has grown dramatically over the past couple years, which is a direct reflection on the quality of the accounting faculty at Minnesota State University, Mankato and the culture and reputation of our program. We also attribute much of our success to being flexible and supportive of our students. We achieve this through continually surveying our students and stakeholders to adapt and change over time. This recipe for success is indisputable. Our MAcc students have a 100 percent placement rate and pass the CPA exam at levels that far exceed that of the national average. I look forward to maintaining this continuous improvement approach and will work to make the MAcc one of the best tracks for accounting students to achieve 150 credit hours. My role as the Lenzmeier Professor of External Partnerships is highly correlated with that of the MAcc Director. Approximately 65 percent of our MAcc students come directly from our undergraduate accounting program. The remainder come from other accounting programs or are working professionals looking to transition into accounting and/or become CPA eligible. Students choose our accounting program because of our quality reputation and strong network of partners that hire our graduates. I enjoy growing/maintaining these relationships to ensure our students continue to have access to high quality internship opportunities and employment upon graduation. We genuinely appreciate all the support from our alumni and backers of our program. Please feel free to reach out to me directly (byron.pike@mnsu.edu) if you are looking for help with recruitment, engagement, or wish to provide scholarships to our students. Go Mavs! Byron J. Pike, Ph.D., CPA Allen Lenzmeier Accounting Professor of External Partnerships Master of Accounting (MAcc) Program Director

Meet the Firms / Student Recruitment
At the beginning of every fall semester, the College of Business hosts its premier accounting and finance career fair for students. Unfortunately, this September, the College of Business took the necessary steps and decided to cancel Meet the Firms in-person events to protect the health and safety of students, faculty members, and visitors. With the help of our Career Development Center, our MAcc graduate assistants have worked to connect our partner firms with our excellent accounting and finance students in virtual, club, classroom, and other environments. We would like to thank all the employers that provided opportunities to our students over the last year: Abdo Baker Tilly BDO BerganKDV Boulay CarlsonSV CBRE Clifton Larson Allen Compeer Financial Copeland Buhl Deloitte Eide Bailly Ernst & Young Federated Insurance Froehling Anderson Grant Thornton
