Chair’s Message Dear CM Friends, I am delighted that you are reading and exploring our annual newsletter. Whether you are a student, alum, or industry professional, I would like to thank you for your time, involvement, support, and enthusiasm. In this newsletter, I have the privilege of writing the Construction Management Department chair note. Therefore, I would like to share with you some of our program facts and achievements that we are proud of. The Construction Management program was ranked as the best value program among 25 programs in the United States for the third year in a row. We are proud to be recognized nationally according the criteria that has been used by bestvalue.com. The leading indicators used in this ranking are; Accreditation, Degree Popularity, Program Enrollment, Graduation Rate, and Price. More information can be found at this link: https://www. bestvalueschools.com/rankings/construction-management/ In the last year, two student teams placed first in the National Roofing Competition and the Pursuit Midwest Regional Competition; additionally, in the Associated Schools of Construction competitions, a student team placed third in the region four competition. This reflects our student’s professional quality and commitment to excellence in this profession. Our primary focus is to build future leaders for our engineering and construction industry. Besides the program achievements in recent years, the program history expands over 45 years and is considered the most considerable program with respect to student enrollment in Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota. These deep roots in construction education brings greater opportunities and commitments. One of these opportunities is to keep providing the best in class learning experiences to our students; for example, we have been providing more field experiences through construction site visits and case studies to be analyzed among student teams. These cases are sometimes discussed in our classes by the different construction management professionals who manage these types of projects. This has impacted our students’ performance and satisfaction. We have been supported by a wide range of our industry experts to visit our classes and share best practices for a successful project. Accordingly, we adopted our first strategic direction for the next five years to expand the project-based learning approach in our curriculum. This approach should help our program to enhance hands-on and project planning and execution experiences. Utilizing some real project documents that our engineering and construction industry firms worked or are working on or even planning to work on has been very useful to enhance our student learning and active class learning; the project-based learning replaces the traditional teaching approaches for a more engaging class environment.

The second strategic direction we adopted is the expansion of utilizing more technology tools in our classes and curriculum that will enhance student creativity and technology utilization skills. Our industry is heading in this direction and we are committed to supporting our companies with technology-savvy graduates. We have been updating our classroom and computer lab’s digital capabilities and are using much-advanced construction software that is used in project planning and execution like Revit, Primavera, Procore, Bluebeam, and Navisworks, etc. We are not only utilizing these types software but also 3D camera technology to capture real construction activities from project sites. The captured photos and videos are incorporated into the project drawings and building information modeling (BIM) files. This enables faculty to visualize these activities to students and can be discussed and analyzed digitally in class to provide visual information which enhances student learning experiences. The third strategic direction we adopted is pursuing the acquisition of a construction management innovation space on our campus or in the Mankato area. This space will be used to provide more hands-on activities to our students, which could include building construction mockups for different building components, testing materials, and experimenting with more advanced technology tools. Our industry has continually been supporting our program to be successful and recognized both nationally and globally. This space would take our program to a whole new level. We look forward to working more with our industry partners to complete this project soon. Enhancing our professional and inclusion practices is our fourth strategic direction. Faculty, staff, and student are committed to increasing the opportunities to improve their professional development, which apply respect, equality, transperancy, and leadership in their day to day activities. Our program works with all stakeholder to enhance our ability to be the program which develops global citizens for our built environment nationally and globally. Additionally, a fifth strategic direction is to maintain our program as the best value program nationally, where we keep our strong connections with the engineering and construction industry, increase our student retention and satisfaction, maintain our quality standards aligned with our accredation requirements, improve our student graduation rate, and enhance our curruculium to be relevant to the market development and growth. Finally, as our faculty team strives hard to provide the best education and learning experiences to our students, I would like to thank them for the great work they have been providing to our program. I also would like to recognize our industry partners, especially our advisory board members, for their continuous support to our mission and goals and their restless effort to improve our program to be the program of choice. Awards and Recognitions CM Student Awarded Women’s Construction Leadership Seminar Scholarship Sydney Alberts was nominated by our CM faculty and selected by Kiewit as a recipient of the Women’s Construction Leadership Seminar scholarship to attend their two-day event in Colorado January 15-16, 2019. This seminar focused on developing the leadership skills of collegiate women. Students selected for this opportunity have “strong leadership potential and a drive for success with a passion for the construction and engineering fields.” Sydney elected to have her internship with Mayo Clinic’s construction division and completed her degree with our program spring 2019. She is currently working as Project Engineer at A&A Electric & Underground Construction in Rocheter, MN.

On the morning of February 12th, six roofing industry experts judged the oral presentations and the Roofing Alliance was proud to announce Minnesota State University, Mankato as the winning school. The team from Colorado State University took 2nd place and the team from the University of Florida took home 3rd place.

Roofing Alliance Construction Management Student Competition By Dr. Brian Wasserman The Roofing Alliance Construction Management Student Competition was in its fifth year. It is a national competition to determine which teams could submit written documents and create an oral presentation to win the bid for a project. This year, the teams were tasked with submitting a qualified bid package for installing a new roof system for the Hilton Franklin Cool Springs Hotel in Franklin, Tennessee, formerly installed by Rackley Roofing Co., Carthage, TN. Universities across the country took up the challenge. Minnesota State Mankato competed for the first time with Chase Olson, Shola George, Hunter Morsching, Hunter Campbell, and Jon Harrington as team members. The team was coached by Dr. Wasserman and mentored by Kevin Palmer from Schwickert’s in Mankato. The judges reviewed the written proposals, submitted December 10, and selected five teams as finalists for the competition. The five finalist teams, including Minnesota State Mankato, were welcomed to the 2019 International Roofing Expo in Nashville to give oral presentations as

Construction Management Team Takes 1st Place at Construct*ium By Mohamed Diab Our student team placed first in the Pursuit Competition held at the Graduate Hotel in Minneapolis on April 23, 2019. Minnesota Construction Association and Construct*ium celebrated the annual Leadership Training Academy Day. Professionals from many architecture, engineering, and construction companies attended their leadership sessions with faculty and students. Student teams from the best 9 construction management schools in the Midwest Region competed in different professional competitions in addition to their bid proposal presentations for an actual project.

SWPPP Certification Class In collaboration with the University of Minnesota’s Erosion and Stormwater Management Certification Program, we hosted the “E1 1001 Construction Installer” certification course for our students on March 22nd. Thank you to Rebecca Forman from the U of M for coming down and teaching this.

On Campus Career Expo The Fall Career Expo put on by our Career Development Center brings students and industry together to create numerous opportunities. The Construction Industry always shows up in full force for this event to network and recruit students for internship and postgraduation employment.

Continuing Education for Industry Professionals CMI Lunch & Learn The Concrete Micro Institute, or CMI, is the collaborative effort of Minnesota’s agencies, industry, research, and academic authorities on concrete. Sessions are offered every quarter and include different technical presentations from the world of concrete. In April, we hosted their “Lunch and Learn” session at the Minnesota State Mankato campus. The topic for this tech talk was entitled, “Opening Strength and Maturity Monitoring.”.

PMP®/CAPM® Certification Exam Prep Course PMI Minnesota Chapter and Minnesota State Mankato hosted the PMP®/CAPM® Certification Exam Prep Course at the Edina campus this past spring. This 8-week course introduces professionals to what they need to know to shorten study time and provides the tools needed to pass the PMP® test. Expert instructors share their perspectives on the Exam Specifications and how to study effectively. This is an annually offered course open to all industry professionals which satisfies 24 education credits.

Pavement Design Workshop This summer in partnership with ARM of Minnesota, we hosted the workshop, “Concrete Pavement Design for Streets, Parking Lots, and Trails”, for industry professionals. The class introduced attendees to design guides for concrete street, parking lot, and trail pavements and covered the newly released Guide for Concrete Trails. This collaboration brought together industry professionals from National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, Concrete Paving Association of Minnesota, Aggregate and Ready Mix Association of Minnesota, Iowa Concrete Paving Association, Cemstone Companies, and our Construction Management Department. The workshop turned out to be a great success and there are plans to continue this collaboration in the future.

Spotlight on Alumni Alumni Give Back CM Alumni Josh Brown (Ryan Companies), Nick Annoni (Target Corporation), and Adam Bauchle (Carciofini Company) participated in a panel discussion facilitated by our Advisory Board President, Jason Gabrick (Ryan Companies). This panel was held for our Construction Management Student Association where they discussed what students need to learn to be prepared for a successful career.

Don Kohlenberger featured on Finance & Commerce Website Construction Management alumni, Don Kohlenberger, was featured on the Finance & Commerce website for his decades of contribution to the construction industry. International Student, Denise Adjidjonu, Achieves Masters Degree By Denise Adjidjonu Throughout my schooling at Minnesota State Mankato, I was an avid member of the Construction Management Students’ Association. I enjoyed the friendly, close-knit environment of fellow students and faculty, and there were lots of opportunities for networking and development. After my graduation from Minnesota State Mankato with my Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, I furthered my education at Clemson University. I worked with drone technology in the analysis of bridges and road surfaces for maintenance by the DOT. It was an enlightening experience, and I learnt a lot. I have currently completed my Master’s in Construction Science and Management, and I hope to further my education and career in this field. To anyone who is within the Construction Management program, I would say that perseverance and hard work are trademarks for success within this fascinating industry. Don’t give up; the sky is your limit!

Faculty Highlights In July of 2018, Dr. Diab was awarded a two-year research contract with Minnesota Department of Transportation for the amount of $88,620 and will be working in collaboration with the Civil Engineering program. This research project will analyse the incentives/ disincentives contracting method for horizontal construction projects. This past summer, Dr. Diab traveled to Dubai, Egypt, and London to present his research findings and meet with professionals in the industry. He is interested in enhancing his global network and learning more out-of-the-box ideas for construction education. Additionally, he has been working to create a study abroad opportunity in Germany with Karlsruhe University. The next group of students will go in May of 2020. In the past academic year, Dr. Diab partnered with Dr. Daniel Sachau, Director of Organizational Effectiveness Research Group at Minnesota State Mankato. Dr. Sachau evaluated our program, and his assessment findings provided new insights and helped us to develop new strategic directions for the next five years. Dr. Diab has also partnered with the Aggregate and Ready Mix Association of Minnesota to create a platform for concrete management learning for professionals in the construction industry.

Dr. Fee resumed teaching within the CM Department after taking a year-long sabbatical during the 2017-2018 academic year. During his sabbatical, he spent much of his time in South Africa re-connecting with and expanding his network. It was a bittersweet opportunity for him to give a final speech during the closing of the Eden Campus in Cape Town, which he helped create over a decade ago. He is looking forward to the new possibilities and collaborations that await him over there. Since Dr. Fee’s return last year, he has been excited and eager to assist the program with moving into a more project-based learning structure. This endeavor is a collaborative effort with all faculty looking at PBL examples, research, and our program’s strategic goals to find the best route to achieving an experience that will most benefit future CM students. Dr. Kim is entering his fifth year here in the CM department. Last year he taught Statics, Construction Safety, Construction Equipment, and Estimating II. He attended the Annual Associated Schools of Construction in Denver, CO. in April to present his research paper, “Key Factors in Construction Engineering and Management Education to Facilitate Student Engagement and Collaborative Learning.” This paper is based on class activities used in his Statics class and shows that the role of the instructor in the class has a significant impact on the student’s learning and class environments. With the help of Dr. Wasserman, Dr. Diab, and Jason Gabrick (CM Industry Advisory Board President), he had the opportunity to work at Ryan Companies during summer 2019 as an estimator in the preconstruction department. He is excited to incorporate his gained experience from the field into the classroom environment to share with our students.

Dr. Roue has been working off-campus to bring the ACE Mentoring Program into Southern MN’s District 77. This program is a community-funded, free, 15 week after school program, providing project based learning for high school students interested in Architecture, Construction, and Engineering. As founder and Board President, she is happy to report that ACE will be entering its second year with the program starting up in January 2020. The non-profit has been awarded a grant from the Mankato Area Foundation along with other donations of time and capital from many local organizations, such as ISG, Orion Development Inc|Niche Artisan Homes, and Knutson Construction. The program owes its success to its donors, professional mentors, and dedicated Board of Directors. Her tireless work with local school aged students increases awareness for the CM profession and our program. On campus, Dr. Roue has been working with students to form a more formal Construction Management Women’s Association, aimed at building relationships and connections between students in the program and the industry for which they are preparing. She has also dedicated a great deal of her time ensuring students within the program have an awareness of and access to the latest technologies and innovations. In addition, she was awarded the Presidential Research Fellowship Award for summer 2019 based off of her proposal entitled, “Enhanced Learning Using Virtual Interactive Maps.” This University-funded research supports the creation of 360 degree virtual interactive maps that will be used in CM classrooms and academic presentations. She spent the summer using this new technology to survey job sites and has begun setting up interactive models for use in our curriculum. Dr. Roue would like to thank all of the industry partners who donated capital and projects. Watch for publications on her interpretative phenomenological analysis of this classroom technology. Dr. Wasserman completed his first year of not being Department Chair after nine years of service and stepped into his new role of CMSA Advisor. He has been enjoying this shift in his role within the Department and looking forward to the new endeavors that are to come with CMSA. In January, he went with the group of students who attended World of Concrete Convention in Las Vegas, NV. He also took on the role of faculty advisor of our student group who competed and took first place at the National Roofing Contractors Association student competition in Nashville, TN. In January 2019, Dr. Wasserman worked with Meyer Contracting out of Maple Grove, MN. to teach Microsoft Office and P6 to a group of Civil Engineers. He had the opportunity to present his paper on housing in South Africa at the 8th International Conference on the Constructed Environment and the Constructed Environment Research Network in Detroit, MI. Dr. Wasserman has also been involved in establishing a growing relationship with our friends at HAN University in the Netherlands. He attended their International Week during summer 2018, which is a student-driven event. His favorite part was visiting the Sea Wall in Rotterdam.

Activities in CMSA by Andres Garcia

One of the main goals of the Construction Management Student Association is to connect students to their peers and interact with industry professionals. In the Fall Semester of 2018, we were able to set up bowling every other week for the students along with team building activities at the Mankato Escape Room. Although weather was not on our side this year, we are still planning a paintballing event, a camping trip and kayaking adventure for the fall semester of 2019. The Golf Event and Sporting Clays Event have always been a big hit within the program for students to engage with professionals in the construction industry. CMSA continues to offer volunteer work by cleaning up our adopted highway off Highway 83 in south Pemberton twice a year. This past year of activities included building a parade float in conjunction with the Veteran Affairs Department on Campus. Along with that, we also had participated in building the pallet bonfire for Student Events team to help kick off homecoming week. Special thank you to all of those involved with the volunteer work! Overall, it was another successful year and we look forward to what is to come!

World of Concrete

In January, CMSA sent 15 students to Las Vegas, Nevada to attend the World of Concrete Convention. The “World of Concrete“ is the industry’s only annual international event dedicated to the commercial concrete and masonry construction industries showcasing leading industry suppliers featuring innovative products, construction machinery, construction equipment, safety training courses, new technologies and unlimited networking opportunities.” Students had a jam-packed 4-day trip full of educational sessions, exhibits, live events, as well as a tour of the Hoover Dam.

2018 Golf Classic By Peter Clark

The Construction Management Student Association’s annual Golf Classic held September 14th was once again an absolute success. The event consisted of industry professionals paired with CM students as they navigated the challenging North Links Golf Course of Mankato. Twenty-eight industry sponsors drove the course in overwhelming support of our students, program, and university. The event proved to be a fantastic networking and professional growth opportunity to all in attendance, regardless of the inevitable hooked tee shots and water hazards that frustrated many golfers.

The Construction Management Student Association’s Annual Clay Shoot was held on April 26th and like years past, was a smash hit. The event consists of CM Students being paired with a team from an industry sponsor in which they each shot a round of 100 clays over 12 different sporting clay stations at the Caribou Gun Club in Le Sueur. We had 23 teams of industry sponsors at this event which lead to amazing networking opportunities along with a day filled with fun and excitement! ASC Competition By Dylan Keck

Construction Management students formed two teams for the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) competition. The two teams were Civil Construction and Commercial Construction. Each team had to prepare a proposal prior to the competition. The proposal consisted of the student’s construction company, previous projects, and much more. The competition consisted of two days. The first day at 6 am the students acquired their project and worked in the hotel room until midnight when the project bid was due. The following day the students had to present their bid to a panel of judges. At the award ceremony the Civil team took 4th place and the Commercial team took 3rd place.

National Association of Home Builders Competition

By Benjamin Yost Six of our students were sent to compete in the NAHB Competition that was being held in Las Vegas during the IBS Show. They were asked with estimating, scheduling, designing and marketing a 150-acre section of land in Coweta, Oklahoma. Their main goal was to present it to a panel of judges acting as the company’s executive board. While our team started late on the project, I am still proud of what we were able to accomplish. Since the program has not competed in a residential competition for a few years there was very little that we knew and took a leap of faith in competing. Our end result still got us placed and the judges were impressed with what we designed and presented. There is no doubt that every member of the team learned something new and they will use that later on in their career. Now that we know what is expected of us we can only improve on our last attempt. We plan to continue to send students to the NAHB competition funded by the Construction Management Student Association. NAHB Team: Mark Dryer, Anastasia Bloomhall, Dylan Keck, Andres Garcia, Cody Bleese, and Ben Yost.
