Through centuries of existence on this area the Herzegovinian people persistently resisted the harshness of nature and history, defending their family, home and kinsfolk and they persevered.

a ljubitelje kulturnog nasljeđa i upoznavanja lokalnih obič aja, postoje još uvijek nedovoljno otkrivena mjesta.

or cultural heritage lovers and those who like to get familiar with local customs, there are still places that are not discovered enough. One of them is the Luš tica Peninsula. In addition to valuable natural attractions, Luš tica inherits centuries - old tradition of rural life on the Mediterranean. Although inhabited before the arrival of the Illyrians, it was irstly mentioned in the C 13th, and the origin of the name represents an etymological mystery.

One of the older agricultural activities on Luš tica was viticulture and the irst vineyards were planted by the Romans. Vineyards occupied large areas and gave high - quality yields. This is illustrated by a legend saying that there used to be so much wine that due to the lack of enough jugs and containers for the new harvest, they had to spill the old wine. Olives were cultivated even in the Greek and Roman times and olive growing is thought to be the oldest profession of people from Luš tica. Olive growing was appreciated due to the manifold use of the fruit and especially the use of oil as a spice and liquid for light in “lukjerne”, old household lamps. About how important olives were on Luš tica, speaks the fact that they were the only ones in the Boka Bay that had religious ceremonies in honour of olives that were organised in olive groves. The most present olive tree is the oil - rich ž utica species, whose colour of oil is golden - yellow.
pirati. Zbog harmonič nog suž ivota i velikog broja sakralnih objekata na malom prostoru, Luš tica se naziva i mala Sveta gora. Vož njom duž panoramske rute „More i visine“ stići ćete do tematske staze „Od soli do srednjovjekovnog grada“ koja otkriva kako je nastao i razvijao se jedan od najmlađih gradova na Jadranu – Herceg Novi.
Since the time of the Illyrian tribes, the residents of Luš tica were skilled sailors and pirates. The irst written record about them is linked to the year of 1443, and it was related to leasing of a sailing ship for commercial purposes. From the period of Venetian rule of Luš tica and the greatest prosperity of the Boka navy, most families had famous patrons – owners and captains, while almost every household had a sailor. The culture of life is an exceptional value of this region and this was mostly inluenced by in luences from developed regions. Twenty churches were built on Luš tica in the past, irst predominantly Catholic, now Orthodox. Due to harmonious coexistence and a large number of religious buildings in a small place, Luš tica is also known as small Mount Athos. Driving along the panoramic route “Sea and Heights”, you will reach the thematic trail “From salt to a medieval town” which reveals how one of the youngest towns on the Adriatic – Herceg Novi was founded and how it developed.

rivers, along caravan routes, by demolished churches, on prehistoric tumuli or by fortresses. Steć ci are historically valuable for documenting the development of a geographic area and historical period. The inscriptions represent valuable sources for studying the medieval language and letter, historical igures and events. The speci icity of this type of gravestone is that it erases class differences and joins two concepts of medieval culture, high (court or church) and traditional culture. They present a part of the intangible cultural heritage. Carved decorations and inscriptions, derived in relief are a result of folk knowledge, skill, beliefs and skills of the community which were transmitted through generations often by anonymous folk builders. Steć ci also represent works of art, in luenced by Western Europe and Byzantine art, which was passed to karavanske puteve, poruš ene crkve, na praistorijskim tumulima ili uz gradine. Steć ci su istorijski vrijedni radi dokumentovanja razvoja jednog geografskog prostora i istorijskog perioda. aravan represents a group of passengers, who, due to greater security and mutual protection, are traveling together. Formed for trade of goods or pilgrimages to holy places, caravans used a network of already established caravan routes – main and secondary, summer and winter routes. There were places along the routes where people could stop to take a break or sleep over. Since ancient times, caravans were common in Central Asia and North Africa. This kind of transport of goods remained until the second half of the C 19th when railway was introduced.

However, there are examples, such as North Africa, where caravans are formed even today. Nomadic herders by the name of Vlasi dealt with transport organisation in the Balkans and the main means of transport were mountain horses. Every caravan had its leader who was engaged in organising transport of goods and was responsible for the goods. He also commanded a larger number of people who took care of the caravan and shared the pro it. The transportation price depended on the quantity of goods, distance and weather conditions and the largest recorded caravan counted 600 horses. Raw materials and semi – inished products, leather, wax, honey and precious metals were transported to the coastal area, while salt, cloth, craft products and luxury goods were traded in the opposite direction.
