Right at Home: Faux furs add panache to fall's home decor (AP) — Faux fur. For decades, the term conjured up images of obvious artificiality. Its fakeness often became a style feature — "fun fur" had colors and patterns so exaggerated there was never any doubt that the fur came from a factory, not a forest. And while the look may have been sometimes passable as real, the "hand," or feel, gave the game away. Like early versions of the shag rug, faux fur felt rough and plastic-y. Today's versions are remarkably realistic. Often, the acrylic pile that makes up much of faux fur is augmented with natural fibers like wool, silk and cotton rayon, with various silicones and resins used to improve the luster. Manufacturers are working with other techniques, like mixing shrinkable and non-shrinkable fibers, as well as fine and coarse fibers, to even more closely resemble complex furs like beaver, mink and river otter. WHICHCRAFT: Testing image transfer techniques CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Consider me your new craft-test dummy. Do-it-yourselfers don't have to look far to find tutorials for almost any crafting technique imaginable. But the online options can be overwhelming, and there often aren't reviews by others who've tried to replicate the projects. I'll be bridging that gap here, pulling together a few different methods to produce the same result, testing them and sharing the findings. First up: transferring images to wood. Gifts featuring family photos are always a hit, and can be given a bit of an artsy boost by transferring pictures to wooden coasters, ornaments or boxes. Here are three techniques I tried with both black-and-white and color images, rated from 1 to 10 by cost, ease of execution and overall results (with 10 as the least expensive, easiest and best results.) 1. INK JET-FREEZER PAPER METHOD This method is similar to many others that essentially involve using an ink-jet printer to print an image on some kind of slick surface (freezer paper, parchment paper, transparency film) and then rub-

bing it onto the wood surface. I followed directions found on instructables.com (http://bit.ly/1QvzEkp ), taping a piece of freezer paper to a regular sheet of paper and feeding it through my printer. I then flipped the printed image over onto the

Keeping the image still to avoid smearing the ink was tricky, and the results were disappointingly grainy and faint, with much of the detail lost. That said, it might produce an interesting rubber-stamp-like effect with less-detailed images. COST: 9 EASE: 5 RESULTS: 2 2. LASER PRINT-GEL MEDIUM METHOD This technique, featured on the Photojojo! blog (http://content.photojojo.com/diy/ diy-photo), requires either photocopied images or images printed on a laser printer. The image is then coated with a layer of matte gel medium ‚ used by artists to change the consistency and transparency of paint ‚ flipped over onto the wooden surface and allowed to dry. Later, the paper is moistened with a wet rag and rubbed away to reveal the transferred image. While time consuming, this technique produced fairly impressive results. There were a few spots, however, where the image did not transfer completely or was accidentally rubbed off, so this may be best for applications where you're going for a more rustic look. COST: 6 EASE: 7 RESULTS: 7 1. TEMPORARY TATTOO TECHNIQUE My hands-down favorite transfer method was also the easiest, though it also was the most expensive. The instructions (http://bit.ly/1HIswtF ) call for using a Silhouette digital cutting machine to cut the images, but that is not necessary. Basically, the image is printed onto special temporary tattoo paper, cut out and then glued to the wooden surface. The paper backing is then moistened and peeled away, leaving behind a thin film with the image. While the Silhouette brand tattoo paper includes adhesive sheets, I found it much easier to spray the printed image with adhesive and avoid the trouble of smoothing a sticky sheet of adhesive onto the image. The results were crisp and clear, though the tattoo paper is pricey ‚ about $7.50 for two sheets at craft stores. COST: 3 EASE: 8 RESULTS: 9

Ask a Designer: tips on making a room feel bigger (AP) — As the weather gets colder and we come indoors, it's easy to wish your indoor space had some of the open, airy feeling of the outdoors. It is possible to make a room feel larger than it really is: Choosing the right colors and finishes and arranging furniture properly can create the illusion of space. Here, three experts on designing small living spaces share their strategies for making rooms feel larger and more open, without the expense of construction or major redecorating.
REFLECTIONS That classic advice is really true: Strategically placed mirrors will make a room feel larger. "They let your eye travel beyond the room," explains Maxwell Ryan, founder of ApartmentTherapy.com. In small dining rooms, Ryan suggests, place a large, horizontal mirror along one wall, so that while entertaining, you'll see the reflection of guests at your table and flickering candles. But mirrors aren't the only reflective option: New York-based designer Young Huh uses reflective, glossy paint finishes on ceilings to make her clients' rooms feel taller and more open.

Ryan says this works with art as well: Consider adding a large painting or other big piece of art. Long, dramatic curtains can trick your eye in the same way. "Hanging curtain rods all the way at the ceiling, using large art and big mirrors and vertical stripes with paint are great ways to make your eye go up visually," says Kyle Schuneman, co-author of "The First Apartment Book: Cool Design for Small Spaces" (Potter). This has the effect of "lifting the ceiling and making it feel more spacious than it actually is."
LOCATION, LOCATION "Decluttering and cleaning up is always essential," Ryan says, but you don't have to pare down your furniture. Instead, try rearranging it to let energy flow more easily. "A room has good energy and good flow if you can vacuum it without moving any furniture, including the corners," Ryan says. "If you can't get behind stuff, that's a sign that the space is gonna feel a little crowded." Experiment with small changes in furni-

"It's like that fashion tip ... wearing the same color all over" makes you look taller.
