THE MAGIC CITY!
Minot was founded in 1886. The community became known as the “Magic City” because, as the railroad was making its way through town, winter hit. The townspeople said the town went up so fast it was practically up overnight….like magic! That same feeling has been happening the past few years as an energy boom hit the area. The growth that occurred during the first five years of the decade took the 2010 U.S. Census population figures at 41,000 into more like 50,000 at present time. The community has met the need with new housing and infrastructure, including a new airport. North Dakota is number two in the nation in oil production, but Agriculture is still the state’s number one industry. The Minot Area Chamber of Commerce, with our 730 members, welcome you! The Chamber is made up of small business, corporations, service groups and nonprofit organizations. We are happy you have chosen Minot for your destination. Enjoy the great places to shop, eat and enjoy the great outdoors. We are very proud of the Roosevelt Park Zoo which now has red pandas, giraffes and a new aviary. Shopping and restaurants have something for everyone whether you are in downtown Minot, at the malls or anywhere else. The Scandinavian Heritage Park, Taube Museum of Art, Dakota Territory Air Museum and Northwest Art Center are just a few of the places you’ll want to stop and check out while you are here. We hope you will also head outdoors and go golfing at any one of our many courses in our area. There’s even one for kids, the Jack Hoeven Wee Links Golf Course. If you are in town for one of our many major events, like the ND State Fair, Norsk Høstfest or the Downtown Wine Walk, be sure to check out the aforementioned shopping, museums and restaurants as well. We’re glad you’ve chosen Minot and hope you will enjoy your time here!

ABOUT MINOT
Minot, the start of
‘THE MAGIC CITY’
Minot, located in the valley of the Souris River, is named for Henry Davis Minot, a close associate of James J. Hill, the “Empire Builder,” who was at the helm of the Great Northern Railway. Initially, the city began as a tent town when the Great Northern was pushing west in the 1880s. When construction on the railroad halted to build a bridge across a coulee west of Minot (Gassman Coulee Trestle), a large tent town immediately sprang up which was generally assumed to be the start of permanent settlement. When the selected townsite of Minot became known, the tent town was replaced almost overnight and the new city grew so rapidly it was called “The Magic City.” Minot’s post office was established Feb. 12, 1887. Minot’s current location was selcted in Nov. 1886, and was incorporated as a city in 1887. Today, Minot is a trade center for an area including Canada and Montana as well as northwest and north central North Dakota. The city lies within the eastern boundaries of the oil-rich Williston Basin. The city has a population of 49,450, according to the last population estimate in 2015.

NORSK HØSTFEST CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY
A focal point of the Scandinavian Heritage Park is a full-size replica of the Gol Stave Church in Norway.
Norsk Høstfest will mark its 40th anniversary this year with special events, souvenirs and the unveiling of a giant kransekake. A kransekake is a Danish and Norwegian confection, an impressive Scandinavian cake for special occasions. Limited edition souvenirs include a collector’s edition of Høstfest-Opology, a 40th anniversary cookbook and mugs. Founded in 1978, the festival has grown from a single arena in the All Seasons Arena on the North Dakota State Fairgrounds to encompass the entire State Fair Center and outlying buildings. Scheduled to appear at this year’s event, which runs from Sept. 27-30, are Gary Allan, Josh Turner, the Oak Ridge Boys, Celtic Thunder, Amy Grant, Jeff Dunham, Joe Diffie, John Michael Montgomery, Doobie Brothers and Little River Band. Høstfest also features a variety of free stage entertainment. New from Norway are Alexander Rybak, The European Highwaymen and Ingvar Olsen. Also making his first
appearance at Høstfest is country music legend Dale Watson. Returning by popular demand are Bjoro Haaland, Ricky Nelson Remembered, Williams & Ree and Mollie B. While entertainment is a big draw, there is plenty more to see and do. Guests can learn new culinary techniques at the Nordic Kitchen, shop for one-of-a-kind gifts among hundreds of vendors, indulge in Scandinavian cuisine, meet Viking re-enactors or enroll in Hostfest University classes to learn an artisan craft from an expert instructor. Another area of interest is the Author’s Corner, where guests can meet and hear some of their favorite authors, such as Lauraine Snelling. Minot has more than 30 hotels to choose from, or camping is available on the grounds from Sept. 21 through Oct. 1. Guests arriving early can partake in numerous activities from Lefse Masters Preliminary competitions at Marketplace Foods to the RV PreParty dinner and dance. Tickets can be purchased at the event or in advance online at hostfest.com, by call-
ing (701) 852-2368 or in person at 1020 S. Broadway. Park offers a Scandinavian get-away The Scandinavian Heritage Park in midtown Minot is a magical place where visitors can sense the atmosphere of Scandinavia. From a grass-roofed Stabbur to a 30-foot tall Swedish Dala horse, park attractions make for an inviting stroll and offer insight into the history and cultures of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. A focal point of the park is a full-size replica of the Gol Stave Church, which was moved from Gol, Hallingdal, in Norway to the Folk Museum in Bygdoy Park in Oslo, Norway, about 100 years ago. The church stands on a 60-foot by 45-foot base, rising as a 60-foot-high memorial to the pioneer immigrants who uprooted themselves from Scandinavia to make new homes in North America. A bronze statue stands in honor of Casper Oimoen, a long-time Minot resident and widely-acclaimed ski-jumper. He was a

member of the 1932 U.S. Olympic Ski Team and captained the team for the 1936 Winter Olympics. He was the featured jumper at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair tournament. A statue also exists for Sondre Norheim, the father of modern skiing and acrobatic master of the slopes. The legendary Norwegian skier played a crucial role during the late 19th century when skiing changed from utility into enjoyment and sports. The bronze statue of Icelandic explorer, Leif Erickson, honors “Leif the Lucky,” the first man of European stock to step ashore in America in about the year 1000. According to Saga tradition, his father, Erik the Red, was Norwegian. Leif was born in Eiriksstadir, Icleand, lived and farmed at Brattahlid, Greenland, and served one winter under the Norwegian king in Trondheim. The Hans Christian Andersen sculpture honors a Danish writer most famous for his fairy tales, although he also wrote novels, poems, plays and travel articles. Other park attractions include the large Dala horse. These brightly colored horses have been carved in various sizes by Swedish craftsmen and take their name from the

province of Dalarna, where the carvings have been a popular form of domestic art since the 1840s. The park’s stabbur is a replica of a storehouse from a farm near Telemark, Norway. It was constructed in Norway, then disassembled and restored in Minot. In the typical stabbur, trunks with clothing and valuables were stored on the upper floor. Food and commodities were stored on the ground floor. Stilts raised the floor level and the wooden steps did not come into contact with building to reduce the possibility of rodent infestation, and meat/cheese was
hung from the ceiling. According to the Norwegian folklore, a Christmas gnome lives in every stabbur and brings gifts for well-behaved children. But if the gnomes are not welllooked after, they can play tricks on people. Some people put out a bowl of rice porridge sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon to keep their barn gnome happy. The park’s Sigdal House is a 230year-old house from the Vatnas area of Sigdal, Norway. It was purchased and restored for display in the park. Even the old moss used to seal in between the logs was preserved, along with the rocks that formed the fire-
place. The decorations on the doors inside the house were painted about 1800 by the famous painter from Sigdal, Guldbrand Larsen Foss, and were restored by artist Hans Wold before coming to America. A Danish windmill, built in 1928, has been a favorite spot for visitors and photographers. It originally was used to supply water and grind wheat on a North Dakota farm. A Finnish sauna is reminiscent of saunas in Finland, with their wooden benches and a stove of hot, glowing stones. In addition, the park features a waterfall, a pavillion and Nordic picnic shelter, a plaza with granite tiles forming a map of the Scandinavian countries and a flag display of the countries. Connected to the park is the Edward T. and Leona B. Larson Visitors Center. This uniquely-styled building houses the Visit Minot tourism center and the offices of the local Sons of Norway, the Scandinavian Heritage Association and Norsk Hostfest Association. The Scandinavian Heritage Association hosts its annual Midsummer Night celebration in the park. This year’s event is June 22 at 5 p.m.

ROOSEVELT PARK ZOO
Whether it s the playful river otters and red pandas, the stately African lion, the regal bald eagle or the swimming penguins, there’s many animals and birds for visitors to see at Minot’s Roosevelt Park Zoo. Pathways wind through the zoo area with the Souris River also winding its way through the area. Dating back to the early 1900s, Minot’s zoo is the oldest public zoo in North Dakota. Despite going through two major floods in the past 48 years – the flood of 1969 and the flood of 2011 – the zoo has bounced back each time into a fully viable facility for visitors with a wide variety of zoo inhabitants plus providing special programs for the zoo experience. Minot’s history of having a zoo dates back to April 9, 1914, when the Ward County Independent newspaper in Minot reported “Minot is to have a zoo. This will delight the youngsters and some of the older boys and girls as well.” The park board at the time decided to buy two buffalo in South Dakota, some coyotes, foxes, bears and raccoons. Plans were to also install a cage of monkeys during the summer. Park board members said the parks already had squirrels. The first animals for the zoo arrived in February 1915, at Riverside Park. The park’s name was later changed to Roosevelt Park when a large equestrian statue of Rough Rider Theodore Roosevelt was dedicated in the park on Sept. 11, 1924. A 1927 Minot Parks souvenir book said the zoo had several families of monkeys, buffalo, elk, deer, African lions, mountain lions, kangaroos, bobcats, raccoons, lynx, coati, badgers, foxes, guinea pigs, 21 kinds of wild ducks, eagles, silver black foxes, flying squirrels, swans, alligator, pheasants, talking parrots, cockatoos and others. The first exotic animals, a pair of Nubian lions purchased for $250, arrived between 1924 and 1930. Darius T. Ritchey, who was parks superintendent from 1945-1971, is often credited for being largely responsible for developing a zoo in Minot. The house for felines was built in the early 1970s and financed with the help of the Greater

Minot Zoological Society, a nonprofit organization created in 1970 to promote the zoo, the City of Minot and many donations. GMZS is a nonprofit organization founded in 1970 to promote the zoo. The organization’s now is known as the Zoo Crew. A children’s zoo was opened a number of years ago within the main zoo. Reached by a walk-bridge, this area covers about a half-acre area and resembles a farmyard with a barn. The zoo has survived near closure during the Depression and in later years when its operating money was low. It has gone through major flooding of the Souris River, most recently in 2011, when animals and birds had to be evacuated, some going to other zoos during that time. The flood of 1969 caused every bird and animal to be moved from the zoo which led to the redesign of the zoo grounds. The foot bridge, a feline house, and a new bear den were constructed, according to zoo information. Throughout the following years to the present, additions of new animals, new exhibits and the participation in the Species Survival Program have greatly enhanced the zoo. Zoo births attract many visitors. A Grant zebra foal born at the zoo in August 1984 was the first zebra ever born in a North Dakota zoo. Photos of the foal and its mother were printed in newspapers across the country. A baby kangaroo born at the zoo in 1956 also was believed to be the first kangaroo ever born in North Dakota. The birth of tiger cubs in the 1960s parented by the zoo’s first pair of tigers initiated the zoo’s first involvement in a tiger breeding program. There’s been some “celebrities” at the zoo over the years. Tigers purchased for the zoo performed in the Clyde Beatty, Shrine and Gil Gray circuses. The Minot Daily News reported a lion purchased for the zoo in the 1960s was the second cat in the world that could walk a tightrope. A cougar born at the zoo in 1981 was the star performer of Bob Steele Animal Productions in Florida in promotional advertising for Lincoln-Mercury dealers. The Minot Daily News also reported the cat, named Beaux, was trained to ride a motorcycle and sit at a bar and drink from a glass. Beaux appeared on the TV show, “That’s Incredible,” in November 1983. Two mascots of the former 5th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Minot Air Force Base lived at the zoo for a number of years. “Liberty” and “Eagle,” a brother-sister pair, were donated to the zoo when the squadron deactivated in 1983. At the air base, the cats were always known as “the mascots” or “the lynx mascots” but actually they were bobcats (Lynx rufus) and not lynx. Col. Jack Broughton, who was a 5th FIS commander, was responsible for getting the live mascots for the squadron in 1963. Both cats are no longer living. Throughout the following years to the present, additions of new animals, new exhibits and the participation in the Species Survival Program have greatly enhanced the zoo. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. This past November, the Minot Rotary club held a rededication to thank community partners for the refurbishment of Soo Line steam locomotive No. 735 at its site at the zoo. The locomotive was dedicated 60 years earlier on Nov. 5, 1956. This past winter the zoo was open on certain days unless weather did not permit it. The winter opening offered visitors a different type of zoo experience to summer. Becky Dewitz, zoo director, said some animals, like the wolves are much more active when its colder. Increasing visitors’ experience is a major effort planned for the 2017 zoo season. Dewitz said there will be a wide variety of aspects. “We’re going to try to do more demonstrations about the animal training program and hands-on interactions with some of our animal ambassadors with our animal outreach program,” she said.

WARD COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S PIONEER VILLAGE
Visitors to the Ward County Historical Society’s Pioneer Village Museum are in for a treat this summer. “We’re upgrading our military exhibit this year,” said Sue Bergan, site director. Jan Veikley, events director, said the most recent addition to the museum is a Civil War Union uniform, made to look exactly the way that those worn by Union soldiers would have looked. Also on display are helmets, caps and uniforms and old photographs from other conflicts including World War I, World War II, the
Korean and Vietnam conflicts. The Daughters of the American Revolution also has an exhibit on display at Harmon House. The museum opened for the summer on May 16. Summer hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment on Sundays. Visitors will be able to see the 12 historic buildings at the site, which include pioneer houses, a train depot, a Lutheran church and one room schoolhouse, among others. Veikley said other events are planned for June, but have not yet been finalized.
During the State Fair in July, the museum will be open for extended hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., every day. On Aug. 5, the Minot Classic Car Club will hold its annual car show. People will be able to see a variety of classic cars on display. The museum is also available for private events, such as weddings, picnics, or anniversaries. More information can be found on the organization’s website at www.wchsnd.org or its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/WardCountyHistoricalSociety

WARD COUNTY FAIR 1ST FAIR IN MINOT
Ninety-five years ago, the Ward County Fair was the first fair held in Minot in 1922. The Minot Daily News reported the story of that first fair in a July 2012 story: The Ward County Fair was not held in July as the State Fair now has the tradition of being held. That earlier fair was held from Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1922, to Friday, Sept. 15, 1922. The first fair exhibited northwestern North Dakota’s best in agriculture, livestock, machinery and other products, much like what is still the backbone of today’s fair. Prior to the fair’s opening, new buildings were completed at the Ward County Fair grounds east of Minot. A half mile race track also was built. “With a budget of $2,500 for races available, some good events are expected and purses are expected to attract outside horsemen and motorists of no mean caliber,” The Minot Daily News reported about a month prior to the Ward County Fair’s opening. “When the streets are refined a plat of blocks and lots available to concessionaires and machinery exhibitors will be drawn up,” the newspaper reported. A two-day fair booster tour with officers of the Minot Association of Commerce was made in early September 1922, to several northwestern North Dakota towns, including a night at Harvey. On Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1922, the gates of the fair opened to the public, with Gov. R.A. Nestos delivering a dedication speech in front of the large new amphitheater. There he spoke about diversified farming and lending encouragement to Ward County’s new venture – its fair. “Entries were still arriving this forenoon in all branches of exhibits. From all parts of the northwest, even from Canada and as far east as Cooperstown, exhibitors have brought their products to display to the thousands” who will patronize the Ward County event during its four days of sessions, the Minot Daily News reported.
“The agricultural exhibits are attracting perhaps the major attention. Northwestern North Dakota’s fertile soil has produced a crop unequaled for years, and exhibits which are worthy of commendation are being received from every vicinity. Pumpkins, potatoes, corn, oats, wheat and many other crops, the exhibits of which cannot be duplicated, all serve to create comment and expressions of surprise at the products of the rich northwest,” the newspaper also said. The spur track of the Great Northern Railway was completed and being used to unload entries shipped by freight from outside points. The four days of the fair had plenty of entertainment and concessions, including the Siebrand Shows “with several riding devices and novelties,” the newspaper said. There were trained dogs, slack wire artists, the Mariott Troupe in the Human Monoplane, motorcycle and horse races, automobile races with the Duesenberg, Overland and other vehicles, and band concerts. Chet Jacobson, Minot expert aviator, flew an airplane for daring airplane stunts and a race between the plane and an automobile. On the third day of the fair the livestock, much of it blue-ribbon winners, paraded in front of the grandstand before several thousand people to show the progress being made in the purebred and grade livestock industry in the northwest. Some of the best herds in the state, both of cattle and horses, were entered in the event. Judges declared the fair’s home economics display of fancy work, canned goods and flowers to be of a superior quality, and the entries unusually large. There were beautiful specimens of crocheted work and embroidery, such as eyelets, Roman cut work, novelty embroideries, rugs, hand-woven articles, crocheted bedspreads, appliqued spreads, lampshades and made-over garments. Entries came from adults as well as a large display of items in the junior department.
Numerous babies were judged during the fair’s baby show. Each night the crowd could watch a fireworks display. A bowery dance also was held each evening near the Exhibition Building. Local police were in charge of the security at the fair but federal officers also were on duty to make sure there were no violations of the liquor laws. The fair had specially designated days, including Kenmare Day and Minot Day. Some important meetings also were held during the fair, including one at the grandstand with farmers and others interested in the organization of a proposed Spring Wheat Growers Union. Its primary purpose would be to secure a price for farmers’ grain products that would yield farmers a satisfactory profit, the Minot Daily News reported. General admission to the fair was 50 cents for adults (30 cents after 5 p.m.) and 25 cents for children ages 6 to 12. Children under 6 were admitted free. Also, a one-horse vehicle could get in for single admission of 25 cents; two or more horse vehicle, 50 cents; an automobile, 50 cents; livery automobile for all fair days, $5; and express, baggage delivery and supply wagons for all fair days, $4. Grandstand general admission was 35 cents; reserved section, 50 cents; and boxes, 75 cents. At the close of the first Ward County Fair, the event was declared “a remarkable success,” the Minot Daily News reported. The Ward County Fair was a forerunner of today’s North Dakota State Fair. Last year the N.D. State Fair celebrated its 50th anniversary in observance of officially becoming a state fair in 1965. The 1965 North Dakota Legislature approved Minot as the official state fair and the 1966 fair was the first official State Fair. This year’s State Fair in Minot will be held July 21-29.

WILDWOOD COUNTRY CLUB BURLINGTON Wildwood Golf Course, located along the banks of the Souris River in Burlington, provides a near perfect setting for both nature lovers and golfers. It is 338 or 311 yards long depending on the tee you play off, and has a slight angle to the left as golfes approach the hole. The ninth hole is also a par 4. The hole that has a sharp turn to the left about three quarters of the way to the hole. The yardage on this hole is between 356 and 376 yards. The course also plays host to a couple’s league (Monday), women’s league (Wednesday), and a men’s league (Thursday). HORSESHOE CLUB SEASON IS UNDER WAY Star City Golf• Velva
When it comes to golf in this region of the state, one of the best known secrets may very well be Star City Golf Course, located at 4525 Highway 41 North in Velva. The course opened in 2003 and is a par-36 for nine holes. The overall distance of the course is 2,768 yards that offer water hazards, sand traps and trees. It addition to the nine-hole course, Star Valley also provides a a driving range, putting green with cart rentals and cart storage. During the week, Green fees to play at Star Valley range from $18 for nine holes to $21 for 18 holes. Over the weekend (Friday to Sunday), green fees range from $21 for nine holes to $24 for 18. The course also offers senior discounts on Tuesdays. Seniors play 18 holes for $18. Cart rentals are $10 for nine holes, and $15 for 18 holes. The course also hosts a weekly men’s league every Wednesday, while a women’s league is held every Thursday. Memberships for Star City are competitive. One of the most relaxing recreational sports in Minot is probably one of the least known about. The club kicked off another season on May 9 with its weekly play the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, located at 400 9th Street SW. Competition is held every Tuesday through the end of August. Unlike many other sports that are usually comprised of teams, horseshoes is an individual sport, at least in Minot. “It’s kind of bowling,” said Kammie Anderson, who has been participating in horseshoes for 10 years. The first night of action, participates played three games to determine their handicaps. The objective of horseshoes is to get your horseshoes closer to the stake than your opponent. Any shoe must be within the width of one horseshoe of the stake to be considered for points. The closest horseshoe to the stake earns the thrower one point. If a thrower has the two closest horseshoes to the stakes that individual is awarded two points. Ringers are worth three points. A ringer is when a horseshoe is thrown and it encircles the stake so the ends can be touched with a straight edge without touching the stake. The Minot Horseshoe Club is open to men, women and juniors. The cost is $35 for men and women, while juniors play for free. For additional information, call Harvey at 833-4619.

lowest in the nation. Seventy percent to 75 percent of MSU students receive financial assistance in the form of grants, loans, on-campus employment or scholarships. Room and board rates are among the most affordable of any four-year undergraduate university in North Dakota. The university offers 61 undergraduate degree programs, six master’s degree programs, one specialist degree and many popular pre-professional programs. MSU offers nine bachelor’s degree programs online - management, management information systems, marketing, international business, applied management, applied business information technology, special education, nursing (RN to BSN) and general studies. Three graduate programs also are offered online. A student can also complete a two-year degree in human services: intellectual and developmental disabilities. Those attending Minot State University tout the oneon-one relationship with instructors, which they feel is vital to student success. The average student to faculty ratio is 15 to 1, allowing instructors take a personal interest in students and their futures. There is plenty for students to do when not studying. Extracurricular activities include everything from student government to theater to music, with more than 60 clubs or organizations from which to choose. The Student Activities Committee regularly sponsors campus events such as comedians, hypnotists, intramurals, karaoke and the always popular grocery bingo.
