Visit Minot, the Minot Convention & Visitors Bureau, welcomes you to
“The Magic City” The city of Minot was founded in 1886 when the Great Northern Railway’s construction crew set up with winter camp. As if by magic, a tent town formed practically overnight and grew to a population of 5,000 in just a few months, giving us our best known nickname, “The Magic City”. The Minot Convention and Visitors Bureau is located in the heart of the city at the Scandinavian Heritage Park. The park is one of the prominent locations in the city that you won’t want to miss during your visit to Minot. The Scandinavian Heritage Park is a lasting legacy, a gift of remembrance for future generations. The Visitors Center provides enhanced tourist information about the Heritage Park, as well as information about the many Minot area attractions and services along with maps, statewide tourist material and a gift shop. Minot has many welcoming accommodations for you whether you are visiting for the weekend or longer. From our historic downtown, legendary parks and zoo, or unforgettable museums, you can find it all here in Minot. Minot is proud to be home to the North Dakota State Fair, the largest event in the state. The state fair draws over 300,000 people annually to our city every July. Minot is also proud to host the largest Scandinavian festival in all of North America called Norsk Hostfest. This festival is held in the fall and features world class entertainment, authentic Scandinavian cuisine and much more! Minot offers other activities and events throughout the year including the Minot Symphony Orchestra, Souris Valley Sabre Dogs baseball, the Y’s Men’s Rodeo, the Big One Art and Craft Fair, iMagicon, Ribfest, and sporting events to name a few. Minot is home to the MAYSA Arena, which features the Minot Minotauros Hockey Team. The facility is the only one in the region that hosts three sheets of ice under one roof. Minot is pleased to have the largest airport in the state offering three airlines with numerous flights daily and plenty of parking. Amtrak also offers passenger railroad service from Minot to the west coast as well as east to Chicago. Coupled with several state-of-the-art- meeting facilities, a wide variety of restaurants, shopping and over 2,600 hotel rooms, Minot is the perfect place for your next meeting, conference, sports event, or leisure getaway. THE MAGIC CITY! The Minot Area Chamber of Commerce, along with our 730 members, welcomes you! The Chamber is made up of small businesses, corporations, service groups and nonprofit organizations. We are happy you have chosen Minot for your destination. Minot was founded in 1886. The community became known as the “Magic City” because, as the railroad was making its way through town, winter hit. The townspeople said the town went up so fast it was practically up overnight….like magic! We have had a growth spurt over the last few years, another chapter in our magical history and it includes a new airport. North Dakota is number two in the nation in oil production, but Agriculture is still the state’s number one industry. Enjoy the great places to shop and eat, as well as the great outdoors. We are very proud of the Roosevelt Park Zoo which has red pandas, giraffes, an aviary and new exhibits are under construction for the lions and tigers. Shopping and restaurants have something for everyone whether you are in downtown Minot, at the malls or anywhere else. The Scandinavian Heritage Park, Taube Museum of Art, Dakota Territory Air Museum and Northwest Art Center are just a few of the places you’ll want to stop and check out while you are here. We hope you will also head outdoors and go golfing at any one of our many courses in our area; check with the Pro shop at Souris Golf Course for special accommodations for kids. If you are in town for one of our many major events, like the N.D. State Fair, Norsk Høstfest or the Downtown Wine Walk, be sure to check out the aforementioned shopping, museums and restaurants as well. We’re glad you’ve chosen Minot and hope you will enjoy your time here!

‘THE MAGIC CITY’ Minot, located in the valley of the Souris River, is named for Henry Davis Minot, a close associate of James J. Hill, the “Empire Builder,” who was at the helm of the Great Northern Railway. Initially, the city began as a tent town when the Great Northern was pushing west in the 1880s. When construction on the railroad halted to build a bridge across a coulee west of Minot (Gassman Coulee Trestle), a large tent town immediately sprang up which was generally assumed to be the start of permanent settlement. When the selected townsite of Minot became known, the tent town was replaced almost overnight and the new city grew so rapidly it was called “The Magic City.” Minot’s post office was established Feb. 12, 1887. Minot’s current location was selected in November 1886, and was incorporated as a city in 1887. Today, Minot is a trade center for an area including Canada and Montana as well as northwest and north central North Dakota. The city lies within the eastern boundaries of the oil-rich Williston Basin. The city has a population of 49,450, according to the last population estimate in 2015.

Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot is the oldest public zoo in North Dakota. In 2021, the zoo will celebrate its centennial. In April, the zoo received the Favorite Attraction Award from Visit Minot, the local convention and visitors bureau. Community people made the selection by voting on social media. About 166 inhabitants of various species all over the world make their home at Roosevelt Park Zoo. The number increases dramatically when about 3,000 honey bees arrive from a local beekeeper on loan to the zoo for a display in the Discovery Barn. Among the newest residents of the zoo are a golden eagle, a female kangaroo and her joey, a Kirk’s dik-dik calf, and another bald eagle, kookabura and siamang gibbon. A great horned owl who recently joined the other three great horned owls is the zoo’s oldest resident at the age of 36. The newest great horned owl, a former ambassador for animals at the Minnesota Zoo, has retired to Minot’s zoo. New habitats for the African lions and Amur tigers are being constructed at the zoo and are scheduled to open in the summer of 2019. The Centennial Capital Campaign was launched in December 2017, to finance the new habitats for the tigers and lions. The tigers new area is located near the zoo’s Visitor Center and the lions habitat is on the east loop of the zoo where other African species are located. A renovation of the existing cat habitats will provide new habitat for the Amur leopards and snow leopards. That project is in the design phase, with the cost in addition to the African lions and Amur tigers new habitats. Despite going through two major floods in the past 48 years – the flood of 1969 and the flood of 2011 – the zoo has bounced back each time into a fully viable facility for visitors with a wide variety of zoo inhabitants plus providing special programs for the zoo experience.

The 2015 zoo season was the first season since the 2011 flood with all zoo inhabitants. Additions of new animals, new exhibits and the participation in the Species Survival Program have greatly enhanced the zoo. Starting three years ago, the zoo began remaining open through the winter months, weather permitting. The winter opening offers visitors a different type of zoo experience. Zoo staff continually work to increase visitors’ experience and provide new and year-round educational programs for all ages at the zoo. Becky Dewitz is zoo director. Minot’s zoo drew more than 95,000 visitors in 2018. It reaches more than 10,000 students through regional education and outreach programs. Roosevelt Park Zoo has attained continuous accreditation by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) since 1988. It is among only 23% of zoos in North America AZA accredited, the highest accreditation standard in the world.

Bill Gross, founder and president of Farm Rescue, will serve as the grand marshal of the North Dakota State Fair Parade in Minot on Saturday, July 20. “It is a true honor to be selected as grand marshal for the North Dakota State Fair Parade,” Gross told the Minot Daily News. “The values upon which I was raised as a fourth generation farmer truly represent the foundation of Farm Rescue and the people of North Dakota. Honest, hardworking and compassionate people who support the mission of Farm Rescue have been the key to the program’s success.

However, his heart never left the farming and ranching community. From a bird’s eye view as a Boeing 747 captain, flying back and forth across our nation at 40,000 feet, Gross kept looking at the farms below. The changing demographics of rural America – fewer farms, fewer children per family, fewer neighbors – troubled him. And always in the back of his mind, he remembered his father’s concern about what would happen to their farm should anything debilitating happen. On a long flight over the Pacific Ocean one day, when another pilot asked him what he was going to do when he retired, Gross didn’t hesitate: “I’m going to be this Good Samaritan that buys a tractor and goes around helping farm families plant their crops when they have a major injury or illness.” That generated some laughter until his coworker realized Gross was serious. “Well, why wait until you retire?” he challenged. Bill Gross launched Farm Rescue in 2005 and continues to serve in a volunteer capacity leading the Farm Rescue board. He also flies all over the world for UPS but keeps in close contact with Farm Rescue. The nonprofit has become a well-known, successful organization with dedicated volunteers throughout the nation and a strong following of supporters.

FAIRGROUNDS Minot Flea Market hosts eight events a year at the North Dakota State Fair Center located on the N. D. State Fairgrounds. You name it, if you are looking for anything rare, unusual or out of the ordinary it likely can be found at a Minot Flea Market. “Anything from rare antiques to jewelry to make-up to junk,” said Leanne Zeltinger, who co-manages eight Minot Flea Markets each year. “We also have two or three coin dealers that bring in rare coins.” You can never be sure what you’ll find at vendor tables, which typically number close to 90. Vendors hail from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Montana. Canada gets involved too.

FLEA MARKETS “Canadians come down. They are just avid flea marketers. They love clocks and old rotary telephones,” said Zeltinger. “There’s something different every time, even if the same vendors are there.” Crowds for the two-day events average 2,000 or more visitors. The record for visitors, said Zeltinger, was about 3,500. Sometimes people can’t wait until the doors open for a flea market. It’s not uncommon for Zeltinger to get calls from people asking that a vendor hold a certain item until they arrive and can make the purchase. More information on Minot Flea Market can be found on Facebook.

MINOT STATE SEASON 54
SUMMER THEATRE
Another full season will begin for the Minot State University Summer Theatre and like last year, the theater will be bringing in upgrades. Last year they introduced new lighting. This year for season 54, the theater will be showcasing an upgraded sound system. The new sound system is coming after some successful fundraising and some much appreciated help from Hess, according to MSU Summer Theatre artistic director Chad Gifford “We are excited to see how it all works out,” he said. The new sound system isn’t the only new thing being brought out for Season 54. The summer theater is also starting a new way to purchase tickets: online. Patrons of the theater will now be able to log in online, pick what seats they want and purchase the tickets and avoid the lines. “This means we will be allowing credit cards for purchasing tickets this year,” explained Gifford. “It’s a very exciting change.” Season 54 of the summer theater will start in June. The list of plays chosen for the season are expected to wow and entertain patrons of the outdoor theater. “This summer we are bringing to the stage four different shows which have never been seen up on the hill before,” said Gifford.

On June 26, actors will take to the summer theater stage to put on “Cash on Delivery.” This play will be directed by Jacob Jenkins and will end on July 1. Gifford will direct the third play of the season. “Big Fish” will run July 10-15. The final play of season, “Beauty and the Beast,” will be another musical and take place July 24-28 and July 30 through Aug. 3. This will be directed by Brett Olson. All performances of all four plays will begin at 8:30 p.m. and take place in the MSU Summer Theatre. The outdoor theater is placed just north of the MSU Dome. 701-852-3385 Located on the North Dakota State Fairgrounds, the MCID boasts a 660-foot-long dragstrip where racers of all ages and skill levels compete in a meticulously-regulated environment. After kicking off its spring season in early May, the MCID is now set to host its Spring Classic early this June. The first event, which takes place on June 7, is Flashlight Friday. For those with an urge to burn some rubber, the event allows the public to take to the dragstrip and challenge their friends or themselves for a mere $5. The same cost also applies to anyone who wishes to be a spectator. Following Flashlight Friday on the seventh is Jackpot Racing on June 8 and International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Points Racing on the June 9. All five classes (Top Et., Mod Et., Street Et., Bikes/Sleds and Junior Dragster) will compete in the latter. The MCID ensures the utmost safety for its racers. All racing vehicles are put through a standard IHRA inspection that checks things such as the car’s battery, tires and seat belt. As a further precaution, fire protection crews and registered emergency medical technicians are also on site at all times. The MCID is set to continue all the way through September.
