marking just the second losing season authored by the Magi since 1996. Last year we had a group of guys that battled, and we have some kids who got valuable experience who are coming back and looking to change the overall record,” Hendershot said. “Last year was kind of a situation where we got into some games and other teams just made plays in crunch time.” Despite the down year overall, there were some encouraging moments for Minot in 2020, namely the two dominant wins the team did earn. The Magi cruised past Dickinson by a 23-0 final score in Week 3 and dismantled Williston 39-14 in the season finale, ending the year on a positive note and leaving

Both the coaching staff and the players alike are now eager to put 2020 behind them and return to the promised land this fall. With practice just getting started, Hendershot noted that throughout the first week the team will be focusing on continuing the strong work ethic he and his coaching staff have seen from their players during camps already held this summer. “Our focus is to pick up the progress and the work that we’ve had through our summer strength camps,” he said. “It’s about our base installs and getting the x’s and o’s down, as well as getting everyone working togeth-

er as a team. The next two weeks, we need to compete within the team but build that team camaraderie and that unified front that we’re going to need going into the season.” The team will also be locking down final positions in the weeks leading up to the Aug. 27 season-opener against West Fargo, as well as ensuring everyone is up to speed on the playbook and working together as a unit. The two components will be crucial in the program achieving its lofty goal on the heels of a two-win season. “Playoffs, for sure,” senior running back and defensive back Hunter Ruzicka said of the team’s goal. “We think we have a real shot this year, we

might actually get to see the ‘ship and hold up that trophy at the end, but we all still have to put in the work. We can’t just expect it to happen.” Ruzicka will be among the team leaders this season along with fellow senior and starting quarterback Trevor Emke. Other returning veterans the Magi will lean on include Kaleb Spitzer and Kaydn Turnbow. In his shortened junior season, Ruzicka still accrued 362 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on 60 carries, good for the 11th-most yards in the Western Dakota Association. Emke was also among the conference leaders in 2020, throwing for 640 total yards, fifthmost in the WDA, and

Bishop Ryan reloads for 2021

August 2021

Robert Brewer/MDN

By ROBERT BREWER

Sports Editor rbrewer@minotdailynews.com Rather than taking on a rebuilding mindset this fall, the Bishop Ryan Lions and fifth-year head coach Roger Coleman fully expect to reload for another run at the state title. Last year, Bishop Ryan’s quest for a Class A state championship ended in the semifinal round of the postseason against eventual champion Langdon Area-Edmore Munich. Langdon was the same team that denied Bishop Ryan in the state championship round back in 2019. According to Coleman, this year’s Lions squad remains undeterred in their hunt for a state crown despite recent playoff setbacks against a familiar foe. “Our goal is to win our region, and that hasn’t changed at all,” Coleman tells The Minot Daily News. “Once the play-

August 2021 offs start, I feel like we will be ready to compete with anyone. I expect us to play fast and physical all year long.” In preparation for this fall, the Lions began training camp on Aug. 5, a few days earlier than usual. With six seniors lost to graduation, Coleman says it was good to get a head start on camp as it helped to incorporate the returning players into expanded roles. One key player returning for the Lions in 2021 is senior wide receiver Zach Hendrickson. An All-Region performer as a junior, Hendrickson caught 23 passes for 452 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. Known for his big play capability, Hendrickson’s 19.7 yards per reception average ranked second on the team last year. The 5-foot-11 inch senior will have big shoes to fill as last year’s Bishop Ryan senior duo of Jaxon Feller and Logan Merck combined for a total of 43 all-purpose touchdowns in 2020. Coach Coleman says he plans to utilize Hendrickson’s skills in multiple ways this coming season. “He’s going to play all over the field for us. Wideout, running back, quarterback and special teams, we just want the ball in his hands as much as possible,” the Lions coach adds. Speaking of quarterback, Bishop Ryan will also be looking to fill the void

left by last year’s starting senior Nick Sanders, who threw for 24 touchdowns against just four interceptions. With backup passer Merck also moving on due to graduation, freshman Jett Lundeen is the only roster holdover with experience at the quarterback position last year. In 12 games as an eighth grader, Lundeen completed 13 of 21 passes for 163 yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, Coach Coleman says Lundeen has enjoyed a productive training camp and will be the team’s starting quarterback going into the year. Key returning players include senior outside linebacker and tight end Josh Will, who, like Hendrickson, was an All-Region player a year ago. A consistent playmaker on the defensive side of the ball for the Lions in 2020, Will led the team in sacks with six. The Second-Team AllState selection also posted 13.5 tackles for loss a year ago, second-best among Bishop Ryan defenders. Also at linebacker, senior Rylan Vibeto will look to provide a physical presence for the Lions. His 48 tackles a year ago was second on the team, and Vibeto also totaled 4.5 tackles for loss and two pass breakups. Other returning two-way players include All-Region honorable mention senior lineman Jacob Fricke, sophomore lineman Coy Okeson, junior Brett McKay and se-

Nedrose football looking to improve on ’20 finish By RYAN LADIKA

Nedrose High 2021 Football Schedule

The Nedrose High School Cardinals’ football squad will have plenty of room to grow throughout the 2021 fall season, beginning with, arguably, the most important position on the field. Junior Josh Kalamaha, a former wide receiver and cornerback for the redbirds, will take the leap this year as the starting quarterback for the varsity squad. The first snap he takes from under center will be his first at the position above the junior varsity level. “He’s put a lot of work in and we’re looking for him to be able to make the throws and the reads, as well as run the ball a little bit and help us out,” head coach Tommy Weidler said. Kalamaha has spent the last two seasons as the leader of the junior varsity offense, in addition to the time he spent at wideout and cornerback with the varsity team. The versatility and athleticism he demonstrated at his other positions under Weidler’s watchful eye led his coach to trust that he could handle the signal-calling duties on the varsity squad. To ensure that Kalamaha is ready for his newest challenge, Weidler has been working with the quarterback on building a solid foundation with the fundamentals of the position.

Cardinals quarterback Josh Kalamaha (left) prepares to throw the ball during a preseason practice at Nedrose High School. “We’ve been working with him mechanically, on throwing the ball,” Weidler said. “His footwork is a big one we worked on this summer, and then understanding what the defense is doing, and what they’re going to give us as far as where the ball should go.” The next step for Kalamaha is, after the snap, looking for matchups that will prove advantageous for his offense. If none are present in any one play, he possesses the athleticism to create offense by running the ball himself. Around Kalamaha, Weidler has been working with some of the younger players on the offensive line

to set the quarterback up for success starting with the team’s first-week matchup against Des Lacs-Burlington. “We have some guys who aren’t quite as experienced as we’ve had in the past,” Weidler said. “We’re getting caught up to speed with things. Up front, we’ve been really working on understanding where we’re going, where we’re trying to run the ball, and who we’re blocking in pass protection. We’re trying to get Kalamaha reps to see and understand everything behind the offensive line.” Senior Caleb Walker will be a key factor Weidler will be looking for production from on the offensive line as he returns from an ACL injury. Also complementing Kalamaha will the likes of thirdyear running back Cameron Bailey, senior wide receiver Joe Roberts and 2020 Class A All-State Second-Team tight end Mitch Heinert. through official two-week preseason period. There is always room for improvement, most notably the ever-present need to become more physical on both sides of the ball, but the squad entered the season-opener with a strong work ethic and a hunger to continue to get better, according to the sixth-year head coach. “Defensively, we need to tackle better,” he said. “That’s a big one, just playing more physical. And then offensively, everything always starts up front, so on the offensive line, we just have to continue to grow and be physical and sharp.” After a 14-12 loss at the hands of Des Lacs-Burlington to start the season on Aug. 20, the Cardinals are slated to face Stanley at home on Sept. 10 and New Town on the road Sept. 17. After that, Nedrose will host Velva for a non-district contest on Sept. 24. On Oct. 1, the Cardinals will do battle with the Rugby Panthers at home before wrapping up the regular season on the road against Bishop Ryan on Oct. 15.

Sports Editor rbrewer@minotdailynews.com Coming off a 6-3 campaign a year ago, which included four straight wins to end the season, fifth-year Rugby head coach Travis Risovi has high hopes for 2021. “We have a lot of returning players who have varsity minutes. We finished last season playing very good football and felt that we could have been a playoff team with a solid 6-3 finish. The goals are set high this year,” Risovi tells The Minot Daily News. The optimistic Risovi will be coaching a Panthers squad that capped off the 2020 regular season with an emphatic 41-8 home victory over Bottineau on Oct. 16. This year’s club features 16 returning starters, eight of which will start on offense, and eight more starters returning to the defensive side of the ball. As far as leadership and experience goes, 10 players on this year’s team will be seniors. Early on in training camp, Coach Risovi is encouraged by the overall intensity level displayed by his group. The Rugby football mentor also expects his established nucleus to build on last year’s late surge with hard work and dedication. “So far I like what I have seen. The team is working hard, they seemed to be very motivated, and practices have been very competitive. In 2020, our young players

on the ground. While Vetsch was one of two All-Region selections for Rugby, Schneibel and Tuenge both earned honorable mentions for their efforts a year ago. Vetsch and Tuenge also were key contributors on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker. While Vetsch racked up 84 total tackles, a pair of sacks and three interceptions from his middle linebacker position, Tuenge made his presence felt at outside linebacker with 51 tackles. Other defensive standouts from last year’s squad include safety Erik Foster. Back in the fold for the upcoming fall campaign, Foster’s playmaking skills led to eight interceptions and Rugby’s other All-Region selection. Up front, Dylan Bartsch was a frequent visitor of opposing backfields as he tallied six sacks from the defensive end position. At season’s end, Bartsch was recognized as one of Rugby’s four All-Region honorable mention players. Both Foster and Bartsch are underclassmen who will be relied upon to make plays for a defense that surrendered an average of just 12

points per game in Rugby’s final four contests. Other defensive leaders include region honorable mention selection Lathan DeMontigny who totaled three sacks from the defensive end position, linebacker Austin Schneibel who registered 50 tackles and cornerback Logan Harner who had five passes breakups last fall. Fellow corner Macen Heisler also contributed to the Panthers cause with three pass breakups, an interception and a defensive touchdown. Following a season opening 32-0 win over South Prairie on Aug. 20, Rugby plans to host the Bishop Ryan Lions on Aug. 27. The Panthers then plan to travel to Stanley for a matchup with the Blue Jays on Sept. 3.
