OUTDOOR DECOR THAT’S ‘OUT THERE’ AND EDGY RIGHT AT HOME:

By KIM COOK Associated Press

The outdoor furnishings market has been dominated for years by wicker-look resin furniture and beachy prints. Spindly folding lawn chairs have given way to deep, comfy seating, and fabric choices have grown from sweaty, rough plastics to weatherproof linen, soft cotton, even velvet. The living room has most certainly moved outdoors. But for those whose design sensibility skews toward the avant garde, there haven’t been a lot of options. Until now. More and more designers and makers are producing cool, imaginative pieces for backyard and balcony. If you’re into artsy d√ cor, there’s no reason why your outdoor space can’t reflect that as well. British artist David Harber has developed a global following for his innovative outdoor sculptures, which play with light and landscape. In his Oxfordshire studio, Harber and his team create sculptures, water features and sundials out of metal. Sunlight filters

through a piece called Mantle, made of bronze petals fused together and gilded on the inside; the light transforms the middle into molten gold. One of his most popular pieces, Torus, is a circular expanse of super-polished steel that reflects the landscape or water in front of it. It’s there in front of you, yet appears transparent. Armillary spheres were the first thing Harber learned to make, and he says the marriage of art and science drew him to the form. “I’ve made (them) for tiny cottage gardens, and for hotels; they have a universal appeal,” he says. Available in brass, steel and bronze, the spheres can be custom engraved. Some people have commissioned phrases with personal meaning; others have had their spheres etched with family names, house names, latitude and longitude, or distances to significant destinations. In his Brooklyn, New York, studio Opiary, sculptor Robert Remer takes a more freeform approach to his artful outdoor pieces. See DECOR — Page 5

His sculptures, planters and seating, made of steel armatures and resin-fortified cement, look otherworldly. The Archaic planter collection of abstract, organic shapes resembles pieces of a dinosaur skeleton or water-eroded rock. Little niches throughout the pieces can be planted with moss, alpines and succulents. The Drillium chair and chaise were inspired by aircraft construction and bones. Curvy, sensuous lines with circular cutouts and little crevices for plants contrast with the hefty presence of the concrete material. You could see these pieces on an interplanetary patio. The Museum of Modern Art’s store is carrying Moroso’s M’Afrique collection of colorful outdoor furniture, handmade in Senegal with woven materials and painted steel. M’Afrique showcases the region’s innovative weaving craft; Moroso teamed with designers like Tord Boontje to create the collection. Among the pieces: the Ban-

jooli table, with bright yellow polyethylene cords woven to evoke overlapping feathers and inspired by the courtship dance of the ostrich. The Shadowy armchair has a Seussian exaggerated profile with high back, curvy canopy, and eye-popping colorways like black and white or orange and yellow. Thomas Heatherwick’s Spun chair, made by Magi for Herman Miller , looks like a giant child’s spin top. Placed upright, it’s sculpture. Tipped on its side, it’s a playful, comfortable seat. Spun comes in black, white or red. Loll Designs’ Rapson chair at Perigold is a futuristic plastic version of a traditional wing chair; it comes in a bunch of colors including leaf green, apple red and sunset orange. Finally, for fans of a certain HBO series, Amedeo Designs’ Throne chair, available at Houzz.com , might be just the thing. Intricately carved and substantially sized, the piece is actually made of lightweight resin – the perfect place from which to have a commanding view of whatever the backyard games might be.

MOVING TIPS to make unpacking easy 1401 11th Ave SW Suite #2 - Minot

(StatePoint) When it comes to moving, we usually focus on the process of getting organized and boxing up valuables. But we often forget about the debatably more stressful part of moving: unpacking. In fact, Americans take an average of 182 days — more than six months! — to finally unpack the last box after moving into a new home, according to Duck Brand research. To make settling into your new abode much easier, start by thinking about the process backwards and consider these tips:

Our Experts, Your Dream Home “We Are Alliance”

1. Measure everything during the home inspection

Use your time on inspection day to collect all room and cabinet dimensions. This will help determine if furniture will fit, where items will go and how much storage is available. Pro tip: Precut shelf liner to instantly line drawers and cupboards on move-in day.

Free Mortgage Pre-Qualification in as little as 24 hours.

2. Pack based on where it will go, not where it was

Envisioning where items will go in your new space is key. Then, label each box with its contents, as well as the room where it should be unpacked. Not sure what moving supplies you’ll need? The free online moving calculator at DuckBrand.com is a great resource. Simply input your number of bedrooms and baths, and you’ll receive a printable/sharable shopping list based on your specific needs.

3. Use plastic bags and tape to keep pieces together

For smooth assembly, use packaging tape and small plastic bags to attach screws, nuts and bolts to the bottom of dismantled furniture. This can prevent losing those small, essential pieces and perhaps even reduce the number of hardware store trips on move-in day.

4. Utilize tools that make opening boxes easy

Choosing a heavy-duty packing tape is critical to ensure boxes stay secure, but searching for a blade to open boxes while unpacking can be frustrating. Instead, try Duck brand Mover’s Edge, a unique heavy-duty packaging tape and refillable dispenser system that makes it easy to seal and unseal boxes — no blade or boxcutter needed. As tape flows through the dispenser, the edges on each side of the tape are slightly folded. This allows for easy removal when you’re ready to unpack; just lift up the folded edge by hand and pull off the tape.

5. Avoid breaks and spills

Fifty-five percent of Americans have experienced an important item being damaged during a move, according to Duck Brand research. To make sure your valuables arrive intact, use products that offer increased protection like Bubble Wrap cushioning and Foam Pouches. Pro tip: For additional safeguarding, use plastic grocery or storage bags to contain any items that could potentially spill.

6. Pack storage items in plastic bins rather than boxes While cardboard boxes are an easy and cost-effective way to transport the majority of your belongings, plastic storage containers are more ideal for seasonal items that may not be unpacked, but instead stay in storage. Not only will the bins shield contents from the environment, like a damp basement or dusty attic, but their uniform size also will make it easy to create an organized and efficient storage space. For additional moving tips and how to choose the best supplies for your relocation, go to DuckBrand.com. Regardless of whether you’re moving across the country or down the street, the best way to guarantee a smooth transition is to plan ahead.

FAMILY FEATURES

espite the comfort and convenience it affords, modern society is contributing to a vanishing relationship with the natural environment. However, there are plenty of ways to bring nature indoors to reap the benefits of an earthy connection inside your home. According to a survey commissioned by the Velux Group, a gap is growing between the time Americans spend outdoors and the time they’d like to spend in nature. In the United States, 63% of survey participants said they average one hour or less a week in nature, but 88% agreed they would like to spend more time. In addition, the majority of respondents said they believe nature, daylight and fresh air have a positive impact on stress levels, and most also agreed those factors have a positive impact on mental well-being. “Exposure to nature such as trees, plants and views of open spaces has been found to improve the cognitive ability to focus and read social cues,” said Arie Greenleaf, associate professor of counseling at Seattle University. “Even ADHD symptoms in

8

HOME MARKET AUGUST 2019

children are mitigated by views of and interactions with nature in a host of different ways. Worker productivity, how people feel about the work they do and the level of engagement, improves with a view of nature.” Despite ample research demonstrating the benefits, the study revealed a common theme, with 85% of participants believing they spent more time in nature as children than children do today. That’s a trend that translates into adult habits, too. “With work and family responsibilities, we can’t always fit spending time outside into our busy schedules, effectively making us the indoor generation,” said Peter Foldbjerg, head of Daylight, Energy and Indoor Climate for The Velux Group. “One thing we can do is improve how our homes connect to nature: From houseplants and nature-inspired art to skylights and screened porches, there are a wide variety of options for creating nature connections in the place we spend most of our time – our homes.” Learn how to bring more nature into your home with these decorating and design ideas:

Houseplants Living plants not only add a touch of the outdoors, but they also help clean the air inside your home. In smaller spaces, even a few pots of herbs can add a refreshing touch of nature. If flat surfaces and floor space are at a premium, get creative with your wall space and incorporate shelving and wall-mounted planters.

Sunshine and fresh air Whether it’s from windows or skylights, bringing natural light and fresh air inside can keep your space fresh and inviting. There are scientifically proven correlations between natural light exposure and mood, as well as your body’s ability to maintain its circadian rhythm. Refreshing the air in your home can help eliminate volatile organic compounds, pet dander and microparticles from cooking and cleaning. If your home is lacking in natural light, a skylight may be easier to add than a window, and skylights bring in twice as much light as vertical windows; their angle allows more of the sun’s rays to reach farther into the room. Some skylights, including many offered by Velux, also offer venting options that can contribute to cleaner air.

Nature-inspired art Studies have shown that simply viewing photos or paintings of nature scenes has mental and physical benefits. You can also use decorative mirrors to reflect natural light and make a space feel larger and brighter.

Botanically inspired patterns Look to pillows, area rugs and wallpaper to incorporate patterns inspired by flowers, foliage or landscapes outside. These decorative elements can boost your spirits and create a welcoming environment indoors by reflecting the outdoor world.

Natural materials Sisal rugs and baskets, wood planking and stone countertops or side tables can add texture and a touch of the natural world to your interiors. These materials let you incorporate nature into your design aesthetic with natural textures that not only look stylish but feel great, too. Find more ideas for integrating the outdoors into your home design at whyskylights.com/outside-in.

Connect with Nature at Work If you work outside your home, at least a third of your day may have you stuck inside an office. Make your work environment more appealing with these ideas that let you embrace nature even while you’re on the clock.

Incorporate natural life with a desk plant. You may feel more refreshed by that touch of green, and it helps clean the air around you, too. Find the sunlight. Today’s offices actively promote free-range working, so find a sofa near a window and get your best work done there. Or spend a few hours working outside each day. If your office design is behind the times, take a daily walk outside during your lunch break. Surround yourself with natural materials. Transform your desk-scape with a bamboo monitor stand, stone smartphone holder or woven seagrass inbox. Trick the senses with natural soundscapes. Earbuds are a must in today’s open-plan offices. Instead of playing music, escape with nature-inspired tunes like rain, wind in the trees or forest birds. Select art influenced by Mother Nature. Decorate with nature-inspired art, whether it’s photos of landscapes or a sunflower print.

Tips for moving with a pet

10 HOME MARKET AUGUST 2019

(StatePoint) Your furball is part of the family, so if you’re like most, you don’t make major life decisions without thinking of your pet’s needs — including where you live and how you move into a new home. When people decide on new homes and communities, pet priorities are often equal to or more important than human-focused amenities, according to the 2019 Mayflower Mover Insights Survey. American pet owners say one-third of their overall decision to move was related to their pets. What’s more, survey respondents cited a willingness to pay significantly more in living costs per month (32 percent) and even forgo perks like shorter commutes and updated kitchens in favor of petfriendly features.

Pets may get the priority for perks when their humans relocate, but moving is still a stressful activity for animals. Half of pet owners reported their pets struggled to adjust to new homes. However, there’s good news: more than nine in 10 owners say their pets adjusted to new settings in less than a month. And, more than 90 percent agree that wherever they

and their pets are together is instantly home. Planning a move? For tips and insights, visit mayflower.com. With a bit of extra preparation, you can pave the way for a smooth move for everyone in your family, including your pet.

MOVING WITH A PET? CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING: Yard Matters:

Dog owners consider yard size 85 percent of the time, and 82 percent of dog and cat owners consider a fenced-in backyard. If you’re looking to let your dog off-leash or allow your cat into the yard, prioritize homes with fencing and plenty of space for pets to exercise.

Walking Trails:

Don’t just consider the house when home-shopping. Look for neighborhoods offering proximity to parks, dog runs, walking trails and other amenities that make dog-walking safe and enjoyable.

Scope Out Pet Services:

Try not to leave a gap in veterinary care or pet services. If you’re moving far enough away to require a new veterinarian, identify who that will be in advance. If anything arises as you’re settling into your new home, you won’t want to deal with the added stress of researching where to take your sick pet. Likewise, get recommendations for services such as dog walkers, pet sitters or dog boarding so you and your pet can hit the ground running in your new community.

Anticipate Bumps:

\A move can be difficult on pets — dog owners reported their dogs had trouble adapting to new neighborhoods, while cats had more trouble adjusting to new houses. Nine out of 10 dog and cat owners recommend being patient, spending more time with pets and showing them where everything is in the new home.

Pack Pet Gear Wisely:

Make moving day a breeze by keeping all your pet supplies — food, medications, etc. packed in an easy-to-access box that’s clearly labeled. Consider keeping several days’ supply with you and transporting these necessities in your car.

HELLO, YELLOW: Home decor’s upbeat hue should be used right By KIM COOK Associated Press

12 HOME MARKET AUGUST 2019

If ever a color were to be associated with an emotion (OK, blue, we see you), it’s got to be yellow. Upbeat and welcoming, it’s a hue that’s easy to love. But it can be tricky to use when decorating. Bold yellows are eye-catching, but color experts advise caution. Unless you’re prepared to live with bright yellow’s peppy assertiveness, softer, creamier versions might be more prudent choices. Will Taylor, founder of the color blog Bright.Bazaar and an interior design expert at Marshalls, loves yellow in all its iterations. “To me, it’s happiness personified,” he says. “As soon as I see it, I feel joy.” Better Homes & Gardens Style Director Jessica Thomas calls yellow “sunshine in a can.” And Dee Schlotter, senior color marketing manager for PPG Paints , says yellow is often seen as the signature hue for “happy.” “Bright, energizing yellows are known to enhance the mind and help creativity flow,” she says. “We saw ‘Gen Z yellow’ bubble to the surface last year, with colors like Crushed Pineapple reflecting the optimism and boldness of that generation.” Schlotter says yellow was a close runner-up for PPG’s 2019 Color of the Year. Night Watch, a moody green-gray, ultimately took the title, but Golden Field — a dramatic mustard yellow — was a strong second.

wallpapers that range in style from realistic to retro. Marshalls has some festive, lemon-printed melamine serveware that would add zest to summer parties. For more dressed-up get-togethers, Williams-Sonoma has porcelain plates decorated with Meyer lemons and framed with a vintage-look botanical border. Ballard Designs offers Sunbrella fabric by the yard with a pretty lemon-and-leaf print that would be great on patio pillows or cushions; there are faux lemon branches here as well, to tuck in a vase or basket. Kitchenaid’s buttercup yellow mixer is a softer version of the hue, while Chantal’s sunny yellow Anniversary tea kettle is a wakerupper. If you’d really like to commit, consider a piece of yellow furniture, or even an appliance. All Modern has well-priced upholstered seating, with clean-lined silhouettes that let the color take center stage. West Elm’s got a set of velvet curtains and a distressed rug in a hue called wasabi that has a golden tone. Bertazzoni and SMEG stock equipment like stoves, fridges and range hoods in fresh yellows. Ready for more? Scandinavian manufacturer Vola has marked its 50th anniversary by releasing Arne Jacobsen’s original 1968 designed bath faucet in a rainbow of colors, and a kicky yellow is one of them. Or put the wild on the walls, with glass subway, mosaic or freeform ceramic tiles from Modwalls . Even the names are as fun as this color: Daffodil; Sunflower; Limoncello.
