What to do to get your grill ready for summer By KATIE WORKMAN Associated Press

does it look gross, it also can be a fire hazard. Use a strong brush, possibly the same kind you use to clean the grill grates, or maybe a nylon brush, depending on the grill material. Personally, I don't care about scratches inside the lid of my grill — I'm just happy when it's clean. A paint scraper is also handy for cleaning out built-up gunk.

There are die-hard grillers who don't see why a little cold or sleet should stand between them and a juicy grilled steak. The rest of us in colder climes throw a cover over our grills for the winter and wheel them into a garage or storage spot, wheeling them out months later as the mercury climbs back up. GET THE GRATES SPARKLING CLEAN Start the season with clean grates, both for sanitary reasons and because you want to kick off your grilling with a beautiful clean grill and beautiful clean grill marks on your food. For a gas grill, turn all the burners to high, shut the lid and let the grill heat for 15 minutes. Open the lid and hopefully everything stuck to the grill will have burned off. Then, just give it a good scrub with a grill brush or grill scraper. Make sure no bristles get stuck on the grill rack. A wadded-up piece of foil held with tongs also does a good job. You can give the clean grate a light brush with oil while it awaits your next grilling session. Haas advises, "If it's been awhile since you've cleaned your grill grates, remove them and take a nylon sponge or hard bristle brush to them along with some tough cleanser. Make sure to rinse and dry them thoroughly before placing back on the grill."

STOCK UP ON FUEL

If you need a new tank of fuel, go grab it before you marinate those chops (and consider a backup tank so you never get caught short in the middle of a fleet of sausages.) If briquets, wood or pellets are your fuel of choice, lay in a supply of those. Jay Buzaid, owner of Powerhouse Appliances in New Milford, Connecticut, says that if you use hardwood charcoal or pellets, then take a close look at any unused fuel from the previous year. If there's any mold, it all needs to be tossed. If it's clean and dry, use it. See GRILL — Page 4

"In the summer, extreme temperature fluctuations from hot to cold cause moisture to build up, and sometimes the hardwood pellets and charcoal get wet from condensation — especially if the grill is in the sun," he says. He tells customers that wet hardwood charcoal can be dried out, but he recommends tossing wet pellets. Regular grill use can help prevent this problem, and he also suggests storing pellets in the manufacturer's bag, which is designed to help them stay dry.

FIND A SAFE PLACE

If possible, your grill should be at least 10 feet from your house, and not near an open window. It should be situated on a fireproof and stable surface like concrete or brick, if possible. Make sure it's somewhere you can monitor at all times when the grill is going.

4

And make sure there isn't an overhang, to prevent fire or carbon monoxide buildup.

CHECK YOUR TOOLS

Did you leave those tools lying on the grill under that cover all winter? Mmmm, been there. Take a good look at your tools, and if you think they aren't shipshape, consider investing in new ones. A worndown grill brush doesn't clean well, and a basting brush that wasn't properly cleaned before the end of the season may need replacing. Get a good instantread thermometer for measuring the internal temperature of meat; it's one of a good griller's secrets to success. Haas loves having long, stainless steel tongs, an oversize spatula, a perforated pan for grilling veggies, and small kitchen towels to protect hands as she puts food on and off the grill. So now that you're ready to grill, the only big decision left is ... what's for dinner?

HOME DECOR 101 Decorating with bold colors F

FAMILY FEATURES

rom dark and moody to vibrant and bold, colorful design is gaining favor among homeowners ditching safe, neutral palettes to create more daring, dramatic spaces. Decorating with deeply saturated colors can be intimidating. Explore these ideas to welcome more bold colors into your home and create inviting spaces for living and entertaining.

6

Walls of color

Say goodbye to beige and embrace the bold color trend by enhancing walls with hues that make a statement. The trick is to avoid making colors so loud that the space loses its stylish appeal. Bold doesn’t necessarily mean bright, so look for muted variations of the shades you prefer. Also remember that when it comes to design, there is such a thing as too much. If painting all the walls in a space will close it in or make it feel lost in the dark, try adding color in more subtle ways, such as an accent wall

HOME MARKET May 2019

(or two), or painting the ceiling as your accent. Another option for implementing vibrant wall color: stick to smaller rooms, where the bold look is less likely to be overwhelming.

Illuminate color with natural light When decorating with statement colors, remember that lighting can make a significant difference in the overall aesthetic. In addition to lighting fixtures, be sure to incorporate plenty of natural light to bring out the best in those bold hues.

To bring natural light deeper into the space, consider skylights as an option with a solution such as Velux No Leak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights, which can bathe the space in natural light and open to bring in fresh air. Another smart way to capture natural light is by installing an option like Sun Tunnel skylights. With their low-profile design, they create a sleek appearance, and installation is also quick and easy. Learn more at whyskylights.com.

Bold furnishings

An often overlooked but essential component of design is the furniture. Creating a colorful, inviting room doesn’t stop with the walls and floors; what’s in the room can bring the colors to life. Think of the space and all its contents, not just the architectural components, as your canvas for creating the space you envision. If you’re hesitant to invest in a pricy couch in a trendy hue, a compromise might come in the form of a richly colored accent table or chair.

Creative cabinetry

Traditional wood grain cabinetry sometimes gives way to far more creative color schemes in kitchens and bathrooms. While white is still a popular choice, and can even be considered bold in the right setting, true color on cabinets is also gaining traction among homeowners. With the right backsplash, countertops and flooring, you can safely install cabinets in a uniform color throughout the kitchen, but another on-trend option is to reserve the color for an island base or just one wall of cabinets. You could even mix and match colors on the tops and bottoms. Detail elements like the hardware provide another opportunity for a bold look. You can enhance the room’s design with standout pulls that lend extra vibrance to the space.

Fabric with flair

Textiles provide nearly unlimited options to balance a bold design. Using lighter fabrics for elements such as draperies, upholstery, rugs and decorative pillows can soften the feel of a room with bold tones. Look for subtle patterns that pull in hints of the deeper hue to bring the look together, or simply coordinate shades from complementary color families.

UNEXPECTED POPS OF COLOR Designers often talk about adding pops of color to bring together a palette, but there are no real rules about where those color enhancements can or should be. Introducing vibrant color in unexpected places can be an especially impactful way to stylize a room. One example is with a skylight blind, which provides a decorative element while also allowing for light control. If you prefer a trendy option like combining dark colors with metallic accents, consider options such as a metallic gold skylight blind from Velux to connect to the room decor below. More than 80 color and pattern choices heighten the drama of a skylight blind, and you can choose from features like room darkening, light filtering and Venetian-style blinds to add function as well.

Did you know?

Manufactured homes and modular or prefabricated homes are both rigorously inspected throughout the construction process in the factory and receive either a State or Federal “seal of approval” before leaving the factory. Manufactured homes are built to the federal building code, often referred to as the “HUD Code,” a performance-based building code. The federal building code allows for greater flexibility in integrating the latest in construction technologies, while still meeting the requirements of the code. The federal code requires a home be built on a steel chassis that is an integral part of the home. Modular or prefabricated homes are built to the International Residential Code, (IRC), which is also a part of the State Building Code required for residential zoning. Modular or prefabricated homes are built on a removable steel frame that does not stay permanently a part of the home. Modular homes are then placed on a foundation such as a basement or crawlspace. Manufactured homes are predominantly single-story and are delivered to the home site in one, two or three sections. Flooring, cabinetry, fixtures, appliances and plumbing have been installed at the factory. If the home has multiple sections, the sections are joined at the site, with minimal finishing work completed by a licensed installer. Modular or prefabricated homes can be one or two-stories in height and are delivered to the home site in one or more sections. While some of the modular home’s interior work is accomplished at the factory, much more of the finishing work is completed at the home site when compared to a manufactured home. The interior amenities installed in a modular home on site are inspected by the local building official or compliance with the code.

A SMALL BUT SOCIAL SPOT:

Trends in front-porch decorating

By KIM COOK Associated Press

Back in the days before TV and air conditioning lured people indoors, Americans often hung out on front porches, enjoying the fresh air and socializing with neighbors. In later decades, when they wanted to relax outside, people tended to do it in the backyard, away from noise and traffic. But according to the National Association of Home Builders, the front porch is coming back. On renovation projects, the association says, adding or enclosing a porch is among the most common requests. In a 2016 survey, the group found that front porches were included in about 65 percent of new home builds, up from about 40 percent 20 years earlier. So what are some decor options for this small but social spot? "Comfortable seating is an important part of any front porch," says Jenny Reimold of the Nashville, Tennessee-based design firm Whim & Willow, and a style expert for the retailer HomeGoods. She suggests a traditional outdoor bench or classic Adirondack chairs in a fun color like teal. Place a rug to anchor the seating area and provide comfort underfoot, she says. "The rug should be roughly 2 feet wider than your seating arrangement."

A rug is also a good way to bring more pattern and color to the porch, when you may not have much room for decorative elements. No matter how much space you've got to work with, try to coordinate front-porch decor with your interiors for a cohesive look indoors and out. Retailers are offering lots of options. For example, if your style is contemporary, Target 's neutral-hued Project 62 abstract outdoor rugs, lumbar pillows, club chairs and string lights would blend nicely. The new line, which includes indoor dĂŠcor, was inspired by Target's year of inception, 1962. Also at Target, the rustic farmhouse vibe, currently popular indoors, can be brought to the porch. Galvanized steel pots can hold real or faux greenery. Smith & Hawken's Montpelier collection provides deep, comfy Sunbrella cushions in chunky, whitewashed, eucalyptus-wood frames. Or for narrower porches, Opalhouse's outdoor wicker chairs may be worth a look. Those who live near water might like the crisp coastal vibe of all-weather wicker seating in creamy white with blue cushions, tied in with starfish, stripe or lattice patterned outdoor rug,

and navy ceramic planters. And for boho decor fans, there are patterned terracotta planters, folk-arty floral rugs, fruity-hued and fringed toss pillows, and woven furniture. Want a swinging seat, but don't have a beam to hang it from? Consider Casaza's freestanding swing chair, with

a sturdy powder-coated frame holding an all-weather rattan seat with a plush cushion. Also here, a selection of ceramic or cement stools with unusual painted or textured finishes. If you have no electrical outlet handy, you can still illuminate your front-porch seating area with batterypowered or solar lighting. IKEA 's new Solvinden solar collection includes string lights as well as table and floor lights, with beachy stripe or polka-dot patterns. "Outdoor lanterns are essential elements for any outdoor space because they're not only functional but versatile," says Reimold. "They can be used with a variety of home styles, from coastal to farmhouse to traditional. Lanterns also transition well from summer to fall, making them a great purchase for year-round decorating." You'll find whitewashed wood ones at HomeGoods, and Wayfair has a broad range of metal, ceramic or wood options. Use battery-operated pillar candles that can be tapped on and off with a remote control, for safety and convenience. Terrain 's Wildfire pillar offers a realistic flickering flame, and can be handily recharged with a USB cord.

NEW YORK (AP) — Joanna Teplin and Clea Shearer of the Nashville-based company The Home Edit believe in streamlining your belongings to get organized, but they say it isn't realistic to expect people to pitch so much of their stuff. "We definitely are more lenient in purging than Marie Kondo's method," said Shearer, referring to the author of the best-selling book "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing." Kondo also has her own series on Netflix, "Tidying Up with Marie Kondo," and has sparked the verb "Kondo-ing," meaning purging anything that doesn't "spark joy." "In our consumer-driven culture, we do understand people are going to own a few more things than she would suggest," said Shearer. "We just try and coach (clients) to think through it." The questions they ask are: Do you love it, do you use it, or is it special? "A plunger brings nobody any joy, but you must own one," added Shearer. "People sometimes get so excited they cleaned out everything and now they're left with three tank tops and a pair of leggings." Teplin and Shearer are sharing their philosophy in the New York Times best-selling book "The Home Edit: a Guide to Organizing and

Realizing Your House Goals." "To hire us is a luxury service just like hiring a personal trainer," said Shearer. "Our book allows our way to be accessible for people who want to do it themselves." In this interview with The Associated Press, lightly edited for length and clarity, they talk more about their technique, celeb clientele and more. AP: Your Instagram and book show you using multiple containers — like baskets or bins — that look the same. What do you think about organizational hacks like using empty tissue boxes or toilet paper rolls to bunch items together? SHEARER: That's just not who we are. I totally respect if people want to do that. ... We pick items that look beautiful. While I know people want to reuse an empty shoe box, it's just not our thing. TEPLIN: Uniformity of product is so important to us. To make it look a certain way, it's important to keep the uniform. If you have one basket that looks one way and another one that looks totally different and another one off over here, you lose that aesthetic that is so pleasing to the eye. AP: What's your advice for people who have collections? SHEARER: We love to honor a collection. If someone really loves something, we will find a way to highlight it and

https://start.att.net/exclusive/ hello-sunshine/master-themess make something that they are happy to look at. We'll say, is this a collection because you love it, or do you get a souvenir cup every time you go to the zoo? Let's dig a little bit deeper and figure out what we're working with. TEPLIN: There are things that people have accidentally collected that can be paired down. AP: What about keeping track of your kids' artwork? SHEARER: What I do is each kid has a sentimental box throughout the school year or calendar year. When schoolwork comes home, you slip it into the box. At the end of the year, you go through it and weed out what you don't want. You don't know what you need to keep until you look back with some perspective, so you kind of put it in a holding pattern. AP: You've organized for celebrities including Christina Applegate, Tiffani

Thiessen, Gwyneth Paltrow and Khloe Kardashian. Please say celebrities are like regular people who have messy closets. SHEARER: We've never walked into a home and said, "We're not needed here." Well, Khloe Kardashian's was pretty close. TEPLIN: It really isn't organizing for her. It's more like a collaboration. She's like 99.9% there. If she wasn't busy, we would love to have her work for us. SHEARER: We've done her pantry, her kitchen, her laundry room, her home office. We just adore her. She gets us in a way that no one really does. AP: Reese Witherspoon produces a show with you both for DirecTV called "Master the Mess." How did that come about? SHEARER: Reese found us on Instagram and her company, Hello Sunshine, DM'd us. ... I remember the moment. They said, "Reese suggested we reach out" and I pulled my car over to the side of the road and I said, "I need you to repeat that." AP: Have you organized for her? SHEARER: No! We have offered so many times. I feel like she feels bad like she doesn't want to take advantage. I'm like, "Let us in! Let us into your messiest space!" I think she's saving it for the TV cameras.

Pergolas: Ancient garden structures are getting updated

By DEAN FOSDICK Associated Press

Pergolas have been part of home gardens for a long time, but they're getting some modern upgrades because of trends toward backyard sanctuaries and entertaining. Historically, pergolas were simple, overhead structures used to protect garden walkways. They were characterized by long linear shapes, said Gail Hansen, an associate professor and Extension specialist in landscape design with the University of Florida. Today, pergolas are customized for use covering outdoor patios and elaborate entertainment areas. "Many homeowners like to spend more time outdoors, and the relaxed ease of outdoor entertaining is more suited to our lifestyle and less formal entertainment activities," Hansen said. Backyard pergolas are usually attached to houses or, if they're freestanding, are near indoor kitchens for easy access, she said. "Homeowners are updating their outdoor entertainment areas with fully appointed kitchens and luxurious patio furniture," Hansen said. "In addition to the traditional gas grill, nearly every kitchen appliance has been modified for outdoor use," including sinks, refrigerators, wine coolers, griddles, ice makers, pizza ovens and warming drawers, she said. "Stainless steel is the preferred material." Pergolas sometimes are confused with arbors, which often are arch-shaped, with a continuous run of latticework from side to side, said Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the National Association of Landscape Professionals. "Traditionally, arbors shade gates, walkways or a bench, are only a few feet wide and provide the perfect support for climb-

14 HOME MARKET May 2019

ing plants," she said. Both landscape-design structures support climbing plants, she said, but pergolas are more elaborate and help shade entire outdoor spaces. When designed and oriented correctly, a pergola can cast enough shade to make even a hot afternoon enjoyable, or if homeowners need additional protection from the elements, they can install a retractable shade, Henriksen said. "The increase we are seeing in homeowners' requests for pergolas is another example of how people are investing in their outdoor living spaces to create 'staycation sanctuaries,' add sizzle to outdoor entertaining and personalize their individual home environments," she said. You can tailor your pergola with everything from chandeliers and ceiling fans to strings of lights, fabric, space heaters and sound systems. "Add color and excitement to an outdoor space with thriller, filler and spiller container gardens," Henriksen said. "With the perfect planting combination and unique container, homeowners can add rich color and texture to a stunning pergola." Landscape professionals can help you understand the pros and cons of different materials used for pergolas. Options include pressure-treated woods, cedar wood, vinyl and fiberglass, Henriksen said. Pressure-treated wood generally looks best if it's painted or stained, she said. Cedar is insect-resistant and looks great right from the sawmill. "You can leave it untreated to turn a soft silver gray, or stain and seal it to hold its color," she said. Vinyl requires little maintenance while fiberglass can be painted, spans longer distances without posts and, due to its light weight, doesn't require the same deep footers that other materials dictate, Henriksen said.
