The White Company's

monochrome aesthetic

comes to the US By KATHERINE ROTH Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Sometimes dubbed a British Martha Stewart, Chrissie Rucker — with her own home goods empire and cultish following — has brought her monochrome aesthetic to Fifth Avenue. She is opening The White Company stores in the United States (another store is slated to open in November in Short Hills, New Jersey) after the success of a U.S.focused online store. She offers clothes, home decor and other items mostly in shades of white. See WHITE — Page 6

wanted to emulate simplicity and quality, and decided white had to be the best way to achieve this.

Continued from Page 5

"What started out as a mail order enterprise in my boyfriend's bedroom over 20 years ago now encompasses over 50 U.K. stores and a flagship store on U.S. soil," Rucker says. She credits simple, high-quality products "and staying true to this timeless and versatile color." Does Rucker, one of Britain's wealthiest self-made businesswomen, ever tire of shades of white, beige and ivory? "Never." Excerpts from her interview with The Associated Press, lightly edited for length and clarity:

AP: What's special about home goods and clothes in white? Rucker: No matter who you are, where you live or whatever your style, there is a place in everyone's life for white. The beauty of this simple color is that it works with anything you already own. AP: How did you get the idea for The White Company? Rucker: It turned out that sourcing white towels, white bed linen, white china and white napkins was harder than I had anticipated. At one end, the homewares seemed cheaply manufactured and of poor quality, whilst at the higher end, offerings were completely unaffordable and the shopping experience simply unenjoyable. ... My mission with The White Company was to offer first-class designer quality, but at affordable, high-street prices.

AP: How and when did you happen upon white for home decor, clothing and other goods, and why has that one color translated into so much? Rucker: Back in 1993, in an attempt to impress my boyfriend (now husband) of my potential marital qualities, I set about the task of AP: Please describe the aesthetic in transforming his new home. My your stores? choice in color initially stemmed from a lack of confidence — I knew I See WHITE — Page 8

Make a confident offer.

Rucker: Simplicity and elegance amidst a cloud of calming aromas. AP: Why the U.S.? What makes The White Company different from other American retailers? Rucker: The great thing about having already set up a U.S. website is that we have all our customer data, and therefore we already know where our customers are. There are lots of similarities in buying patterns between Londoners and New Yorkers, so we were pretty sure it was the right time to launch our first store in the United States. It also helps that I can leverage (the experience of) my husband, Nick Wheeler, who also took his British company, Charles Tyrwhitt, to the U.S. I have some inside tips!

Get pre-qualified! See Us First

A mortgage loan pre-qualification is simply an estimate of how much house you can afford. It’s an easy process, and we can get started with a phone call or short visit. The best time to get pre-qualified is before you even start looking for a home. Knowing what you can afford is extremely helpful in making a confident offer. At First International Bank & Trust there is no cost or obligation to get pre-qualified. Call us today, we’ll help prepare you for the future you’ve been dreaming of.

AP: Will product lines sold in the United States differ from those in Britain? Rucker: Our 155 candles are exclusive to the U.S. market. The store also has U.S.-specific sizes of bed linen. AP: Some have compared you to Martha Stewart. What do you think? Rucker: We have both nurtured businesses out of a passion for the home and living environment. ... For me, The White Company's evolution has mirrored my own life events — pretty yet comfortable nightdresses while I was pregnant translated into a sleepwear line, the birth of my first child translated into the launch of The Little White Company. ... Precious moments of uncomplicated happiness are our constant inspiration, and we really aim to sell a lifestyle, not simply a product. AP: Aren't you ever tempted to stray from whites, ivories and beiges? Rucker: No, never. Contrary to our name though, we do also sell shades of navy, gray, ivory and the occasional black — especially across our clothing range. We are not exclusively white, but it's the spirit and core of the company. There was an ill-judged experiment with color a few years ago — an aubergine velvet bedcover comes painfully to mind — but we quickly brought the company back to neutral. We now have very strict color rules and have regular meetings to ensure none of our items' colors are off-brand.

Room-by-Room

Small changes that add up to a big impact

RENOVATIONS

I

FAMILY FEATURES

f your favorite room is outdated and dingy, a renovation may be all you need to make the old feel new and to fall in love with your home all over again. Upgrading your home can be a big job, and unless it’s part of a premove-in plan, few homeowners find it practical (or even possible, from a budget standpoint) to execute a largescale project. However, tackling the updates one room at a time and focusing on small changes that bring big returns

can put those overdue enhancements well within reach.

Kitchen

It’s the heart of the home, and it’s where many homeowners sink big money to make upgrades. Kitchen renovations don’t have to require a second mortgage though. Re-facing rather than replacing cabinetry can bring about a whole new look for a whole lot less money. This is a good option when the existing cabinets are still in good working condition and you’re just looking for an aesthetic

10 H O M E M A R K E T OCTOBER 2017

change. Other small-scale options include swapping out the countertop and sink, changing the lighting fixtures and updating tired floors with contemporary wood or tile.

Bathroom

When plumbing is involved, project costs can skyrocket, but there are some relatively simple ways you can give your bathroom a facelift on a modest budget. For starters, swap out all the fixtures from lighting to faucets. A new vanity is another instant upgrade,

whether you opt for an updated version of the original or select a whole new style for a completely fresh look. Also consider upgrades that can increase natural light and fresh air without compromising privacy, such as the addition of skylights to your ceiling, or “fifth wall,” which can completely change the lighting dynamic of the room. In addition to balanced, natural light, skylights like those from Velux can open to help refresh your space and keep it odor- and moisture-free. For extra style and light control, consider complementing the room’s decor with skylights featuring colored blinds, which are available in more than 100 colors and styles, and also offer remote control operation for convenience in raising and lowering the blinds and opening skylights to let in fresh air. Learn more about making the fifth wall part of your renovation plan at whyskylights.com.

Living Room

A common space where the family gathers is likely to sustain the greatest wear and tear, and because you spend so much time there, it’s also a room where you’re likely to find a list of things that irk you. Creating a new color scheme is a simple fix that transforms the space, but changing the palette of the walls is just the beginning. Also consider taking your redesign to the ceiling with vibrant colors, creative wallpapers or even exposed beams. Round out the room by swapping out lamp shades, adding vibrant throw pillows, replacing old curtains or blinds, or tying the color scheme together with a new area rug.

Bedroom

In your private sanctuary, all the typical options for updates apply for sure. However, this is a space where the furnishings can be an especially impactful way to influence the ambiance, especially if a construction project in the room where you sleep is impractical. Changing out the style of the bed frame and complementary pieces creates a whole new vibe for the room. Then bring in a new collection of textiles for the bedding and drapery to help round out the pseudo-renovation.

Laundry Room

If you’re looking for modest ways to update your home, be sure to consider spaces like the laundry room. Although you likely use this space less frequently than common spaces like the living room or kitchen, plenty of essential activity happens in the laundry area. Practical features like added storage space, cheerful color on the walls and easy-to-clean flooring can all make this room’s tedious tasks more enjoyable.

Which Skylight is Right?

Skylights can serve multiple functions, both aesthetic and practical. Understanding the different types of skylights can help you choose the right fit for your home.

Fresh Air

Solar-powered skylights rely on the sun’s energy to open and bring both air and natural light into your home. Some models, such as those offered by Velux, feature a rain sensor that automatically closes the skylight at the first sign of precipitation. They’re also easy to operate with a touchscreen remote control. Electric skylights are wired into your home electrical system and open and close via a radio frequency, touch-screen remote control. Manual skylights open with a hand lever; a control rod is generally available for outof-reach installations.

Fixed

An economical choice for visually expanding areas such as hallways, stairwells and other closed-in, dark spaces, these static skylights are intended to fill a room with natural light.

Energy Performance

Adding a solar blind to a skylight results in more savings via potential tax credits as well as reduced energy usage. The blind functions to block heat penetration when closed, but during cooler weather it can stay open to allow warm, sunny rays to supplement the home’s climate control system.

Terrazzo

goes upscale

— THE STUFF OF OLD HALLWAY FLOORING —

Many of us think of terrazzo — a composite including chips of various stones and glass — as a utilitarian flooring material, something you see in lobbies or hallways. But the centuries-old material is being rediscovered by architects and designers who are adapting its distinctive patterns for all kinds of surfaces, including furniture, and other creative uses. Terrazzo was one of the first sustainably produced materials, says Venicebased interior designer and architect Elisabetta Rizzato. (www.italianbark.com ) "Craftspeople used waste materials — for instance, local Venetian stone off-cuts and chips from the construction of palazzos — to make decorative mosaic-like floors," she says. "Eventually, they began introducing glass, metals and even concrete, all while consistently using localmaterial waste." The raw materials may have had humble origins, but Rizzato says terrazzo was popular with Renaissance aristocrats.

"It was the best flooring option (for palaces) because it was flexible and could adapt to structural failures of the wooden beams," she says. Terrazzo also became the darling of midcentury architects, who appreciated its elegant minimalism. "Look at Frank Lloyd Wright's terrazzo floors in the Guggenheim Museum," says Paul Makovsky, vice president of design for the New York architecture and design magazine Metropolis. (www.metropolismag.com ) "Since it was built in 1959, over a million people walk on that floor each year, and it looks as good as new." Makovsky associates Art Deco terrazzo with "the construction of public buildings that were beautiful and meant to last. You know where you'll see surprisingly beautiful terrazzo floors? The Hoover Dam." Los Angeles architect Dan Brunn is also a fan. "Unless a client is against it, I use it," he says. "I love that it's durable and can cover interior and exterior expanses, which really helps create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection." (www.danbrunn.com ) Miami architect Michael Wolk added terrazzo-topped patio tables of his re-design of the Atlantikos restaurant at Florida's St. Regis Bal Harbor Resort. Wolk also ran terrazzo throughout a spacious, Zen-like master bath in the Palm Beach area; the material looks luxe, yet has a softer, more welcoming appearance and feel than marble. (www.wolkdesign.com ) Easy-to-use options now include precast terrazzo made with durable resins. London designer Max Lamb has created a precast terrazzo for Dzek called Marmoreal that can go on floors, walls and countertops. Colorful marble aggregate is embedded in white or black resin; the light version looks like nougat candy, while the dark one evokes a night sky. (www.dzekdzekdzek.com ) Large- and small-format slabs and tiles like Atlas Concorde's Marvel Gems collection and Ornamenta's Stile Libero come in earthy and versatile palettes that mimic traditional terrazzo mixtures. (www.atlasconcorde.com ; www.ornamenta.com ) If you want to bring terrazzo into a space on a smaller scale, there are lots of creative new options, Makovsky says. See FLOOR — Page 19

For example, he says, Los Angeles studio Besler and Sons have designed fun "Props" made of terrazzo that blend colored glass, marble chips and cement. The simple geo shapes, made with black, white and red aggregates in white or strawberry red matrix, can be used as bookends, doorstops, paperweights and serving platters. (www.beslerandsons.com ) From Brodie Neill, a London-based industrial designer, comes the kaleidoscopic blue and green Gyro table, made from what he calls "ocean terrazzo" — 70 percent recycled plastic waste from the sea. (www.brodieneill.com ) West Elm's contemporary, hexagonal cement planter with a faux-terrazzo pattern could house indoor or outdoor greenery. West Elm also carries Roar & Rabbit's curvy, terrazzo-based table lamp, and a set of brass-edged coasters. (www.westelm.com ) Deny Designs has a collection of small furniture, textiles and accents in a pattern called Sweet Terrazzo, by Emanuela Carratoni. (www.denydesigns.com ) Wallpaper and vinyl tile make affordable substitutes for the real thing, suggests Makovsky. Both www.spoonflower.com and www.muralswallpaper.com have terrazzo-patterned wall coverings. Johnsonite's Gemstone vinyl flooring collection comes in evocative hues like Sunlight, Beach Glass and Silver Moon. (www.johnsonite.com )
