A few ways to ready trees, shrubs and vines for winter Trees, shrubs and vines may need a little help getting ready for winter's frigid temperatures, but not too much. Don't prune, don't fertilize, don't water. Any of those three could awaken parts of the plants at a time when they should be shutting down. Of course, there are exceptions to this do-nothing approach. Lateseason watering is called for only if winter survival is chancy because a plant is crying out from thirst. Evergreens, especially young ones, are an exception to the no-watering rule because they have limited root systems and lose water through their leaves all winter, so they need watering during extended periods of dry weather.
PREPARING FOR OTHER WINTER HAZARDS One potential winter hazard is sunscald, which can occur when the temperature of dark-colored bark that's been heated by sunlight on a clear day plummets at sunset. More of a problem with thinbarked trees, sunscald can be avoided with white latex paint. Mixed with equal parts water, and either sprayed or painted onto tree trunks, the white latex paint reflects sunlight to keep the bark evenly cold. An organic mulch such as wood chips, straw, leaves or pine needles spread at the foot of a tree, shrub or vine is another way to help woody plants in winter. Fluffy, organic mulches insulate the soil, preventing the frequent freezing and thawing that could heave young plants, still not wellanchored in the soil, up and out of the ground. Although stems won't grow until winter is over, roots grow whenever soil temperatures are above about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Insulation provided by See TREES — Page 11

Alternatively, create your own repellent by, for example, hanging a cut bar of deodorant soap (leave the wrapper on for better longevity) on each plant, or by blending water with eggs, for aroma, and hot pep-
per, for taste, and then spraying the mixture on your plants. Electronic repellents (such as Deerchaser) can supplement these "perfumes" to keep deer at a distance. For best results, perfume woody plants before deer begin feeding and then reapply the repellent, preferably a different one each time, every few weeks until spring.
FURRY CREATURES On the downside, mulches provide mice with a cozy haven, hidden from the eyes of predators. And hungry mice can eat and damage your plants. Don't give them the convenient food, lodging and protection of mulch; leave a mulch-free ring of a few inches diameter around the base of the plant. For further protection against mice and, a little higher up, rabbits, the well-accoutered woody tree or vine will also wear something around its "ankles" for winter: A cylinder of 1/4-inch mesh hardware cloth, 2 feet high and pressed an inch into the soil to discourage burrowing, keeps these creatures at bay. Make the cylinder's diameter wide enough to allow for plant growth, and to let you reach inside to pull weeds. Ask a Designer: home splurges to treat yourself this season So many of our home-improvement and design choices are practical ones: Which sofa will stand up over the years? Which paint color matches the furniture? But what about changes that could really elevate our happiness at home? Sometimes the smallest things can make home life easier and more joyful: Interior designer Kate Jackson says that starting each day using her sterling silver spoons makes the morning feel more special for her whole family. In this season of gift-giving, we've asked Jackson and two other designers — Sarah Fishburne, director of trend and design for the Home Depot, and New York-based Danielle Colding — about home innovations and splurges that you can give yourself.
WARM FLOORS ALL WINTER Colding had a client with a large house that was often filled with friends. The kitchen was the most-used room and "he just wanted the luxury of that room feeling really good," Colding says, but "it just felt cold." So they found a creative solution: Adding a heated floor. The key to these kinds of investments, Colding says, is knowing which ones will really improve your daily life. Although expensive, a heated kitchen floor is a feature you can use every day in the fall and winter. When you get dressed, she says, "you're not rushing, going 'Where did I put this?'" And you wear more of your clothes because you can actually see them. Technology has made closet planning simpler and more fun: Home Depot and other companies offer online planning tools that let you sketch out different configurations. And the range of storage solutions and styles of closet interiors has been expanding.

Book looks at how top artists choose, display works at home NEW YORK (AP) — Imagine being invited on a house tour of the homes of 25 well-known contemporary artists, strolling around their big, airy downtown lofts and other city abodes as they take you aside and explain how they chose the artworks displayed there. The new book "Artists Living with Art" (Abrams) is that tour. The coffee-table book, photographed by Oberto Gili and written by Stacey Goergen and Amanda Benchley, with a foreword by art historian Robert Storr, includes dozens of photos and interviews with the artists, most of whom live within blocks of each other. Chuck Close, Will Cotton, Rashid Johnson, Marilyn Minter, Cindy Sherman and others discuss how they select and display the artworks decorating their homes, and their thoughts on collecting. The result is an artistic and original approach to interiors. Here, art tends to be moved frequently — often every six months — and paintings can be overlapped, often leaning casually against walls. Chinese scholars' rocks — stones naturally formed by the weather into interesting forms — and a range of handmade ceramics are featured in almost every home. And each intimate interior reflects friendships and inspirations, and includes an often-unexpected array of collections, many displayed in unusual ways. "Through looking at the things artists own and listening to their stories of what it means to them, you can learn more about their work, inspirations and relationships," explained Goergen, who previously worked in the curatorial department of the Whitney Museum of Modern Art. "In every home featured, we saw a passion for form," she said, mentioning the artists' shared interest in rock formations. "Joan Jonas collects interesting stones or rocks herself and sometimes gives them to her friends as gifts," Benchley added. Unlike professional art collectors, who might buy art as an investment or focus on a specific genre, or interior designers, who select works with an eye to decorating a space, these artists require a deeper, more personal connection for a work to gain entre.
The results can be startling, like Close's passion for Old Master canvases and drawings, sometimes alongside more contemporary masters like Roy Lichtenstein and Willem de Kooning. "If an artist's work can hold the wall with that of his heroes, he knows he's on the right track.," writes Storr in the book. The light-filled loft that Will Cotton shares with Rose Dergan, a staffer at Gagosian Gallery, features plenty of his own work. An enormous sculpture of stacked, life-size plaster cakes stands near a huge front window, not far from enormous landscape paintings featuring lollipop trees and gingerbread houses. There are portraits of beautiful women clad in marshmallows or cake, or lounging seductively on cotton-candy clouds. The loft also features works by Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and David Salle. But like many of the artists featured in this book, Cotton says he seldom buys art, and accumulated much of his collection through bartering.
