Viewing guide to the XXXI Olympic Summer Games August 3-21, 2016 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Greatest: Phelps returns for his Olympics swan song Michael Phelps is back for a sequel to his Olympic farewell. This time, he insists, it really is goodbye. After retiring and then un-retiring, Phelps will be in Rio as the first U.S. male swimmer to compete in five Olympics. He is already the most decorated athlete in the history of the games, with 18 golds and 22 medals overall, and at age 31 remains the biggest star in a sport that will also feature teen sensation Katie Ledecky and an increasingly diverse pool of potential champions from around the world. Look for Phelps to add significantly to his medal total. He qualified for his three best individual events and will likely be part of all three men’s relays on the powerful U.S. team. Just don’t expect another comeback. “This is it,” Phelps said. “No more.” Sure about that? “I’m done,” he reiterated. “The body is done. This is my last one.” Phelps initially retired after the London Games, only to backtrack on that decision about 18 months later. Looking back to four years ago, Phelps said he didn’t really want to be at the Olympics and wasn’t in top condition, even though he was still good enough to capture four golds and two silvers. He came back with a rekindled passion for swimming, only to run into another major challenge when he was arrested for the second time on drunken driving charges. That led Phelps to completely overhaul his personal life. He went into therapy, gave up alcohol, got engaged, made peace with his estranged father and, in the biggest change of all, became a father for the first time when son Boomer was born in May.

In this July 28, 2012 photo, Michael Phelps competes in a heat of the men’s 400-meter individual medley at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

No matter what happens in Rio, this is how he really wants to go out. Here are some other things to watch at the swimming competition in Rio, which includes open water and the synchronized events: THE KATIE SHOW: Ledecky has gone from a surprise gold medalist in London to one of the world’s most dominant swimmers at age 19. She is the world-record holder and huge favorite in both the 400- and 800meter freestyle, and could bring home another gold in the 200 free. In addition, she will anchor the 4x200 free relay for the Americans, making them the team to beat. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

In this Aug. 8, 2015 photo, Katie Ledecky, of the United States, celebrates after winning the women’s 800m freestyle final at the Swimming World Championships in Kazan, Russia. NOT SO BUSY: Missy Franklin was one of the big stars in London, winning four golds and a bronze while competing in seven events. The 21-year-old American will have a lot more free time on her hands this time after a disappointing performance at the U.S. trials. Franklin qualified for only two individual events and her relay duties will be limited to the 4x200 freestyle. It’s a similar story for another U.S. great, Ryan Lochte. The 11-time Olympic medalist sustained a groin injury on the first day of the U.S. trials and managed to qualify for only one individual race — a far cry from the six events (four individual, two relays) he had in London. LATE NIGHTS: For the second time in three Olympics, the schedule has been altered so the swimming events can be televised live in the U.S. during prime time. The change isn’t quite as drastic as eight years ago in Beijing, when preliminaries were held in the evening and the finals the following morning. In Rio, the prelims have been moved back to 1 p.m.

local time, while the finals won’t begin until 10 p.m. — both about three hours later than most meets. DIRTY WATER: The 10-kilometer open water races, a part of the Olympics since 2008, will be held against the gorgeous backdrop of Copacabana. The state of the water is not so pretty. There are major health concerns after Brazilian officials failed to live up to their pledge to clean up an ocean contaminated with raw sewage and potentially dangerous bacteria. RUSSIANS IN SYNC: Russia’s the favorite in synchronized swimming, a sport known for hair gel, nose plugs, garish suits and dazzling showmanship. The Russians have not been beaten at the Olympics since 1996, and their only loss at the last three world championships came in a mixed-gender event that is not part of the Rio program. But if Russia is ultimately banned from the games because of widespread doping, the podium might look much different this time around. Story and photos by Associated Press

MAKE SOME NOISE! Weightlifters bring unique sounds to the games Weightlifting is more grit than glamour. Athletes grunt, yell and do whatever it takes to prepare themselves to lift heavy weight on the world’s biggest stage. Sometimes their adrenaline-fueled screams are louder than the sound of the barbell slamming onto the platform. Leave the silence for other sports. Weightlifting is one of the oldest sports in the Olympics and while it’s one of the lesser knowns, it’s quite a crowd pleaser. Just listen to the way spectators react when an athlete stomps their feet and shouts before a lift. Competition starts Aug. 6 in Rio de Janeiro. Here are some things to know: THE RULES: Weightlifters get three attempts in each of the two types of lift. In the snatch, the bar is lifted overhead in one continuous motion. The clean and jerk is performed in two moves: the lifter first pulls the bar to shoulder height while in a squat, then rises and pushes it overhead. The elbows need to lock for a successful lift. The total score combines the weights lifted in the best snatch and the best clean and jerk.

Each athlete only gets six lifts, so picking the right weights is crucial. If they start too low, medals could be out of reach. If they start too high, they may crash out without a result. TEAM USA: Morghan King, Jenny Arthur, Sarah Robles and Kendrick Farris will represent the United States. Robles finished seventh in 2012 in the super heavyweight class. Arthur was the first American to qualify and will compete as a heavyweight. King (48 kg) is also making her Olympic debut. Farris, the only men’s representative, finished eighth in 2008 and 10th in 2012. DOPING SUSPENSIONS: Bulgaria’s team was barred from the Olympics after 11 of its lifters received doping bans last year. Yulia Kalina, a Ukrainian bronze winner in the women’s 58-kilogram division, was the first athlete disqualified. Four Olympic gold medalists from Kazakhstan and medalists from Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Belarus have already been provisionally suspended by the International Weightlifting Federation. U.S. women looking to win sixth consecutive basketball gold medal No team has been more dominant at the Olympics over the past 20 years then the U.S. women’s basketball team, winning five straight gold medals. They’ll try and keep that streak going in Rio. “Training time is always our biggest challenge,” said three-time gold medalist Sue Bird. “When you get to the medal rounds it’s one and done, but we have a lot of experience in those games and look to continue our recent success.” The Americans have won 41 consecutive Olympic contests dating back to the bronze medal game in 1992, winning by an average of nearly 30 points a game. With nine players, including Bird, Diana Taurasi and Tamika Catchings, returning from the London Games, the U.S. is a heavy favorite to win another gold medal. Olympic newcomers Elena Delle Donne, Brittney Griner and Breanna Stewart will add a dynamic mix to the veteran core. The only potential thorn for the U.S. is lack of training time. While most other countries get to spend months together preparing, the U.S. will get about two weeks before its first game. “I’m hoping that they remember some of the stuff that we did last year at the World Championship

and a couple years ago at the Olympics and maybe February at that little training camp that we had,” U.S. coach Geno Auriemma said. “Fortunately, they’re a lot of the same players that played. So we haven’t changed a whole lot. But there’s not much time and there’s not much that you can do to get ready. You just have to trust that they’re ... They never let you down. They always seem to respond when you need them to.” The U.S. is in a difficult group with Serbia, China, Canada, Spain and Senegal. “Obviously we’re in a tough group,” Auriemma added. “Because anytime you have the European champions like Serbia already in the group and Canada, the Americas champion, those are two really good teams. And then you add in China and Spain.” Here are a few other things to watch for in women’s basketball at the Olympics: If the U.S. does win another gold, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Tamika Catchings will join Teresa Edwards and Lisa Leslie as the only basketball players to win four gold medals. Story and photo by Associated Press In this March 9 photo, Olympic basketball player Tamika Catchings poses for photos at the 2016 Team USA Media Summit in Beverly Hills, Calif.

In this June 27 photo, the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team poses for a photo right, during a news conference in New York.

Team USA not as strong, but A weakened U.S. basketball team believes it’s still the strongest one in the Olympics. LeBron James, Stephen Curry and enough stars to fill an All-NBA team passed on playing, leaving the Americans with a roster that falls short against the Dream Team comparisons they always face. But the U.S. doesn’t need to beat the Dream Team, or to be one. It just has to be the best in Brazil. “I respect the guys that declined the opportunity, but I think we still have a great team here, a lot of talent,” center DeMarcus Cousins said. “We still have the same goal in mind, winning the gold medal.” The Americans remain favored to do that, which would give them three in a row. Some things to watch as they try: THE U.S. ROSTER: While they’re not the Dream Team, the U.S. squad in Rio is still an impressive group of players. The team includes: Golden State’s Kevin

Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green; New York’s Carmelo Anthony; Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving; Toronto’s Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan; Indiana’s Paul George; Dallas’ Harrison Barnes; Chicago’s Jimmy Butler; Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins and the Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan. THE FORMAT: Two six-team groups. Each team faces the others in its pool, and the top four teams in each advance to the quarterfinals. Group A features the U.S., Serbia, France, China, Australia, and Venezuela. Group B is Spain, Lithuania, Brazil, Argentina, Croatia and Nigeria. WHICH GROUP IS TOUGHER? Group A is more top-heavy, with the U.S., Serbia and France finishing 1-2-3 in the Basketball World Cup two years ago. But Group B appears to be deeper, with Spain (No. 2), Lithuania (3), Argentina (4), Brazil (9) and Croatia (12) all among the top dozen ranked teams in the world. GRAB A SEAT, THIS WILL BE A

still the squad to beat in Rio WHILE: The Olympic basketball tournament runs nearly the entire length of the Games, making the first round of the NBA playoffs seem speedy. Competition begins Aug. 6, the day after the opening ceremony, and the medal games are Aug. 21, the day of the closing ceremony. ROLLING INTO RIO: The U.S. has won 63 straight games, 45 in FIBA competitions and 18 in exhibition play. CAPTAIN AMERICA: Carmelo Anthony will become the first U.S. men’s player to appear in four Olympics, and become the most decorated men’s basketball Olympian ever if the U.S. wins a medal. He has a bronze from 2004 and golds in Beijing and London. THIRD TIME THE CHARM? Spain sure hopes this is the year it can break through, after pushing the U.S. deep into the final minutes of the last two goldmedal games. The Americans emerged with a 118-107 victory in 2008 and held on to win 107-100 in London. The Spanish bring back veterans such as Pau

Gasol, Jose Calderon and Juan Carlos Navarro for a final shot. GOODBYE, GOLDEN GENERATION: This certainly seems like the end for Argentina’s greats, who won gold in 2004, bronze in 2008 and narrowly missed another medal when they finished fourth in 2012. Manu Ginobili, Luis Scola and Andres Nocioni are back, with Scola chosen as Argentina’s flag bearer. BEST FIRST-ROUND DAY: Group B has some intriguing games on Aug. 13. Spain meets Lithuania in a rematch of the 2015 EuroBasket championship game, and Brazil and Argentina renew a fierce rivalry that’s seen one knock the other out of the last three major international tournaments. Argentina eliminated Brazil in the 2010 world championship and 2012 Olympics, while the Brazilians — coached by Ruben Magnano, who led Argentina to its 2004 gold ? ended the Argentinians’ stay in the 2014 Basketball World Cup. Croatia and Nigeria meet in the nightcap. Story and photo by Associated Press

Golf returns to the Olympics without its best competitors A year away from golf’s return to the Olympics after a 112-year absence, IOC President Thomas Bach said it would be good if the sport had a wide range of players from as many countries as possible competing for medals. And that’s what it delivered — 41 countries in the men’s and women’s competition — an example of golf’s global appeal. But the story of celebrated return has become more about who’s not playing. Jordan Spieth will be watching from home, still wondering if he should have set aside his personal concerns and gone to Rio de Janeiro. Rory McIlroy said he won’t be watching at all, citing the Zika virus and then taking a swipe at golf as an Olympic sport by saying he would watch “the sports that matter.” Of eligible players, 21 men said they would not be going, nearly half of them citing concerns about Zika. The women have carried the torch for golf, with only one player declining to go because of the mosquitoborne virus that has been linked to birth defects. Stacy Lewis has questioned whether the men make too much money to care about the Olympics. She is getting married in the fall, and hearing so many men cite Zika because they plan to start families caused her to probe deeper into the threat. “I talked to a lot of different people and basically went into the conversation thinking in my head, ‘OK, give me a reason why I shouldn’t go.’ And none of those people ever gave me a reason why I should not go,” Lewis said. “I want to be a part of the Olympics,” she said. .”I think the

Olympics are bigger than any golf tournament on the planet. It’s bigger than the Masters. It’s bigger than the U.S. Open. It’s bigger than the Women’s Open. It’s the biggest thing out there, and I want to be a part of that.” None of the top four in men’s golf will be part of the Rio Games. The men will have only eight of the top 20 in the world, including Masters champion Danny Willett of England and British Open champion Henrik Stenson of Sweden. The women will have nine of 10, only because South Korea has five players in the top 10 and countries only are allowed to send four. The men’s competition is Aug. 1114, followed by the women on Aug. 17-20. Regardless of who plays, medals will be distributed to a golfer for the first time since George Lyon of Canada won the gold in St. Louis against a 77-man field — three Canadians, 74 Americans. Viewing guide to the XXXI Olympic Summer Games August 3-21, 2016 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The ‘Big 4’ of men’s tennis care about chasing gold The “Big 4” of men’s tennis is enthusiastic about the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, unlike their counterparts in golf. Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal all have participated in the Summer Games in the past, all own a medal, and all talk about that event’s importance to their sport every four years — even if it already has four Grand Slam tournaments every year. Consider what Britain’s Murray said when he was asked about Brazil the day after winning Wimbledon for the second time. “I’ve loved being in the two Olympics that I’ve been at,” said the No. 2-ranked Murray, who won a gold in singles at the 2012 London Games. “Rio is obviously a big, big goal of mine, and hopefully I can perform well there.” The No. 1-ranked Djokovic won a singles bronze for Serbia at the 2008 Beijing Games, then came up just short of a medal four years ago. No. 3 Federer won a gold for Switzerland in doubles with Stan Wawrinka eight years ago, and a silver in singles four years ago. No. 4 Nadal won a singles gold for Spain in Beijing, missed London because he was hurt, and appealed to the International Tennis Federation to allow him to compete in Rio after he failed to fulfill Davis Cup commitments because of injuries. Even if this quartet owns a combined 46 Grand Slam titles, the Olympics still matter to them. Much will be made of the contrast between this group’s interest in the Summer Games and what happened in golf, which will be missing Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy in Rio. WHO’S MISSING: There are some

noteworthy players who won’t be there: seven of the top 20 men in the July 11 ATP rankings. That includes Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic of Canada; Czech Wimbledon semifinalist Tomas Berdych; the top American man, John Isner; Australia’s best two tennis players, Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic; and Dominic Thiem, who would have given Austria a chance at a medal. AGE IS JUST A NUMBER: If 34year-old Serena Williams or 36-year-old Venus Williams wins a gold medal, either would be the third-oldest woman to collect an Olympic title in tennis. Winifred McNair was 43 when she won women’s doubles for Britain all the way back in 1920, and Hazel Wightman was 37 when she won the same event for the U.S. four years later. Each Williams already owns four medals (all gold), so adding two more — they’re both entered in singles and doubles — would put either in first place for most tennis medals in Olympic history. Kathleen McKane won five medals (one gold) in the 1920s. Story and photo by Associated Press

No headgear, new scoring: Trio of pros to fight in Rio After 112 years of amateur competition, professional boxers are fighting in the Olympics. All three of them. The International Boxing Association’s high-profile scheme to entice prominent pros to compete in Rio de Janeiro hasn’t worked. Instead of the star-studded tournament many apparently wanted, only a trio of traditional pros accepted the offer to fight for gold medals in Brazil. Only hardcore boxing fans have ever heard of them: Cameroon’s Hassan N’Dam, Thailand’s Amnat Ruenroeng and Italy’s Carmine Tommasone. The Rio tournament will be more notable for what the men aren’t wearing. AIBA is removing headguards for male Olympic fighters for the first time since 1980. The real stars again could be the women, who are back for their second Olympics after providing the best moments in London. REIGNING CHAMPS: All three gold medal winners from the inaugural women’s boxing tournament in London are back to attempt to defend their titles. Britain’s Nicola Adams, Ireland’s Katie Taylor and American middleweight Claressa Shields all stuck with their sport, which has grown rapidly in prominence and quality since women’s boxing was added to the Olympic program. In fact, only the dominant Shields is a strong favorite to repeat, given the improved competition at flyweight and lightweight. CAN YOU SEE ME: AIBA announced its plan to remove Olympic headgear from the men three years ago, citing research claiming the bulky pads actually cause more concussions than they prevent. The quality of their science is considered dubious by many, but

In this Aug. 8, 2012 photo, Ireland’s Katie Taylor, left, fights Tajikistan’s Mavzuna Chorieva in a lightweight 60-kg semifinal boxing match at the 2012 Summer Olympics, in London. many fighters prefer to compete without the gear, and the sport is undeniably more telegenic when fans can see the fighters’ faces. UNKINDEST CUT: The biggest problem with the headgear removal is likely to be cuts, which will develop more frequently without the facial protection. Qualifying tournaments have been filled with fighters unable to continue to their next bout after getting cut, and Olympic stars seem likely to meet the same fate. YOUNG AMERICANS: The U.S. team is the historic leader in total Olympic boxing medals and golds, but the Americans are sending just eight fighters to Rio after four men and one woman failed to secure spots through qualifying tournaments. The team might be small, but Shields and lightweight Mikaela Mayer are both medal contenders. The U.S. men didn’t win a single medal in London, but touted bantamweight Shakur Stevenson has a great shot to end that drought in Rio. Story and photo by Associated Press

U.S. women looking for gold, bring drama to pitch With a labor dispute simmering at home, the U.S. women’s national soccer team travels to Rio de Janeiro as the favorite to win its fourth straight Olympic gold medal. The Rio Games approach as a U.S. federal agency looks at a wage discrimination complaint filed by a group of national team players who claim they make less money than their male counterparts. The team’s union also is looking for a new contract with U.S. Soccer. Intrigue is nothing new for the topranked Americans. Unlike the men’s tournament, which requires teams to field under-23 squads, women’s Olympic soccer brings together the best players in the world. Seeking to clinch its fifth gold medal since women’s soccer became an Olympic sport in 1996, the U.S. makes its debut against New Zealand on Aug. 3 — two days before the opening ceremony in Rio. That’ll be followed by games against powerhouse France and Colombia in Group G. Second-ranked Germany, fifth-ranked Australia, sixth-ranked Sweden and host Brazil loom as quarterfinal opponents. The tournament will be played in seven venues across Brazil, including the jungle city of Manaus, in the Amazon rainforest, where the U.S. faces Colombia on Aug. 9. Last year, U.S. players led a protest against the artificial turf used in the World Cup in Canada before winning their third tittle in the tournament. Now, probably the main concern before Rio is the status of reigning FIFA Player of the Year Carli Lloyd’s injured right knee. Lloyd, who wowed fans with three goals in 16 minutes in the 5-2 win over Japan in July’s World Cup final, sprained her MCL in an April game with her club team, the Houston Dash. Her expected recovery time was three to six weeks, and

In this Feb. 10 photo, United States’ Carli Lloyd takes a shot at the Costa Rica goal during a CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament soccer match in Frisco, Texas.

the striker has said she will be ready to play for her third gold medal. Lloyd also scored the deciding goals in the gold medal matches in both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. ANOTHER KEY INJURY: While Lloyd likely will play in Brazil, the status of midfielder Megan Rapinoe is far less certain. The winger tore her right ACL during a training session in Hawaii before a scheduled World Cup victory tour match last year (the match was ultimately canceled because of poor artificial turf conditions). The injury required her third ACL surgery, and there has been no timeline for her return. On her blog, the 30-year-old Rapinoe wrote on June 9: “My Olympic dream is still alive! This blonde ain’t gone!” Story and photo by Associated Press

Paddle up: Rafting in Rio Whitewater churns into foam as double-ended paddles windmill one-person boats into position. The paddles go up in the air as the boats slide through red or green gates, then the furious wind milling begins again. For a sport that doesn’t get the attention of some of the more well-known ones, whitewater canoe and kayak has plenty of action and drama. THE LOWDOWN: The four canoe/kayak slalom events will be held Aug. 7-11, with medals award the final three days. Men compete in single and double canoe, along with kayak. Women compete in kayak only. The races will take place at the Whitewater Stadium in Deodoro on a steep 250-meter course that has between 18 and 25 gates. Green gates are negotiated with the current, red against it. Paddlers are assessed a twosecond penalty for hitting a gate and 50 seconds for missing one completely. EUROPEAN DOMINANCE: European countries have dominated the sport since its inception at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and show no signs of letting loose of their stranglehold. In men’s canoe slalom (C1), European counties have won every medal but one since the 1992 Barcelona Games, when the sport was put back into the Olympic program after a 20-year absence. Europe has accounted for all but one medal in kayak (K1) and 16 of 18 medals in twoperson canoe (C2) during that span. Women have had a little better chance breaking through the European stronghold, with paddlers from the U.S. and Australia combining for six of the 18 medals since Barcelona. AMERICAN MEN: The United States team has two paddlers with solid chances to earn medals in Rio. Kayaker Michal Smolen, who emigrated from Poland as a child, was unable to compete at the 2012 London Games due to questions about his citizenship, but should make a strong run to the podium this

In this April 8 photo, Michal Smolen paddles toward the finish line during the first day of the 2016 Slalom Olympic Team Trials for canoe and kayak in Charlotte, N.C.

time around. Smolen earned bronze at the 2015 world championships and has times that compare to the best paddlers in the world. Not bad for someone who was terrified of the water when he first started kayaking at 8. Canoeist Casey Eichfield will be competing in his third straight Olympics and will try to pull off a double, competing in C1 and C2 with Devin McEwan. Eichfield finished fourth at world championships and was in the top 15 his previous two Olympics. NEE’S RELIEF: Women’s kayaker Ashley Nee had a rough road to her first Olympics. She qualified for the 2008 Beijing Games, but injured a shoulder during a test event and wasn’t able to completely recover in time for the Olympic trials, finishing fourth. Nee had enough points to qualify for the 2012 London Games, but was edged out by Caroline Queen on a tiebreaker. Nee won the Olympic trials this May, yet still didn’t have a spot secured; she had to await a decision by the International Canoe Federation to award the United States an additional athlete quota spot. Now at 27, she’s headed to her first Olympics. Story and photo by Associated Press

Expect the unexpected in Olympic judo competition When the judo events kick off at the Rio de Janeiro games, the home team will send out a defending Olympic champion on the first day of competition. With five other top-ranked judoka on its Olympic team, Brazil has a particularly strong home advantage. Although judo has traditionally been dominated by the Japanese, who created the modern martial art, the combat sport has become truly universal. That means the Japanese team, which won only a single gold medal at London in its worst-ever Olympic showing — is no longer the favorite. Marius Vizer, president of the International Judo Federation, said he expects to see more unexpected winners at Rio. “I think Mongolia will be the big surprise of the Olympic games,” he said. Vizer also noted strong fighters from the U.S., Greece, Georgia, France, Russia, Cuba and South Korea. There will also be two refugee competitors, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, competing under the International Olympic Committee flag. Vizer said some rule changes to judo — including the outlawing of leg grabs — were made to distinguish the sport from others like wrestling and will hopefully inspire more fighters to attempt the big throws judo is known for. Fights can be won instantly if judoka flip their opponents flat on their back “with considerable force and speed.” While some have criticized the rule changes arguing that they favor the Japanese style of judo, which focuses on throws rather than the groundwork component of judo, Vizer said the tweaks are necessary to modernize the sport. Countries with a strong wrestling tradition, such as those in Eastern Europe and Brazil, have typically produced judo

fighters who win once judo fighters end up on the ground. That’s when competitors struggle to either pin their opponents for 20 seconds or force them to tap out by applying a stranglehold or an armbar, a move where the limb is hyperextended to the point it might break. BEST RIVALRY: After becoming the first American to win a judo gold medal, Kayla Harrison will be looking to defend her title in Rio. Her biggest roadblock might be longtime rival Brazilian Mayra Aguiar, who defeated Harrison at a Paris competition earlier this year with a match-ending throw. The two have now fought 16 times — and split the victories evenly. At a world cup final in Sao Paolo several years ago where Harrison won over Aguiar on penalties, she was booed by the local crowd.
