BEST BEST MORTGAGE MORTGAGE COMPANY COMPANY It’s not every day your financial institution is named “best mortgage company” by readers of The Minot Daily News, but this year it shouldn’t come as any huge surprise if you have visited or are an employee of Town & Country Credit Union in Minot. Town & Country Credit Union is a fullservice financial institution that offers checking, debit, savings and loans, according to Shannon Webster, marketing direc-
BEST BEST CREDIT CREDIT UNION UNION
tor. It is a member-owned financial institution, she added, and members have a say in how the business is run. There is a board of directors whose members are all volunteers and are elected by the membership. They set the policies and goals of the credit union. Webster said Town & Country Credit Union is big enough to help people with anything and can get good rates for their members. The loan officers work very hard
for the members, she added. The credit union currently serves more than 18,000 members, and provides a lot of home loans. “We get good feedback that the loan officers make the process easy,” Webster said. “We have great rates, too. Whenever we can save people money, we’re happy,” she continued. “Our main interest is our members. We always want to make our members’ lives better.”
Town & Country Credit Union has been open since 1939 and was founded to provide members with agricultural loans. They have 10 branches throughout Minot, Fargo, Kenmare, Ryder and Stanley. Many of the employees have been employed there for 15 to 20 years or more. “All we’re doing is serving the community and our members and that’s a great business to be in,” Webster said.

Mayer Electric, Inc. has been in business in the Minot area for the past 30 years. Mayer Electric is a family owned business founded by Rod and Clayton Mayer, and incorporated in 1985. Over the years Denise Mayer, Rod’s wife, has become part of the organization making it a woman owned business with offices in Minot and Bismarck. Mayer Electric has always been known as an electrical contractor operating in central North Dakota. Not only does Mayer excel in large contracts for commercial, industrial, government and oil field installations, they specialize
in full service for all electrical needs including residential, and restaurant equipment repair. The Mayer Electric family includes several licensed master and journeyman electricians. Recently Mayer has added Mayer Technologies to its growing list of services offered. Wayne Jenkins was hired into the Mayer family in 2012 upholding standards on those set by NICET for fire alarm design and security systems. David Mayer, Rod and Denise’s son, recently received full BICSI certification to meet the standards that are required for network and fiber infrastructure for all architect
and engineered projects, making Mayer Technologies the most diverse low voltage contractor in North Dakota. Mayer Electric is now capable of accomplishing everything from design build to full service electrical and technology installation, repair and maintenance. Mayer Electric attributes its success to its family of dedicated employees and would like to thank their customers for their fifth consecutive Reader’s Choice Award. For Mayer Electric great customer service is business as usual!

Jerome’s Collision Center is large and features an excellent staff that is very experienced and knowledgeable about collision repair. It is a unique business, said Lundeen, that is “set up for the future, poised to handle growth in the city to “60 or 70-thousand residents.” “There’s not much that comes in here that we can’t do. There really isn’t,” added Lundeen. “That something I’m proud of. Very proud of. There isn’t a place like ours in the Midwest. We’ve had folks come in from other places and they can’t believe there’s a shop like this in North Dakota. I hear that all the time.” Customers agree. That’s why Jerome’s Collision Center remains atop their category in the 2015 Minot Daily News “Reader’s Choice” awards.
collision center
“That’s important. The quality and speed with which we can do the repairs,” said Lundeen. “Four years ago, the typical job would take us anywhere from three to five days. Today it takes us two to three days. We have the space, a system and a process. How fast a vehicle gets in here and gets out is numero uno with people.” The team approach to car care has been perfected at Jerome’s. A damaged vehicle isn’t assigned to a single bodyman, but rather a team that collaborates to decide on the best approach for repairing a particular vehicle. “We’ve got six bodymen in collision and four in fleet,” explained Lundeen. “Number one, it’s a lot faster. If we get behind on a customer’s car, we switch resources and put more people on it. Quality is a given. It has to be a good job. If you just do it fast and it looks bad, you are not going to be around long.” Painting is usually the final process in vehicle collision repair, and it must be done to perfection. Jerome’s has an excellent staff of experienced painters who take a great deal of pride in the finished product. Getting paint to match is “vitally important” said Lundeen. So too is being as transparent as
possible to make sure each and every vehicle that enters the doors at Jerome’s will be repaired properly, even surpass customers’ expectations. With that in mind, Jerome’s recently added a delivery bay where customer’s can inspect and receive their repaired vehicle in climate-controlled comfort. “The delivery bay has given us the opportunity to highlight our strengths in the business. We get the opportunity to show off the quality of work that comes out of our shop,” said Jake Feil, Jerome’s Collision Center. “When we get done fixing a vehicle, we clean it. When customers get their car back it looks like it went into a detail shop.” Diversity abounds at Jerome’s. In addition to traditional collision work on today’s personal vehicles, Jerome’s does repair and refurbishing work on semi-trucks, motor homes and boats. A detail
shop changes the appearance of all types of vehicles. “Customers can have their vehicle cleaned and buffed,” said Feil. “Who better to buff and polish a car? That’s something that no other body shop in our area has.”
“
“
Customers agree, Jerome’s Collision Center can do it all and do it well. That’s a leading reason why Jerome’s has once again been selected as a “Reader’s Choice” award-winning business for 2015. By utilizing a unique team approach inside Minot’s largest and most complete collision center, and maintaining a very high quality of work, Jerome’s sets itself apart from other body shops. When a customer brings a vehicle into Jerome’s Collision Center for repairs of any type, they know they’ll be well-satisfied with the finished product. “We can take a vehicle from beginning to end without the interruption of it going elsewhere,” explained Jay Lundeen, owner/manager. “We have a fulltime mechanic on staff. Not just a mechanic, a guy with 30 years experience. That really sets us apart from other shops.” Having a mechanic in house is just one of the advantages for customers found at Jerome’s. Experienced bodymen and painters add to the many reasons why Jerome’s has maintained its lofty status among satisfied customers. Another reason is that in today’s fast paced world, Jerome’s has met the challenge.
“It’s unique not only for our community, but unique for our whole state. It really is. It’s because of the diversity of what we can do.” – Jay Lundeen, Jerome’s Collision Center

YOUR BEST INSURANCE
is your agent “Your best insurance is your agent.” That motto is something that Town & Country Insurance Agency takes to heart. It might be that very belief, in fact, that helped Town & Country Insurance win Best Insurance Agency in the 2015 Readers Choice awards. According to Brooke Norlin, office manager, said the agency offers personal and commercial insurance, but the primary focus is crop/farm insurance. The agency is also expanding into commercial insurance and has a new agent on board helping with that, she added. Town & Country Insurance Agency is located at 615 South Broadway, Suite 204. They have been in business since 2007. They started with three people and have expanded from there. The agency is based out of Minot, but there are also offices in Berthold and Fargo. Town & Country Insurance Agency strives to be the best independent insurance agency for their clients and the companies they represent. They concentrate on risk management, claims service, product knowledge and providing high quality customer service.
Town & Country Insurance Agency also works with companies that offer competitive contracts and exceptional policies, and provide a staff that is knowledgeable and experienced. Norlin said the agents’ job at Town & Country Insurance is to listen to the customers and provide them with the best possible insurance policy to suit their needs at an affordable price. “We strive to make sure people leave our office with the insurance coverage that they need,” Norlin said. “We do that by spending time with them, asking them questions and getting to know exactly what exposures they have. I think that’s what we mean when we say, ‘Your best insurance is your agent.’”

Individualized planning is key for Kelly Nehring, Raymond James Financial Services “My goal is to always put the customer first, and give them the best personalized service I can,” said Kelly Nehring, of Raymond James Financial Services, Minot. “I would like to thank my clients for their business and referrals of friends, colleagues and family. I greatly appreciate your continued trust and confidence.” Nehring, 2015 Minot Daily News Readers Choice winner for Best Financial Advisor, has been taking care of clients in the financial services industry for over 16 years. However, the North Dakota native and Minot State University graduate with a degree in finance has been interested in the field since his youth. “I have always been interested in money management and stocks,” he said. “I find great satisfaction in being able to help clients with financial planning and reaching their retirement income goals.” Nehring’s client first focus found a perfect home at Raymond James. He says that those little things set Raymond James apart in the industry and are why clients choose to do business there. A conservative, disciplined approach is key. Raymond James advisors work hard to understand each client’s specific situation. Only after that situation is fully understood does a Raymond James advisor craft a realistic plan to meet a client’s objective, evaluate an individual’s attitude regarding risk and begin to work towards goals. Raymond James advisors truly appreciate that each investor’s situation is unique – that, for example, a young family faces financial
decisions that are significantly different than those of a retired couple. Advisors get to know a client by gathering information about their current circumstances, their goals, con-
cerns and aspirations. An advisor then works with clients to create a comprehensive plan. A plan could be fairly simple – say, planning for a child’s college education. It could also
be complex, such as help with positioning and selling a business, then deploying the proceeds, together with other investable assets, to deliver desired retirement income. Or perhaps, there is a charitable trust on a client’s agenda. Specific, personalized goals call for specific, personalized plans. Once a comprehensive plan is complete, it is implemented and managed. Management is an ongoing process, Nehring said. Advisors monitor the progress of clients’ investments and suggest adjustments if necessary to a component, particularly if economic or financial circumstances warrant. “We’re different because we tailor things specifically for clients and have a hands-on planning approach, rather than a transactional one,” he said. Putting clients first is the number one priority for Kelly Nehring and for Raymond James. Client assets under Raymond James Financial Services administration reached a new record of $504.9 billion in 2015. Raymond James offers a full slate of financial services including asset management, banking services via Raymond Jams Bank, charitable giving/gifting strategies, education planning, investment and wealth management, research and analysis, tax strategies and trust services and administration. They also offer a range of investment products, including alternative investments, cash and cash alternatives, equities and related securities, fixed income, insurance and annuities, managed accounts and mutual funds.

It’s all in the family at Dakota Square Tesoro It isn’t common in Minot or in many parts of the country to find a family-owned and operated service station. These days, the overwhelming majority of such businesses are corporate owned or franchises. However, take a
family- and locally-owned service station, throw in a well-orchestrated convenience store component and then little touches such as a dedicated, long-term staff, cordial owners and an immaculate environment – and you have
something both rare and special. That’s exactly what Minot residents have in the Dakota Square Tesoro. Owned and operated by Lori and Boyd Zavalney for 21 years, the service station is a regular stop for many who live in
the area of travel along 16th Street SW. “We see a lot of long-time and regular customers,” said Lori Zavalney. “That’s one of the things I really like about this business – talking to customers who come in regularly and who we have gotten to know.” Having secured the cheeky 2015 Minot Daily News Readers Choice nod for Cleanest Gas Station Restroom, the Dakota Square Tesoro’s popularity starts with the facility itself. While the original building was built in the 1980s, it underwent a complete transformation in a 2012 remodel. “Everything was new, we extended the building 30 feet and Interiors Plus came in and did a great job of making it look great,” Zavalney said. Today, both exterior are kept in immaculate condition, which Zavalney attributes to the care of
longterm staff members. Fresh tile, coolers that look brand-new and polished glass and metal surfaces abound. And, yes, the restrooms are immaculate – the ladies’ room even regularly features fresh flowers. Of course, it isn’t just cleanliness. Zavalney, whose father owned service stations for many years, takes pride in the friendly service, well planned mini-market stock and the local nature of the business. “You don’t see a lot of locally-owned service stations,” she said. “There aren’t many of us around. The money stays in the community. The Zavalneys enthusiasm is clearly the reason for the high standards at the Dakota Square Tesoro. I really enjoy this business,” Lori Zavalney, a Minot State University graduate, said. Every day is different, which I like a lot.”

First Western Bank & Trust members are, from left to right, Rich Campbell, president and chief executive officer; Marla Gasmann, Katie Ogaard, Brenda Foster, executive vice president; Sabrina Herrmann, marketing specialist; Jason Zimmerman, Annette Kniffin and Doug Fredrich.
Hometown service at First Western Bank & Trust First Western Bank & Trust prides itself on providing its customers with friendly, hometown service. “I believe that we’re the only locally owned, hometown bank,” said Brenda Foster, executive vice president. The bank was chartered in 1964 and has been serving up smiles and coffee and cookies ever since. Its main branch is at 900 South Broadway and it has branches at 2200-15th St. SW and 2105-16th St. NW. It also has a satellite location in Eden Prairie, Minn. and a leasing agency in Eden Prairie.
The bank’s main branch is currently undergoing a renovation so that it can even better serve people who are on the go. The newly renovated bank will include a technology area with a tech wall where four televisions can display advertising messages and market information. A Noodle table in the lobby will enable bank staff to teach customers how to do online banking. A second, childsized table will be available for children to play interactive games regarding banking. Foster said she believes it’s important for kids to learn about banking from a young age. Customers can also conduct online banking
at home. Like most banks these days, customers can check their online account balances and transfer money from one account to another or pay bills. Some customers still prefer the personal touch and the bank still offers face to face contact with bank tellers too. First Western also prides itself on giving back to the community and many of its employees belong to service organizations and volunteer their services in the community. “If you have a successful community, you have a successful business,” said Foster. The bank even gives some of its employees
time off to volunteer in different efforts, said marketing specialist Sabrina Herrmann, who said employees were involved in multiple volunteer projects last year. Some employees volunteer every Friday delivering Meals on Wheels to seniors. Other volunteers teach civics to school children as part of the Junior Achievement Program. Others ring bells for the Salvation Army charitable campaign at Christmas. Not every business is willing to give employees time off to volunteer, but First Western believes it is important. “They really are wonderful about that,” said Herrmann.

Since 1940, what began as a small meat market in Edinburg, N.D.,has grown to be one of the most successful grocery store chains in the Midwest. Now in its 75th year of operation, that little store has expanded to become Johanneson’s Inc., which includes Pace Development, Marketplace Foods and other Marketplace stores. Keith Johanneson, president and CEO of Johanneson’s Inc., has played a key role in the expansion of Bemidji’s business sector over the past several decades. Johanneson said the company is hometown-based, so he is proud of the impact the company’s corporate headquarters have on Bemidji. “If you were to look at the city of Bemidji as far as the payroll generated out of a single business, we’re by far the largest private enterprise in Bemidji by a long ways,” he said. “And we’re proud to be here.” Overall, Johanneson’s Inc. employs more than 1,500 people in 23 stores, including 11 supermarkets and a combination of liquor stores, convenience stores, dollar stores and hardware stores across North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. With new competition emerging over the last five years, Johanneson said he has adapted to newly established grocers in the area. “I actually started in the business when I was like 10, so I’ve got 57 years in the food business,” he said. “We’ve seen a lot of things come and go in that whole period of time, but the lines of grocery stores have significantly blurred in the last five years. We’ve had to become very, very efficient at what we do. The store in Bemidji, from a technology standpoint, is the most efficient green store probably in the Midwest. Every light in there is LED, we’ve got electronic monitoring systems. Our cost of maintaining our footprint is amongst the lowest in the country, and we’re
A LANDMARK FOR 75 YEARS doing that same procedure to every store.” The company’s goal is to save more than $1 million in electric bills over five years and become more responsible as a green company, according to Johanneson. John Johanneson, who founded the company, grew up on a farm before starting work at a butcher shop. When he saved enough money, he opened his own meat market, which would become today’s 75-year enterprise. In the early 1950s, the Johanneson family sold their house to buy a small store in Fargo. They operated that store for a few years, when Supervalu put a store up for sale in Bemidji, and Johanneson’s Inc. jumped at the opportunity. “My family moved (to Bemidji) in ‘57, so we’ve been here for a long time,” Johanneson said. Five years later, John decided to take the business a step further and built a modern supermarket across from BSU, which was later named Super John’s Supermarket. “Back in the day, they called him Super John because he was a super guy, a retailer,” Johanneson said. “The college kids would come over and just write the check to Super
John.” As the company continued to expand, they wanted to avoid the need to outsource for landlords and contractors, so they created Pace Development. “It’s practical simply because we are able to build quality facilities without a lot of other general conditions and contractors overhead and costs, because we are the contractor,” Johanneson said. Johanneson, president of the business since the early 1970s, said he was born to be in the food industry. Johanneson’s headquarters in Bemidji now holds offices in accounting, trucking, distribution and real estate development branches. “It was part of the fabric of my dreams to become a grocer,” Keith said. His lifestyle didn’t give him much of a chance to do anything else, since he was in the grocery store almost all the time. “Back in the day it was pretty tough for the families to run the business, and if I wanted to see my parents, I’d go to the grocery store,” he said. “...I’d go down there and they’d put
me to work candling eggs, bagging Christmas candy or working in the produce department, so I kind of grew up in a grocery store.” It seems he chose the right profession, as he was awarded the Thomas K. Zaucha Entrepreneurial Excellence Award in 2011 and was inducted into the Scandinavian Hall of Fame in 2013 for his successful efforts as a businessman. Keith’s siblings also provided did their part in the family business. His sister, Cathy, owns Central Market in Detroit Lakes, and his brother, Rich, is still involved in the company. His older brother, Lance, retired from the business about a decade ago after a number of years in the industry.
